5 Bristol Valley Theater 2017 Season to celebrate women s voices Bristol Valley Theater, the Finger Lakes award-winning live, professional theater announces the line-up for their 2017 Summer Season along with an exciting initiative to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Women s Suffrage Movement in New York State. BVT, once again rated one of the top 25 Cultural Attractions by the Rochester Business Journal, will present six plays and musicals beginning in June. This summer, in commemoration and celebration of this momentous anniversary of women s rights in our state, each of our six productions was written by a female playwright, says Bristol Valley Executive Artistic Director, Karin Bowersock, In an exciting summer long initiative, Hear Me Roar: Women s Voices from Suffragist to Dramatist, we ll also be partnering with the National Susan B. Anthony Museum and House and the National Women s Historical Park on special performances and events at all three partner sites. The season, which will run from June 15 to September, kicks off with Murder Ballad, with book and lyrics by Julia Jordan, music and lyrics by Juliana Nash. BVT brings this steamy, sexy, new rock musical of a love triangle gone wrong to Naples, on the heels of its sold out run in London. Sara is torn between a marriage that has lost its spark and the old flame she can t get out of her mind. When smoldering temptation ignites, someone s gonna die. It will run from June 15 to 25. Next up is Art by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton, a Tony award winner for best play. Serge has just spent a small fortune on a painting, but when he shares it with his friends, they can t understand its appeal. What begins as an amiable discussion of personal taste rapidly devolves into a scathingly funny all-out war. This look at how we choose our art and our friends will run June 29 to July 9. Following Art is Beth Henley s Pulitzer-prize winner, Crimes of the Heart. In this zany, warm-hearted comedy, three southern sisters reunite to support the youngest, who has just shot her no-good politico husband. The sisters navigate their very different personalities, family secrets, and their current troubles which are grave and yet somehow hilarious. It runs from July 1 to 2. The season continues with an uproarious musical murder mystery, Lucky Stiff, with book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. Hapless Harry stands to inherit millions from a long lost uncle, but only if he succeeds in taking dearly departed Uncle Tony s body on a final vacation in Monte Carlo, outrunning the murderers who are also gunning for Tony s fortune. This light-hearted romp, from the authors of Once on this Island, Ragtime, and Seussical, runs from July 27 to August 6. The World Premiere production of Elijah is next in Bristol Valley s lineup. Penned by Judith Leora, whose play The Cookie Fight, premiere in BVT s 2016 season, Elijah finds a handful of strangers holed up in a Texas TGI Fridays to wait out Hurricane Elijah. As the storm rages outside, the mismatched stranded travelers discover that a different kind of atmospheric disturbance ties them all together. Part of BVT s New Works Initiative, Elijah will run from August 10 to 21. Rounding out the season is Silent Sky, by Lauren Gunderson, the heartfelt and inspiring true story of Henrietta Leavitt, one of a team of women computers hired at the beginning of the 20th Century to map the solar system. Undaunted by disability and personal tragedy, and fueled by curiosity and wonder, Henrietta is driven to ground-breaking discoveries. It s a moving and uplifting story for what we can achieve when we reach for the stars. It will run from August 24 to September. Henrietta s story is particularly inspiring in this anniversary year, says David Shane, BVT Associate Artistic Director. She was a pioneer, just as Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and so many other powerful women were and continue to be. We are thrilled to tell her story and tell the stories, imagined by six diverse and visionary female playwrights, as part of our Hear Me Roar season. Each show will run for two weekends. Week One is Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Week Two is Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. with 2 p.m. matinees on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday. For the full season calendar and schedule details, visit Subscriptions are currently on sale in packages starting at $87, and can be purchased online at or by calling the box office at Individual tickets go on sale in February. Individual ticket prices are: adults $4, seniors $2, students $18, and children $1. Additional Hear Me Roar events will be scheduled at all three partner sites during the summer season. For information, contact us at Constellation Brands returns as the Season Producer and Canandaigua National Bank as the Associate Producer of Bristol Valley Theater s 2017 Summer Season, which is also sponsored in part by funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. 7 Nature in the Little Finger Lakes Set tracks A fresh stage of snow is honest. Secret lives surrounding us are suddenly cast before our eyes. Even still, tacks, patterns, scats, and eat marks are mysteries to unravel. The children at Forest School tell me they ve discovered snake tracks under the glazed pines. I smile because, of course, snakes (who are ectothermic) are deep asleep underground this time of year, but I have an inkling about what they are seeing even before I look. Together we investigate these loops of tunnels in the snow, just an inch wide. We discover a thick layer of ice beneath the ropes of snow, so the rodent a vole or maybe a shrew must have had to push, claw, chew, or break its way up into the fluffy layer above in order to travel unseen. The type of snow on the landscape can provide safe haven or demise to small animals underground. Crusty snows, ice, or no snow at all, aids hawks and owls above to tune in to a meal more easily. Snow is insulation and cover for small mammals, allowing for the ability to go grazing on plant seeds and roots in silence, unseen. I am compelled into the art of tracking. These are the neighbors I rarely see some of them the same types who, last spring, nipped off the bright green bean shoots just unfurling in my garden and the curled kale just up. Here is the timeline of a story of a life beyond my own, its past behind and ahead, its next moment. Theirs is a story without words, but instead full of senses and now and intuition. I come and touch their path not knowing really which direction I should follow, nor which silence will take me there. I bend to find a clear print in which to count toes five fingers or four? Are the front and hind feet the same? I look across the white surface to discern the pattern, blue within the snow. What gait do they use? Are they walkers, bounders, or waddlers? Following such clues I may come upon earthy, dug-out food caches under the snow or a single hair caught on a twig, shiny pellets of scat, or urine that smells of creosote. Following a set of tracks and scat with a child, we came right upon the animal, who hopped quickly away, astonished at being discovered. And last week I followed two sets of little hands and feet that eventually lead to the base of a hollow white pine, once filled with bees. I wanted to knock, but I assumed they knew I was there. I wonder what the animals know that I do not? What do they track? What do they dream? I ve been known to wonder too long, to lose my own sense of time in the long cords of connection that suddenly appear with the magic of snow. Each track is a moment. Each print imprints something in me so much so that sometimes I wonder if I have taken the role of tracker, or if the tracks, instead, have taken me.
