1 A Newsletter for The North Cascade Region of the VCCA May 2018 This car was purchased (approximate cost $2,500) new in Benkleman, Nebraska at Robertson Chevrolet by a gentleman named Winston Hunkins on February 17, Winston drove this car in his hometown of Stratton, NE until 1968 when he purchased a new 1968 Chevy pick up. The Bel Air was stored in a shed at his home where it remained for 43 years. Winston passed away in 2011 and the car was purchased at an estate sale auction in Nebraska. Several local people were involved in getting the car to the Snohomish area and worked on getting it running prior to my taking possession of the care in February of I am the second legal registered owner of this automobile. It now has little over 47,000 original miles, is completely stock and original except for mechanical maintenance items, and a repaint. The owner s manuals were in the glove box as was the last registration dated January 19, This car is rather rare as most HARDTOPS were the Impalas. Bel Air Hardtop Coups are uncommon. This car has no rust issues beyond minute slight surface pitting on one rocker panel. What s been done? New: Gas Tank, radiator, belts, hoses, complete brakes rebuild (hoses, shoes, wheel cylinders, master cylinder), tune-up, complete muffler system, carb rebuild, fuel pump, trunk mat, tires, drive-line U joints, seat belts, shock absorbers, new pressure plate, clutch, and resurfaced flywheel. Repainted. What now? It s my intention to keep this car as close to original and correct matching numbers stock as possible. Finally decided to do a complete repaint and repair (B&H Body Repair in Snohomish), the minor fender and truck lid dents and the original dings and scratches. The seat covers were replaced with new replica color and design of the original covers. This is the story of a real survivor with the documented history. ~Jay Smith

2 North Cascade Members, Our meeting was short and sweet. We have officers that do a great job keeping the business end of our club up to snuff, and committee chairs are working hard to keep the club running smooth. Doug is on top of things as Activities Director with fun and interesting events lined up for the summer. Janet has the Scholarship Committee on track, and has everything ready for the recipient of our Scholarship at Sno-Isle Skills Center. We have two baskets coming together to contribute to the 2018 Meet, and we will have a good time at Chehalis. I am looking forward to getting my Chevys back on the road, and cruising to our events. The '55 new gauges are almost ready to install, and the '53 is still at the paint shop. I enjoy working on the Chevys. It is a challenge we all embrace, and part of owning a Classic Car. I like the simplicity of the cars : No computers, fuel injectors, oxygen sensors, catalytic converters, wheel sensors, or going through emissions. We are preserving something that will continue to bring pleasure to us, our families and others throughout time. These historic Classics will never go out of style. 3 North Cascade Region Meeting Minutes April 16, 2018 Golden Corral, Marysville, WA Meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Director Gene Rogers. Officers in Attendance: Director Gene Rogers; Asst. Director Jay Smith; Secretary Jeanne Rogers; Treasurer Helen Meadows; Membership Glenda Olson; Newsletter Claudia Rogers; Webmaster Gary Rogers March 2018 meeting minutes were accepted with no additions and/or corrections. Treasurer s report was given. Membership Glenda reported that we have 48 memberships (85 members) with 38 in attendance this evening. Activities Doug reported that anyone going to Union Gap on Saturday, April 21 and want to run with the pack to meet at King Charlie s for a 11:00 a.m. departure. Doug also reported that the May activity will be on Sunday, May 6th (note date change) and will be to Dan Jubie s. June activity will be the NW Meet. Newsletter Claudia reported that everything is going well and looking for articles on cars. Webmaster Gary reported that he has removed pictures of members cars and added new member cars NW Meet Ken Scott reported that there are now 50 registrations confirmed and that Nancy & Mike Rice are doing an excellent job at Registration. Old Business: Concerning tabled item from the March 2018 meeting, Scholarship Committee Chair Janet Wakefield reported that she has informed through letter the Teachers at Sno-Isle that Scholarship applications are to be submitted by May 1st for consideration. One (1) application has been received so far. Due to a multitude of scheduling conflicts, committee member Jeanne Rogers asked to be recused this year. Treasurer Helen will take her place for the remainder of the New Business: No New Business this evening. Motions made at this meeting. There were no motions made at this meeting Good of the Order Carol Straight mentioned that on May 12th, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Roy Robinson Chevrolet in Marysville, WA they will be holding a 100 Years of Chevy Trucks if anyone with a Chevy truck would like to drive down and show off their truck. More information available on the Roy Robinson website. Helen Meadows reported that the Hot Rod Hall of Fame will be at the Lynnwood Convention Center again this year and if anyone is interested in going the tickets are $50.00 p/person which includes dinner. Raffle this evening netted $75.00 with winners being Fran C., Gary R., Glenda O., Doug A., Greg P., Rich S., Blanch K. and Jim S. 6 A Newsletter for The North Cascade Region of the VCCA May 2018 After weeks of rain, the NCR was ready to find some sunshine. Many of us caravanned through the backroads to North Bend, to catch I-90. We took the scenic Canyon Road for part of the cruise. Everyone checked in where they were staying for the night, and we all got together for a Mexican dinner with a table for 27! We got a good rest and motored to the Central Washington Agricultural Museum. Then the dusting, shining, and buffing began. We love that their tradition is to play the National Anthem and do a flag raising ceremony. There were tram rides around the vast grounds, photos taken in front of the retro gas station, and much to take in with all the vintage agricultural machines. With a record 273 cars participating, there was much to stroll around and ohhh and ahhh over. Blanch, Robin and Claudia tackled the steep hike to the top of the hill (or mini mountain) for a bird s eye view of the show and the entire Yakima Valley. John Cantrell won a trophy for his 1955 Chev Bel Air. Jay Smith and Claudia Rogers won raffle prizes. Jay a Man Cave Clock and Claudia a sign. Once again, a huge thank you to Nick and Kathy Schultz for arranging our dinner and running the Old Steel Car Show!!! 6

A wonderful group of volunteers have put together the Hooray for Hollywood 2018 NW Meet, Most positions are filled and excitement abounds.. In cooperation with the Rotary Club we are sponsoring an auction for support of the Children s Center and Museum in Chehalis. Several items have already been donated and there is room for more. If you have an appropriate gift please call me at and I ll arrange for delivery in time for the May 11 th auction. This is to show our support of the local community.
