IN THE SHADOWS OF EVEREST She also wrote No Summit Out of Sight; The True Story of the Youngest to Climb the Seven Summits. Jordan Romero climbed Everest at 13 and the highest point on each continent by 15. Wearing a traditional Sherpa dress, she will present a slide show about Sherpas, Everest, and Jordan s world records, in an anecdotal manner, giving the audience humorous insights. 2 FROM YOUR PRESIDENT Getting IN-volved... Our travel plans take us many places. My friend, Anonymous, has written about the places he has been IN. I m sure you have found yourself in many of these: I have been in many places, but I've never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone. I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there. I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my children, friends, family and work. I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore. I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often. I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm. Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older. One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenaline flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get! John Giles Friendship Force allows us to be IN many places, perhaps the most important is to be IN-volved. Our club needs your help and expertise to introduce Friendship Force to new members and to grow our organization. A good introduction to our club for potential new members is in a book by Rick Steves, a well-known American travel author and expert, who has included Friendship Force International in the third edition of his book Travel as a Political Act. Rick writes, I ve taken several wonderful trips with organizations that offer educational or reality tours It s clear to me that if you want to get the most out of visiting a complicated corner of our world, your best bet is to go with an organization that has a network of people on the ground who can provide an insider s understanding.. Do you need Friendship Force marketing information? We have lots of handouts, written articles, or you can view the FFI web page below: Page-Flyer-2017.compressed-1.pdf Contact any board member on the newsletter and we will get you the needed material. Thanks for being INVOLVED! May 2018 page 2
At our April meeting, Pat LaMoe won a sweet something for answering the membership question in our last newsletter. Cindy Tanner won the drawing for submitting names for coffee attendees, and received a Cold Stone gift card. Jane Watson won a gift card for submitting the most names to invite for upcoming informational coffees in May. We have an orientation coffee scheduled at Windsor Gardens on Wed., June 27 at 10 am. We will be needing volunteers for this event so put it on your calendar. Last meeting, we had Board members conduct discussions about ways to market our club. We are happy that we got several volunteers to give out brochures, submit articles for our local newspapers and the Next Door website. Our three Denver area orientation coffee hosts have sent out invitations for their coffees in May. We are looking forward to our members sharing their experiences with attendees. Thank you, volunteers for helping us grow our membership! And keep reading our Membership News. Linda Lustig Experience Different Views. Discover Common Ground. May 2018 page 3

INTERNATIONAL OUTBOUND JOURNEY June 13 27, 2018 Lϋbeck, Germany and Limburg, Belgium Lϋbeck, Germany Lübeck, here we come on June 13 th! Lübeck is the largest Baltic harbor of Germany, and the port is a major employer in the city. Paper and wood products, fruit, grain, automobiles, salt, and fertilizer are among the cargoes handled, and there is a significant amount of ferry traffic. Other industries include shipbuilding, metalworking, and food processing; services related to finance, communications, and the tourist trades have become increasingly important. The city is also renowned for its confectionery delights. Can t wait! The inner city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in What does that mean? A World Heritage site is inscribed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural World Heritage List. The site is designated as having outstanding universal value under the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. It provides a framework for international cooperation in preserving and protecting cultural treasures and natural areas throughout the world. Lübeck retains a distinctive medieval character in its narrow cobblestone streets and its faithfully restored houses and shops, along with its ecclesiastical and municipal structures. Among Lübeck s outstanding monuments are the St. Mary s Church, a 13th 14th-century brick structure in the Gothic style, the Romanesque cathedral (begun in 1173 under Henry III), and the magnificent Rathaus (city hall), built in a combination of Gothic and Renaissance styles. 6 INTERNATIONAL INBOUND JOURNEY September 13-20, 2018 Vancouver, B.C., Canada We Celebrate Canadians with Kazoos, Cowbells and Vanna White You had to see it to believe it! Yes, it s no secret that our Denver club is eagerly awaiting the arrival of our Vancouver friends. In fact, so eagerly that at our April meeting, our own Vanna White, also known as longtime member Pat LaMoe, awarded Canadian product prizes to 5 lucky winners while our entire club orchestra provided the musical accompaniment with kazoos and cowbells! Legendary coffee from Tim Hortons Humor book by a Canadian So You Want to be Canadian To help with your calendar planning, all are welcome at our all-club event dates: Friday, Sept. 14 Vancouver Welcome Dinner Wednesday, Sept 19 Vancouver Farewell Dinner Day activities during the week will explore not only the vibrancy of The New West and the rapid change that surrounds us all in Denver but also the foundation of our Old West Colorado history. Space for day activities is limited. Priority will be given to Home Hosts, Day Hosts, and Small Group Dinner Hosts. Be sure to sign up at the next meeting or contact Melody Henson, melodyhenson@comcast.net. May 2018 page 6
SOCIAL COMMITTEE BULLETIN Check this site in each month s newsletter for current planned activities that all members are welcome to participate in as long as space is available and you have RSVP d. Here are the current happenings: MUNCH LUNCH BUNCH Due to unavoidable scheduling conflicts, there will be no Munch Lunch Bunch outings in May or June. We apologize for this, but have plans to be back in July with other lunch opportunities. In the meantime, if you know of unique ethnic lunch spots in your neighborhood, please let a member of the Social Committee know! We need your ideas!!! MAY 30 th at 10 A.M. We are scheduled to tour the National Science Foundation Ice Core Facility (formerly the National Ice Core Laboratory) at the Federal Center. Sign-ups are almost full now, so do not miss out on this unique and perhaps once-in-a-lifetime opportunity tour (since the lab is no longer scheduling public tours, but ours was already scheduled!!). Remember that this will be a VERY chilly outing, so come prepared with parkas, wool hats, and gloves! If you want an early peak at what we will see, go to ANNUAL SUMMER PICNIC JULY 21 ST at 1:30 P.M. Join us for our traditional summer outing a picnic! Details on following page. ON SATURDAY, APRIL 21 ST, Stoney Brook Clubhouse shift-changed into Friendship Force Denver s version of a Thai restaurant where 26 patrons dined on delectables like celery salad with peanuts, chicken Larb, Thai beef salad, Pad Thai noodles with chicken and tofu, Phat Pak Ruam (mixed vegetables), Northern-style pork curry, bananas in coconut cream, and mocchi. Oh yes, and birthday cake to honor Laurie Seymour s birthday (you ll have to ask her which one.) Judging by the laughter, numerous conversations, and amount of food consumed, it was a truly successful event. Scott and Luree Miller s niece from the UK was even there to join in the evening s festive fun. Special honors go to the cooks who chopped, minced, slivered, broiled, baked, and steamed their way through recipes that many had never seen or heard of before Ilene Americus, Tuti Tierney, Carol Rush, Nancy Crocker, Karen Gulley, Pat Kaplan, Luree Miller, and Kim Sheremeta. The unanimous vote among all the diners was: let s do this again! May 2018 page 7

A VISITOR FROM KAMPALA, UGANDA by Ilene Americus Friendship Force Denver had a visitor from Kampala, Uganda during March and April. Doreen Namayanja, a 33-year-old member of the Kampala Friendship Force Club came to visit. So, many of the Ambassadors from our recent African Journey stepped up to show Doreen an amazing and action-packed stay. She was hosted first by Mike and Cindy Tanner where she experienced a Nuggets game, a St. Patrick s Day parade, fed the homeless and so much more. Pam Comello took her to explore downtown Denver. LaDonna Palm from the Northern CO club hosted her in Loveland and she was able to visit Rocky Mountain National Park, a school, and help LaDonna with her volunteer activities. Pat Welch and LaDonna took her to Chewey s, an iconic Mexican Restaurant, and explored Boulder. With Ilene Americus, she visited the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and was able to view the Dead Sea Scroll exhibit. She helped FF Denver pack medical supplies at Project C.U.R.E. and was able to see where the kits we carried to Uganda came from. Ken Sweet took Doreen on another excursion over Loveland Pass where she experienced sledding! Gerry Forney and Irene Ludwig hosted Doreen at a dinner at their home where she also met Dave Bentzin. Melody Henson and Ilene took her to the Indian Powwow where she learned about native cultures and dancing. Carol Mark danced her feet off! She introduced her to country western dancing, Zumba, the Mint, Home Depot and Costco. Doreen was amazed that you could buy everything you need to build a house in one place. Laurie Seymour and Roy Cohen then hosted Doreen and explored the murals in RiNo, ice cream from the Central Market and her first taste of Italian food. She also experienced an Easter Egg Hunt and Easter brunch with Laurie s in-laws and grandsons. All in all, she had a busy visit and saw so much of Colorado thanks to the generous hospitality of Friendship Force. May 2018 page 9
APRIL PROGRAM RECAP A PERSONAL TOUR OF EUROPEAN ART by Roy Cohen We were entranced and enriched by Frances Charteris presentation of Belgian and German painters (in honor of our upcoming Journey). Frances is the owner of Charteris Art Tours and has helped hundreds of people navigate the art culture of Europe. The presentation highlighted some of her favorite artists over the last several hundred years. Some I knew and many were new to me. I was personally moved by the works and words of the artists. Many in the audience were equally moved. The intention of the presentation was to give a sense of Northern Europe's extraordinary art that lives and breathes meaning today. Frances began with early paintings and drawings and moved forward to photography, film, print making (Durer, Heironymous Bosch and Kathe Kollwitz), and then to photography, video and installation art with its range of surprising materials. Amid many themes, one of love wove itself through the works. For example, there is Mary swooning in love and sorrow for her dead son Jesus as he was taken down from cross in "The Deposition," by Rogier van der Weyden. Later Frances shared a rendering by Kathe Kollwitz "Mother Holding Her Dead Child". She noted Paula Modersohn-Becker's portrait of her closest friend, Clara Westhoff that was intentionally posted in the same frame as her portrait of poet Rainer Maria Rilke their union was an uneasy one. Frances then presented an Arnolfini portrait by Jan Van Eyck in which we saw the gentle young woman's open palm gently resting in his left hand. There was also a portrait of The Money Changer and his Wife by Quentin Matsys. He is absorbed in counting, standing with his wife to his left, with a distant gaze to the viewer's left, her hand resting on a page in a book representing the Virgin Mary and child. Frances ended the presentation with a portrait of Barack Obama by Kehinde Wiley, and Michelle Obama by Amy Sherald a loving couple, and an inspiring example to the world of a successful union based on mutual love, respect and honor. The portraits are artworks of highest order, commensurate with the subjects. Wouldn t it be great to invite some of our visitors to one of Frances local art tours? May 2018 page 10
