College Ave. Beautiful gardens abound in historic FP By Kathy McKimmie Taking a leisurely walk around Fletcher Place is the best way to see it and enjoy it, from the glimpse of the downtown skyline to meeting new neighbors to admiring homes and gardens. My mission on a recent walk was getting inspiration for my own tiny yard and garden. It didn t take long. My neighbors in the 700 block of Harrison Street, Dale Spegal and Mack Allison, take the prize for a meticulous yard. After removing a picket fence a couple years ago on their double corner lot, they built up a low berm, using shrubs, perennials and rocks to create some privacy and a serene space. Kudos guys. What a treat it was to discover Maryann Petrosino working in her beautiful backyard garden at 639 McCarty. When I asked if I could come in Maryann Petrosino in her garden on McCarty St. and talk to her about it she was happy to share her plan. The overall goal, she said, was getting rid of the grass--something that Join with others in enjoying a summer stroll and brief garden and landscape talks at five to six different locations in Fletcher Place on July 23, Ginger and Robb Biddinger, co-coordinators of the Fletcher Place Garden Club, part of the Social Committee, will welcome walkers and introduce Meg Purnsley, senior architectural reviewer for the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission. Meg will choose the walkaround locations and comment on historic landscaping and Victorian flowers, pavers and walks, cobblestone alleys, historic curbs, fencing and paint colors, and will respond to questions. Except for the first stop, the walk around will include only what can be seen from the sidewalks, streets and alleys. No tour of the properties is included. Walkers should just show up outside the first house, 441 S. Park, at 6:30 p.m. The walking tour will last about instantly got me nodding my head. A rain date is set for July 24, same time and place. The Garden Club s recent activities include the planting of flowers at the Fletcher Place marker at Fletcher Avenue and Pine Street on June 30. Jennifer and her husband Toby moved to the neighborhood in May They were joined shortly thereafter by their son, TJ, who was born in July Jennifer has a degree in Journalism from I.U. and was formerly a fourth grade teacher. She is now a stay-at-home mom. Jennifer is interested in learning as much as Jennifer Cole she can while serving on Fletcher Place s board. She has participated in many of the neighborhood s social committee s events. She loves the history of the neighborhood and its walkability (as does her 80-pound hound, Alex). Her favorite thing about Fletcher Place is the people. People in our neighborhood make an effort to know one another, she said. It s not like that everywhere this is a special place to live. 3 From the Editor New and old roots in Fletcher Place By Tori Calvert As I approach my 30s, my thoughts increasingly include the possibility of settling down in a home, or at least making a larger housing commitment than a one-year lease. Although my family has moved often over the years, the Fletcher Place neighborhood has been a constant in my life; so in addition to the benefits of location and culture, family tradition makes the area a natural choice for me. My grandparents, Lera and Milburn Calvert, made a white, two-story house at 739 Elm St. their home in They added my father, David, to their family in 1955, who would later meet my mother, Donna Crawford, a classmate at Wood High School who had recently moved to the neighborhood at 739 Harrison St. After marrying and starting a family, my parents chose Fletcher Place for their home. When I arrived in 1979, the first home I knew was a singlefamily house at 747 Fletcher Ave., only a few houses from my current abode. My immediate family left the neighborhood a few years later, but my grandmother has never left her home on Elm Street. The house that I remember as having white aluminum siding and a chain-link fence around the front yard is now blue-green with wood siding and no fence. Neighbors and houses have come and gone. Most recently, a large home was built at the end of Elm Street in what, for as long as I can remember, was an open field that my five siblings, four cousins and I used for tag, races, or International Tea & Coffee 630 Virginia Ave. Indianapolis, IN Finest Teas in Town Gourmet Coffee and Lunch Too! The most dramatic change to the area that my family experienced, however, occurred in the 1970s when the 800 block of Elm Street was completely demolished for construction of I-70/I-65. My grandmother was concerned that her house would be demolished too and even prepared to find a new home, but she barely avoided demolition. Hers was the last home on the block to be saved, and I-70/I-65 has been her neighbor ever since. When spending weekends at her house as a child, my sister always requested an open window, saying the sound of cars on the interstate soothed her to sleep. When my father s sister, Rebecca Besser, began her housing search in her 20s, she chose a home just over the interstate at 937 English Ave., where she still lives today. Similarly, my mother s sister, Faye Martin, and her family chose a home around the block from my maternal grandmother on Lord Street, where they lived for ten years. So I was very fortunate that visits to my grandmothers often included visits with cousins, aunts and uncles. After living out of state for many years, I have now returned to the neighborhood. Like my grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, I look forward to enjoying the culture, landscape, neighbors and businesses that have always made me feel at home in Fletcher Place. 4 Consider using historic plants in Fletcher Place We all love beauty in our gardens, but Candice Segulin, gardener on the horticulture staff at the Indianapolis Zoo, is combining beauty and history in the Heritage Garden (HG) at White River Gardens. My goal is to have it reflect a style known as Grandmother s Garden that was a more common design style in the mid- 1800s to early 1900s, she said. It has a very English cottage garden feel, with lots of different plants mixed in rather than Appraisal Services Commercial and Residential Real Estate Appraisers located in Fletcher Place at 722 Lexington Avenue Specializing in Downtown and Historic Properties larger groups of similar plants. She shared the list of plants in the Heritage Garden and made other suggestions. Bulbs In HG: daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, crocus. Additional suggestion: fritillaria. Small Trees/Shrubs In HG: bridal wreath spirea, smoke tree, rugosa roses, hydrangea paniculata grandiflora, yew, barberry. Additional suggestions: viburnum, rose of Sharon, redbud, serviceberry, summersweet, deutzia. Annuals/Bedding plants In HG: nasturtium, love in the mist, flowering tobacco. Additional suggestions: heliotrope, cosmos, gladiolas, viola, canna, zinnia, dusty miller, marigold, cockscomb, four o clocks. Perennials In HG: peonies, foxglove, daylily, garden phlox, iris, anemone, coneflower, columbine, black-eyed Susan, bluebells, blazing star, butterflyweed wine cups, balloon flower, hollyhock, delphinium, monkshood, lambs ear, candytuft, feverfew and various herbs including chives and thyme. Additional suggestions: shasta daisy, hostas, yarrow, cheddar pinks, clematis. Contact: Candice Segulin, , 1200 W. Washington St. Cultural Trail schedule moved to spring By Tori Calvert The Fletcher Place/ Fountain Square Cultural Trail Committee continues to offer ideas to the Indianapolis Cultural Trail team for the Virginia Avenue leg. Members brainstormed at the May meeting, favoring more gingko trees and fewer locust, and expressing interest in sponsoring an art installation to celebrate the opening of the trail. A permanent directory to point trail visitors to neighborhood assets such as restaurants, parking, public restrooms and big events was discussed, and there was interest in more murals in Fountain Square. The June meeting was a Walk and Talk along the future trail on Virginia from Anthem to Fountain Square, led by Gail Swanstrom from the Indianapolis Cultural Trail team. She announced that construction on the Virginia Avenue leg is expected to be moved up to late spring. The group took pictures and shared ideas before relaxing at Deano s Vino in Fountain Square it s not all work. Come to the July 8 Fletcher Place Neighborhood Association meeting to hear a special presentation by Indianapolis Cultural Trail team members on the first survey of the Virginia Avenue leg. Simultaneously I serve as a resource for the Mayor and all branches of city government and keep them informed of pressing needs and exciting developments in my area as well. The concierge side of the job is more active and time-consuming. City government is complex and cumbersome, and it is my job to help neighborhood residents understand and navigate that system for positive results. Q. What types of issues have you addressed in the Fletcher Place neighborhood? A. Fletcher Place differs slightly from the remainder of my area, and as a result the issues often vary slightly from the standard issues I deal with in my other neighborhoods (crime and code compliance). In particular, the zoning peculiarities, the presence of the only historic preservation district in my area, and the level of market-driven redevelopment have made the area a busy and atypical neighborhood for me. Since becoming the Liaison for this area last summer, I have dealt with infrastructure KATHLEEN MURPHY 1044 Virginia Ave. Booths Buying old items at 841 S. Noble issues, historic preservation concerns, zoning petitions, mass rezoning of improperly zoned residences, and a variety of property crime reports. Q. What s the most important thing Fletcher Place residents should know about the mayor s liaison role in the area? A. I would always remind people that I have a job because city government is confusing. If it were easy to get things done I d be unemployed. So if you are frustrated, let me know and while I can t always deliver everything neighbors desire, I hope that I can provide a better understanding of the issues and more times than not a positive resolution. 6 G oing Green Composting By Hannah Brown Did you know that when you throw organic matter such as vegetable peels in the trash it may take decades to decompose? I always thought, erroneously, that plant-based trash would break down in the landfill, so it wasn t a big deal to throw it away. In today s landfills, however, trash is buried away from the light and moisture needed for decomposition. So a banana peel you throw away today will probably still be some form of banana peel years from now. Rather than have organic matter, such as plant scraps from the kitchen and yard waste, take up valuable space in landfills, why not put it to use in your own yard? Finished compost makes excellent natural (and free!) fertilizer to add to your soil. So not only are you keeping waste out of landfills, you are making healthier soil at home. For everything you could possibly want to know about composting, you can visit org and gov/compost/. For those without yards, another option is creating a worm bin that can be kept in the kitchen or pantry. For more information on worm bins, see cityfarmer.org. Ryan and I will be building a simple compost bin in our backyard this summer using shipping pallets. Some of the most important things I ve learned so far in researching this project are: Compost needs plenty of light and water for decomposition to occur. It s important to bury new additions to the pile and to turn the compost. Keeping animal products such as meat and dairy out of the pile will keep pests away and maintain a healthy and functioning compost. Keeping a small bin in the kitchen to store food scraps before putting them in the compost will probably increase the amount of scraps we add to the pile. Composting can be as involved or passive as you want to make it we ll take it easy to start with and see what happens! Fletcher Place residents Hannah and Ryan Brown will be creating their own compost bin soon. If you d like to talk about composting, contact them at hannahnell@yahoo.com. FP makes news May was a banner month for Fletcher Place in the news. Did you catch these mentions? Nuvo ran a lengthy cover story on bocce ball in Lacey Park in Fletcher Place in the May 21 issue, including great pictures and quotes from Fletcher Place resident and bocce organizer Joe Giacoletti.
