1 I Like My Beacon Crisp Newsletter #37 November W. Marr Road, Howell, Michigan Rick (517) or Margaret (734) Website: crisppointlighthouse.org Editor: Margaret Warren Fresnel Lens Restoraon Several years ago, CPLHS was able to acquire a fourth order Fresnel lens similar to the one that originally was installed at Crisp Point. This lens is on a long term loan to us from the Sault Historic Sites. Inge Spaulding spent a lot of me arranging for the loan of the lens, which is in poor condion. Recently, Inge contacted Captain Kurt Fosburg of Superior Lighthouse Restoraon LLC about restoring the lens. Captain Kurt agreed to work on the lens over the winter. He will clean it, put it back together and stabilize it. Once it is finished, it will be displayed in our visitor center. This project is being funded by excess money that was donated for the Relight the Light fundraiser. More Erosion Prevenon We recently purchased 32 large concrete blocks, which are 6 feet long, 2 feet high and 2 feet wide. Newberry Redi Mix supplied the blocks and delivered them. They have been placed at the east end of the boardwalk to help slow erosion in that area. You can already see the difference since they were put in place. A lot of new sand has built up over and behind them. Kurt Fosburg and Inge Spaulding with the Fresnel lens.

6 Crisp Point Rocks! The large rocks along the bank have protected the lighthouse for many years. The first ones were placed in 1999, and additional rocks were added in 2003 and These have served us well, but more are needed. The rocks are being undermined by the waves, and the bank on the east end collapsed during a storm in 2009, and was damaged again in At this time, we are asking for your help, in the form of a donation that will help pay for new rocks. For a limited time, donors may receive a silhouette similar to the new sign on the visitor center. Those who donate $60 will receive a round silhouette, 10 inches in diameter, while donors of $100 will receive a 14 inch silhouette. Silhouettes will only be available until December 31, Donations made after that time will not receive a silhouette. The silhouettes are made of laser cut stainless steel. Donations may also be made online with PayPal. Name Address City, State, Zip Phone $100 Donation (receive 14" silhouette) $60 Donation (receive 10" silhouette) $ Donation to rock fundraiser Make checks out to: Crisp Point Light Please mail check & form to: Rick Brockway, 450 W. 7 Meet The Members My Story by Rick Brockway I first found the lighthouse in 1993 while on an off road motorcycle trip to the UP with my son and some of his friends. We were riding any and all trails we could find heading east from the Deer Park area where we were camping. Having always had a thing for lighthouses since my grandparents would take us to the Ludington North Pierhead Lighthouse every summer; we were quite surprised when we came upon this lighthouse out in the middle of nowhere. For the next few years on our trips to the UP to do more riding, I always made it a point to find the lighthouse again. Back in those days we did not have a GPS and there wasn t much for roads. While leaving the lighthouse from one of our trips there, we came upon a lady who had a key to the lighthouse. That lady turned out to be Dee Smith and she invited us to come back to the lighthouse for a tour, which we gladly did. AIer touring the lighthouse, I picked up one of the brochures there and later that year signed up to be a member of the newly formed Crisp Point Light. Other than the first me we found the lighthouse, I think this is my favorite memory of Crisp Point, geqng to climb the tower for the first me. My wife, Terri, and I also ajended the 2 nd annual conference that year and have not missed one since. My worst memory of Crisp Point was in the spring of Terri and I were taking some friends to see the lighthouse. As we walked to the lighthouse we found that the service building had fallen into Lake Superior. At that moment I felt this great sinking feeling in my chest wondering if the lighthouse was going to be next. As the years went on, we were able to make more trips to the UP to go riding. Each me we went, we visited the lighthouse. When we arrived, a guy would be working on the lighthouse, always doing something. One me aier we had our lunch, we went up to see if we could help out. It turned out this guy was Don Ross, who along with his wife Nellie, was trying to save the lighthouse. One me, Don was trying to get the old plywood off the windows so plexiglass could be put in. It was quite a job but we stayed unl it was done. There were a lot of incidents over the next couple of years where Don would be there and we would show up out of the blue and help him out for a while. There was even a me he was on a back trail cuqng up a tree when we showed up and helped get it out of the road. Over me, Don and I became good friends. In June of 2003, aier several years of extensive volunteer work for Crisp Point Lighthouse, Terri and I were awarded lifeme Memberships in the Crisp Point Light. Nellie and Don had dreamed of having a visitor s center at Crisp Point with flush toilets. AIer Don became ill in early 2009, compleng the visitor s center seemed like an impossible task. Since I had just been laid off from my job, I told Don I would tackle the project if he would let me - and let me he did! It took a lot of hard work and three different contractors to get the job done, but by the me the summer conference came in July, we had flush toilets at Crisp Point. In November of 2009, I was appointed the president and treasurer of the historical society and set out to connue the dream that Nellie and Don had of restoring the lighthouse and making Crisp Point Lighthouse a favorite desnaon for tourists in the UP. As I became more involved in the day to day operaons of the historical society, I soon realized just how many great people are members and followers of Crisp Point Lighthouse. Through the use of the internet and we have been able to reach out to members and nonmembers alike. Whenever new projects are announced, the lighthouse world comes alive with generous support. This support makes it possible to complete many projects without taking any state or federal grant money. Some of the last big projects that I would like to see for Crisp Point are: re-installing a working light in the tower (which will happen in 2013), restoring the fourth order Fresnel Lens that we have on a long term loan from the Sault Historical Sites in order to display it in the visitor s center, and repairing the interior of the lighthouse. AIer that, we ll only need to connue the normal upkeep of the buildings and grounds, and the constant erosion control projects. It s truly a heartwarming feeling to know that Don and Nellie are smiling down on Crisp Point Lighthouse. Rick Brockway has been the President of the Crisp Point Light since He is involved in just about everything that happens related to Crisp Point Light. Rick lives in Howell, MI with his wife, Terri.
