1 PICTON PRESS Winter Edition January 2010 OH CHRISTMAS TREE Well here we are at the beginning of another year. I feel more than ever that we need to get the message of Picton s success out to all the community. In this newsletter you will find a number of articles which show just some of the activities which have gone on last year for both the children and adults. Picton Christmas lights have really lit up the Village during the festive season, bringing with them colour and a feeling of fun. Picton has been transformed into a Winter Wonderland. The Christmas spirit continued with the Carol singing, which started off at the Station Pub and then on to both Picton Manor and Picton Grange Farm. The Carol singers then walked around the Village stopping at each house for the children to sing, which everyone enjoyed. Finally it all ended back at the pub. Snowy and icy conditions just made it feel so perfect. Christmas started that night. The carol singing raised 116 for the P.C.R.A. SEASONS GREETINGS On behalf of the Chairman, the Communications group and the Sub committee we would like to send all Picton residents and their families, Seasons Greetings. Have a Healthy and Happy HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE Once again some of the Picton residents welcomed in the New Year at the Station Hotel, a brilliant evening was enjoyed by everyone. Lots of eating, drinking and merriment took place. Inside this issue: Neighbourhood Watch 2 Picton Christmas Fayre 3 Winter Soup Recipe 4 Christmas Quiz 5 Plus many other notices and forthcoming events.
2 We have, over the last year, seen rises in the cost of heating oil and fuel for our vehicles and this has, unfortunately, resulted in an increase in theft from oil storage tanks and motor vehicles. Most oil tanks are easily accessible from the road in order to fill them and some thought should be given to securing them and if possible the garden itself, to make it more difficult for would-be-thieves. Sunday 17th January 2010 at 3.00 p.m. Due in the main to locking petrol caps, thieves no longer siphon motor vehicle fuel but simply punch a hole in the tank, leaving you with no fuel and a costly repair bill. Vehicles are DATES FOR YOUR DIARY The Wind in the Willows In Worsall Village Hall For Tickets apply to WVH advance box office: Helen Craggs: or mandhcraggs@googl .com All adults 5 and Children (under 16) 3 Monday 25th January 2010 Burns night at the Station Hotel, Picton. PICTURE DRAW Mike Farbridge has painted another one of his wonderful pictures, which at the moment is taking pride of place over the fireplace in The Station Hotel, Picton. Mike is a well known local artist who regularly gives his paintings to charity. This year he has kindly donated the picture to the Picton Play Area, anyone wishing to purchase raffle particularly vulnerable if left outside at night in unlit areas. Extra lighting may not save the planet but it might save your property. Have a Happy and Crime Free New Year Jim Ackrill LIBRARY BUS North Yorkshire County Council Library Bus calls at the village every third Tuesday from 1.55 p.m. To 2.10 p.m. The next 6 visits will be: Tuesday 12th January Tuesday 2nd February Tuesday 23rd February Tuesday 16th March Tuesday 6th April Tuesday 27th April The library bus has a large selection of books for your enjoyment. NEW RESIDENTS OF PICTON We have a number of new residents in Picton, who may not be aware of the Picton Parish Plan. The plan summarises the views and aspirations of the residents as to the future development of the village, also meeting the needs of the community now and in the future. A copy of the plan and more information can be found on our website at:: tickets can do so from Jayne or Andy Kitchen. Page 2
3 Inside Sto ryh eadline PICTON CHRISTMAS FAYRE A fabulous fundraising evening was held at Worsall Village Hall on Friday 27th November in aid of Picton Recreation Association. The Christmas Fayre was well supported by Picton Village. Most of the stall holders were local and sold lovely crafts, cards, food and Christmas novelties. Everyone could learn how to make a Christmas door wreath if they wished. Mulled wine and nibbles were kindly donated by Jayne and Andy from the Station Hotel. Well done to the P.C.R.A. Committee for organizing the extravaganza, which raised over 400 for the play area. OIL SYNDICATE The cost of heating oil is rising all the time, we are able to save money on bulk ordering from one supplier. If you would like to be included in the syndicate please contact: Mark Alder: mark@alder.consulting.ltd.uk JOB VACANCIES There are vacancies to join the Picton Recreation Area Committee. Anyone interested in joining this dynamic group, especially if you have fundraising idea s then please contact any member of the committee. Members of the Sub-Committee respond to issues on behalf of the village, matters raised at the Parish Meeting and usually have a specific area of interest, set out in the village plan.
