Hopefully March weather will improve and everyone will get busy sprucing up their Studebaker for upcoming activities. Tech Tips Submitted by Jerry Blount Reprinted with permission of Jerry Blount and Northwest Chapter SDC Among the many changes on the 1961 Lark models was an under the hood firewall mount brake master cylinder. This was a huge improvement regarding the ease of checking the brake fluid level, compared to the previous under the floorboard master cylinder. In addition to the ease of checking fluid level, when it came time to replace the master cylinder itself it was much easier to do with the access under the hood. Assuming non-power brakes - just disconnect the actuating push rod from the brake pedal arm, unplug the stop light switch wires, disconnect the hydraulic brake line, and then remove the attaching bolts - four total '61 - '62, two total '63 up. A simple job on a car that was but a few years old, but now we are working on 55 year old cars that may not have had their master cylinder replaced in 25 or 30 years. Page 2 of 12

3 Where caution is now required is in removing the bolts that attach the master cylinder to the firewall. These screw in to "Cage Nuts" - square nuts in a stamped steel housing that clip in to the brake pedal support under the dash. Sometimes, if we are trying to break loose a fastener that is resisting our efforts, we will just apply more force. Unfortunately, if the bolt is that tight, it will twist the cage nut assembly out of the brake pedal support. Then we have no choice but to grab the damaged nut with Vice-Grip pliers to unscrew it. If you feel the master cylinder bolt will not successfully unscrew from the cage nut assembly, you might try to hold the nut with Vice-Grip pliers before you damage the cage nut assembly. And we will assume that we used a penetrating oil spray to begin with. Replacement cage nuts, 1955X2, are no longer available from Studebaker parts sources, but a fully stocked Hardware Store should have them. If you have a used pedal assembly laying around, the cage nuts are easily removed and installed in your car. Or, you could just use a standard washer and nut as a replacement. I always put anti-seize on the threads when I install the master cylinder bolts. If a car has power brakes, the brake booster itself is installed through these very cage nuts, so you will not have this issue when changing the master cylinder on a power brake equipped Lark. Destination Moncopulli II submitted by Steve McNicol The May 2001 issue of Turning Wheels had an article entitled Destination Moncopulli, about a private Studebaker museum in Osorno, Chile, owned by Bernardo Eggers, called Auto Museum, Moncopulli. I remember thinking as I read the article, that it would be nice to visit the museum one day. I thought that my opportunity had come a few years later when our daughter was teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in Santiago, Chile. But before we could arrange a visit to Chile, the daughter moved to Peru and the opportunity to visit the museum seemed to vanish. Moving forward a few years, through Facebook, Bobbie connected with a woman from Chile that her family had hosted as an exchange student in high school fifty years ago. She invited us to visit her in Chile during their summer (our winter), an invitation we happily accepted. As part of our prescheduled tour, we visited the Auto Museum Moncopulli, and asked if the owner was available. The lady at the entrance contacted Bernardo, and said he would be there soon. In the meantime, we started looking at the cars. The museum consists of two buildings, with restored Studebakers in the front building, and Brand X s in the second building. Outside, under lean-to covers, are several non-restored Studebakers. All of the 75+ cars in the museum are originally from Chile, except a 1960 Hawk, and a 1963 Avanti with Oregon license plates. 4 Figure 1 Inside the museum Figure 2 Outside the museum Bernardo arrived a short time later with a big smile on his face, as not many Studebaker people visit the museum. After introductions, Bernardo signed my May 2001 copy of Turning Wheels and started telling us the museum history as he guided us around. His affiliation with Studebakers started with a Studebaker pickup his father used on the family s dairy farm. As with any collection, one Studebaker led to another, and then on to other brands. After the tour, a side door to the museum was opened and Bernardo backed the Avanti out and told me to get in on the passenger side. Off we went, out the gate, and down the road for a mile and then back to the museum. As we returned, Bernardo stated that that was his first Studebaker tour of I smiled and told him that it was my first tour, also. Figure 3 Bernardo Eggers chats with Steve Bernardo has had some recent health issues and does not want to restore or add more cars to the museum, although his wife recently told him of another car she believes would look nice in the museum, and one daughter made him promise that none of the cars in the collection are for sale. Ironically, the first collector car in the museum is a 1955 Buick Century. After a few hours, we said our goodbyes and left a still smiling Bernardo at the museum. Page 4 of 12

On one of the shows, it showed an invention, a urine activated battery. For the most of us, never in our wildest dreams would we conceive such an idea, but someone has... Picture this, now --- A beer guzzler would have an ample of the necessary commodity to activate such a battery. Taking this one step further down the road, the police would pull the car over to the curb after the driver had a few beers too many. The driver, though somewhat unsteady, will try to convince the officer that he really needed the beer in case the battery went dead. Recycling beer --- such an novel idea to utilize it. ************ It s A Dog s Life In Calgary, Alberta, there once was a dog named Nugget. This dog had a Habit and a heart. The habit that he had was drug abuse and drinking beer with his owner, Deborah. Both were attending the AA Meetings. At times, Nugget would attend by himself. When doing so, he would kneel on the floor during the sobriety prayers. Many a night, the dog would stay with the addicts through their difficult times. One alcoholic said that when he was feeling really tough, Nuggets would scratch on his door to be let in to keep him company and when he was sick, the dog would be there too. The dog s affection was not only for a chosen few, but had a love for everybody and had a sixth sense for everyone in need. He would spend the night sleeping in a room with someone with bad withdrawals. Within a year, the dog and his owner had overcome the problem of alcohol and drug abuse. Unfortunately though, the dog was struck and killed by a car just shortly after he had managed to kick his habit. Nuggets is sadly missed by those whose lives he had touched. ************ * Happiness is being with those who care. Page 5 of 12

6 Warbirds over the West Details submitted by Ed Conn The B-17 Alliance is having a fly-in and car show on June 9th and 10th, Warbirds Over the West. It's a fundraiser to help restore the "Lacey Lady" B-17 back to flying condition. There is a Studebaker connection, since it still has the original four Wright 1820 Studebaker built motors. We had a few Studebakers last year, mine and Tom Morris s. It would be great to see more Studes there this year.
