Volume 3 Issue 3 President's Message Jim Enriquez We had great support from club members in setting up and organizing numerous quality events for March and April. Needless to say, several club members were able to participate in social activities, drivers and a very successful car show It s what our club is all about. Key Events & Organizers Dinner and book signing with Barbara McQueen - Caccamo, Rhode Ostrich Festival Parade and lunch - Caccamo, Rhode Julio G s Corvette s On the Green - Deacon, Ray Laughlin overnighter -Rhode, Caccamo Founder s Day Driver- Kerber, Enriquez All the events were great examples of the variety of activities we share within our club. Plans are already set for two major events in May as well. So the club activities are on the up swing as we head into another Arizona summer season. Yes, it will be hot, sunny and dry, but there are still cool places and events we can see. Give it some thought and I am sure our Activities Director, Rhonda Deacon, can help you pick a date to sponsor or cosponsor a club activity. See you at our May meeting, Jim 1

Your price is only $0-$3.00 per item above club cost.

A Gala Evening with Barbara McQueen March 2009 Bob Caccamo - Event Coordinator CCA Kicks Off March Activity Madness On Friday, March 6, thirteen members of our club participated in a promotional and dining out activity in Historic Downtown Chandler. Barbara McQueen, actor Steve McQueen s widow opened her pictorial exhibit, The Last Mile, at the Chandler Center for the Arts. Barbara s book (of the same title) chronicles the last three years of Steve s life and his battle with lung cancer. Many of the pictures on exhibit at the Center are from images included in the book. Club members helped draw attention to the event by showing their Corvettes in front of the Center, dining with the McQueen entourage and then attending the gala grand opening. Dinner at La Stalla received rave reviews. Also gathering rave (or rage) reviews was the lively exchange of barbs initiated and instigated by none other than our own C.C.A. Corvair King, William Rhode. The levity was sweetened with desserts at the exhibit and as a thank you for our part in the event, Barbara donated a book to our club to be used for future fundraising efforts. Rhonda got added value to the book by having it autographed. Participants included: Jim and Pat Kerber, Jim and Esther Enriquez, Bill and Marge Rhode, Ray and Pat Jenkins, Dave and Kathy Golec, Rhonda and Rob Deacon and Bob Caccamo. 2

Chandler Ostrich Parade Bob Caccamo - Event Coordinator CCA Loves A Parade Nine chauffeurs extraordinaire from our service conscious club participated in the Chandler Ostrich Festival Parade on Saturday March 7, Bob Caccamo, Jim Kerber, Jim Enriquez, Rhonda Deacon, Marge Rhode, Joan Nieman, Dwight Gertsen, Jim Gray and Pat Jenkins drove the parade route with V.I.P. s riding shotgun, flashing smiles and practicing parade waving. Rhonda led the parade with Grand Marshal Eddie Basha seated next to her. Rhonda is to be commended for not leaving the parade route and detouring to Vegas as per Eddie s suggestion. Bob made it through the parade with Barbara McQueen without any stops and Jim Gray actually kept one eye on the road as he drove Arizona s Irish Beauty Colleen in his black C6. Dwight allowed Council Member Trinity Donovan to drive his C6 drop top and word is that jealous Council members all want to test drive his vehicle and have him be their driver next year. Look out Dwight! All drivers got a little bit of auto-cross practice driving the length of Arizona Ave. dodging the pile ons left by the equestrian entries. At parade end the drivers and their spouses headed to Sauce and a great lunch. (Good choice Rhonda.) This driver/service activity was hot fun and it is not even summer time. Special thanks go out to Bill tape man Rhode for making sure we all had the correct sign properly secured to our Vettes, complete with entry number and place in the parade. Thank you all for being flexible. As we all know after two parades.stuff happens! 3

March 2009 Corvettes On The Green" at Julio G s Rob Deacon & George Ray - Event Coordinators On March 14th, the Corvette Club of Arizona had a very successful 12th annual car show at Julio G's Restaurant in Scottsdale. This success was the result of many of the club members assisting George Ray and Rob Deacon with the coordination of the event. Support from Jim Gray, past event coordinator, was important to everything from trophies to advertising. George Ray and Rob Deacon split up the list of preparations with George organizing trophies, dash plaques, and handling most of the communications. Rob handled the registration, raffles, and announcing. As always Jim Enriquez was behind the scenes during the planning of the event. Jim Kerber posted a very nice event information package on "Cruizin' Arizona". This is where I believe the Arizona Republic tracked down Jim Gray and Rob Deacon for an article. We were all pleasantly surprised to see the article become a full-page - on the front page of the cars section of the Arizona Republic the day before the event. Rob's home phone number was included as the contact and he fielded over 100 calls on Friday. When the event started early on Saturday morning there was a team of CCA members to support the event. Many thanks to Janet Ray, Patti Kerber, and Rhonda Deacon for managing the registration and information tent. George Ray, Dwight Gertson, and Dave Friesz parked the cars while Jan and Bruce Mundy set up a professional sound system complete with a microphone for announcements. Sharon Lund had a "new system" this year that helped her sell lots of tickets for a very successful 50/50 raffle. Jim Gray not only sold tickets but we also recruited him for the prize drawings. 4

Corvettes On The Green" at Julio G s (continued) So how did the show turn out? It was a total success with a near capacity 55 registered Corvettes - C1 to C6 all represented. I was the first time that I have seen two 2009 ZR-1's at a show! The attendance at the event was elbow-to-elbow at times due to the Arizona Republic article. The attendance kept Julio G's very busy and Dick was extremely happy - even though he had to work during the event. The attendees, and the many guests that dropped by, seemed to really enjoy the cars, music, food, and weather. We brought over 100 CCA club information handouts and they were all given out. I'm sure Marge Rhode will get a few calls this month from potential new members as 44 of the registered corvettes were not from the CCA. Sun Country Corvette Club was once again the biggest supporter of the event with 10 cars registering. Craig Smith, President of Sun Country Corvette Club, accepted the new award for Most Registered Corvettes by one Club. Everything went smoothly and we had enough members supporting the event to allow everyone to enjoy lunch and the show. Article by Rob Deacon 5

March 2009 Laughlin Overnighter Marge & Bill Rhode Event Coordinators Lady Luck Dash for Cash Thirteen Corvettes left the McDonald s at the Pavilions about 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning with a Lady Luck CD and rally quiz in hand. While listening to the music, we headed toward Wickenburg to our first haircut stop (which we made in record time since Gold Rush Days was not in progress!) By that time, people realized that only some of the questions on the quiz were based on the CD. Other questions were based on Corvette knowledge, road awareness and inane obscure trivia. After a second stop in the metropolis of Wikieup, the parade of Vettes arrived at the River Palms shortly after noon and parked on the top floor of the parking garage where camera surveillance was available. It didn t take long for everyone to find their way to the buffet for lunch and then the rest of the afternoon was open for anything. Some took the River Walk, some gambled, some napped (!) and two of us graded quizzes. We met for dinner at The Lodge restaurant in the River Palms and probably the majority of us ordered the special two lobster tails for $19.95 and they were great! Then it was time for the prizes. But remember the rally quiz instruction sheet: there are no winners, only finishers. So-o-o, everyone got something for participating, and we would venture to say these awards set a whole new standard for the CCA term fabulous prizes! Complementary tickets to the Sunday morning buffet were part of the package and after that everyone was on their own. The last group of six Corvettes headed back to the Valley of the Sun about 11:30. Special thanks to Bob Caccamo for his help on this fun driver, and to Scott Feck for his sense of humor! Bill & Marge 6

Once arriving at the park, we parked our cars in formation which everyone at the park noticed. I even heard a German tourist excitedly explaining to his family about Corvette clubs as they took souvenir pictures of our cars. I have to admit, it was an impressive and unexpected sight at the Caverns. 34th CCA Founder s Day Event Kartchner Caverns The Enriquezes & The Kerbers Event Coordinators April 2009 Eighteen Corvettes and 35 drivers and passengers participated in the Corvette Club of Arizona s thirty-fourth anni versary celebration. Our trip took us south on the 10 freeway through the construction detours, photo speed enforcement areas and a final jog to State Hwy 90 to our destination, Kartchner Caverns State Park. After a quick picnic lunch we divided into two groups to make the cavern tour. Everything seemed to go off as planned and after the tour groups saw the awe and splendor of the caverns, we regrouped for a slice of anniversary cake and awards. Awards were given for answers to the road trip quiz. Even without the aid of her Blackberry, Kathy and Mike Terrey had the highest score. The awards for the three highest scores were Arizona travel and road books the winners can use for setting up next year s Founder s Day driver or another exciting day driving along Arizona s roads. 7

34th CCA Founder s Day Event Kartchner Caverns (continued) Crosstalk May-Jun 2009 Esther and I want to thank Jim & Patty Kerber for all their help. Once we announced the event, they immediately stepped up and organized the lunch and snack portion of the trip -- it really helped since we had a few family distractions leading up to the driver. It was a long day for the Kerber s since they were at Paradise Bakery by 6:30 AM to pick up our box lunches for the day. If the club would have been depending on me for the lunches, it might well have been the sheriff Joe special of green baloney and stale bread sandwiches. After leaving the caverns, some members went on to visit friends in the area, drove over to Tombstone or made the trip home. For those of us making the Tombstone loop, it was a typical, dusty day in Old Tombstone. We can now all say we ve been there, done that. However, as the afternoon turned into early evening on the drive back home, cell phones began to ring and suddenly dinner plans for the evening were set. It s not often that a driver turns into a breakfast, lunch and dinner event, but it was a great day and the refreshments and dinner with friends really capped off the day. We had great time and hope you did as well. Sincerely, Jim & Esther 8

Application would include: when, where and type of event. It must be made 14 days in advance of event via snail mail or 1 day for . The definition for wheels turning is unclear. It would apply to a pool party but maybe not to the social gathering after the Business Meeting because it is voluntary and not an official part of the meeting.
