1 August 2017 Editor: Barry Brown THE BIG SIR COLUMN Since we passed the midway six-month mark for this year, I would like to briefly review our progress for new first time guests and additional new members for Branch 8. Keep in mind that the total SIR organization has lost membership over the last ten years. That trend is changing. This has much to do with our statewide emphasis on RAMP (Recruitment, Activities, Member Relations, and Publicity). These four Branch 8 committees are the backbone of our group and producing positive growth. It starts with bringing in first time guests. Our 2017 goal for this is 77 and we are 51% of goal with 39 guests for six months. New members installed now stands at 349 and our goal for the year is 353, very achievable. Our thanks to the RAMP committee members and YOU for bringing in new guests and members. Also, the number of available activities continue to grow. This year we have 52 activities. Thirty-five (35) of our activities are open to couples. REMINDER: Last year we made a special request to bring a check made our to SIR Br. 8 for the lunch and not pay cash. Please continue this process since checks are more manageable and preferable. Thanks! Mike Long, BIG SIR LITTLE SIR SEZ Our July lunch speaker did a great job! Mark Sherry, Staff Specialist at the SFO Air Traffic Control Tower, gave excellent insights to the challenges of SFO Air Traffic Control. He was able to clearly explain the complexities in plain English, with a humorous speaking style. His Q&A session was handled adroitly. Hats off to Ron Brown for bringing him to Branch 8. We have two top-notch speakers coming up in August and September: Dan Ashley, ABC 7 News Anchor is our August speaker. His topic is Ratings and Responsibility: The Challenges of Television News. He is a highly sought-after speaker and is addressing one of today s critical issues. Dan got rave reviews two years ago when he spoke at a Branch 8 lunch. Lawren Hicks, MD, Medical Director, John Muir Senior Services is our September speaker. His subject is De-Mystifying Dementia. Dr. Hicks has presented to other SIR branches, with this highly rated review from one of them: Dr. Hicks handled a sensitive subject in a comfortable, demystifying manner that put the audience at ease. He cleared up any misconceptions that may have existed about dementia, and provided useful information on lifestyle changes that may delay the onset of the disease. Excellent speakers like these two are a compelling assist for recruiting lunch guests. These two should make it easier to invite people on your invitation list. Phil Trapp, Little Sir Absences & Bringing Guests If you are going to be absent or bringing a guest, please or call by noon Wednesday before the meeting. sirbr8attendance@outlook.com (a confirmation will be sent to you) Phone: (calls are not automatically returned) HOTLINE Index = Spouses/Friends Activity welcome Page # General Branch Business 1-4 Biographies 13 Branch Positions Activity Report 2 BBQ N.A. 2 . Next SIR Luncheon: August 14th Recruitment, Activities, Member relations, Publicity. RAMP is a collection of programs and services that together support the building of a successful branch. RECRUITING RECRUITMENT It Worked Again! Our Bring a Guest, Get a bottle promotion worked once more. You guys brought seven guests to the July luncheon. That's great. Sir Chris Tang ended up with three bottles of wine. One for bringing a guest and two for the I've Done My Part promotion. His first-time guest became a member on the same day. Way to go, Chris! Our Little Sir, Phil Trapp, also joined the club. With three new members in 2017, Chris is now in the lead for the annual sweepstakes prize of a $75 restaurant gift card. He's followed closely by Tony de Losada and Alan Curtis with two each. Nineteen Sirs have one each. Can anyone catch Chris? Come on guys, give it a try. Ed Benson, Recruiting Chairman ACTIVITY REPORT Concord Hilton 1970 Diamond Blvd., Concord Greeters: Tom Anders & Bill Babbel Executive meeting: 9:00am Social Hour begins: 10:15 am Luncheon starts 11:30 AM In my short time as Activity Coordinator for our branch, I have learned that our activities are a dynamic business. With 50 activities and 3 events, there is constant change and evolution. Fortunately, we are introducing new activities with some frequency. However, we are also dropping activities as members lose interest or an idea that was once popular loses steam. That is the nature of our branch activities. As you may understand, there is a lot of work required to keep our activities alive and well. Healthy activities do not happen by accident. Most of the credit goes to our Activity Chairmen. Their passion, hard work, and commitment are extremely important. They may also have good Assistant Activity Chairmen to help share the load. May I suggest that you also have a vested interest. By now, you have selected and actively participate in a few activities that meet your needs and interests. Please offer your contribution to keep those activities moving forward. That contribution can range from feedback to the Activity Chairman, new ideas for upcoming activity dates, and actual assistance with the planning and implementation of a particular event. Just do it! I'm sure that your active involvement will be much appreciated. So, make sure that your favorite activities remain in good health. Contribute where you can and recruit other members to join you in the fun. Remember that many of our activities are co-ed and offer great opportunities for family and friends. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming activities, and thank you in advance for your contribution to their success. Activity Coordinator Committee Chair: Steve Schramm MEMBER RELATIONS COMMITTEE Good news for all you Branch 8 Clothes Horses out there! Your Member Relations Committee is happy to report that through the good offices of our Branch Executive Committee, MRC has been approved by the BEC to spend $500 solely to allow a restocking of those fabulous duds you all have been pining and whining for: New SIR logoed, hats, Shirts, Stickers,. We are going to look at pens also. So soon you can gather up at store keeper Ron Maciak s and shop to your hearts content. When the inventory comes in, step it up and show those gals out there we can spend money on clothes better than they can! You will be informed as we progress. The MRC has also reported to the Branch Executive Committee that it will submit the findings of a recent, July, poll taken by a MRC sub- committee formed to ascertain the value of the Hotline to members who elect to have the Hotline printed, and delivered to their homes.there are 33 members who do so, less than 9%. Our June 12 membership report noted, we have 349 Active 22 Inactive and 3 Applicants who, I believe, were July s meeting. This equals 374 members in all. Its good to bear in mind that whatever the recommendation; is a BEC decision. The Sub -Committee meeting is scheduled for the 21st of July. Tony de Losada MRC Chairman PUBLICITY & IMAGE Oh what a great time we had at the City of Concord 4th of July parade! Behind the ever popular Espresso colored, Fiat 500C owned by myself, were Ed and Donna Benson he with a gorgeous Gun Mental Gray Thunderbird, she with a red hot, Red Ford Mustang both were convertibles. Then there was a bright yellow, highly shined and detailed Pontiac driven by Tom Hodgson, accompanied by wife Connie, last but watch out, certainly not the least was the beautiful Black Chevy Camaro driven by the ever competitive driver Jack Sagen! Then came the heartbeat of the SIR Branch 8, entries : Ed and Vickie Kirchner and Chris and Vilma Tang. At the end of the day we all retired to Casa Benson for delicious Hamburgers, Chips and wonderful potato salad! I believe there was a few beers and several gallons of wine around somewhere. It s amazing, how Miss Donna manages to get so much work out of Ed! All this on a beautiful 4th of July day and before the heat wave hit! Branch 8 Volunteerism can be a lot of fun if you haven't tried it yet... you really should! Tony de Losada P & I Chairman COMMENT CARD CORNER Analysis of Comment Cards from July 10; 2017 SIR Branch 8 Lunch Meeting. There were 13 cards turned in by one guest, two unaffiliated attendees and 10 members. Two members were Impressed, the guest and one member were Pleasantly Surprised, three members were A bit annoyed, and the two unaffiliated attendees and four members gave no attitudes. Page 2 INDEX

3 Food got seven comments: The guest thought the chicken entree was better than usual. Chicken again, so stop already, but it was great moist and tender with a good salsa, veggies and polenta. Great cake.. One thought the invocation was too long; another thought the slide show should be stopped during the invocation and the pledge of allegiance. One thought a picture of the deceased should be projected during the moment of silence.. Three felt the speaker was great to excellent, and timely. Attention was focused on the announcements, with one finding them, and especially the birthdays, anniversaries, and the business card drawing too long and disorganized. An unaffiliated attendee demanded to cancel the card program. A member felt this meeting had better control of the announcements compared to the May program which spent too much time congratulating ourselves, embarrassingly causing the speaker to get the bum's rush. What happened to the jokes. The most interesting topic is a restatement of May's comment that long time members need to do more to allow newer members to feel welcome. He recommended opening Dine-In groups to new members, and addressing cliques, particularly among BEC members by having board members sit among the regular members at lunch. Our last night we played the 2nd place team and won 1 and lost 2. Games 1 (lost) and 2 (won) were very close but game three (loss) was average. The team enjoys the weekly games. The 2016 Concord Bocce Ball Federation (CBF) League season began on May 2, 2017 at Newhall Park and Baldwin Park courts in Concord. We (SIR Bocce team name) play Tuesday nights on the Baldwin Park courts which are located off Beach St. (near Port Chicago Highway and Bonifacio St.) Play is limited to 10 SIR members and/or partners and we have the requisite number. Again this year, the event is weekly at 9:30 AM at Baldwin Park (Concord) and will run through mid-october. Please join members of the Pleasant Hill and Concord Senior Centers for a morning of Bocce! We play pickup Bocce games every Thursday morning at 9:30 at Baldwin Park in Concord. (Rain cancels). The courts are located across the street from the Concord Senior Center. It s a FUN group!! Bocce Open Play 2 participants enjoy an exciting morning of good conversation and social interaction coupled with a chance to display their Bocce skills. At the end of the day, we don t care about who wins or loses, but look back at having had a good time! Meet new friends!! We welcome all SIR member players (and spouses/partners); prior Bocce experience is not required. If anyone is interested (or for more information), please contact the Activity Chair: VACANT BOOK EXCHANGE you read it and liked it, bring it! IF YOU READ A BOOK THAT YOU REALLY LIKED AND WANT TO SHARE IT, BRING IT TO THE NEXT SIR LUNCHEON AND DONATE TO OUR COLLECTION. However, we have recently been inundated with books. Some generous members are bringing boxes of books to donate...not individual books. The net result is that instead of the collection growing at a box or two of books per meeting, we are growing at 4-6 boxes. This is creating a storage issue for us so we are spending a large amount of time to weed through our collection to reduce down the number of boxes. In the future, if any member has a large number of books to donate, it would help us if they brought only a dozen or so per meeting, so that we can assimilate them more easily. As always, if you have any questions or suggestions contact any member of the book exchange team: Chairman: Tom Kerns, jtomk01@aol.com ( ). 6 BOOK GROUP The SIR Book Group read Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance in July. It is a critically acclaimed memoir of Vance's youth in Appalachia. He writes about his dysfunctional family, and his growth from that tough environment to service in the Marines, Yale Law School, and eventually the business world. His observations of the Kentucky/Ohio border region became well known as people tried to understand why these people supported Trump in the last presidential election. Our group had a lively and interesting discussion of Vance's early life and his first book. Next, we return to the world of fiction with Gray Mountain by John Grisham. This book is set in coal country, and Grisham is always an entertaining read with surprises along the way. We will meet at the Roundtable Pizza on Oak Park Blvd. in Pleasant Hill on Tuesday, August 1, at 10:30 am for a discussion of the Grisham book. Our brief meeting will be followed by lunch as a group. Please contact Nick Maufe if you are interested in more information about the Book Group. Chairman: Nick Maufe BOWLING nickmaufe@gmail.com Bowling Report for August 2017 Winter Leagues Branch 19 SIR League - Branch 19 (Concord) sponsors a SIR league at Clayton Valley Bowl. The league starts on September 6th. The league consists of ten four-person teams. Spouses and guests are welcome. We bowl starting at 10 AM every Wednesday at Clayton Valley Bowl. This is a good time to get back into bowling if you have been too busy while you were working full time. We have averages from 120 to 220, so everyone is welcome. If you are not able to commit to a thirty-week season, you might want to sign up as a substitute where you can normally bowl on the weeks that you choose if there are any absences on your week. Many of the bowlers participate in some of the twenty SIR bowling tournaments that are held each year. These are a great way to meet SIRs from across SIRdom. Contact Dan Weller if you are interested. Arrive early for lunch because that is our payment for the use of the room. Rod Spicer, Chairman, , marod61@att.net BRIDGE RUBBER This month a rogue poker player gave us plenty to talk about. Jerry Milano opened with 6 diamonds while missing one ace and two kings. A very helpful, supporting partner raised the bid to 7 diamonds because he had 2 of the missing high cards. The opening lead exposed the last missing king and the seven diamond bid was made. So a Grand slam was bid and made. This of course helped make Jerry Milano come out as the top player with a total of His partner, Dan Smith, finished 2nd with Third place went to Stewart Patrick with The scores ran from 1390 to 5960 with the median score being about All members are invited to our game which is played at Round Table Pizza, 1938 Oak Park Blvd. in Pleasant Hill. The game starts at 9:00AM and we now have to take a break at the midsession to do a tire check and possibly move your car to avoid a parking ticket. Bring your own thermos of coffee. Bob McCain drove his 1962 Studebaker hawk along with additional members of his Studebaker club as dozens of Car Enthusiast members and wives cheered him as they passed. We had breakfast at Jacks prior to lining up lawn chairs at the curb to view the parade. ED Benson, Tom Hodgson, Jack Sagan and several others drove their cars in the Concord parade to promote Sir s Branch 8 membership. I believe some drove/road or walked the route handing out as many as 150 CD s of our branch success story to entice new members to join. This activity was executed by our Community Services Group and some car Enthusiasts helped out with the delivery. A big thanks to all our members who supported these two events. The next Car Enthusiasts meeting is Tuesday, August 1 st at the Round table Pizza, Oak Park Blvd., Pleasant Hill at 1 pm. We will be discussing the potential activity events for the next few months. He covered many of the available travel technologies and applications that make travel planning and carrying out a breeze today. No more bulky travel books to lug around, your phone and tablet can handle it all. Neil showed us his favorite traveling apps and techniques and several in attendance contributed their own traveling tips and tricks. Neil s presentation notes are available on the CAT Web page: a2cat.sirinc2.org Coming up in August, Phil Goff is going to focus on "getting organized" and show us some of the basic functionality of Photo Shop Elements. People often ask how to get photos off their smart phones, or how can they find photos that are currently on their computer. Well, Phil is going to help with that and more at out August 17 meeting. His presentation notes should be available on the CAT Web page (a2cat.sirinc2.org) several days prior to the meeting. We look forward to seeing you 9:15 AM, Thursday July 20, at the Walnut Creek Elks Lodge, 1475 Creekside Drive. We ask for a donation of $5 to cover the cost of the hall rental, coffee and cookies -- but some months are free, so come and see if our July meeting is another one of those! All SIR members and their guests (spouses included!) are welcome to attend. See you there. Taking photos in the dark is a real challenge, but there are camera settings that make it possible with very good results. Some of us, however, take much better night photos than others take. Be that as it may, nearly all of the photos our members presented at the July meeting were good examples of night photography. Our August assignment is HDR (High Dynamic Range) Photography. Dave Davis will be providing links to resources explaining what that s all about. Should be another challenging task. Everyone is encouraged to bring up to 12 jpg photos to share on a clean flash drive. Please be prepared to discuss how you created your photos, including meta data info. If you want a specific order of presentation, renaming your photos 01, 02, 03, etc., should do the trick. Be sure to use only the numbers, and nothing else, in the file name. Our host for the August 18 meeting, Hans Pable, will be sending out reminders & directions and looking for attendance confirmations a week or so before the gathering. The Digital Photography Group meetings begin at 10:00 AM on the third

There seems to be a common theme running through all our dinners. Bill and Margaret told us of their trip through the Baltic countries. The Tangs gave us a preview of their upcoming trip to Europe and separately to Antarctica. We re all waiting for the pictures. We welcomed a new couple to our dining group: Richard and Valerie Jo Remley. Their addition works well for the group since the Tangs will be traveling during our next two dinners. Our conversations linger long into the night, which is good and bad. It s good that we all enjoy each other s company, bad from the sense we keep the hosts up past their bed time (sorry Tony and Peggy)! We have two remaining events in 2017: September and November. The local salmon fishing has been the best in years. Bob Stein and Carl Moyer scored on boats out the gate, and from Half Moon Bay. Karl Droese, Richard Bal, Ed Dijkman, Paul Dubow, and Rick Fend travelled to Alaska for their salmon, and halibut. They released several halibut over 200 lbs on a fantastic trip. Pedro Contreras and Steve Paulick went south on a long range boat for yellow tail, dorado, and grouper, filling their freezers to capacity. Closer to home, Carl Moyer caught halibut in the bay, rock fish in the ocean, and blue gill and crappie in the delta. Ernie Wong ended a solid season for shad with his fly rod with 20 more. Tom Kostik and Mike Corker worked the delta for many black bass. Dick Thomson and Karl Droese went up to Oregon for sturgeon catching many. Unfortunately, the travelling 9 group has disbanded but we are considering having occasional outings of our members to other golf courses. It proved to be difficult organizing and booking several tee times for the travelers so I am proposing we have the occasional foursome take off on a week day and play away from home. As a start I was thinking of getting a foursome together to play Buchanan Fields course in Concord on Thursday, August 15th with a midmorning tee time. If anyone is interested please contact Barry Brown and let s see if there is enough interest. Page 9 INDEX

Chair: Dan Franklin Asst: Ekk Keller Ass t: Ron Draper SIRS AT THE GAMES montgall26@gmail.com ekkeller@astound.net r-draper@pacbel.net KICKOFF THE FOOTBALL SEASON WITH SIRS! We are pleased to announce that we will have a SIR group (including family and friends) at a California Golden Bears football game this fall. We have secured 20 tickets to the Cal vs. Arizona Wildcats game on Saturday, October 21. This game has been announced as an afternoon game. A noon or 1:00 pm start time is likely TBD. Our seats are in Section C, Rows 49 & 50., and should be in the shade for this game. The group ticket price is only $40 per ticket for what should be a great afternoon of college football at Cal s Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. Please contact Steve for ticket availability and information. sschramm01@gmail.com or by phone SIRS AT THE OPERA The Met is re-transmitting 2 great operas this summer, HD video recordings of audience favorites from previous years. They are: Nabucco, by Giuseppe Verde, on July 12. This opera is based on biblical accounts of Nebuchadnezzar in the books of Jeremiah and Daniel. Despite being the opera that cemented Verdi's reputation as a composer, a competing Prussian composer wrote this of the opera: "Verdi's operas are really horrible,... he scores like a fool technically he is not even professional and he must have the heart of a donkey and in my view he is a pitiful, despicable composer... Nabucco is nothing but 'rage, invective, bloodshed and murder.' " Nevertheless, it remains after a century and a half one of Verdi's most enduring operas. Nabucco contains the haunting Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, probably the most famous of all opera choruses. Carmen, by Georges Bizet, on July 19. Carmen, in our opinion, is a wonderful opera, and the tunes will stay with you for the rest of the week. According to the Met website, they will all start at 7:00pm local time, but it would be wise to check the newspaper that morning for times and theaters. I am relatively confident that the Pleasant Hill cinema is carrying them, as I saw an on-screen announcement there. With a little digging in the metopera.org website you can find short preview films. Wikipedia provides histories and synopses of all the operas. Enjoy. See you all at Norma on October 7. 13 ACTIVITY CHAIRMEN & BRANCH 8 LEADERS BIOGRAPHIES RON DRAPER Cribbage Chairman Poker Co-Chairman I m a Bay Area native. I was born, raised, and married In San Francisco. I graduated from Balboa High in 1956 and went to work for Pacific Bell Co. In 1958 I enlisted into U.S Army six year active duty reserve program. The program included six months of active duty and 5-1/2 years of active reserve. In 1961 the Berlin Crisis came about and the Government activated many reservists to active duty. Our nine man squad was included. We were sent to the US Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal School in Indian Head, Maryland to be trained on Ground and Nuclear Weapons after receiving a Top Secret Clearance. Upon completion of the training our squad destination was Germany but the crisis subsided and we were eventually discharged back to the Presidio in San Francisco. For the third time I went back to Pacific Bell in various management positions in San Francisco and Walnut Creek and retired in 1991 after 31 years of service. Then I decided to work as Project Engineer Contractor for nine years, officially retiring in I moved my young family to Walnut Creek in 1965 and commuted to San Francisco via the Greyhound bus service before BART.
