2 The Story Behind the Cover Image The cover image represents the rhythm of the working day in the Middle Ages which varied a great deal in accordance with the seasons. It was the parish bell or that of the neighboring monastery that called the artisan to his workshop and the peasant to his field, and the time to ring the Angelus (prayer bell) varied with the length of the natural day. As a rule, people rose and went to bed at the same time as the sun. In winter, therefore, work began at about eight or nine o'clock and finished at five or six. In summer on the other hand, the day began at five in the morning and did not end until seven or eight at night. These are still the regular working hours of peasant families. Be silent and breath in all the goodness that is overlooked by the hatefulness in the world. Take time to have an attitude of gratitude. It is my opinion that if you take the time to look for the good you will find it, then take a moment to grateful for small blessings. Enjoy this month where we take one day off to be thankful for our blessings. I look forward to seeing you all at upcoming events and count myself blessed that we have these events to spend time together. Yours in Service, Story and Song, Lady Scholastica Joycors Chronicler of Bright Hills Thou that has given so much to me, Give one thing more a grateful heart; Not thankful when it pleaseth me, As if thy blessings had spare days; But such a heart, whose pulse may be Thy praise. 3 Greetings onto you, the populace of Bright Hills from Kollack and The summer has become our past and autumn follows closely at her heels. The air is crisp and our thoughts turn to the quiet and peaceful season ahead. Wait, did we say quiet? A bit slower perhaps but there are places to go and projects to complete. Crown Tourney is showing its hot breath upon our necks and we hope to share the news of our kingdom s new heirs. But that is not all that will be going on. His Excellency and I have plans to split our travels with him visiting our Kingdom to the north and participating in a Corn Maze Fighter event hosted by Duke Timothy of Arindale in Lewisburg, PA. I on the other hand, will be traveling to our Cousins to the south to help them celebrate their Baronial Birthday of Dun Carraig in the wonderful site in Nanjemoy, MD. I may even volunteer to be a Fantastical Beast if they should have the need. Both of these events are taking place the 2nd weekend of November. Sadly, we may not be able to make the event that marks the beginning of the holiday season. I speak of none other than Stierbach s Holiday Faire in Manassas, VA. The weekend of the 18th, also in November. We wish safe travels and Happy Holiday shopping to those that attend. Don t forget to show us your treasures so we can live vicariously through you all! From there we will be heading down to Dun Carraig again for Unevent in Waldorf, MD the first weekend in December. I have a feeling we will be seeing some of you there. We look forward to sharing your day. Yours in Joyful Service, Kollack and Rebecca von Zweckel Baron and Baroness of Bright Hills The Yeoman, November Volume 31: Issue 11

9 Lore from the Larder illumination from The Luttrell Psalter The feast at Harvest Wars was a great experience. Never have I ever seen a feast where the majority of dishes came back empty. The following recipes, many inspired by Baroness Tatianna the autocrat and can be adjusted for personal tastes. More recipes to come in upcoming editions of the Yeoman. Your Guild Mistress of Tastiness, Baroness Wynne Pumpkin/Gourd/Squash Soup Ingredients Carrots Butternut Squash Cauliflower- 1 head Acorn Squash Sweet white onions- at least two Butter- 1 stick Cream Half and half salt & pepper 1. Clean all veggies, remove skin from squash. 2. Steam or boil veggies so that they are soft enough to put through a blender of food processor. 3. Mix the mush together with butter, vegetable broth and or half and half. 4. Add salt and pepper to taste. 5. Heat and enjoy with bread, crackers, croutons, what have you. From The Kitchy Kitchen Note: - this was a recipe from "The Joy of Cooking" which I adjusted to my taste, You notice that there are few amounts. It's up to you how much you want to spend as some ingredients can be costly if out of season. The Yeoman, November Volume 31: Issue 11

11 Be Thankful Be thankful that you don t already have everything you desire, If you did, what would there be to look forward to? Be thankful when you don t know something For it gives you the opportunity to learn. Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow. Be thankful for your limitations Because they give you opportunities for improvement. Be thankful for each new challenge Because it will build your strength and character. Be thankful for your mistakes They will teach you valuable lessons. Be thankful when you re tired and weary Because it means you ve made a difference. It is easy to be thankful for the good things. A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks. GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive. Find a way to be thankful for your troubles and they can become your blessings. Author Unknown The Yeoman, November Volume 31: Issue 11

12 New Medieval Books The Silk Road: A New History with Documents by Valerie Hansen The Silk Road is iconic in world history; but what was it, exactly? It conjures up a hazy image of a caravan of camels laden with silk on a dusty desert track, reaching from China to Rome. The reality was different and far more interesting. In The Silk Road: A New History with Documents, Valerie Hansen describes the remarkable archeological finds that revolutionized our understanding of these trade routes. Hansen explores eight sites along the road, from Xi an to Samarkand, where merchants, envoys, pilgrims, and travelers mixed in cosmopolitan communities, tolerant of religions from Buddhism to Zoroastrianism. Oxford University Press ISBN: The Medieval Invention of Travel By Shayne Aaron Legassie Excerpt: Phrase in very broad terms, the central contention of The Medieval Invention of Travel is that scholars have underestimated the significance of travel as both material practice and philosophical abstraction to the development of medieval travel writing. Though this book draws on earlier and later evidence, it focuses primarily on the years During these three centuries, travel writing burgeoned and diversified to a degree that has no historical precedent. This remarkable literary flourishing shaped and was shaped by the period s evolving attitudes toward human mobility. This vital observation has been relegated to the background of previous scholarship, to the detriment of one of the most complex and consequential eras in the history of Western ideas about travel. University of Chicago Press ISBN: Crusading at the Edges of Europe: Denmark and Portugal c.1000-c.1250 by Kurt Villads Jensen Excerpt: The overall thesis is that missionary wars and crusades can explain everything or, put the other way round, that most individuals by far in both Denmark and Portugal during the period from the 11th century onwards were intensely engrossed in God s war against the infidels and organized their societies in order to wage this war. From around 1100, they perceived their missionary wars as a form of crusade and as attempts to imitate the conquest of Jerusalem in To a larger or lesser extent, this tendency continues all through the medieval period and far into the 16th century, but I have chosen to stop this investigation in the middle of the 13th century. At that point the crusades had become well established, and charges in mentality and practice through the following centuries did not lead to anything fundamentally new. 13 Past Knowledge Tips from books of yore How to Avoid Melons, 1565 How to Dress Warmly, c Lyon, Bibliothèque municipale, MS 5128, f. 114v Dress well, wear good shoes, and when you go outside, wear overshoes so that your feet will be warm. And don t make a 'sausage' hat for yourself as some people do, because they are not good. And when you see the other students wearing their caps, you should too, and a fur cap, if necessary. And at night when you study, you should wear a nightcap over the cap and around your cheeks. And when you go to sleep at night, you should wear a white nightcap on your head and covering your cheeks and another colored one on top, since the head should be kept warmer at night than during the day. And during the rainy season, it s good to wear another cap or helmet over your cap so that your head doesn t get wet. Actually, some people wear a helmet over the cap in nice weather, but especially when it s cold, so that they can remove the helmet in the presence of important people without taking off the cap. And take care of your boots and make sure your feet aren t filthy. Letter from a physician in Valencia to his sons studying in Toulouse How to Survive the Winter, c "Winter is damp and cold: we should turn to food. Nourishment should be delicious in the winter. Neither purging nor bloodletting is helpful then, and encounters in bed with your lady friend should be moderate." Daniel of Beccles, Urbanus magnus J.
