Sawyer Chicago, IL Gage Park actually gets its name from the neighborhood's most popular green space. Gage Park (the park) is 69-acres of green glory and boasts nonstop activities for the whole family. When the community of Gage Park was first settled, it was heavily populated by Irish Catholics and Eastern Europeans. During the mid-900s, however, the neighborhood makeup shifted to include a large number of Latinos and Hispanic-Americans. In more recent years, Gage Park has seen an influx of families from all over the city, making it an area steeped in cultural heritage and long-established residential architecture. Sidney Sawyer is a school that prides itself on keeping their students involved and engaged, not just while in school, but after school as well. Sawyer has actually just received a grant through the community school initiative where they will be partnered with the YMCA, and the program will affect 30 students in each grade. A volunteer project at Sawyer can help give students the beautiful space they deserve. Capital One volunteers will be making a huge impact on the school s beautification process through the creation of 3 canvas murals and 25 fleece pillows. Along with these tasks, volunteers will help by building 4 large planter boxes and 2 architectural benches will be beneficial to students, staff, and parents alike. Lastly, Capital One volunteers will paint beautiful playground graphics for children to enjoy and play on during their free time. All of these projects will continue to make Sidney Sawyer Elementary a place that students and staff alike are proud to call home. Laramie Chicago, IL Beaubien Elementary School (originally named Jefferson) has met the Jefferson Park community s educational needs since 877. The original school contained only four large classrooms, but after a fire partially destroyed the school in 905, the current facility was built. At Beaubien, the school motto is One School, One Family". Principal Ludford and her staff work tirelessly to provide a nurturing environment for the students of Jefferson Park. Beaubien emphasizes the belief that a diverse population provides the opportunity for all to learn from each other and grow together. Beaubien has consistently placed among the top schools in Chicago and continues to excel with the help of its dedicated staff and community members. Volunteers from Capital One will have a lasting impact on the community of Jefferson Park and the students, families, and staff at Beaubien through much needed interactive and facility improvements. Volunteers will provide the students of Beaubien with an engaging day full of fun, STEM themed activities through a science fair and Read-With-Me with students. They will also complete 4 tile mosaics and 4 canvas murals to adorn the school hallways. Lastly, they will paint Welcome to Beaubien on plywood panels to be hung up on the fence outside of the school to provide a more welcoming atmosphere for students, staff, and visitors. 5 Community Partner Overview Carl Sandburg Junior High Carl Sandburg Junior High 2600 Martin Lane Rolling Meadows, IL Ensuring Excellence and Equity for All Students Carl Sandburg Junior High School, in partnership with the students, parents, and community, is committed to providing students with a world-class educational experience that maximizes their academic achievement and fosters feelings of confidence, leadership, and self-worth. Students educational and social needs are best addressed by a staff that celebrates ownership and welcomes the partnership of all aspects of the building and its educational program, and whose combined talents and knowledge are committed toward a shared vision of the future. Carl Sandburg Junior High currently has a small and extremely diverse student population. The school pulls in students from several neighboring communities with roughly 50% of their students coming from poverty backgrounds. With 488 students enrolled, the school s staff and leadership strive to prepare students for High School. Capital One volunteers will help provide a more welcoming atmosphere for the students of Carl Sandburg Junior High through a variety of tasks. Volunteers will provide much needed landscaping to the front of the school building by weeding and spreading mulch to the edges of the building along with the school s courtyard area located in the center of the site. They will also construct 3 planter benches, 3 architectural benches, and 4 large planter boxes to be placed outside of the school for student, staff, and visitor use. Along with construction, volunteers will create tile mosaic letters that spell Wildcat Pride to be hung up in the school hallway. Lastly, Capital One volunteers will paint college pennants to be placed in one of the school s hallways to inspire students and provide a more college readiness atmosphere.
