3 Queensland Jaguar Driver July / August 2016 Bi-Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of Queensland New Editor Needed Having been your collator of news and information for the past 2 years, it is now time for some new thoughts and ideas in our club magazine. It is important that new arrangements are brought forward from time-to-time and some innovation encouraged. It is noticeable how much Jaguar Clubs in the other states are exploring magazine changes too. Who Wants to be Editor? Come the AGM in November, the present editor is retiring from that role. The post is open to all members of the JDCQ in all regions. Who wants to make their mark on the Queensland Jaguar Driver magazine and can offer their time to make a contribution to this club? There are some hundreds of members of the JDCQ and if 2 or more members offer to fill this role, there will be an election. With the post of editor comes a seat on the Queensland State committee, the JDCQ management committee. It is no longer necessary to be based anywhere in particular to hold a committee position. Indeed, the venue where the committee meet has to be changed before the year s end and so it could move anywhere, in the future, to suit the committee members. The present JDCQ committee includes members in Darling Downs, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast regional registers. The reason I raise this now, some way before the AGM in November, is that I expect that some assistance would be helpful to the new editor in the early days, it certainly was for me. Previous editor Ray Carter and I got together for a couple of editions so that I learnt the methods and details of putting the magazine together, sending it to the printers, the preparation of the web edition etc. So, all those interested, let me know. The last magazine with me as the editor will be the Nov-Dec issue. As with all clubs, the focus and vitality of the club becomes what we, the members, collectively choose to make of it. 5 Jaguar Life President Tony Herald There certainly is plenty happening in the club at the moment both the obvious meetings and events and some considerable behind the scenes activities important for running a better JDCQ. I note that all registers are into the swing of things for the year and we are never short of an event to attend. I manage to get to quite a few in several registers plus sporting and I must say it is a great way to spend some time, good company, good venues and great cars, doesn t get much better. What most members don t see is the behind the scenes action which supports the club and constantly improves it. Following are a few of these which are in the pipeline at the moment. Firstly, the proposal for 2016/2017 fees was put to the members at the JDCQ meeting in May and approved unanimously. This means the following will apply from July1st Standard club fees remain unchanged at $105 per annum Joining fee be increased to $50 Subsidy for the Jaguar Magazine be decreased by $10 which means fees for those who elect to receive this magazine will be $140 per annum. The situation with the JDCQ magazine being two-monthly has never been popular nor helpful to communication and events but it was a necessity due to the significant cost of producing monthly magazines. The committee is currently working on a newsletter to be distributed in the months between the magazine months to bring to you any news and details of events not already covered in the magazine. This newsletter will be for everyone s use so contributions from all registers and event organisers will be welcome. The newsletter is meant to complement the magazine not replace it. The newsletter will only be distributed via . This means that you must keep the club informed of your current address and any changes to that address. We realise that some members may not have and will miss out on receiving the newsletter but we can only adopt a cost effective and administratively simple approach to producing and distributing the newsletter. If you are one of these members I suggest you arrange with a fellow member to have a copy printed off for you as each edition is distributed. The first issue of this newsletter should be distributed in August. A small subcommittee of the JDCQ committee is currently working on a significant revision of the JDCQ constitution. The current constitution was last updated in 2003 and times have significantly changed. There is no provision in the current constitution for conducting club business via electronic means yet most of us use the technology nowadays. Also member preferences have changed and while outings are still popular, meetings don t seem to be. Since we need members approval for certain actions in the club, eg. At AGM s, we need to have a way of having a discussion and gaining this approval without the restriction of having a quorum at a meeting, something we weren t able to achieve at our last JDCQ AGM. We will be basing our revised constitution on the current model Rules from the Queensland Office of Fair Trading. The 2003 constitution was based on the model rules available at that time but much has changed. When we have finalised our work on the new constitution we will post it to the JDCQ website, along with the 2003 version for your reference. We ask that you all review the new constitution and ensure that we haven t missed anything then provide us with feedback. We will be putting a motion to the next AGM in November that we adopt the new constitution (and By-Laws which will also be expanded). Once passed by the membership we then must submit the new constitution to the Office of Fair Trading for their approval before we can operate under the new rules. The National Rally is now fully complete and we have received glowing reports from all clubs. All of the accounts have now been settled and it is pleasing to say that we made a tidy surplus. In 2010 the rally surplus was distributed to registers and the JDCQ account. This was a bonus for registers but it also meant it was a bonus for the tax man because all of these retained earnings were taxable. The JDCQ therefore had a considerable tax bill to pay. This rally we have decided to distribute a significant proportion of the surplus to needy causes in Queensland and support some organisations which supported us so well during the rally, particularly the Post Rally Tour. There will still be a significant amount retained in JDCQ accounts but the amount we disburse to these causes will not be taxable, a good result. We will publish a list of these donations and organisations next magazine once this process is complete. Finally, early notice that the JDCQ AGM will be held on 22nd November at Shannons Offices. We will be discussing and voting on the proposed new constitution but most importantly the normal election of officers will be held. A number of the committee have held their positions for quite a few years now and I know they want, and have earned, a break. This means that we will need to fill those positions with some more willing members. Please give some thought to giving back to the club which provides so many good times for you to enjoy. The club cannot operate without a full committee and in fact cannot legally operate if the key positions are not filled, so we will need some of our members to step up and take over positions which are currently filled by committee members who are intending to retire. Why not you? Please think about it. I am happy to discuss what is involved in any of the positions if you are interested in knowing more, just give me a call or buttonhole me at a gathering somewhere. 8 Sunshine Coast Maleny to Kenilworth 19th June 2016 Well we were warned by the weather bureau that we were in for a wet day, but as we all know it takes a lot to dampen the spirit of Jaguar owners. At the Landsborough meeting point we arrived early in our Prado with friends from WA to an empty carpark, with drizzling rain. Then Joe & Marg Day (Mercedes) arrived, followed by Peter Morgan and Muray (Suburu), Barry & Lin Shaw, (Honda) Nic & Jo-Anne Case, (Isuzu). The rain stopped so everyone emerged to greet each other before heading off to Maleny. As we neared the top of the range, the cloud descended, which along with the rain, made for very cautious driving and little view. Finally our destination, Garden Coffee shop, appeared and we all settled in around a long table for 12. Morning tea ordered and delivered, and we settled in for a good friendly chat in front of a fireplace. With rain still coming down, nobody was rushing to the cars, but once the ladies had browsed through the shop it was off to Kenilworth for lunch. Turning left from the venue we headed off through Maleny via Witta, still raining and along with more thick fog, which cleared once off the mountains. We finally arrived at Kenilworth to the surprise of staff at the hotel, but our table was set and drinks ordered along with our meals. Normally on a Sunday this hotel is a very busy place, sometimes serving up to 130 meals, but not today as there were very few people about. Despite the weather everyone enjoyed the trip including Alan & Jeanette McKenzie from Tasmania in a JAGUAR, joining us at Kenilworth. Bush to Beach Run from Glass House Mountains to Bribie Island Thirteen cars and twenty three members met at Landsborough Museum and all commented that the first indications of winter were starting to be noticed, a brisk breeze was blowing. However, it was really a great day as we made our way to the Glasshouse Cafe where we all [well most of us] indulged ourselves in scones and jam, cakes tea or coffee and enjoyed the peaceful surroundings. From there we travelled to the Glasshouse Mountains Lookout and once again took in that wonderful view. Onward then to Bribie Island, specifically Sandstone Point hotel, which, for most of us was a new experience.the place is huge and adequately caters for hundreds of hungry people on a Sunday afternoon.

11 Gold Coast - Mid-week Run 3rd August 2016 (NOTE: pre booking for this day is imperative) Derek McConnell We leave Arthur Earl Park Nerang at for a BYO morning tea at the Hinterland Regional Park after a drive across the hinterland skyline! Please bring tables and chairs as the ones available are not that large, however there are toilets! From here we shall continue South popping up for skyline views on a route that keeps us in the City of Gold Coast. Our venue for Lunch is University Club Restaurant at Bond University, arriving through Bermuda Street. Besides the excellent food at the Club Restaurant and the ambiance of the Campus, we have arranged a special Corrigan Walk Art Tour after the meal. This is the largest private collection of indigenous art on public display and features the works of our most celebrated and revered indigenous artists. We will have a guide to explain everything. Dr Corrigan AM has put together this collection over the last 20 years, is a local resident, and supporter of the Arts. Do bring friends who might like this little special diversion to our normal Wednesday runs but because we are a group we do need to book and pay for the 2 course meal in advance.the cost of the whole day out is $35.00 a head and payment must be made by the meeting on the 25th July, so put this in your diary now. Additionally we are welcome to visit the latest building on the Campus, the Architectural School which was sponsored by the Chairman of Sunland and designed by a British avant guard architect in his 70 s (An old customer of Derek McConnell ). Derek McConnell Gold Coast - CHAIRMAN S CHALLENGE 2016 Friday 26th to Sunday 28th August The Chairman s Challenge Weekend for 2016 will be held from Friday 26th August to Sunday 28th August and based in Warwick. The weekend will begin with a leisurely drive west through Beaudesert and Boonah to pick up the Cunningham Highway at Aratula and then on to Warwick. The weekend will include staying two nights at the Coachman s Inn Motel in Warwick, enjoying good company with your JDCQ friends, sumptuous meals and going on some interesting excursions. The Sunday return journey is planned to follow the Cedar Route and then intersect with the Cunningham Highway at Gladfield. The distance to Warwick from the Gold Coast is approximately 180 Km. Morning tea will be by the Coomera River in a park, so plan to BYO food and drink and perhaps some chairs. There is a good shelter and toilet at the park (if no one else gets there first)! Our run finishes at the Hilltop Art Gallery on Tambourine for a delicious lunch prepared by a Japanese Chef, and served by a Finish family, see menu below. Again there will be local artwork on display which is constantly changing, and maybe something from our team on each table. 12 Darling Downs Poker Run The Darling Downs Register met at Chalk Drive in Toowoomba for the annual Poker Run, organised this year by Kaye and Barry Challenor. A short run out of town had the Jaguars heading down Flagstone Creek, the scenic way down the hill, en-route to Lilydale. Morning Tea was enjoyed at Heifer Creek. The roads are not that busy just here. Ron and Tara in quarantine at a safe distance. Ron had some dreaded lurgy and chose not to share it around. A brief stop at Greenmount and another chance to improve the poker hand. Final run to lunch at the Bull and Barley, Cambooya. 13 Wide Bay & Burnett Region Including Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Maryborough G,day all. This is no frills newsletter as I have just bought a new computer thing. This one has that infernal Windows10 on it. Once I learn to use this contraption, life will be much easier. Seems that change for the sake of it is necessary as are words in the heading that appear to have no relevance to what you are trying to say or wish to do. There that s my whinge for the day. Sunday the 15th saw us gathering in the Bamboo Land gardens at Torbanlea where we held our meeting and smoko. These gardens are a very restful place to stop a while and contemplate life and there is gift shop there and coffee and cold drinks as well as bamboo plants to inspect and purchase. We have been driving past here for years and never stopped for a look, very interesting. President Arthur gave us a rundown on events at the recent national rally in which he attended some of the events. The rally was a great success and over- subscribed in some categories. Cars attended from all states. Never having seen a F type I was tickled to pass a group of four cars near Bangalow heading north obviously to the rally. Both ragtops and coupe. After smoko we travelled to Toogoom, to Goody s restaurant for lunch. The joint was jumping as I had never seen before as an old resident of the area. The tucker was good and there was a nice atmosphere. Naturally to our old ears the singer was noisy and crook and seemed to be simply making a racket. The next event on our calendar is the cruise up the Mary river on the 25th June. There are already bookings being made for this and it looks to be a fascinating journey. We have been warned to book as soon as possible. Smoko and buffet lunch are included in the $65 per person charge. Secretary Rhonda will forward more details as the event draws near. The next outing is to be meeting and lunch at the Bluewater club at Burrnett heads on July 17th. Detail s on this run to be advised. Until the next meeting, regards, Bill P.S. August 21st Paul and Josie are organizing an observation run. August 3rd is a mid week run, the first held for quite some time. Meet up at the gift shop on Gayndah rd (Gifts from Everywhere). All these events will be advertised in more detail by the social secretary Rhonda as the events draw near. What are all these JDCQ Social Events? Most Regional and Model Register events are social events, sometimes with a theme or visiting places of interest. Social Events often consist of either meeting at a venue for chat, and socialising or meeting at a start point to drive together in a convoy, often with picnics and social opportunities along the way. All the social events are open to all members of JDCQ. The more inter-area and inter-model register participants, the better. The point is that as a Club organised event, these are also ideal times to run concessional registered cars on the road, to and from the event as well as any other car available. It is quite common for some social events to be attended by more non-jaguar than Jaguar cars, the important thing is for all JDCQ members to enjoy socialising together. We know you have an interest in cars and Jaguar or you wouldn t be here. So now, look at the calendar and join in. NOTICE CONCESSIONAL REGISTRATION Members with cars on concessional registrations must be able to prove to police that the vehicle is on public roads for reasons within the approved limits of restricted use. At all times when the vehicle is driven on the road, members must carry Club membership card and current Club magazine, regional newsletter or other written evidence giving particulars of the event being attended. 14 Brisbane Register Reports Angelhurst Village Classic Car Display & Concours An ancient steam tractor engine on display. A novel trophy table, the rear of an ancient Essex. The Angelhurst Village Classic Car Display & Concours is an annual event for invited Car Clubs and is held to raise funds for two nominated charities, Camp Quality and BRAKE. Camp Quality s purpose is to create a better life for every child living with cancer in Australia. BRAKE provides driver awareness training to senior high school students endeavouring to reduce youth death and trauma on our roads. Angelhurst at Tamborine is the home of Tery Hurst who donates the venue and his organisational skills to make this event happen with support from the Jimboomba Rotary Club. Originally scheduled for Sunday 5th June, the event had to be postponed by a week due to the low pressure weather system which moved down the east coast that weekend. This had an impact on the number of attendees but those who did attend had a great time and despite being overcast the weather was kind. The Brisbane Register nominated two cars for Concours judging, Tony Herald s XJS and Lloyd Andersen s SS100. Both won trophies with Tony s XJS judged to be the Car of The Day. The cars were beautifully presented and a credit to the Jaguar marque. This is also the second time a Brisbane Register car has taken the latter award with Allan Old timers in the church. Hilless winning it in 2013 with his E-Type. The competition was stiff as there were many outstanding examples of Ferraris, Rolls Royces, Bentleys, Mercedes, Morgans, Maserati etc present. As well, Terry has a very interesting collection displayed in delightful surroundings. So, with fabulous cars, good coffee, homemade treats and barbecue lunch available what more could one ask for? Oh, of course the company of fellow Club members and enthusiasts and that was in abundance. Julio showed off his recently acquired XK8 convertible and after a test drive two members looked as if they might now be in the market for a similar car. The previous week also had opportunities to use your Jaguar and socialise. Several Brisbane Register members attended the Classic Monocoque lunch at Boonah on Wednesday 8th and the Bribie Island Lunch on Friday 10th. Then there was GEAR on Thursday too so something for everyone. Check the events calendar and there will be something to suit you too. Charlie had arranged secured parking with the management and a roped off area of the car park was reserved for us. Goodonya Charlie! I counted a total of eight MG s and eight Jaguars upon arrival. The members of both Clubs got along well. The food and service was excellent and the President of the MG Club (Bill Hearne) and the JDCQ (Tony Herald) both agreed that joint runs in the future are a good possibility. 4 Charlie was to lead a group from Woodford and I was to lead a group from Strathpine, but due to some unexpected medical complications, Sandy Provis was in hospital and Les Dixon from the MG Club took command of the Woodford group. As for the JDCQ members who met at Pine Rivers Park in Strathpine, we had a small but distinguished convoy of four Jaguars which departed at 10:30am. Thank you Charlie and Sandy for taking the time and effort to organise this run and we re all wishing a speedy recovery for Sandy. Stu Gross Leaving Strathpine, we travelled through Narangba, Morayfield, and Caboolture, before linking up with the Bribie Island/ Caboolture Rd and avoiding the Bruce Hwy for a very pleasant drive. The four of us had no trouble at all keeping sight of one another. We reached our destination right on time (Bribie Island RSL) at 11:55am. 15

16 Sirromet Social Gathering. 22 June Philip & Michelle Dudley with Allan Hilless. The Brisbane Register had a very enjoyable day on Wednesday 22 June despite quite a chilly wind. The high cloud at times parted for bursts of warm sunshine. On the Tuscan Terrace there was sufficient shelter to be found behind some trees with a lovely view over the fields below where a couple of wallabies could be seen feeding on the grasses beside the expansive vineyards which stretched out in many directions. There were 31 in attendance, a very satisfactory turnout for a midweek event. Wendy Goss with Gen Kornfeld and Joy Cooper. Among our attendees were the President and Treasurer of the JDCQ and their partners plus a welcome return of our first Register chairman Allan Hilless who came accompanied by his son in the distinctive F type. There was a very respectable XJC, Tony Brett s lovely old black beast and a very good turnout of more modern sedans from our marque with a few rogue models including my own. Jim Bowden and Lucy Saunders joined in. Lots of chat, busy doing nothing. The company was great, we mixed and mingled, drank wine, very good coffee and fortunately someone else ordered a pizza before me. The The empty pizza board pizzas were humungus and once my wife saw them, she with the sparrow s appetite, convinced me to just order one between us. A great big thank you to the treasurer of the Brisbane Register, Joy Cooper for coming up with the suggestion and investigating its potential. Although we were both listed as the organisers Joy was the driving force behind making it such a success. I am glad someone had a picture or two, my wife for once didn t bring her camera. 18 What is the Regularity Competition? All JDCQ members and invited participants may enter. All Jaguars have an equal chance of doing well. A specially prepared car is not required. It is a chance to drive your Jaguar as you think it should be driven, at a pace that suits you, in your car. Held at Queensland Raceway, Willowbank, there is a compulsory briefing before anyone goes on the track. Then a group of similar Jaguars are invited to drive around the track for some practice laps, each driven at the pace that the driver feels comfortable with. If circuit driving is new to you, go very carefully until familiar with the circuit. The group is enjoying the circuit together, each at their own pace. When all the groups of Jaguars have completed their practice laps, the times are printed out, for each Jaguar. This is so that each driver can see what lap time they were setting. From this, each driver then nominates a lap time that they think they can consistently repeat in lapping the circuit. It does not have to be a fast time, just a time you are comfortable with, a time you can circulate at, regularly. Once again, groups of similar Jaguars drive around the circuit, each at their own pace, and the competition is to see who can drive around the circuit, lapping regularly at a time closest to their nominated time. It is not the fastest car that wins, it is often one of the slower cars. The winner is the car and driver who lap the circuit most consistently at their nominated time. It is also a great day to see all the Jaguars being driven as each driver wants to, without all the highway restrictions Get your entry in and have some fun. 18

The best laid plans of mice and men by Tony Nelson Robert Burns wrote that quote. I played it out the morning of Sunday 22nd May, 2016, when I planned, with the assistance of Mark Jones, we would gather the 38 Jaguars and 53 combined participants of JDCQ and CJEC for Mac s Bridge - Sports & Classic Car Festival. Mark and I had previously checked out the Sleeman Sports Centre at Chandler on a Sunday morning at the time we intended to meet. We found it vacant and thus ideal as an area to gather members cars. We would sort out the Jaguars by year of manufacture, before we arrived at the new venue, the nearby Belmont Rifle range. All members were instructed to arrive at the centre before 7.30am, so we could leave at 8am. Mark and I arrived at 7am on the event day, to find security guards at the gate and the centre closed for a triathlon and trail bike spectacular! What to do? Mark stayed to redirect members to the Rifle Range and I led the arriving cars to the event. Fortunately, the day before, Mark and I had visited the new display site. I sent out an advising members of the 4 display rows and which row they would display and many members arrived with a copy of this list. I had also printed off some spare copies and with the assistance of Lloyd Andersen, Tony Herald, Brian McKenzie and the exceptional Beautifully presented Morris Minor. 21 The Alfa Romeo Montreal, an Italian supercar of the 70s. Morgan 3 wheeler. These were quick and sporty back in their day. Ford s Mustang. The pony car lives on. memory of Lorraine Andersen, who announced to me arriving cars and owner s names, even if the vehicle had recently changed owners, we were able to direct Jaguars to their display positions. Once members were parked, they also assisted in the parking of others. Other non club Jaguars arrived and we ended up with 47 Jaguars from 1936 to 2016 exhibited. It was a great display and JDCQ member Colin Galley added to the spectacular with a display of cars from his collection. Mick McAuliffe travelled the most kilometres, arriving in his wonderfully presented XJS Grand Tourer from Kingaroy. The youngest car was a no contest event for Peter Lehrke in his 3 week old F-Type, which picked up the best modern sports car gong. When you are fortunate to own many Jaguars, Lloyd Andersen allowed me to choose from his collection for him to display his 1936 SS100. The site the Triumph Club gave us met all the specifications I had requested, allowing us 4 metres width for each car space, so we did not trade paint. We were close to all facilities and close to an exit so we could leave when we wished to do so. I did leave before the awards as I also had a family event happening that day. If I am around next year, we will just go directly to the venue and with the assistance of club members, again park the Jaguars in year of manufacture. Thanks so much to members who registered for this event, as it allowed me to relay to Triumph fairly accurate expected attending numbers. 22 JAGUAR XJC ELECTRIC WINDOWS With Ian McKinney For some time now the electric window of my driver s side seemed to jump about an inch either up or down while operating the window. Upon removal of the door trim to investigate what would be the possible cause, everything appeared to operate, but still with the dropping of the glass. The choice now was do I remove the glass and its frame and winder mechanism. As somebody once said if it aren t broke don t fix it. So I put some grease on the runners and reassembled the door trim etc, and thought it would be a Kodak issue it will have to develop. Well towards the end of the Post Rally tour it developed, the window went up and stayed up. Now what could it be. Checked the fuses, all good, sat in the driver s seat with doors closed and tried the switches to listen for any noise from the internals of the door. There was a very slight wiry noise, so it sounded like the power was getting to the window winder motor. Once back home it was time to tackle the window, this time all the internals were removed, not simple job but eventually everything was out. The roller on the window mechanism arm was not nice and round, had quite a few flat spots, but it did turn. Then checked the winder with the power connected to see what happened, all went well until it got to the end of its cycle, then you could see that all was not as it should be. The mechanism gave clunk, with certain parts touching when they should not have been touching causing the mechanism to lock up. So on inspection there was a small rivet.250 dia which after 40 years had decided it was time to fail. The difficult part now was fixing it. The rivet was one of three which held plates together in a triangle. The rivet which failed had signs of the peening not being done correctly and slowly worked loose, causing one of the holes to elongate. Obviously this was the cause of the problem. Trying to purchase a new rivet was difficult as nobody could supply, plus if I was to total dismantle the triangle I needed 3 rivets. They could be made and it would not have been the difficult, but I was told about a company in Brisbane called Power Window. This company only does window winders both electric and mechanical. They suggested having a look at my failed mechanism to see if they could supply rivets, with the idea of keeping the car as original as possible. Salvo the owner took a look and he mentioned that Land Rover has a similar looking mechanism but the area that failed on mine, was welded on the Land Rover. Thought about this for a while and could not see any reason for us not to do the same, so weld we did. Once completed we tested it with some power and the whole mechanism worked perfectly. 26 Mk 2 Burblings July - August With Robin Todd Firstly, I want to most emphatically deny that I played any part in the computer malfunctions of our esteemed JDCQ Historian, Ray Carter. Even though, in some cases, the expectation is that I m some sort of wizard, I did not put a hex on Ray s machinery, even if I could, Ray would not have been the target, there are far more dislikeable muggles about the place. Ray actually agreed to come to one of our Country Luncheons although, I note, that he decided to go overseas this time rather than joining us, however we do exchange some quite amusing s and I expect that to continue when he un-hexes his electronic machinery. Speaking of putting a hex on machinery. The other day we, my dearly beloved and I, were sitting comfortably on the couch reading whilst the TV talked mindlessly to itself [it was tuned into the ABC so it was most appropriate for everybody that nobody was listening as the ABC Journalists only like the sound of their own voice and pay no attention to the accuracy of their words], when my Valerie said I haven t heard the fridge running much today do you think that there is something wrong. Aha, I thought, another hint of some sort of hex, but being extremely factual and not given to wildly inaccurate statements, I suggested that as it was past mid-day and the outside temperature had not yet reached 9 degrees the fridge maybe didn t need to operate very often. That night I was talking to my son [on the phone, we don t communicate using mystical powers] he said how cold he was to which I said I m wearing a thermal singlet under a t-shirt under an flannelette shirt under a tracky top under a woolly jumper to which he replied with the utmost sympathy why don t you turn on the air-conditioning Young people are like that aren t they, they oversimplify the massive problems and crises that we more mature people have to deal with on a day to day basis. That s enough rubbish talk, but speaking of cold, do you realise that the winter solstice has just past and so has the date for THE JDCQ event of the year, the Jolley s Lookout Breakfast. It was without a doubt the jewel in the crown of JDCQ Events as far as we were concerned. We used to go up early, windows open especially the rear quarters, heater fully on and the Mk2 sounding magnificent with the exhaust echoing off the earth banks in the still air of a cold morning. After claiming as many of the B- B-Q s as possible, Richard Andrews used to arrive early with more wood to help fire up the cooking plates. Then sit and listen to the glorious growl as mobs, herds, Bob McKay & Ian Mewett with their Mk 2s flocks, of Jaguars climb the mountain from all parts of Brisbane, the Clive Arnold E-Type Register Early Morning Run, the Darling Downs Register, The Sunshine Coast Register as well as the Gold Coast Register, all of whom would have had a very early start indeed. The car park was such a sight full to the brim with gleaming Jaguars. After breakfast and the group started to dwindle back home or to some other event the stalwarts used to Max Parnell s Mk 1 stay on to solve the problems of the world and enjoy a leisurely lunch. Our favourite event, but I guess the members have aged a bit and the cold seems colder. What ever, it is a great memory Speaking of memories we wandered out to the HRCCQ Autumn Historics back in May. What a wonderful Motor Race Meeting it turned out to be. As usual the organisation by our own John T was spot on. How he manages to be the organiser and run a car in the competition is beyond me. I get completely exhausted just watching him rush about. The great treat was the Mk2s of Bob McKay and Ian Mewett racing in the Group Nb Category and looking and sounding brilliant. Our regular Compact Jaguar representative Maximilian Parnelli was there once again reminding us once again just how good a Mk1 can go and sound. Max also explained the complex issue of how his car got to have a much wider rear track. No it wasn t the fitting of a Mk2 rear end, no it wasn t offset rear wheels as per the early Hawthorn etc Mk1s. It was simply the fitment of spacers. Graham Hein was also having a run in his trusty 420 as was Murray Scoble in his exceptionally quick XJ6 S1 All together a fine selection of Jaguars [especially for the fans of the early Compacts]. 27 Type and put it away for safe keeping and has bought himself a Morris Mini Cooper S to play with. Goes really well too and he seems to have settled in very quickly. John T has also changed cars, although he says the MK VII has not been pensioned off just yet, merely resting. His new toy is a BMW Probably one of the best cars you could choose to go Group N [Historic Touring Cars] racing as they are light, have plenty of power, brilliant handling and brakes and would probably about as far away from the Mk VII to drive as you can get. He had a few teething problems but should have an absolute ball driving the thing. Late in the day we were standing in the pits with Monica T, Graham and Bronwin H, Peter W and having a chat while we watched John T dash from Racing Driver to Race Meeting Organiser with the speed that would make Superman look tardy. It was a nice peaceful time for the rest of us, the 420 was finished for the day and being loaded to drive back home. That also takes one back in time to the days when the young chargers used to drive to Strathpine, paint on a number and cover the number plates if the car was still on HP, race, then load up and go home ready to drive the self same car to work the next day. That night I was doing something or other with my book of JDCQ Classic Monocoque Register Events and associated notes. On the cover I have a photo taken at Brisbane City Jaguar on the opening of the trophy cabinet. Bill Pitt [our Patron was there and except for Brian Rowse and Peter Tett the gathering in the pits at Morgan Park was in effect a reunion of the original members of the now defunct JDCQ Past Presidents Association. After years on the ACJC being subjected to the superiority of our good friends from south of the border as they spoke at great length about the massive profits generated by their clubs when they hosted the National Rally. $15,000 - $20,000 seemed to be the average claim although I never got to see the figures only to hear the claims. Our reports generated snide and or patronising remarks but that is to be expected. Can t wait to see how we got on this year. 28 The David Hack Event With Paul Zealand In the end I was the only JDCQ member attending, and whilst it was raining in Brisbane, the sun shone and it was dry in Toowoomba. My series 3 E type made it there fine, despite my worries as it has not done many miles in the last decade, and I had replaced the opus electronic ignition with a REOPUS kit the night before. It certainly seemed to run more smoothly (maybe my imagination), and the car drew a bit of attention being the only Etype. Many other Marques were there in force. I was placed in a prime spot in front of the hanger with various vintage bikes, cars, planes inside. This is an annual event and a good sort of occasion for those members who enjoy a variety of technology with plenty of folk wanting to share their insights and stories. I will be moving (my family and the E type) to Nelson, New Zealand to live in June, and have already bought a 3.8 Mk2 there to restore in the free time I imagine I might have in the future. So I may not be seen on any more JDCQ outings, but am already connected to the Jaguar club in Nelson which is very active, and anyone traveling down under... Be sure to contact the club there for some like minded folk. The aim of this brief article is to describe the procedure for your first log on. After having set up your password you will be able to: 1. Access the Library pages and lodge a lend request for a book or a DVD 2. Post comments and enter discussions on the Forum pages. 3. Purchase Regalia items from the shop-front. To make use of these features you will need to login to the website as certain areas are restricted to financial members of the Jaguar Drivers Club of Queensland. To Login: Click on the Login tab on the top menu bar. This will take you to the Login screen where you will find a Password Notice with details for your first login. Click on Forgot Login? This will take you to the Lost your Username or your Password? page. Tick the Forgot Your Password? box. An Address box now appears below. Fill in your address as registered with the JDCQ. Click on Send Username. An will then be sent with a link to create your password. From then on you will be able to login with your membership number and the new password you created. 29 JDCQ Treasurer s Report With Tony Brett With the time commitment of National Rally in Caloundra becoming a memory, there has been some time to create a long overdue report regarding the financial status of the club itself. As can be seen from the figures the liquidity of the club is sound, largely because the National Rally produced a surplus, allowing the funds advanced to be repaid in full & this being the first full year of bi monthly magazines. Whilst the savings resulting from bi monthly magazines have contributed to the position, the funds available are insufficient to sustain a return to monthly magazines long term. The report shows revenue from Social & Sporting Functions. This revenue did not actually occur in May, and relates to accrual journals I made at the end of last financial year for prepayments relating to the current financial year. JDCQ is a not for profit organisation and exists to provide benefits to its members, further awareness of the marque, and if possible provide a return to the community in general. With these objectives in mind, the JDCQ Executive, in consultation with the National Rally Committee has decided to distribute a large proportion of rally surplus to charities, both within the region visited by the rally, and to areas of regional Queensland in need of assistance. This action will give back to the communities that supported the rally, and also provide the club with a useful tax break for the future. The details of the distribution will be made at an appropriate time, subsequent to finalisation. Tony Brett 29

30 Nuts & Bolts With Bill McMonagle Wheel Nuts A couple of weeks ago I was driving very slowly across the tarmac at Redcliffe Aerodrome in my Mitsubishi Colt when I noticed a clicking sound coming from the right rear wheel. Pulling up at my aircraft hangar I investigated and found that a U shaped piece of metal was imbedded in the tread. I removed the offending piece of metal which did not appear to be deep enough to go right through the tread and checked by the spit method that no air appeared to be coming out of the holes. However next morning at home the tyre was definitely very low and I quickly re- inflated it from my compressor and moved the car into the shed where I have floor jacks and impact wrenches which makes it a simple matter to change a wheel. I jacked the car and applied my air driven impact wrench to undo the wheel nuts. The wrench wouldn t shift the nuts! Now it is only a Supercheap wrench but it has never previously failed to undo a wheel nut. So I reverted to a manual socket and standard bar but got nowhere. In the end I used a four foot long (metric 1.25 metre) bar over the end of a standard ½ inch T bar and finally got the nuts to come loose after much grunting and exertion. I reckon that the torque on those nuts to be in the order of 150 to 200 foot pounds. Now I have never had these rear wheels off this car and have no recollection of having new tyres put on the rear but somewhere, sometime, someone has put these wheel nuts on, I suspect with a torque wrench at maximum setting. If I had this flat tyre alongside the road it would have been impossible to change the wheel with a standard tool kit. I also found that the rear wheel nuts on the left hand side were the same so they got backed off and re-torqued to a sensible setting. The front wheel nuts were OK as I had only fitted a new set of brake pads a few weeks ago and a check on them showed they were still the same. I suggest that you check your wheel nuts tension by simply attempting to undo one nut on each wheel. No you don t have to jack the car as the other 3 or 4 nuts will hold the wheel OK. If you can t undo the nut then action is required to get sufficient torque onto the nut as I did to loosen it. I went to my local tyre place to have the puncture repaired and I was running on one of those dinky spare tyres which are limited to 80Ks. They not only repaired the puncture but offered to fit the tyre back on the car. When they were doing this I noticed that they used an impact wrench on a low setting and then used a torque wrench to finish off the nuts tightness. However I was surprised to find that they used a 90 foot pound setting. That is verging on the limit of a human beings ability to undo a wheel nut with a typical car tool kit. Most sedan car wheel studs are around the 12 to 15 mm or 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch diameter. My engineering books quote typical torque settings for these sizes at around 60 to 70 foot pounds. In fact we recently had the propeller off and back on my Piper Cherokee which is held on by six ½ National Fine bolts and the manufacturer s instructions are to torque the bolts to 60 foot pounds It was suggested that I check the vehicle owner s manual for a torque setting but there was no guidance there. In the meantime, I suggest you check this wheel nut business out on your own car particularly if you are travelling any distance away from urban areas where roadside assistance and succour is limited or problematic. Batteries Only one club member responded to my invitation for information on battery life. He lives in the country and swears by one particular brand of battery which he uses in his Jags and farm utes etc. and regularly sees 7 to 8 years service out of a battery. The one important point that he and I both follow is that the vehicle battery is disconnected when not in use. MK2 Rear window chrome When I bought this MK2 2.4 the rear window was a shambles. The glass was OK but the rubber seal was a mess and there was no chrome fitted to the seal. However the car did come with two complete sets of rear window chrome surrounds. Earlier this year, I cut the old seal out and removed the glass which cleaned up OK. I had a new seal ready to go and with the assistance of a motoring friend (not in the JDCQ) it was easily fitted. Now, says I, we ll just fit the chrome surround. HA!! There was no way that that chrome would fit the rear window. These old chrome surrounds had been ripped out, twisted and bent. The problem is that they are originally glued onto the rubber and persons trying to remove the chrome invariably distort these mouldings which are chrome plating over soft brass. Oh well we ll have a look at getting new mouldings and an enquiry from English sources revealed they were available for the mere sum 30

31 of English pounds for each half. That translates to around 348 pounds for both sides which is close enough to $700 Australian and that is before postage! Not a real good option. Back to the original mouldings and lets see if they can be repaired. Well the answer is yes but you will need the patience of the biblical Job to achieve results. These mouldings must lie flat onto the rubber and follow the curves around the end of the glass exactly. I found that an old pair of cloth gardening gloves which allowed me to apply pressure while stroking the bent areas back into shape seemed to be the answer. However it took over 4 hours of effort spent over a number of days to get to a final result. I would go at it for ½ an hour or so and give up in frustration and return the next day to have another go. They are finally fitted and glued back into place but if somebody asks me to do another set of MK2 rear window mouldings I will justifiably decline on the grounds of excessive mental stress. Ron s XJS, looking spectacular with the carburettor set-up on the V12, had fuel pump problems. My Racing Red XJS was grounded by the organisers for being too noisy. There are special noise restrictions in place at Lakeside and though my car passes noise tests for CAMS racing events etc. it would not be any good for sneaking up on somebody and Lakeside requires it to be quieter. We re working on this as Lakeside is a great circuit and we hope to run there again as well as stay within the specification for racing. 33

34 Jaguar MkII Immitation Quirky Japanese firm Mitsuoka has shown off the latest version of its Viewt microcar ahead of its official launch at this week s Tokyo motor show. The Mitsuoka Viewt is underpinned by a Nissan Micra, with the shell of a Jaguar MKII on top. The model first went on sale in Japan in January 1993, before being replaced by a second-generation model in The latest model has been updated to keep pace with Japan s safety and crash test regulations. The model has three engine options a 1.2-litre, a 1.4-litre and a 1.5-litre, all petrol and putting out between 90 and 109bhp. Inside, the Micra s cabin remains largely untouched, aside from some new trim, seat coverings and badging. Pricing will be confirmed at the Tokyo show, which starts tomorrow As seen by Tony Nelson on his trip to Japan. 34

36 Jaguar F-Pace at Goodwood Festival of Speed With Ayush Arya of Newsdog What is the best way of showcasing the capabilities of an SUV? Drive it up a steep incline? Make it wade through a swampy area with deep water gorges? Take it out on the highway along with a family of a weekend trip and check if it can accommodate them and their luggage happily? Well, for Jaguar, all these ideas are too old school. What they have done to showcase their new family SUV, the F- Pace, is to drive it around the famous Goodwood hill climb course on two wheels. Yes, you heard it right, on two wheels. With legendary stunt driver Terry Grant at the wheel and professional freestyle motorbike rider Lee Bowers as his co-pilot, the F-Pace on two-wheels was quite a spectacle for the crowds in attendance at the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed. If this was not all, Lee Bowers climbed out of the vehicle and performed various stunts standing on the side of the car and saluted as SUV drove past the viewers gathered at the most celebrated automobile garden party in the world. The F-Pace which was used to perform this extreme stunt has been completely stripped down from the inside of its upholstery and fitted with racing seats and an anti-roll cage for the protection of its occupants. It is however not the first time that Jaguar has done something this outrageous with the F-Pace. The same vehicle was used to set the Guiness World Record for the largest loop-the-loop last year, soon after the vehicle was launched by the British sports car marquee. The Jaguar F-PACE is Jaguar s first performance crossover and its lightweight body structure comprises 80 per cent Aluminum making the SUV quite fast and agile at the same time. 36
