4 Katahdin Corner KHSI Extends a Record More Registered Katahdins Sold in 2015 than in any Previous Year Another important milestone has been reached by Katahdin breeders. More registered Katahdins were sold in 2015 than in any previous year. Transfers increased 18% over 2014! Increasing the numbers of registered sheep is also good, but the key statistic is selling more sheep as evidenced by transfers. Numbers of Katahdins registered and recorded increased slightly over 2014, but did not set a record. A second important milestone is that there were more KHSI members in 2015 than any previous year. Congratulations to all of you and your hard work promoting Katahdins. To help all of you with your sales and return customers, the publication and promotion committees worked on a new Guide to Katahdin Hair Sheep that was a special edition of Katahdin Hairald. Take the time to let Roxanne Newton of Georgia and Kathy Bielek of Ohio know how much you appreciate their hard work. There are others who worked on the project, but it was Roxanne and Kathy who spent hundreds of hours. Thank you! Guides are available for $3.00 each from KHSI Operations. To order, send a check or money order to cover $3.00 per copy to: KHSI Operations, PO Box 778, Fayetteville, AR It is worth noting that both Honorary Members of KHSI who helped found Katahdin Hair Sheep International contacted us to tell us how impressive this publication is. You can also download a copy from the KHSI website or use this abbreviated link The 12 th Annual KHSI Expo promises to be hot and not just because it is Cookeville, Tennessee on the first weekend in August. The Expo Program committee of Robert Walker, Lynn Fahrmeier, Steve Bull and Carl Ginapp are to be commended for organizing another stellar educational program. Participants can look forward to good speakers and a great tour. Check out the quality of presentations and the schedule on the inside back cover and page 32. Don t put off making reservations for your hotel room since Katahdin sheep breeders will be competing for rooms with folks traveling along highway 127, the largest garage sale in the country. 5 Genetic Selection of Sheep Did We Base our Selection on a Single Observation? Jim Morgan, PhD Arkansas Sheep Breeder It is pretty safe to state that we have all at one time in our lives created a truth based on one observation. It can be a health treatment for ourselves or a person s behavior. If we are honest, we probably do it several times a week. How does this apply to sheep? Many of us have used single observations when we buy a sheep from another producer to stereotype a whole flock. I bought a ram from Ranch X and I will never buy from him again. His offspring required more deworming than lambs out of my ram. The stereotype is to believe that all sheep from Ranch X have no parasite resistance. Or I bought a ewe Farm Y and we had to pull all her lambs. We then go on to assume all ewes on Farm Y as prone to lambing issues. In the both of the above examples, we as shepherds are stereotyping whole flocks based on a single sheep. Let s turn the tables and consider how most of us evaluate our own flock. Do I stereotype my whole flock based on the poor performance of a single sheep on my farm? No way! Typically, most of us ignore our bottom 20-30% that go to the sale barn or are culled after 2-3 years. There are always a few lambs that receive the worst genes from both parents or that performed well as lambs but not so well when they matured. In my flock, I know that 30% of the sheep I ve kept as replacements or as sires because they were such good lambs or had excellent sires and dams were moved to the dinner plate a few years later. I am quite pleased they were not sold to others as the superior breeding stock I thought they were. Another way to look at this is the following example. How many of us keep five or more ewe lambs from our flock in a year? Many of us do it every year. The next questions are: What percent of that ewe lamb cohort are still present for their 2 nd breeding season? How many are still present for their 3 rd or 4 th breeding season? In most cases after 2-3 lamb crops, we ve culled the poor performers, the ewes with mastitis, the ewes who cull themselves and die, and those with repeated singles. Four years later we may only have 50-75% of those ewes. In this example, we are evaluating a group of ewes based on the performance of five to ten sheep. To be truthful to ourselves, we need to apply the same criteria to sheep we buy. To draw strong conclusions about a flock, our judgment needs to be based on the purchase of 5-10 ewes. Even that can risky, if it turns out that the sire used in a source flock for one year was a dud. How many are performing acceptably or at superior levels two years later and three years later? One ram or one ewe is not enough to stereotype the whole flock of origin. Continued on page The Katahdin Hairald Page

6 Soyhulls: the Almost Perfect Feed By Susan Schoenian, U of Maryland Small Ruminant Extension Specialist Editor s Note - This article was first published in 2016 in Wild & Woolly, Vol 15(1) by U of Maryland Extension. The title could also be modified to Soyhulls: the Almost Perfect Supplement for Ruminants. Soybean hulls, or soyhulls as they are more commonly called, are almost the perfect feed for livestock. Depending upon cost and availability, they can replace some (or all) of the hay or grain in the diet. They are the ideal supplement for forage-fed animals. Soyhulls are a by-product of soybean processing. They are the outer coat of the bean. Soyhulls work best when they are mixed with other feeds or fed pelleted, as they are a bulky, dusty feed. They are generally palatable to most livestock. Soyhulls are classified as an energy feed. Though they can be variable in composition, their book values are 77 percent TDN (energy), 13 percent CP (crude protein), 0.55 percent calcium (Ca), and 0.17 percent phosphorus (P). They have a similar nutrient composition as oats and ear corn, but with a more desirable ratio of Ca to P and more copper (Cu). Unlike grains, the energy in soyhulls is derived from highly digestible fiber. Soyhulls are high in NDF (neutral detergent fiber) and low in starch. Genetic Selection of Sheep, continued from page Starchy feeds increase the acidity of the rumen and can cause metabolic acidosis. Using soyhulls as an energy source will minimize the risk of acidosis as compared to traditional energy sources. On the other hand, though soyhulls are high in fiber, they are a poor source of roughage or effective fiber. Effective fiber is necessary for rumen health. It is related to particle size. Soyhulls also have a high rate of passage through the rumen. For these reasons, it is usually recommended that adequate long-stemmed forage (fiber) be included in the diets of all ruminants. There are two primary uses of soyhulls in a feeding program for small ruminants The first is as a supplement for animals grazing (or consuming) low to moderate quality forages. The second is as a replacement for some (or all) of the hay or grain in the diet. The primary reason to supplement grazing livestock is to improve forage utilization and performance. Supplementation may also improve resilience to internal parasites. Researchers have determined that soyhulls can replace corn as an energy source on a one-toone basis. If grassfed (USDA certified) is the goal, soyhulls can be fed to grazing livestock, as USDA s grassfed marketing claim allows unlimited supplementation with soyhulls and other fibrous feedstuffs. For others, the best use of soyhulls might be as a replacement for some (or all) of the grain or hay in the diet. Sometimes hay is too expensive or in limited supply. Research has shown that soyhulls can replace some (or all) of the hay in the diet of ewes and lambs, with no negative effects on performance or rumen (animal) health. In fact, soyhull-based diets may improve performance in these situations. Other research has shown that soyhulls can replace starchy feeds, such as corn and barley, in the diets of sheep and goats. An added benefit is that soyhull diets may increase the fat percentage in the milk of ewes and does. In finishing diets, soyhulls may be a more economical choice than traditional feedstuffs, while reducing the risk of rumen acidosis. Author Note: To read a more in-depth article about feeding soyhulls to small ruminants, go to sheepandgoat.com/#!soyhulls/cbwi. Editor s Note: Some producers selling into organic/sustainable markets need to consider that most soy hulls will be from GMO soybeans from herbicide sprayed fields. However, using soy hulls to replace corn reduces the acidity of the rumen and decreases the negative effect on omega-3 fat levels that corn has. Below are some of my personal single observation truths. Note that while the main focus of the article is genetics, flock health treatments are also prone to single observation truths. i) I treated two ill ewes with probiotics twelve years ago and they immediately were better and I concluded I had a great health tool. I am still treating with probiotics but they don t all get better. Probiotics don t hurt and have a decent scientific explanation. ii) I drenched a sick ewe with a quart of water 2 times a day 10 years ago and she recovered quickly. I thought it was the wonder treatment and realized it was also what many MDs recommend for cold and flu. I still drench ill sheep with water, but don t have miraculous recoveries every time. It doesn t hurt (unless it goes into the lungs) and is a good idea. iii) The first ewe lamb I kept out of a ewe 16 years ago, was one of the five best ewes I have ever raised; the next five were in the bottom 10%. I couldn t believe records and kept those five for years because that ewe had one excellent lamb. iv)identifying superior breeding stock. A breeder a) has sold a ram for $4000 at a national sale OR b) has one of the top EBV (estimated breeding value) rams OR c) has a grand champion sheep at a national show. The temptation is to stereotype the whole flock and assume that any sheep from those flocks are superior. Remember, just as one lemon is not indicative of a whole flock, one superior sheep is not indicative of the whole flock. What can we do? Here are some suggestions. Make observations of a flock based on 5 or 10 ewes, not just one. Be careful of evaluating a flock based on one ram. Use EBVs (estimated breeding values) from NSIP since they include performance of relatives. If several of the relatives are doing worse or superior, it is reflected in the EBVs. EBVs do it as well as any tool we have. We should always ask ourselves with our sheep selection as with many parts of our life: Did I just base my conclusion on one or two observations? 8 Social Media For Livestock Sales By Pam Adams, President, MPWV Meat Goat Producers Association Editor s Note - This article was first published in 2016 in Wild & Woolly, Vol 15(1) by U of Maryland Extension. The article was written about goats, but the information applies to sheep too. Who would ever think to use Facebook or other social media sites to sell your livestock or products? Well, I have moved in that direction and have had very good luck. I can post an ad on multiple sites and have interested people see the ad almost instantly. Most people have notifications set on so that they are notified when others post on the sites that they frequent the most. This gives the seller instant visibility and the buyer a chance to see what you may be selling immediately. I recently posted an ad to sell two buck pygmy kids that I did not want to keep and within 5 minutes, I had them both sold. (Can t get that kind of response when posting an ad in the Lancaster Farmer or local newspaper). I also sell my boer goats quickly using these sites as well, and I can set the price I want rather than taking them to the livestock market. This is a great way to sell breeding stock, 4-H goats, or just meat goats for slaughter. So how do you get started? Step 1: Create an account on Facebook by going to com and signing up for an account. You need to enter your name, or phone number and a password. Your birthday is needed as a security measure. The account is free. Step 2: After you have an account, you should set up your profile and contact information and set your privacy settings. Step 3: Once you have completed Step 2, you are ready to find friends that have similar interests as you or join special interest groups. To do this go to the top of the screen where it says Search Facebook. Enter the words Goats for Sale in and hit search (the little magnifying glass). Many sites will be listed. Select one and if it is listed as a public group you can join immediately. If it is listed as a closed group you will have to request to join the group. Many of these sites have specific rules you must follow to post items for sale, but you also can see what others are selling if you are looking for a new buck or doe to add to your herd. Pay attention to the location of the site. Once you visit the site, look at the information on the page to sense if this sale page is in your area. Often times it will state in the name of the site, but not always. For example Boer Goats for Sale or Boer Goats for Sale in Maryland. If you are willing to sell nationally then join the site anyway. Many buyers will come far distances for the right animal. Step 4: After you have sold your animal or products, go back to all sites where you have posted the For Sale ad and add a comment that the animal has been sold. This will keep your name in the limelight and let others know that you have sold the animal or product. By keeping your name in the limelight, you may get repeat callers looking for other animals before you post another ad. 9 Doyle Weaver Katahdins BAG 1727 Top selling ram at the Expo in Pipestone. Sires loins and ewes that milk very well. Lost him last spring to predators. BAG 2140 Purchased this ram at the Expo in Cookeville. Sires good loins and adds muscle to leg area. Very good 60 and 120 day weights. SCD 3547 Did not get an acceptable photo of this ram. This fall born ram was purchased at the Midwest Stud Ram Sale. I felt he would square up foundation on my older ewes. Young lambs look very good at this time. After 12 years raising Katahdins, I have developed several opinions that guide my direction of management. There are as many ways to raise sheep as there are people. All my land is very low quality that rolls or stands on edge making it difficult to properly fence. I started small to see if sheep could fit in my life. The goal I set was to raise rams and ewes that could adapt to any type of operation and make a positive contribution. We lamb in January. CSA 626 Purchased this ram at the Midwest Stud Ram Sale. I felt he showed the most honest growth of any ram in the barn while not giving up any muscle. The flock is checked twice daily for lambs. New additions are weighed and tagged, then placed in bonding pens overnight. Twins and singles are separated and all single rams are banded. Ewes are started on one pound of good 14% feed daily and the ones with twins are slowly increased to 2 pounds, ewes with single lambs are slowly increased to 1.5 pounds. I offer ADM 21% creep feed when the lambs start eating with the ewes. Our best estimate was 3 pound of feed to each pound of gain - at a cost of $.63 per pound of gain and sale price of $2.30 per pound made this a very profitable expense. Lambs are weaned and weighed at 60 day average and slowly switched to a 15% grower feed at 2 pounds daily. When wethers are approximately 75 pounds (around 90 days) they are sold at the local sale barn. Ram and ewes lambs continue until 120 days when they are weighed and any rams not meeting gain or conformation requirements are banded. The ewe and ram lambs (sorted) are then switched to maintenance feed and continue on pasture until sold. This allows continued growth without excess fat which is detrimental to later production, especially in ewes. Come by and tell me what YOU think. We plan to consign lambs to 3 sales this year. 10 Veterinary Feed Directive Big Changes January 1, 2017 for US James Morgan, PhD, KHSI Operations Author s Note: I am not a DVM. The interpretation of the rules may change minimally before 2017 but the summary below reflects what experts understand right now. If a producer plans to use or to continue to feed antibiotics, it is important that they work with their DVM soon to be ready for First, a definition of the acronyms is needed. FDA stands for Food and Drug Administration and VFD stands for Veterinary Feed Directive. Feed directive refers to a drug being added or mixed into either food or drinking water. The new rules do not apply to injected pharmaceuticals. This is a controversial regulation, but it will be enforced. It is less restrictive than what is currently in effect in the European Union, New Zealand and Australia. Advice by presenters at the recent American Sheep Industry (ASI) meetings on January 29-30, 2016 in Scottsdale Arizona is that it is important for meat producers to work within the regulations and prepare now. The goal of FDA is to limit the development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria that can cause increased harm to human health and one potential risk comes from feeding livestock antibiotics. Who does it affect? It affects feeding of pharmaceuticals in all livestock operations that market animals or meat products that enter the human food chain. What pharmaceuticals are not affected? a) Antibiotics that are labeled for sheep and injected. b) Ionophores (coccidiostats) labeled for sheep and added to minerals or feed will continue to be legal. Note that extra-label drug injections still require a valid veterinary client relationship Extra-label is defined as being administered in a manner that is not consistent with the label including a species not listed on label, different route, frequency or dose or for a condition not approved. Many common over-the-counter pharmaceuticals are not labeled for sheep. To understand the new rules, it is imperative that a producer differentiate between injected versus added to feed or water. The regulations going into effect in 2017 will prevent feeding of any extra-label use of regulated drugs to meat animals. These are big changes. Two of the most common pharmaceuticals that many sheep producers use include: Chlortetracycline (common trade name - Aureomycin) that is often mixed with feed to control certain bacterial abortions in sheep and various sulfa-containing drugs that are added to water Strelow Ranch Foundation Stock from Dosch Katahdins and Lillehaugen Farms Adams, ND Sid & Julie Strelow (c) sids@polarcomm.com February & March Lambing to treat coccidiosis. Sulfa drugs include sulfamethazine and sulfa-dimethoxane, A producer can obtain a VFD for chlortetracycline at an approved dose, but currently will no longer be able to use the sulfa drugs for treatment of coccidiosis in sheep. There are sheep producers that these directives will not affect since they are not feeding antibiotics or mixing them in water. There are other sheep producers who will experience major impacts from these changes. What is required to feed chlortetracycline? First there needs to be a diagnosed health issue. Second, a producer needs a veterinary client relationship. Third, the DVM will need to file a VFD with a licensed feed supplier. Fourth, the feed directive is in place for a maximum of 6 months and can only be used for the length of time on the VFD. Finally, producers, DVMs and the licensed feed store will need to keep a copy of the VFD on file for 2 years. A speaker at ASI suggested that producers be proactive and make sure that they have a veterinary client relationship and know if their feed supplier is licensed. Small producers who need smaller amounts of grain may find this cost-prohibitive. Livestock producers will need to use preventative practices (such as vaccines) to minimize abortions, and use coccidiostats to help control coccidiosis. Less confinement can probably help, but is not an easy option for many producers, especially those that have deep snow. More care in biosecurity to prevent acquisition of bacteria that cause abortions is another option that will help with prevention. Sulfa drugs for coccidiosis will not be legal to use in sheep water, even though in the past a DVM could prescribe it or producers could purchase them over the counter. There are several resources online. In the next few months, livestock extension agents, DVMs, and feed suppliers will be educating themselves about VFD regulations. A video of a presentation at the ASI Meetings in Scottsdale, AZ on 1/29/16 can be viewed at The following online slide show is very short and has some good short clear explanations of VFD: extension.iastate.edu/feci/3stbeef/vfd.pdf Bottom line: don t wait until January talk to your veterinarian soon about what VFD regulations could mean for your sheep operation. 11 Need Insurance for Your Livestock Guardian/ Protection or Herding Dogs? Jim Morgan, KHSI Operations Office You are probably not covered for people bitten by your Akbash or Great Pyrenees. The American Sheep Industry has developed a new insurance product to cover risks associated with owning livestock dogs. This is still in the beginning stage and covers $50,000 of liability. Since it is a brand new insurance concept, the maximum coverage is lower than most liability policies and doesn t cover damage caused by guard donkeys or llamas. But the goal in the future is to increase total dollar coverage and cover donkeys and llamas as well. What is the risk? If your guardian or working dog bites a person that comes onto your property or a child tries to pet your herding dog(s) in your pick up while you are drinking coffee in the café or buying groceries, there is risk. Typically, insurance policies, including farm liability policies, refuse to cover bites by dogs called guardians. Right or wrong, judges and insurance companies use the guard term to lump livestock guardian dogs with the attack/guard breeds of dogs. Since attack dogs are trained to bite, insurance companies don t typically cover bites. It can be more complex if a person is trespassing, but that defense may not work. The new insurance policy recommends signs that have livestock protection dogs at work rather than livestock guardian dogs at work. Call the American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) for more information at and they will direct you to the agent. This is a brand new policy and we expect that there will be more information at the ASI website soon The policy helps support ASI. Note: the policies are only available for members of ASI. So, join your state sheep association to become a member of ASI. Book Review 1) A Shepherd s Life by James Rebanks (ISBN ) We heard from Mississippi member Sherrie Wiygul, a long time Katahdin raiser (joined KHSI in 1994) and KHSI board member for many years. She suggested an interesting book to read about raising sheep in the United Kingdom and here s what she had to say: A Shepherd s Life is set in the Lake District of England and features two ancient breeds, the Herdwicks and Swaledales. They are raised part of the year on the fells, common land, much of it donated by Beatrix Potter, who was herself a good breeder of Herdwicks. The book is well-written and will make you grateful you raise easy-care Katahdins. Best of all, it emphasizes that almost mystical bond between shepherds, their sheep and their land. Strangely enough, I found it prominently displayed at our favorite bookstore, Lemuria, in Jackson, MS. Maybe there is hope for the future! DOSCH KATAHDINS RAISED TO WORK FOR YOU! 16 Focus on Ewe-TH: Aly Francis Katahdins...A Breed Whose Time Has Come! From a Speech by Aly Francis Editor s Note: This presentation by high school freshman Aly Francis won the Missouri FFA Speech Contest in December 2015 It was an early summer day in June when he loaded the stock racks in his Granddad s red International pick-up and they headed to a farm just south of Madison, Missouri, to make the purchase of eight blackface ewes and a Suffolk ram. For a grand total of threehundred fifteen dollars, my Dad was the fourth generation of his family to be a shepherd in Monroe County. After that first 200% lamb crop yielding sixteen live lambs, Dad was hooked on sheep production and thus established the foundation for what would become the fifth generation of sheep producers some forty years later. I am proud to be continuing the traditions of sheep production in our family through my FFA SAE program. Our operation has transitioned from the wool growing meat sheep purchased in 1975, to Katahdin hair sheep today. Often referred to as a breed whose time has come. Katahdins exhibit a number of positive breed characteristics that are making them extremely popular across the country in both purebred and commercial flocks. The Katahdin is a breed of hair sheep that was developed in the United States in the 1950 s by Michael Piel. The breed got its name from Mt. Katahdin in Maine, near where Mr. Piel s farm was located. The Piel farm had several thousand head of sheep roaming its pastures when Piel decided that progress in selection for traits important to the production of meat would be greatly enhanced by the elimination of wool as a major factor for selection (reprinted in Katahdin Hairald, Spring 2015). His goal was to combine the hair coat, prolificacy, and hardiness of the Virgin Island sheep with the body confirmation and rate of growth of wool breeds. After nearly twenty years of experimenting with numerous breed crosses, Piel collected a flock of meat sheep that did not require shearing; Katahdins. Unfortunately, Mr. Piel died unexpectedly in December, His wife continued his work in genetic improvement of his prized flock of sheep and was able to see the Katahdin Hair Sheep International sheep registry form in (Katahdin Hairald, Spring 2015)) Aly Francis with State FFA Speech Award Interest and enthusiasm for Katahdins has developed very steadily since the mid-70s to a present day high of 8,000 animals registered annually, leading all purebred registries. (Banner Publications, March 2015) As for commercial production, it is estimated that 20 percent of flocks across the United States are based on Katahdin genetics. Why all of the hype over the sheep with hair you ask? The benefits of Katahdins range from their climate adaptability, shedding hair coats, ability to breed out-of-season, and their natural genetic parasite resistance. It s really not just hype when all of these positive characteristics are reality, wrapped up in one genetic package. It is a common myth that because Katahdins do not have a heavy wool coat they can t take the cold weather, according to John Kirchhoff of Moberly, Missouri. (Kirchhoff) The reality is that the breed thrives in hot humid areas of south Florida, the dry arid areas of West Texas and the frozen provinces of Western Canada. Their hair coat is much like that of cattle, growing thicker in colder weather and then shedding during the spring and early summer. It is not uncommon for our ewes to sleep outside during the coldest of weather and have un-melted snow on their backs in the morning. Having a fine hair coat after spring shedding allows the animals to maintain a cooler body temperature which means that even during the hottest of days the animals are out in the pasture grazing, turning grass into weight gain. Compared to many breeds of wool sheep, Katahdins have superior reproductive characteristics that make them desirable as a basis for ewe flocks across the country. The animals reach puberty early, are very fertile and have a high level of prolificacy. Most sheep are short day breeders meaning that as day lengths start to become shorter the animals start breeding. Typically this means that ewes breed in the fall and lamb in the spring. This is not the case with Katahdins, which will breed at any time during the year. This makes them ideal for producing fall lambs or for producers who want to operate an accelerated lambing flock. This is the characteristic that prompted my dad to make the change to Katahdin genetics. We lamb our ewes three times in two years thus giving us as much as an extra lamb and a half to sell per ewe. Having these lambs born at various times throughout the year means that we can market lambs during multiple marketing periods. According to Dr. Kennedy at Pipestone Vet Clinic, Katahdins are the future basis of the ewe flock in the United States over the next 50 years. (Kennedy) Another important reason for the growing Katahdin popularity is their natural resistance to internal parasites. Worm problems for all sheep producers is one of the major obstacles to profitable production. This is especially the case in areas of warm moist climates. Many flocks are having resistance to the de-wormers that are available on the market. Although Continued on page 16 Page 14 The Katahdin Hairald

The Junior Show had 18 juniors from 8 states. Focus on Eweth: Aly Francis, continued from page 14 no animals are completely resistant, having some natural immunity to the internal parasites is very important and contributes to the Katahdin breed being a hardy, easy care animal. When Dad and my Great Grandpa pulled back in the driveway and jumped those eight ewes off the old red International pick-up s tailgate he was excited about being involved in the sheep industry. He was excited to be carrying on his grandpa s tradition. Little did he envision that 40-years later I would walk in those footsteps with a completely different breed of sheep. In 1975, Dad had no idea what a Katahdin hair sheep even looked like, much less all of the ideal characteristics they possessed. Michael Piel was just putting the finishing touches on his breeding program to create the ideal sheep that produced a hardy, adaptable, low maintenance sheep that never needed shearing. Today Piel s breeding program is living strong and proving its success day in and day out on farms all across the country, including our farm, with Katahdins; a breed whose time has come! 27 Updates on Scrapie in Katahdins Jim Morgan, PhD KHSI Operations Office Over the years, our office has heard from several callers that tell us that Katahdins and other hair sheep do not have scrapie. There are two documented cases of Katahdin flocks with scrapie in the past 11 years. The first was in 2005 and the second in Scrapie has also been identified in the other hair breeds in the USA. No need to panic since scrapie in hair sheep has always been rare. The risk of purchasing scrapie for any breed of sheep in the USA is lower now than it has ever been. The Mandatory Scrapie Eradication program coupled with slaughter surveillance has greatly decreased scrapie by removing susceptible animals from infected and source flocks including animals that were sold out of these flocks (there is an indemnification program to pay shepherds for the sheep). Managing Risk Scrapie is a neurodegenerative disease that is spread from infected animals primarily via placental fluid and tissues to sheep with susceptible genotypes and to goats. Rams can have scrapie, but they are unlikely to spread it to other sheep since they don t produce placental fluid and tissues. New producers also need to understand that sheep can be tested for their resistance to scrapie. Sheep that have the genotype, QR or RR at codon 171 of their prion protein are resistant to the main scrapie strain in the USA. Sheep that are QQ at codon 171 are susceptible. Most transmission is vertical from QQ dams to their QQ lambs. But any susceptible sheep or goat that licks placental fluid/tissues or eats bedding, feed or soil that was contaminated with these from a ewe with scrapie may acquire the disease. The disease may also be passed through milk or colostrum from infected ewes/does. As mentioned above, scrapie is not a big risk for Katahdin producers and most flocks don t practice risky behaviors. Understanding the few risk factors and options for mitigating scrapie risk is important. A) Buying QQ ewes (or ewes of unknown genotype) from producers that have multiple breeds of sheep, especially black faced meat sheep increases risk of acquiring scrapie. B) Buying QQ ewes (or ewes of unknown genotype) from flocks that are buying larger numbers of sheep from multiple sources increases risk of acquiring scrapie. C) If your operation, is buying QQ ewes (or ewes of unknown Continued on page 27 Our 2016 lambs are here and they are outstanding! 29 Updates on Scrapie in Katahdins, continued from page 25 genotype) from flocks with a higher level of risk (multiple sheep breeds present, sourcing ewes from sale barns or commercial flocks with sheep of unknown origin) risk of scrapie spreading in your flock if introduced can be greatly decreased by using RR rams. If only RR rams are present, all offspring are resistant to scrapie. Knowing the status of the biosecurity program of flocks that sheep are acquired from, informs the buyer of scrapie risk and can suggests actions to minimize risk. Is it necessary to use only RR/QR rams and ewes to have acceptable risk? No, the risk can be adequately mitigated by knowing the genotypes of the sheep you are breeding, using strategies that will keep the percentage of QQ sheep in the flock low and/or by sourcing sheep from flocks with low scrapie risk such as Katahdin flocks that have been closed to ewe additions for over 5 years. Keep up the good work, comply with Mandatory Scrapie Eradication Program and make sure that any sheep or goat that leaves your premises for slaughter, breeding sales or show is identified with a USDA tag. It promises to be another huge success with great programs, excellent opportunities to talk sheep, learn more about sheep and buy excellent Katahdins. Cookeville is located on Interstate 40 which runs east-west through Tennessee. Cookeville is home of Tennessee Tech University and is in the Upper Cumberland region of Middle Tennessee. It is billed as the Heart of the Highlands of Tennessee. Within 40 minutes are three lakes made by the Army Corp of Engineers. Depending on your direction of travel, you may pass near or through Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry, Memphis and its music tradition of Blues and Rock and Roll, or Great Smoky National Park. No matter which direction you are driving, you will pass by numerous excellent state parks and many Civil War Battlefields. 15 minutes from the cluster of motels, is Burgess Falls State Park (day use), located on the Falling Water River. It is noted for its natural beauty and four waterfalls that cascade down from over 250 feet in elevation. The last of these falls is the most spectacular, plunging more than 130 feet into the gorge. The area was originally populated by Native Americans of the Cherokee, Creek and Chickasaw tribes. Your choice of culture, history and nature awaits your interest. Likewise, 15 minutes from the Expo site is Cummins Falls. Cummins Falls State Park is an idyllic, but rugged, 211-acre day-use park located nine miles north of Cookeville on the Blackburn Fork State Scenic River on the Eastern Highland Rim. The area has been a scenic spot and swimming hole for local residents for more than 100 years. Cummins Falls is Tennessee s eighth largest waterfall in volume of water and is 75 feet high. Cookeville has all the popular chain restaurants and some famous local ones like Ralph s Donuts and Cream City Ice Cream. If you know or have met me, you can tell I highly recommend both! The closest large airport is 70 miles to the west on the east side of Nashville. Knoxville and Chattanooga Tennessee also have airports and are 100 and 110 miles respectively from Cookeville. See the article on page 34 for hotel information. Make your reservations now. The same weekend as Expo is the World s Largest Yard Sale, the Highway 127 Yard Sale passing through Tennessee. Hotel rooms will be at a premium and will go fast. Because of this, KHSI needed to reserve smaller blocks at several hotels. Page 30 The Katahdin Hairald

34 12 th Annual KHSI Expo to be held in Cookeville, Tennessee August 4-6 Shepherd 101 & 201 Presentations Coupled with the National Katahdin Sale By Expo Program Committee: Robert Walker, Lynn Fahrmeier, Steve Bull & Carl Ginapp Excellent sheep! Several flocks have contacted our office and plan on bringing superior rams and ewes to this event. Consigned Katahdins need to arrive by noon on Thursday August 4 th at Hyder Burks Agricultural Pavilion at Tennessee Tech University, Cookeville. The viewing of the sale sheep and discussions with other breeders are considered by many Expo attendees as one of the many Expo highlights. Excellent & Exciting Education! The speakers are an exciting line up. Here is the latest information. Tennessee State Extension will be a co-host of the educational sessions on Thursday and Friday. Thursday starts out with a farm tour of Big Spring Farm. Greg Brann s farm has been featured on RFD TV. This is an opportunity not to be missed to view excellent forage management and multi-species grazing. Even if you don t plan to add cattle to your operation, visiting this farm will help you learn the language and be able to talk to cattle men and women who come to your operation. The tour includes lunch. Meet at Hyder Burks Pavilion by 8:15 on Thursday morning August 4 to catch the bus. Note that pre-registration is required for the tour and Expo Registration forms will mail in late June. The Thursday evening and Friday 101 and 201 sessions promise to be a great learning experience. There will be topics for all. Dr Ron Lewis of University Nebraska Lincoln is a great teacher who is effective at presenting and teaching to a wide audience. He has worked on genetics of sheep in Australia, Texas, Virginia and Scotland. A wealth of experience. Greg Brann is the Grazing Lands specialist for the Tennessee state office for USDA NRCS (National Resource Conservation Service). Greg presented at the 2013 KHSI Expo in Tennessee Lazy D Ranch The Road to Top Genetics on forage management and KHSI had requests to have a repeat performance. We are pleased that he is available and can also host us for our farm tour on Thursday. Dr Scott Greiner will demonstrate the use of ultrasound to determine amount of muscling in the rib eye and fat thickness. Dr Greiner is from Virginia Tech and developed the standards for certifying technicians in the USA for scanning sheep rib eye and fat thickness. For many years, Dr Greiner has been the head of the National Collegiate Livestock Judging contest in Louisville, Kentucky and KHSI plans to have him talk about conformation as well. Practices for parasite management control in small ruminants have been revolutionized in the USA since Dr Joan Burke (USDA Agricultural Research Service in Booneville, AR) has been a key part of this change as one of the founders of the American Con- Continued on page 33 Thanks to all our 2016 future Buyers who have confidence in our breeding program and making it a personal record reservation year! Dr Burke has also received several grants to research parasite resistance in Katahdins resulting in improvement of parasite resistance in Katahdins as well as documentation of their parasite resistance. Rusty Burgett, previously director of the Meats Lab at Ohio State University, manager of the sheep flock at Iowa State University and the manager of the University of Wisconsin dairy sheep flock, will be doing a Caney Creek Farms Katahdins basic sheep nutrition seminar. Rusty will also present his newly published guide for buying rams. Dr An Peischel is the Small Ruminant Extension Specialist for Tennessee State. She has presented to audiences all over the country from Minnesota to Hawaii and has great information to share about management, marketing, reproduction and selection. There won t be anyone asleep during Susan Schoenian s presentation on marketing and cross-breeding lambs. Susan is entertaining, she will challenge basic assumptions and make you think. Susan manages one of the best websites for providing extensive and practical information about management of small ruminants. She hails from University of Maryland, raises Katahdins and is in great demand as a speaker. This will be a very different talk from the one she gave at the 2015 Expo. With this strong educational program, the KHSI Expo Committee feels that it will be a great learning situation for all who attend. Oh yes, there will be Katahdin lamb on the menu for the two Friday meals. Registration information will be mailed at the end of June. TOP OF YOUR DO LIST: Make sure that you reserve a hotel room now.
