VISITING ROTARIANS None GUESTS Sebastian Swanson is visiting again (his 9 millionth visit and I m not exaggerating). He has applied to become a member of the Rotary Club. Sebastian recently graduated from UNLV and works at Westpac Wealth Partners. #VegasStrong # 1

2 ANNOUNCEMENTS 1. Eric Colvin announced that Debunking will be held on 6/29 (a Friday evening) at the Mob Museum. Here's an offer you can't refuse! You are invited to join the Family of the Las Vegas Rotary as we debunk The Don, or as we like to call him, The Ron, Friday, June 29th at the MOB Museum. Be sure to come in your best Mafia attire. You'll be welcomed to the speakeasy (Second Floor Courtroom) No Snitches Allowed! for cocktails and hors dourves at 6:30. At 7:30 the dinner will be served. At 9:30 leave your guns and take your cannolis as the Museum is open for your pleasure till the witching hour of midnight! (All you oldster mobsters be sure to take a nap that afternoon!) You can even meet in the MOB Museum's Speakeasy for an after dinner drink. (Everything with the exception of the Crime Lab Experience and the Use of Force Experience is open for our perusal.) So remember, a little party never killed nobody. See you there. 2. Joanne Blystone reminded everyone that guests are totally welcome. Just let Rebecca know so the caterer can plan accordingly. 3. Cliff Silverstein announced the last Greenspokes meeting of the year JUNE 28, 2018 BUCKMAN S GRILLE - 6 TO 8PM SEE BELOW. 4. Keith Thomas advised everyone that the final calendar for the Rotary year will be attached to the next newsletter and should be used for planning your next year s calendar. President-elect Karl has an exciting year planned. Keith also pointed out that he has been awarded the title of best Grandpa ever and he has the hat to prove it. RECOGNITIONS Pres.-Elect Karl was apparently feeling magnanimous inasmuch as he did not fine anyone one penny. I have a feeling he is saving up for his first meeting, which, by the way, won t be until July 9 th, inasmuch as next Monday we are dark for debunking on the 29 th, and the week following that (7/2) we will be dark for the 4 th of July. Remember, any questions, just consult the calendar. Pres.-Elect Karl pointed out that Pres. Ron was absent today and will never again lead the meeting as President, unless he gets elected again, of course, which we might do since he was such a good President. We accomplished a lot this year. Since this newsletter is likely the final newsletter of the year, here is a list of activities in which Rotary has been involved during Pres. Ron s year. 2

3 PRES. RON S ACCOMPLISHMENTS DURING THE YEAR 1. Feed the Homeless Four times we Fed the Homeless at Christ Church Episcopal Food, clothes, coats, and hygiene supplies were the order of the day. 100 to 150 homeless received a meal and clothes each time. 2. Happy Feet three times we went to different at-risk elementary schools and put new shoes and socks on kids children received new shoes and socks each time. 3. Las Vegas Rescue Mission in lieu of a gift for speakers at our weekly meeting, we make a donation to LVRM in the name of the speaker. We had approximately 36 speakers during Pres. Ron s year. 4. Vegas PBS made a donation for scholarships for homeless vets and early childhood development and participated in on-air fundraising. 5. Boys and Girls Club made a donation and participated in Boys and Girls Night Out mentoring. 6. Santa Clothes participated with other Rotary Clubs and shopped with underprivileged children to buy clothes. 7. Opportunity Village made a donation OV s Cheyenne s School Bus program which pays transportation and entry fees to the annual Magical Forest. Club members also served as volunteers. 8. Wilhelm Elementary School provided donation to purchase tablet computers and a charging station. 9. Boys and Girls Town provided funding for their Christmas clothing project called Mrs. Claus s Kitchen. One of our club members was also Mrs. Claus. 10. Andy Katz Memorial scholarship provided sponsorship and volunteers at golf tournament in honor of one of our late Rotarians. Funds raised are for UNLV scholarship. 11. Jo Mackey robotics team provided financial support for award winning middle school robotics team. 12. Las Vegas Natural History Museum provided a grant to subsidize the cost of attendance for at-risk elementary school children. 13. S.O.A.R provide funding and a volunteer on the committee for the Safety Officer Award Recognition program. This year was the 15th Annual event which recognizes Law Enforcement, Fire, Fire Rescue and the Military in Southern Nevada and which is sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Southern Nevada. 14. Three Square provide funding to Three Square - Southern Nevada s only food bank providing food assistance to the residents of Lincoln, Nye, Esmeralda and Clark Counties. Three Square combines food banking (warehousing canned and boxed goods), food rescue (obtaining surplus or unused meats, bread, dairy and produce from hospitality and grocery outlets), and ready-to-eat meals to be the most complete food solution for Southern Nevada. 15. Catholic Charities provided a grant to Catholic Charities Since 1941, the mission of Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada has been to serve those in need the most vulnerable regardless of race, religion or creed. Catholic Charities operates 18 programs providing support to more than 5,000 people daily and encompassing five core areas: Family Services, Food Services, Senior Services, Immigration and Refugee Services and Homeless and Housing Services. Catholic Charities also operates the largest Meals on Wheels program and Emergency Shelter Services in Southern Nevada. 16. Group Cultural Exchange provided funding, housing, and escort volunteers for GCE team members from India during their visit to Las Vegas. 17. UNLV scholarships each year our club awards a $10,000 scholarship (spread over 4 years). 18. Sponsored youth exchange student - 3

4 19. Puerto Vallarta water project funding and hands on participation in Mexico water filter project partnering with Puerto Vallarta Rotary Club. 20. RYLA funded and sent student to RYLA. 21. TLC funded and sent student to TLC. 22. Rotary Foundation Our club sent $12,072 to Rotary Foundation last year. 23. Polio Plus We sent $2,600 last year in response to an open request for Polio Plus donations. Wow, I m exhausted just reading the list! ROTARY REGALIA Pres.-Elect Karl is still learning the ropes as it wasn t even mentioned (but then maybe he is braiding his own rope and Rotary Regalia might not be part of our future????) JOKE OF THE DAY Scott Baranoff told a story about an elephant observation by a young man and his subsequent questioning of his mummy and daddy. Now, the way I remember the story, the young man and his mummy and daddy were blind and all touched the elephant and then described the elephant differently based on the part that they touched. Since they all touched a different part, well.you get the idea. Scott s version was somewhat different (as you might expect) and resulted in an observation by the daddy that clearly cannot be believed. GIFTS FOR THE PRESIDENT Pres.-Elect Karl has yet to announce to the club what his preferred gift is going to be for next year. DRAWING Rick Colvin was today s big winner. There are many of us living in Anthem, 7Hills, Green Valley and the surrounding areas who have been involved in Rotary or other service organizations who would like to be involved again in some capacity. Rotary members find great satisfaction in working with charitable groups, including the homeless, underprivileged children and working internationally with Rotary Clubs in other countries. June 28th will be our first get together. Please join us, renew your interest in a community service group that s connected to countries throughout the world. Check out his business card His office is in downtown Summerlin with a view of the strip and eventually a view of the new baseball stadium. He filled us in on a grant program that provides assistance for those buying homes. Qualifying for bonus money and money-saving programs is easier than you think. He has a lot of cool programs and he is ready to help you with your home financing needs. 6
