1 COSSA Bulletin August 2016 The President s Corner Hello everyone! I hope that your Summer is shaping up to be a fun one. We have certainly been busy out at the range to provide you with a top notch experience to enhance your Summertime shooting activities. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our wonderful volunteers who work tirelessly to keep the range clean and projects perking right along. There wouldn t be a COSSA Park without our volunteers. Speaking of volunteers, WE NEED YOU! Imagine for a moment that 700 members volunteered only 8 hours a YEAR to help out at the range. That would be 5600 hours of work we could get done together! I can imagine the skills all of you could bring to the table that we could put to good use making COSSA Park great. We are a not for profit organization and have built COSSA Park on donations, grants and volunteer work. There are only a handful of people right now that always step up to help us when new projects or maintenance issues come up. Won t you step up too so we can make COSSA Park GREAT? We NEED HELP. Please consider volunteering so we don t have to raise our fees to cover paid labor. Let s pull together and put in some time so we can ALL be proud of the community of shooters that we are and the range that we ALL work so hard to grow and maintain. Thank you for your time, Sharon Preston President MEMBERSHIP NOTES Initial Enrollment - Your membership becomes effective on the day you complete your orientation and pay the first year dues. Renewal period Your annual renewal period begins the 1 st of the month following your initial enrollment. A renewal notice and invoice via (unless you opted for US mail delivery) will be sent 30 days prior to the expiration date and will reflect any credits for volunteer work or new member references. No reminder notices will be sent. September 8, 2016 the security gate is set to be operational and your member number will become your new access code. If your renewal payment is not received by the expiration date listed on your member card, access to COSSA Park will be denied. Once your membership expires, you will have one month to renew without attending an orientation class. After this grace period, lapsed members along with new members will be required to attend the COSSA Orientation (held once a month) prior to reinstatement. Current membership fees are $85 for an individual and $125 for a family membership. Volunteer work earns credits of $10/hr and enrolling a new member to earns $5 up to the limit of the membership fee. Please direct any questions to Donna Hines, Treasurer at donna@bkptaxservice.com. 2 NEW SECURITY ACCESS GATE GOING IN SERVICE! On September 8 th, 2016, COSSA s solar powered security gate will be placed in service and access to COSSA PARK will require the use of an access code. Use of the combination lock at the COSSA Gate at our west entrance will no longer give members access to the range. Your access code is your current membership ID number. Access to COSSA PARK will be as follows Upon entering, drive up to the key pad and proximity card reader on the left hand side of the west access road. Input your access code/membership ID number or place your access card within 6 of the reader. o The access code is the number on your current membership card. o An access card is available for $40. Contact Brandy at Bookkeeping Tax Services, 568 NE Savannah Dr., Ste. 8, Bend OR 97701; (541) o Wait for the gate to fully open and drive in. o Gate automatically closes behind you. o An instruction sign is posted. Members with Guests MUST BOTH still sign-in at the Kiosk and pay $5 for each Guest! Walk-in Visitors MUST sign-in at the Kiosk and each pay $5! Exiting: the gate automatically opens to allow exiting. Access procedures for Discipline and Special Events will be communicated to their participants by the Discipline or Special Event Coordinators. Current members in good standing will get a reminder of their membership number sent to their address on record in August and well before September 8 th, Members without will get notification via US mail. Placing this gate into service now gives COSSA better control of access to COSSA PARK and who is using our facility. Each access code is unique and linked to a specific membership or an event. The East Gate will still function via the current combination lock code until we can re-align the West Gate to allow full RV access. The current combination will also unlock the 4 fire trailers for use if needed and all other COSSA combination locks. Please direct any questions to Ed Hauswald at kickon@msn.com or (540) COSSA Bulletin 2
3 COSSA FIRE TRAILERS COSSA fire trailers are full of water and operational. The combination locks are the same as the gate code. If you would like information on running the fire trailers contact Bill Lewis and we will set up a class. The instructions for operating the trailers are listed on each trailer. However, before opening the main valves to the tanks, check to see that the drain plug is in on the pump and the control valves on the lines are closed. This looks like we are going to have a hot year so be careful. If anyone sees a problem with the fire trailers contact Bill Lewis. There is additional water for range use in the large silver trailer tank, the two square tanks on the trailer and the green round tank on the spool. JULY WORK PARTY Work party attendance this month was light but we got as much done as we could. The garbage was picked up and the new gate was worked on. Don Thomas and his new helper, Linda Tibbits, sorry Roy, repaired all of our steel and made sure it was ready for shooters. Those in attendance were, Rich Fleming, Doug Lowndes, Charles Brown, Don Thomas, Linda Tibbits, Bill Lewis. No big matches before the next work party on August 17 but this will be the last work party before our Official Grand Opening of our new electric gate. This work party will be dedicated to getting everything done for that event. COSSA LOANER LIBRARY Many new members, probably some old members also, do not know that we have a loaner library for members in the Training Center. We have books on hunting, reloading and general gun books available for members to borrow. We only ask that you bring them back when finished with them and we are always thankful for any books that are donated. The number of volumes in the library was just increased by quite a few by donations made by Chub Eastman. Happy reading. RANGE REMINDER Members are reminded that they are welcome to bring in guests. However, a maximum of 4 guests may be brought in on one day and they must all pay the $5.00 daily fee. Any large group will have to be scheduled through the Coordinator. Any member that is using COSSA Park for classes and is charging for those classes must schedule the time and area before hand and follow the procedure for range rental. Don s new helper, Linda Tibbets AUGUST MEETING SPEAKERS At our General Meeting on August 11, Leland Brown will disucss Non-Lead Hutning Ammo Options. Following his presentation, Phil Henderson will speak on Running for County Commissioner. COSSA Bulletin 3
