3 Queensland Jaguar Driver November/December 2016 Bi-Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of Queensland Farewell from this editor and a big welcome to the New Editor, it is just that we don t yet know who that might be. There has not been any rush of members wishing to take over the production of this magazine, none, not one, zilch. There are about 800 or so members of this club, with different interests within the Jaguar enthusiasts as a whole. Some socially focused, some mechanical, some purists, some motor-sport, all keen on the wonderful and individualistic Jaguar cars. Many members tell me that they cherish the magazine as an important part of the Club and now one (or two) of those members must put up their hand as editor. This magazine does not appear by magic, someone has to put it together if it is to continue. Many thanks to the many contributors both regular and occasional that make this magazine relevant and interesting to the membership. We will continue to see you all out there, at casual, social and motor sport events, Jaguar willing. Racing red XJS had a trouble free run at Queensland Raceway in the JDCQ Regularity Track Day. All 12 cylinders joined in all the time. We had the actioncam running for most of the event but didn t notice that the mounting was a bit loose. The pictures are a bit wobbly but the sound track is good with the V12 on full song at last. I again failed to do well, the whole competition is based on nominating a time for each lap and repeatedly matching it. Knowing the mixture of Jaguars and drivers on the circuit, I allowed a margin for encountering traffic but then when the track was clear I forgot and went too fast, again, picking up penalty points. But the V12 was running well and it was such a joy to hear it happy that it was a wonderful day on the circuit just for fun. Did you know that when Jaguar built the V12 engine, they fitted a temperature sensor where the bottom hose from the radiator joins the engine. There is a small aluminium casting making the connection which has a 7/8 or so (22mm) hole in it. Into this hole is pushed a simple rubber collar and the temperature sensor housing is just pushed into that. No flanges, rebates or locators, just bunged in the hole and that s holding the coolant in, pressurised. Every other V12 must have this bung and it must be OK but, when I investigated a small coolant weep, mine just pulled out and hey-presto, one big puddle on the floor. Needless to say, we ve made a modification involving a mig gun and this won t be happening again. 5 Jaguar Life President Tony Herald Much has happened since the last magazine, I guess that is to be expected with two monthly magazines, but it does prompt reflection on the level of activity across the club and the opportunities for enjoying our cars and the company of our fellow members. Of course, all of the registers have held activities as they generally do each month and these are generally well attended because they are both local and consist of tighter social groups. Great opportunities for getting together with our club friends. Then there are the bigger gatherings where we combine with other clubs and enjoy a variety of beautifully presented cars and the opportunity to meet and chat with many fellow enthusiasts. This year we have had a number of such opportunities, all great events well attended. Our National Rally in April was the first and what a huge event that was. This was followed by Macleans Bridge in May, well organised and well attended. As mentioned last month this was followed by the Peaks Crossing gathering at the Summerson s property where over 200 cars were displayed in a relaxed and friendly setting, a great success. Shortly after that day we had the JDCQ Display Day at the All British Day, which, despite a week s postponement due to wet weather, was another well attended day offering a huge variety of classic cars to peruse and a pleasant social atmosphere. This was very shortly after followed by the Noosa Beach Classic Car Show, always a tremendous display which certainly didn t disappoint this year. Not too well patronised by the JDCQ members as last year but still a good display of Jaguars and many other makes all in pristine condition. I hope you managed to get to some of these events, we certainly aren t starved for excellent opportunities to enjoy these grand displays of the classics we are so keen on. Looking ahead we are well into the end of year season and Xmas functions are not far away, even closer by the time you read this magazine. These too offer a really great opportunity to reflect on the year that was, the friendships that we have enjoyed throughout the year and celebrate that in grand fashion. So, make sure you book into your local register Xmas function and enjoy the fun, because they always are. It is also the time when we award our achievers and contributors in a small way. This year, being a year when we conducted the National Rally, we have more than the normal number of such contributors and hopefully we can acknowledge all those who gave so much of their time and energy to that event and all of the others throughout the year for the benefit of our members across Queensland. Awards are presented at the various Xmas functions, yet another reason to get along to your regions party. The other end of year activity, and I covered it comprehensively in my last report, is the Annual General Meeting of the JDCQ. To be held on the 22nd November at Shannons. We have to elect a new committee, all positions are declared vacant, and we have to vote on accepting a new JDCQ constitution and by-laws, both extremely important for the future of the club. At this stage (24th October as I write this) we have a number of nominations for committee positions from serving committee members who are happy to continue in their roles but no other nominations. We know that a number of key committee members will be standing down after several years of service, these include President, Secretary, Treasurer, Editor, Sporting Coordinator, and without filling most of these roles the club cannot function. So, come along on the 22nd, have your say and nominate someone, perhaps yourself, for one of the key committee positions, it is a great opportunity to make your contribution to the club which delivers so many great experiences for its members. While I will cover it in my annual report which will be published in the next magazine I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of committee members, both JDCQ and regional registers, throughout the year and sincerely thank them for helping to deliver a year full of wonderful events and activities enjoyed by so many of us. Great work THANK YOU. That s it from me for this time and for the year. If I don t catch up with you at one of the Xmas functions Karen and I wish you and your families a very merry festive season and a wonderful year in Tony Herald Queensland Jaguar Driver November - December 2016 Web Edition. 5

12 Jaguar Drivers Club Queensland Annual Display Day All British Day The Lite Version With Tony Herald Photos from Miss McKenzie, Lloyd Anderson, Terry Whitehouse and Tony Herald. This year s All British Day and JDCQ annual Display Day had a rocky start. Originally scheduled for 18th September it was postponed a few days before the event due to the already soft condition of the grounds, due to heavy rain, and the forecast of more rain on Sunday 18th. Disappointing but as it turned out, it was the right call, Sunday 18th was wet. The event was therefore postponed to Sunday 25th September and after a couple of very minor sprinkles very early in the morning the day turned out to be very pleasant and fine, so again, a good call. Unfortunately, the postponement meant that many who intended to attend had other arrangements in place for the 25th. This had a noticeable effect on attendance and numbers were down across the whole display. However, there were still quite reasonable numbers and a great cross section of all British marques to wonder around and enjoy, with the very innovative displays by some of the clubs. The JDCQ display had approximately (I didn t get time to do a count) 53 Jaguars and Daimlers in our very generous area on the lower sports fields. It was an interesting mix of models in that there was a strong showing of Mk 2 s and E Types but no XFs, XK8 s, X150 s and only one classic XK (140 I think). Surprising three replica D Types attended, two were replicas of the Le Mans D Types with the third being a very nice XKSS replica, a great addition to the overall display. This year we celebrated two significant anniversaries, the 80th anniversary of the Jaguar SS100 and the 50th anniversary of the 420 Jaguar. Lloyd Anderson brought his silver SS100 (replica) along for the occasion and Ben Hutchins brought Col Galley s BRG SS100 (recreation). This provided a wonderful display to honour this significant milestone in the history of one of the best looking sports cars in the Jaguar stable. Tony Brett brought his delightful black 420 Jaguar for the 50th anniversary display, it too looked very special. (See front cover). It was good to see both the Chair of the Gold Coast Register, Terry Cooper in his lovely X350 and Chair of the Sunshine Coast Register, Lindsay price in his very special Daimler Straight Eight, supporting the event, thanks guys. LLoyd Anderson s replica and Col Galley s recreation.

13 3 Replica D - Types, stunning. John Martin s superb 1955 D - Type replica. The day went very well and was quite relaxed with the only judging being by members themselves for the JDCQ People s Choice award. This was finalised by around 1.30pm and the voting was very close between the spectacular D Type replica of John Martin and the beautifully restored 1939 SS Drop Head Coupe of Sue and Rod Greasley. The 1939 SS won on the day and the Shannons People s Choice Trophy for 2016 was accepted by a delighted Sue Greasley, Rod preferring to stay in the background. Incidentally John Martin received the All British Day owners award for his wonderful D Type. Congratulations to our deserving winners. By 2pm everyone was heading home after a very satisfying day and the JDCQ gear was all packed and loaded into the trailer for next time. Many thanks to my helpers on the day: George, who was there with his MkV when I arrived at 7.15am, didn t belong to any club and who happily helped me mark all of the car positions with string line and turf paint, Brian McKenzie who helped with the remaining setup and then marshalling cars to their allotted spots, Barry and Joy Cooper and Clive Arnold for marshalling cars to their allotted spots, Tony Brett for setting up the tents and tables for us all to use and Ray Hodges for bringing library material along and manning the club tent for most of the day. A great team effort, thanks everyone. Let s hope next year the weather is kinder to us and we see a normal number of our pride and Joys. It certainly is a day not to be missed. Classic S- Type. 14 Jaguar Drivers Club Queensland Track Day A fun day of motor-sport. Julio Machado, Ray Hodges, Tony Brett and Barry Cooper all very happy and enjoying their Jaguars. Willowbank Regularity - 30th September 2016 With Tony Brett Photos from Merv Jackson, Keiran Lillis, Ross Johnson, Phillip Strong, Sandra Hall & Helen The last track day for 2016 was run at Willowbank on 30th September A strong westerly, at times chilly, gusted across the circuit, and could be felt buffeting the cars, especially on the main and back straights. 10 JDCQ cars were joined by a further 7 infidels and all enjoyed the day and the camaraderie. Springwood Jaguar attended with Max from their spares department, in a lovely cherry red F Pace. He brought an extensive array of regalia, which raised interest, and although there were some offers made for the F Pace, none were of sufficient value to cause a possible change of ownership! A second practise session was held, after a timing glitch in the first. Times were nominated and we settled into the first of 4 timed runs. The full timings are available on the web under URL: circuit racing, and then Jaguar Drivers Club Regularity for 30/09/2016. Perry Rolton s XJS ran reliably and used all of its 12 cylinders all day, which left him rather pleased and somewhat relieved. After a short hissy fit cause by fouled plugs, John Tupicoff s MKVII sounded magnificent and ran consistently all day. The Porsches of Richard Andrews and Allan Carsledine looked the part and Rod Greasley s (XKR-R) enjoyed open top laps, and even had the opportunity to give Merv Jackson the chance to test his nerves in a passenger run at days end. Both Barry Cooper (E Type) and Tony Brett (XJ6) had sprinkled far too much sugar over their weeties, and traded personal best lap times for a while, with both ending in the 1:19 s, which did little to help their overall result in the regularity competition, but left them with big smiles. Ray Hodges (Jaguar XJ Super V8) attached himself to the sugar fueled duo and learned a whole new set of cornering lines, and finished the day with a wide grin. Julio Machado (XK8) made a seamless transition from 4 doors to 2, enjoying the open top in his new purple streak XK8. Early on we lost Glen Kieseker (Holden HZ ute V8), as the gearbox refused to select 3rd & 4th gears. Hope that is not an expensive repair. In the mean time Graham Hien (420), Ross Johnson (Mini Cooper), John Tupicoff (MKVII) and Phillip Strong (Triumph TR4) circulated reliably and regularly, and this tended to show in the final results. So after a wind swept 3hours, we came out with the results as presented below. The small number of competitors made for a more relaxing day, and gave each of us more track space than normal, which added to the enjoyment. My thanks to the crew at QR, and to all those who attended and made the day so memorable. Some Jaguar motor-sport regulars were there, Graham Hein in the Jaguar 420, John Tupicoff in the Mark 7 and my Racing Red XJS Queensland Jaguar Driver November - December 2016 Web Edition 14

17 Treasurer s Report with Treasurer Tony Brett: The Financial Statements for the JDCQ have been prepared and have been with the Auditor for a fortnight as I write. I am hopeful that an audited set of accounts will be presented at the AGM in November. I will report fully, once these are complete. In the mean time I can say the club is in an excellent condition financially, and it was gratifying to note how much each of the registers has given back to the members throughout the year. The club exists for the betterment of its members, and during 2015/2016 that aim has certainly be achieved. The National Rally in Caloundra dominated our activities. The club produced a most memorable and quality event, and I feel gained the maximum from each dollar spent. Although the event was run on a tight budget, there was no evidence of cost cutting in the quality of the activities offered. In the most part this was attributable to a tight knit, constructive, innovative and forward thinking rally committee, who remained positive no matter what unforeseen obstacles eventuated. It was a pleasure and a highlight of the year to work within such a motivated, good spirited group of people, and I would like to congratulate all those involved. The rally was extremely fortunate to be well supported by the local Sunshine Coast community and businesses. This was extended during the Post Rally Tour, with the welcomes provided by the communities visited making the event even more special and warm. The JDCQ and the Rally committee were pleased to be in a position to give back to these communities post rally, with significant donations being made to the Royal Flying Doctor Service, The Downs Steam Museum, the Gayndah Ladies Bowls Club, Sunshine Hospice, Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge, 4 Paws Animal Refuge and Buy a Bale. It was gratifying to see the club returning benefit to the communities that supported our event so generously. I would like thank Tony Herald for his support throughout the 2 years during which the rally was planned and executed. The role of Treasurer and Registrar was not easy at times, but Tony H had the confidence to allow me to get on with the task at hand, with a minimum of interference, being happy to monitor the reports as presented, accept news both good and bad constructively, always looking for a positive solution. My thanks to Gary Clark (Membership) and Ian Lind (Secretary) for their support and assistance throughout the year. We have worked well throughout the year, and have again minimised any potential issues. The executive committee of the JDCQ has been a cohesive and constructive group, good spirited and I have enjoyed the environment we created. Sadly, I will not be standing for the position of Treasurer for next year. I looked carefully at my personal objectives for 2017, and came to the conclusion that there is doubt as to whether I would be located appropriately to actually perform the role by mid So rather than opt out mid term, I feel it is better to have someone provide a cohesive and constant approach for the full year. I can say that I have really enjoyed my three years in the role, first with David McKnight as President then with Tony Herald. I take away many pleasant memories, and thank everyone who has been involved. The upcoming AGM in November is important for the future of the JDCQ. The President, Secretary, Treasurer and Editor are not continuing. This is a huge skill loss for the club, but provides an opportunity for some new blood to shape and guide the club into the future. The JDCQ, to remain legal, requires a Secretary, elected or appointed. To remain as a viable organisation it requires a President and a Treasurer. To maintain communication with the membership it requires an Editor. Please give consideration to taking up one of these roles, as a greater 24 th - 27 th March 2017 participation in the club leads to some rather enjoyable rewards. I will be happy to offer support and advice to the incoming Treasurer and will ensure there is a smooth hand over. My best wishes to the incoming committee, and I hope all enjoy their roles as much as I have for the past 3 years. Queensland Jaguar Driver November - December 2016 Web Edition. 17

Watching Brock on TV last night caused me to look up the results of the 1969 Bathurst 500. You may be aware of our member Digby Cooke, GC register, who has an XJ13 replica. Unknown to most of us Digby has a list of Bathurst heritage as below: In 1963 he finished 9th in class A in a Morris Mini 850 In 1964 he finished 13th in class B in a Simca Aronde In 1965 he finished 21st outright and 8th in class C in a Chrysler Valiant (I assume an AP6), against all the Cooper S s In 1966 he finished 11th outright and 2nd in class D in a Chrysler VC Valiant V8 In 1967 he qualified 43rd and finished 45th in a Morris Cooper S after a troubled run In 1968 he qualified 22nd, and finished 14th, with a 3rd place in class C in a Morris Cooper S In 1969 he qualified in 2nd place, but recorded a DNF in a Holden Monaro 350 In 1970 he qualified 13th and finished 34th in a Holden LC Torana GTR XU-1 after a possibly troubled race. In 1971 he qualified 23rd and finished 23rd in a Holden LC Torana GTR XU-1 In 1972 he qualified 31st and finished 12th, winning class B in a Ford Escort GT 1600 That s a pretty impressive effort over a decade. There are a number of treasures within the JDCQ and Digby is one of them JDCQ Supports Queensland s Needy Our Donations continue to be appreciated. It is rare that we are able to support those who need it most. Here, one donation is from the windfall surplus from the National Rally the other from the Mackay Whitsunday Regional Register who donate all their membership rebate every year.. The JDCQ will be remembered fondly for a long, long time by these deserving organisations. Queensland Jaguar Driver November - December 2016 Web Edition 18

19 ACJC AGM Chairman s Report on National Rally Futures, Membership and Club Evolution The ACJC promotes open discussion between club delegates contributing to the benefit and enjoyment of our members as Jaguar evolves in a changing world. It is incumbent on us to achieve and maintain a healthy balance between the early generation of Jaguar cars and the current and future Jaguar models as they develop. Along with the early cars, our membership is ageing, and our challenge is to attract and retain younger members for the survival and growth of the Jaguar Car Club movement, realising that newer younger members have different aspirations and expectations from a club movement, than current members. The days of technical workshops and garage working bees on member s cars with the spirit of William Lyons, Walter Hassan, Lofty England and all the other early legends of Jaguar, is changing to more social family involvement as the newer cars don t engender the same love of tradition or require the same level of care. Jaguar Cars is now a large modern multinational organisation building sophisticated cars in a broad market, far from the family hands on approach of the William Lyons years that has influenced the Jaguar clubs and ACJC to date. Changing demographics of our clubs is ongoing and requires management to achieve best results for the future. Websites are regarded as old hat by the new generation, most probably don t even take the time to search out and look at them. Social media is the current norm for people in a modern world. Some delegates will say we already have a Facebook page. Yes, some clubs have them. But how easy is it to find your club s page and be interactive with it. If it s not instantaneously available and user friendly, then it s not going to attract younger people. It also needs to be laid out to suit a younger persons interests, not old fogeys like us who think it s good. The big advantage of social media, is instant notification to members. If an event is cancelled unexpectedly, the person organising the event can post immediately to members without having to go through a web person. Regular notification of events, items of interest and opportunities for members are instantaneous. In time with changing of the old guard to the young, current magazines will be replaced by social media. My daughter April is standing for committee of JCCV and will undoubtedly use her skills to influence how they see and interact with the younger generation. We need to accept and encourage more of this change. This affects the future direction of our Jaguar clubs and the ACJC. The signs of this changing world for us was the first National Rally to be held this year at Caloundra without a Concours event. Modern Jaguars represented over 50% of cars on display a major change from just 10 years ago.what will a display day look like in 10 years time? The 2017 JDCA (with JDCHR) National Rally will be held in the traditional format, however the 2018 National Rally in South Australia is changing further towards a more rally based format, spread over a number of days in various places, with participants opting for the whole experience, or those days that most interest them. How the National Rally evolves to remain relevant for our members is an exciting challenge for us all to grapple with and enjoy over the coming years. This has also led to the ongoing update of the National Rally Manual to reflect these changes, and this will become a working document in progress as the Rally evolves. Changing needs and expectations from our members has initiated trophy rationalisation, with all clubs contributing to what we see as the DNA (William Lyons Years) trophies that are a given, and trophies that will change and be removed over time as our members requirements for participation change. I take this opportunity on behalf of all ACJC delegates from recent to current, to thank Rod Mathers on his retirement from the ACJC, for his outstanding role as secretary. Rod has carried out the role efficiently and with vigour, and we will miss his experience and guidance. We welcome Nick Pusenjak as Rod s replacement for JCCWA. Nick you re going to enjoy working with us all. Thank you to all delegates for your contributions this year. The ACJC and our clubs are the better for the efforts of everyone, and we are on a firm footing going forward to meet the challenges of the Jaguar Car Club movement evolving in a changing world. Vale for Bill Pappin Bill passed away on Friday 23rd September, about 3pm. After ywars of fighting cancer. Bill had a Jaguar E-type series 1 FHC. 20 Darling Downs Weekend Away Ron and Kara Formella organised the annual Darling Downs Weekend Away this year. Everyone met at Hungry Jacks in Warwick, Rob and Margaret brought along their brand new Jaguar XE. The first stop was a visit to Castle Glen distillery where they blend and flavour a great variety of liqueurs etc. The building, constructed to look like a medieval castle is actually quite modern. Many members purchased alcoholic treasures, Helen found a rum and chocolate liqueur. Saturday lunch halt was at the Wallangarra railway station, literally on the Qld / NSW border. One side of the platform has a curved roof canopy in Qld, the other has a sloping flat roof for NSW. The sample tasting was fun as always. The variety of bottles and the display alone are worthy of a visit. So many colours and so many flavour combinations. Severn Brae Estate winery and cheese factory. Our host, Bruce, cheerfully offered the wines and port for all to sample. The Grumpy Old Bastard port being particularly popular. The main building has a history, having been moved repeatedly and utilised for a number of different things over the years Queensland Jaguar Driver November - December 2016 Web Edition 20

21 Kara Formella is presented with the Sporting Trophy from the Darling Downs shooting event Last visit of the Saturday was to the Happy Valley Resort. Here they brew a variety of boutique beers and offer sample trays with a selection. Happy hour at the High Street Motor Inn, our accommodation for the night. Warm enough to sit beneath the palm trees until the sun went down. Then to the dining room where we had a really good 2 course dinner on the Saturday evening and a big breakfast on the Sunday morning, all included in the package.. A visit to the Stanthorpe Look-out on the Sunday morning. Views over the town and across the Granite Belt. The Mark 2 auto of Kieran and Marianne Lillis was experiencing mechanical maladies. On the Saturday, the throttle linkage was only opening the carbys a very small amount, making hill climbing very slow. That was reset at the motel on Saturday arvo and the engine suddenly came to life, revving nicely. On the Sunday, the kick-down cable seized and the car wanted to stay in the lower gears longer than it should. Parking across a spoon drain gave access beneath but repairs beyond road-side assistance were needed. However, with care they continued and completed the run, then later drove carefully home. Photos from Terry Whitehouse and Helen Sunday lunch at the Darling Downs Hotel, Sandy Creek then all off home again. Queensland Jaguar Driver November - December 2016 Web Edition. 21

22 Brisbane Register And the Heavens Opened! So for weeks the sun shone and typical Queensland late winter weather smiled upon Brisbane. Then a few days before the planned Fish & Chip luncheon run to Cleveland Point the most visited website was the BOM radar image. Storms were coming! What a relief on the morning of the run when the Red/Blue patterns on the weather picture perhaps were tracking just south of the Lighthouse Restaurant, our planned venue. Mid morning and the forward contingent met at Ron McCann s Undercover Cars for a chat and wander around his somewhat eclectic collection where some are to keep and some for sale, including a pretty smart Mk9. Thank you Ron! On to Cleveland point as happily, the weather was holding! 25 brave souls had arrived and were soon tucking into a very good fish and chips lunch oblivious to the fact that the heavens were about to open. Chairs and tables were shifted around to keep away from the drips and dribbles emanating from the hard working gutters, however in the end calamity befell. Well it was actually a waterfall that fell upon Peter Finn. Never seen him move so quickly in a long time! An esky full of ice creams treats, that were to be presented in the park come into the venue to be enjoyed before our goodbyes. Weather wise better luck next time, but it was an amusing topic of conversation. Shed Open Day With Lloyd and Lorraine Anderson The silver & black Mk V of CJEC member Gary Mikkelsen. The red XJ6 was Lloyd and Lorraine s daily driver for 20 years. Sold last year to JDCQ member Shane Bowering who has been improving its looks to advertise his business Red Tape Busters. A modern Jaguar amongst the classics. Good to see members bring new cars to these events too. 24 Sunshine Coast Lindsay Price, Sunshine Coast Chairman Welcome All, This is the first report since the committee was formed on Sunday 21 August. Since then we have had the F-Pace launch at Maroochydore Airport on the evening of 27 August and the Spring run with the Austin Healey Club. This event was well attended by Jaguar members and was a great day. It was also a chance to meet some of our new members - Welcome again. Next weekend was the Kilcoy Classics on Wheels on Saturday and All British Day at Tennyson on Sunday. Then the Noosa Classic on Sunday 2nd October. We have a rather full calendar of events up to our Christmas Party on the 4th of December. So far we have some events planned for the next year s calendar. These range from a sunset cruise on the Noosa River, Drive to Toogoolawah and parachute demonstration by Ramblers Parachute Club. Drive to Imbil and lunch at the Railway Hotel and workshop tour and Classic Ridz vehicle restoration. When I was there recently they had 4 Jaguars in the shop. A big thankyou to our secretary Margaret who has offered to stand in while our regular Cats Tales editior Ray Judd is unavailable. Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at these events. Safe motoring, Lindsay Price. MEMBERS CARS - Joe & Marg Day s Kitty Cat Our Kitty Cat our XK140 which Joe & I purchased in the UK.. Kitty is a 1987 Aristocat Jaguar XK140. The XJ6 is the principal donor car and the finished product is a very sleek classic Jaguar XKJ140 look alike but running a 4.2ltr Jaguar engine gear box suspension and brakes. It is such a more modern vehicle that the 1950 s XK. Kitty cruises mile after mile in an easy driving style as she has power steering and power assisted brakes. 25 F-Pace Launch at Pacific Jaguar On the 27th September members of the J.D.C.Q were invited to the launch of the Jaguar F-Pace SUV. The event was organized by Carmel Fulton of Pacific Jaguar and was a spectacular evening enjoyed by all I spoke to. The launch was held at Machjet International which is located at the Maroochydore Airport. The venue featured three business jets, two helicopters, a range of Range Rover vehicles and an F type backed by two of the aircraft. With illuminated JAGUAR lettering in the background the result was spectacular. There was a James Bond theme with posters of the recent Spectre film on display. There was also a roulette wheel which we could gamble away our Jaguar Dollars which we were given on entry. The lucky door prize was a three course meal at the Tamarind Restaurant Maleny. I am sure Susan and I will enjoy it. With the band playing and waiters serving food and drinks the star of the night was still hidden under wraps. The evening commenced when Mr Craig Mc Pherson dealer principal of Pacific Jaguar introduced Mr Tim Jones a wellknown English motoring contaminator. Tim started by giving a brief history of Jaguar. From humble beginnings to competition and styling success. Tim then drew back the covers and revealed the newest member of the Jaguar family - The F Pace SUV. Tim described the styling traditions of previous Jaguars built into the new F-Pace. Some subtle some not so. Like when the bonnet is open it looks like the growler face. The vehicle has many new and innovative features and I am certain it will be a success. The F-Pace does not have that over jacked up bloated appearance of so many of its competitors. It also has none of the box on wheels appearance of its Land Rover relatives. Sir William Lions design philosophy was Grace, Space and Pace. The legend continues. 26 Chairman s Weekend Away Leaving Nerang at 9.30 am on a beautiful late winter/early spring morning we headed off on our three day trip via Canungra to our customary pit stop at Beaudesert. After stretching our legs we then travelled on through Boonah to the Cunningham Highway before stopping at Aratula for lunch. The hosts at the BP Roadhouse welcomed us in and put on a wonderful spread of sandwiches for lunch, followed up by a choice of homemade cakes and sweetmeats together with tea or coffee to our choice. Suitably reinforced for our continuing journey, we then headed off west up Cunninghams Gap towards Warwick. On the way, rounding a corner we came upon two B -Double trucks stopped on the hill on the other side of the Queensland Jaguar Driver November - December 2016 Web Edition Gold Coast Register Chairman s Weekend Away Group at Lake Leslie. road, and with the hill and bend together it posed a bit of a safety risk. However we navigated this safely and continued on to the Australian Rodeo Heritage Centre in Warwick where we were given a guided tour of displays showing the various champions of this activity. Most members thought the participants in these events must be crazy to take such risks! Leaving the Heritage Centre we then made our way to the Coachmans Motel nearby which was our accommodation for the weekend. After booking in and freshening up, most of us congregated in Chairman Terry and Di s room for pre-dinner drinks and a natter before dinner. The ladies brought along a selection of cheese, dips and biscuits. It was a most congenial afternoon. Dinner was served in the motel dining room which was fully booked for the evening. The following morning after breakfast we headed off for a tour of the Abbey of the Roses. This was an imposing sandstone building in the heart of Warwick currently used as a special function centre and B&B. It has a long and interesting history, being built in stages and originally a convent then a girls school. The present owner gave us a guided tour and desribed the work he had done over the years to restore it to its current condition. Leaving the Abbey the next stop was Clifton where we enjoyed a delightful Irish stew at O Shanleys Irish pub. For the boys amongst us we were able to view a group of beautifully restored vintage motorcycles in an adjacent garage, together with showcases of memorabilia. Heading back to Warwick we then visited Pringle Cottage, built and lived in by the stonemason who built the Abbey of the Roses in the 1890s. The cottage and associated buildings now house a large collection of historical artifacts, from farm machinery to schoolroom items and toys and including a fully fledged printing press Ray Howlett went weak at the knees when he saw the set-up and was happy to give a talk to all on how it worked. Other items included historical clothes and household items from the 19th and early 20th Century. It was then back to the motel for a few quick drinks and nibblies and then on to dinner. Following breakfast on Sunday we packed ready for the trip home. Most of the group stayed in convoy leaving Warwick and we had a delightful drive through the country on back roads to Leslie Lake and Dam where we did a bit of sightseeing. We then headed off to join the Cunningham Highway and Cunninghams Gap. We were fortunate not leaving later as a bushfire was threatening the road on the way down the mountain and the bush fire brigade was on the way and would probably have closed the road for a short time. On the way home members stopped again at the BP Roadhouse for lunch before heading home. It was great weekend away with 24 members participating and thanks go to Terry and Di Cooper for their efforts in arranging it. Thank You to Debbie Duncan for some of the photos of the Chairman s Weekend Away. 26

27 It s That Time Again Nominations for the 2017 Gold Coast Register Committee 2016 has been a very successful year for the Gold Coast Register with great events taking us across parts of South East Queensland and Northern NSW and to a variety of restaurants, and thanks go to those members who have contributed in some way. We would like to continue this tradition into To do this we need an active committee to manage the club business and plan and carry out the various activities. Helping out in the club is rewarding experience and a great way to enjoy friendships with people of similar interests. Members are invited to put their name forward for a position on the committee for All positions become vacant at the end of the year and we welcome people that can contribute with new ideas for the new committee. Whether you wish to put in that little bit of extra effort and take a key position, or simply just help out as a member of the supporting committee who are asked to plan one event during the year, you would be welcome. We would love to have some more ladies on the committee. Please contact Ron Gaudion on before the November AGM, or see him at the November meeting and let him know your interest. 28 Wide Bay & Burnett Region Including Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Maryborough Christmas Dinner Christmas Dinner will be held on the Saturday night 17th December and the menu for the main course is Lamb Cutlets, Barramundi, and the Chicken Breast. The dessert menu is the peach mango crumble, fruit pavlova and the Chocolate Mousse. The way it works is the meals are dropped alternately (same as last year when we only had the choice of only 2 meals) and it s pot luck what you get. Last year, if we didn t like what was placed in front of us, we swapped with someone else. Everybody was happy then. The venue is The Rowers Club, Quay Street. Saturday night 17th December. Sunday morning, we will be going to the Rum Distillery after morning tea. Any questions, ring or Rhonda Biggenden Cosy Cafe Our last meeting was held in the Cosy Cafe in Biggenden. Whilst it was a wet cool day we had a pleasant day which commenced at the cafe for smoko and followed by the meeting. There were eleven members in attendance. Plans were laid for the remainder of the year. After smoko we headed for the local museum for a look at the towns history which had more of interest than we had thought. This old truck pictured had a homemade water drilling rig mounted on the back which was built in I found this rig fascinating as it was built from parts of all manner of bits and pieces. Very different to the Atlas Copco crawlair that I once worked with. That s David Carlon with the truck which is still drivable. The following pic is of Bevin Hillyard playing with an old telephone exchange and I am sure many will remember these. Queensland Jaguar Driver November - December 2016 Web Edition After the museum we headed back to the café for lunch. Despite the inclement weather we had a good day spoiled only by having cleaned the car the day before and ruining the tyre black that I had used for the first time in ten years. Wide Bay and Classic Jaguar Enthusiasts Club Outing Sunday 31st of July saw our little group meeting up with Classic Jaguar Enthusiast s club from Brisbane in Hervey Bay. Their chairman Roger invited us to attend the day in the Bay historical museum. This museum has had lot of improvements since we were last there and there is no sign of the damage done in a recent fire. The day was glorious and it was a pleasure to meet up with likeminded enthusiasts. Various displays were held such as shearing and chain-saw artistry and a wonderful morning tea This Daimler from the Sunny Coast caught the eye everyone. was included. An altogether delightful day. 28 Some of the members of our group. Bevan Hillyard, Bill Buckley, Josie Mittlehueser

29 The Wide Bay Register Annual Meeting Held at Josie and Pauls Home in Hervey Bay. After a wonderful morning tea provided by Josie and Paul we held our meeting to elect the new committee. Results of the voting for committee positions were as follows. Chairman, Arthur Bock. Secretary, Lee Buckley. Treasures, Paul Mittelheuser. Editor. Bill Buckley. Social Secretary, Rhonda Thrush. The highlight of the day was to be an observation rally organised by Paul and Josie. After the meeting the rally commenced. This was a lot of fun and an odometer was essential to keep on track. The route took us all around Hervey Bay and back through Dundowran to finish at the tavern where we had lunch. After lunch the winners of the rally were announced and surprisingly a Jaguar won, Lee and Bill Buckley sans odometer were the lucky crew. We were pleased to be able to welcome two new members from Bundaberg, Dave Ward and his partner June Wilkie and their series 111 which failed to proceed before leaving home. (just a flat). They were forced to arrive in not a Jaguar. Classic Jaguar Enthusiasts Club Tri-State Pushrod Jaguar Rally. With Lloyd Anderson The Queensland Classic Jaguar Enthusiasts Club participated in a Tri-State Pushrod Jaguars Rally in September. Unfortunately, it was spoiled by all the rain, both at the venue in Orange and on the way to and fro. The other States participating were Victoria and South Australia, where it rained even more. Here are photos I took of some of the cars at the motel in Orange. Queensland Jaguar Driver November - December 2016 Web Edition. 29

30 Mk 2 Burblings November- December with Robin Todd I was talking the other day to an old friend of the JDCQ. Those of us who are becoming the more senior members of our Club will well remember the fabulous Australia Day Picnics held at the home of Geoff and Geri Underhill [previously known to most of us as Jeff & Jerry] as well as the special Greet and Meet functions when the ACJC used to arrange tours of the various member Jaguar Clubs by special guests such as Norman Dewes and unfortunately just before my time by the one and only FWR Lofty England former Jaguar Service Manager, Motor Racing Team Manager and subsequent to the retirement of Sir William Lyons the Chairman and Chief Executive of Jaguar Cars. Anyway back to the Underhills. Geoffrey has recently decided to give up driving because of his developing eyesight problem and Geri has taken over driving his car so hers is just about to go on sale. It is a red Series 3 Vanden Plas from about 1984/5 originally built for the American market that Geri would like to see go to caring suitable home. In typical Jeff fashion it would have been well maintained and would seem to me to be an ideal club registered car to use at our events. I have also included a photo of them both at the christening of the Lifeflight nee Care Flight helicopter bearing their name following Jeffs donation to the cause. Recently we attended the Sunday Lunch that was the final event on the Darling Downs Registers annual Weekend away. The lunch was held at the Sandy Creek Pub which is rapidly becoming something of a favourite of mine for the friendliness of their welcome and meals. It was good to be able to catch up again with some of the people who attend our Classic Monocoque Register Lunches and some who because of work commitments are unable to attend our mid-week lunches. We had a nice relaxing time. Came home, put the XJ to bed in the shed and ticked another metaphorical box. Next morning all was not so euphoric when I found or if fact couldn t find the keys to the Ford or my mobile. Searched everywhere as you do, rang Gary at the Sandy Creek but still no keys or mobile. About this time my dearly beloved became involved until I explained that I can t think of where they might be while I m answering a third degree that would put the Gestapo to shame. I m only a man I can only do one thing at a time. Ring the phone. Why, it s not turned on. In a brief flash of clarity I decided to get the XJ out of the shed into the bright sunlight for a more serious search. Lo and behold there is the mobile down between the seat cushion and the transmission tunnel and the mobile [colour black] in clear view on the floor mat also colour black. Prior to the run out to Sandy Creek I had decided to give the XJ an oil change which is not too hard but just takes a fair bit of time. A call to Repco to ensure they still had the filter I ordered some months ago. The answer being yes it was simple to check if I still had any containers of fresh oil from last time. One container still had the seal unbroken so it should havbe been a quick trip to Warwick to pick up the filter and another 5 litres of oil which of course became a trip to some shops followed by lunch followed by more shops to seemingly check their stock levels and late in the afternoon call into Repco. Bright and early next morning [ well actually it wasn t actually bright and early it was more of a early start for someone who has been retired for many many years, which means it was sometime well after morning tea] A quick look to check if it was going to rain and/or be too hot and start the car and back it out into the yard, then warm it up to ensure the oil drains easily. Then let it cool back down again because my method of removing the oil filter is to remove the air filter and work from the top down, however to remove the aforementioned air filter I have to first remove the cross brace to the mudguards which means I have to rest my left hand on the camshaft covers to undo the securing nut. A practice which results in a severe burn to the back of my left hand if the engine is hot. With that monstrosity of tinware called the air filter removed that side of the motor now looks so clean and practical that the thought rushes into my head that how good would it all look if I replaced the big tin thing with a couple of pancake filters. That means hours of searching the web for types and availability. That resolved I suspect that a change in filter often means a change in carby needle so off to find my book on all things SU. That book was the answer to the needles for the Lancer after many experts and many other self styled knowledgeable persons had twisted, pushed, prodded and advised the solutions. By this time, of course, it was late in the afternoon so the only real solution was to put everything away and park the XJ back in the shed. Next morning after a leisurely start and a quick run to warm up the engine and confirm the richer needles may be needed with pancake filters as without any air cleaners it certainly runs out of urge in the RPM range. Now comes the tricky part - driving the car up on to the ramps. Valerie still has vivid memories of the time way back when we were building the Lancer and that under her guidance I drove it up on to the ramps and straight over the top because of a Queensland Jaguar Driver November - December 2016 Web Edition 30

31 clutch malfunction [it didn t disengage the gearbox from the engine]. It took a couple of days of jacking, chocking, jacking again etc until everything was back to normal. The only scars being in Valerie s memory probably, I suppose, because she was standing in front of it. Anyway, all went well even though I think Valerie provided a certain amount of guidance with her eyes closed. With the XJ up on the ramps the oil is drained easily and the filter changed. Astute readers are probably going to ask how do I replace the oil filter working from the top down when the car is up on the ramps, well it becomes very easy by using a small step ladder with set of three steps on each side, therefore I can reach as far down the side of the engine as necessary without any straining. With 5 litres of new oil poured into the engine I get out the other carton and yes the seal has not been broken it came off with the cap and the contents are 5 litres of old oil from the previous change. Luckily, I had parked the XJ in such a position that I could still get the other car out of the garage - did I have a premonition or is it just that now a day I expect something to go wrong. Wizz inside to say to Valerie that I m going to slip into Repco for more oil only to be told you are not going into town like that - you need to clean up and change your clothes. Says I it is 4.30pm if I don t go now they will be closed. Says V I don t care you are not going like that. Says I I don t care, it s your car it can stay out in the yard for ever.in the true spirit of mutual cooperation I got cleaned up a bit, drove faster than usual and bought the oil before 5.00pm. Poured in the extra oil, degreased everything I could find and put all the tools, ramps etc., and the XJ away before tea. Next morning I replaced the tin monstrosity of an air filter and the cross brace. Job Done And there you have it dear reader - How a retired gentleman can be as busy as a little bee down in his shed for days and days and not get anything done. I suspect that this is the last magazine for the year, so I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year On that cheery note it is time to say bye and maybe see you at lunch or somewhere else. 32 E - type & F - type Register With Clive Arnold & Tony Nelson gmail.com Save the date - Sunday 27th August, A Day in the Country Charity Event. Peak Crossing 2017 Hopefully, members will have read in the September - October magazine and viewed the excellent layout created by our Editor Perry. I would also like to thank Perry for his contribution to this club, while he has created our most important club magazine.for those reticent in sending in something to be published, fear not. Just type out your item of interest, hopefully include some photos and wait to see what our Editor comes up with in the next magazine. Sorry, I digressed. Back to Peak Crossing. We would always like to have Jaguar as the major marque attending on the day. We were overwhelmed with the complimentary comments on the day, the s and telephone calls received after the Peak Crossing A Day in the Country Charity Event last August. If you have not seen all the photos of the day here are two links: Again, we remind members who did participate to only refer to it as Peak Crossing and do not disclose the address, so we can keep the event just for enthusiasts with no public participation. Also to the members who had registered but for other reasons had the good manners to advise us they could not attend on the day. The reason it ran so professionally was thanks to the many members who willingly gave of their time and resources in small and large ways to ensure the success and with the knowledge that they are giving back to the community by their actions. We have found some more display space, but must close off the numbers at 220 cars on the day, which is only 18 cars more than Invitations will be published next year, but registering now ensures your place. Last year, our first registrations were received in November 2015 and sadly some late registrations for this 2016 event, after the RSVP date, could not be accepted. You must register and receive a return confirming your registration to be present on the day. The entry fee remains at $15 a car. We now invite you to save the date and register for this event. 33 Jaguar Mid-Week Drive with Alfa Romeos 26th October, 2016 WithTony Nelson With a lot of Nelson travelling happening in 2016 it was now my turn to again offer a Mid-Week Drive to a location we had not visited before. Alfa Romeos, Jaguars, a Mercedes and others. On the road to Gatton. Good variety of Alfa Romeos. Montreal, 33, 75, GTV & Spider. Mid-Week driver Neil Summerson suggested the Gatton Motor Museum and Cafe as a possible breakfast location. I followed up and although they did not offer breakfasts mid week, if I had enough participants, they would do a buffet breakfast for us. I said I could guarantee 15 to 25 participants and they agreed to provide a breakfast, if I could create these numbers. As every organiser of any event knows, you just have to hope others will like your ideas and put out the invitation and hope for the best. The replies started coming in. It was interesting to note we had more Alfa Romeos than Jaguars on the day. Once past the RSVP date, I supplied details of the drive to members who had accepted the invitation with the actual address of the breakfast location, something I have never done before. Coming into Laidley across the mountain, we actually encountered two traffic delays that tested the cooling systems in our cars. At the second delay, they had traffic lights and my thoughts turned to our brother-in-law who was killed while being a stop go man in between jobs. He would still be with us if traffic lights were used following the rest of the world, instead of the manual stop go process we still use. Variety in the Jaguars also. E-type, F-type, XK8 and Mark 2. Thankfully, with the traffic delay, I had told the cafe an ETA time later than expected so when we arrived, we had time for a chat and we entered the cafe with breakfast waiting. It was interesting watching the interaction of Jaguar and Alfa Romeo owners and breakfast seemed to last longer than usual. We also had new members from both marques and visitors attend and I was pleased the way that the long term Mid-Week Drivers welcomed them to our group. I think we re being followed. I need to thank Steve Bowdery of the Alfa Romeo Club for the photos. If you wish to be invited on our events, me with your details to eandftyperegister@gmail.com. 34 Nuts & Bolts With Bill McMonagle Historical Registration I was a little intrigued to stumble across the August 1986 issue of this magazine and in it saw a very early article I had written as a members write contribution concerning historical registration. In those far distant days I would write an article in longhand and send it off by post (snail mail) to the editor who would then type it up and put it into the magazine. None of your modern PC and electronic mail systems were available. In fact I could not even type let alone turn on a computer! We did have a typing pool but that was strictly for official use. All that came to an abrupt halt sometime in the early 1990s when my employer suddenly decided that we would all be trained in computer use and horror of horrors learn how to type. Because I was away on a field job which was unavoidable when the bulk training took place I was despatched to a Milton based organisation for a two day intensive training course on how to turn on a computer, use an early Windows system and basic tuition in keyboard skills. The lady tutor had just two students namely myself and a lady who was head typist for a large local government concern. My fellow student smoked cigarettes, drove a Holden FJ Ute and tended to call a spade a shovel. She was also blindingly fast as a typist. When we were being shown how to use spell check she remarked that she really didn t need it as she never made mistakes but she would make sure that her subordinates learnt how to use it. While I hammered away and completed a whole 2 lines she completed a page. When it was challenged by spell check it came up with a couple of errors. These were subsequently proven wrong as the programme was United States (US) based and the differences were US spelling. E.g. we spell honour and the yanks spell honor. Anyway with this system now working I was now able to type the Nuts and Bolts column but we had still not gotten onto internet E mail systems so I would transfer my writings onto a 41/2 inch floppy disc and post it to the editor. Eventually E mail came and that is how this system currently functions. It is interesting to note that my first historically registered car was a MK1 and as far as I know it was the first historically registered car in the JDCQ. The registration number was The total cost was $44 which consisted of $8 a year third party insurance and $36 main road fees. We did not have a certifying officer and Peter Lehrke, as the then MK1&2 register leader, certified that the car was 30 years old. Actually we just really didn t know the exact date of manufacture but MK1s were produced from 1955 and used that as a basis for the date. I have just paid the historical registration for one of my Jaguars and it now costs $ per annum. Isn t inflation wonderful? Flying to lunch The Monocoque register was having its October lunch at Rudd s Pub in Nobby. Now I like attending these lunches but the return home though afternoon peak hour traffic especially from the Toowong Cemetery through to home at Joyner in Pine Rivers really gives me the pips. In discussion with our Monocoque register fearless leader Robin Todd, the concept of flying to the lunch came up and he offered to pick us up at Clifton aerodrome which is quite close to Nobby. Everything went to plan and the typical 2 1/2 hour drive was reduced to 45 minutes in the Piper Cherokee. In fact we arrived a half hour before the agreed pickup time however Trevor Bange who owns the aerodrome and has an ultra-light flying school was able to pluck my brain on some aviation training matters. This doesn t mean I have given up driving Jaguars but aviation over longer distances is certainly safer and less frustrating. By the way this month marks my 50 years of commercial flying. My first commercial flight was a charter from Cunnamulla to Mt. Alford in October Other happenings A JDCQ club member was happy to take the 3.4 Jag engine off my hands that I had offered for free in the last issue of this magazine. However to get to the engine I had to move my Series 3 XJ6. Came the agreed date the XJ6 refused to start. It Queensland Jaguar Driver November - December 2016 Web Edition 34

35 was a fuel pump problem and could not be fixed quickly. So the new owner and I wrestled and rolled the engine out a side door where we were able to use my engine crane to hoist it onto his utility. The Series 2 XJ6 engine has been claimed by another JDCQ club member and he will be taking delivery in November. The electric fuel pump problem in the Series 3 XJ6 was a bit of a mystery. It is fairly new and had not given any previous indication of problems. I removed the pump and drained it and attached 12 volts to it and it wouldn t work. I gave it a bit of a tap and it started to run. After putting it back in the car it has behaved quite OK. As this will be the last JDCQ magazine for the year, I would like to wish readers the compliments of the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations. Each year a group from the Sunshine Coast organises a Road Trip to participate in a Race or Sprint meeting a little further than usual from our base. Previous trips south to Newcastle for the Matara Festival and north to Townsville have been very successful. The lure of racing on the V8 Supercar track at Townsville was too great and our second Road Trip north eventuated again in A relaxed journey camping in free camps and being self sufficient in trailers or 4WD with a few stopovers is the usual. Four locals left the Sunny Coast and met up with another southerner from Rockhampton while meeting another from south of the border in Townsville. After the overnighters in Rockhampton and Home Hill we arrived in Townsville ready to have a look around the track and settle into the caravan park before scrutineering. Cars were stored in the V8 Supercar pit bays overnight allowing a relaxed night and early start the next day. Entry numbers for the events promoted by the very active Marque Club in Townsville (they run up to 8 events a year) have not been strong this year with the downturn in the Far North economy, a field of 30+ had us thinking we would need extra fuel for the number of runs which we guessed would be far more than any other sprint event we do in SE Qld usually between 6 and 10. Correct, 20 runs over the weekend saw all of our group have few car problems and put in some great times on the super smooth and grippy circuit, the ripple strips are made for jumping over and the track while short at 1.6 Km is a real challenge to get right. The competitors from the north are all young compared to the usual NBCCC group (we had the 6 oldest cars there!) and have later model turbo powered cars, the Jag was easily the oldest car there followed by the Clubman, MG Midget, Escorts and XD Falcon. Great to see the younger generation being involved and the Marque Club promotes this by having Club cars that juniors can use for events on their home tracks. The run home was uneventful although road works tended to slow things a little, after over 2000Km interestingly the behaviour of cars & trucks on the A1 was excellent with no idiots on the road, that was until we got back to the SE corner! Looking forward to our Road Trip next year south again? Queensland Jaguar Driver November - December 2016 Web Edition. 35

36 Sunshine Coasters Join with Austin Healey Owners With Tony Herald Healeys and Jaguars plus an AC all on a day out together. The Austin Healey Owners Club of Queensland invited the Jaguar Drivers Club of Queensland, Sunshine Coast Register, to join them for a scenic lunch run on September 11th. After some pretty wet days leading up to the weekend the appointed Sunday dawned bright and sunny and stayed that way all day. Just the thing for a team of top down Austin Healeys. Participants from both clubs, in Austin Healeys, Jaguars, a couple of miscellaneous rides and a small collection of Cobras, met at the carpark of Aussie World for a morning chat and drivers briefing. Mike Smith, AHOCQ organiser for the event, had a very interesting and scenic drive planned and we all set off at 9am for morning tea at Mary Cairncross Park, Melany. We avoided the highway, joining the Landsborough Maleny climb part way up the hill, unfortunately behind a very slow moving piece of agricultural machinery no, not a Volvo. A parade of racy Austin Healeys and majestic Jaguars crawling up a great driving road just wasn t right, but unfortunately it happens. On arrival at Mary Cairncross Park there was ample room for parking our fleet of around 20 cars and everyone quickly broke out the morning tea supplies. There was plenty of time for a good chat and the club members mixed freely which was pleasing. We welcomed new JDCQ members David and Sue Lewis who have moved from Sydney to Montville and were in a lovely X150 convertible. David and Sue are used to the Jaguar Club scene being members of the JDCA. After much chatting, checking out the glorious cars and sharing morning tea goodies we headed off on a long and again, scenic, drive to the Glasshouse Mountains lookout. The one hour s drive took us along Maleny-Stanley River Road, Kilcoy- Beerwah Road, Commissioners Flat Road, Peachester Road, Old Gympie Road and finally Glasshouse-Woodford Road before reaching the lookout. There we were treated to magnificent views over broad acre pine forests to various peaks of the Glass House mountains and, in the far distance, the Sunshine Coast coastline. Finally, we then drove a short distance to the village of Glasshouse Mountains where we almost filled the dining area of the Glasshouse Mountains Tavern. Lunch was a bit slow arriving but enjoyable and economical and provided yet another chance for a good light-hearted chat. At the conclusion of the afternoon it was agreed by members of both the AHOCQ and the JDCQ that it was such an enjoyable get-together that we must do it again soon. So if you missed this one make sure you come along on our next combined AHOCQ/JDCQ run. You won t be disappointed. Morning tea at Mary Cairncross Park. 37 Noosa Beach Classic Car Show 2016 An Enthusiasts Delight With Tony Herald The ultimate finnie Cadillac, the People s Choice winner. Encouragement Award winner. Historic XK120 in restoration. The Annual Noosa Beach Classic Car Show, held in Lion s Park just off the end of Hastings Street, Noosa Heads, is an all makes classic car feast and one of the best such cars shows in SE Queensland. Last year Jaguar was the marque of the show and we fielded a huge array of our favourite cars. This year Ford was the star marque and similarly an impressive display of all models of Fords, from a T Model to the latest Mustang, graced Lion s Park for our enjoyment. Of course there are many, many other marques and cars on display, well over 200, so whatever your fancy there was something for you to ogle over. The Jaguar roll-up was a bit light on this year with only four JDCQ cars leaving from the meeting point at Noosaville and a further five or so already at the park. There were of course a number of non JDCQ Jaguars in attendance bringing the total number to approximately 15, a fairly modest number but a very nice representation of the Jaguar marque. As is our usual custom, most of the JDCQ members ensured their cars were parked and ready for the day with the club tent erected for use later, then headed off to the Noosa Heads Surf Club for a great breakfast overlooking the beach, the blue ocean and the even brighter cloudless blue sky. It doesn t get any better than this. After our leisurely breakfast we arrived back at the Car Show just as the judges were checking out the cars in their various classes. The judging is not a rigorous concours judging so is fairly quickly completed, not a drama at all. The rest of the day can be spent having a stroll through the rows of magnificently presented autos and catching up with friends and fellow enthusiasts. It is surprising how many you end up bumping into at this show and each one is a good excuse for a chat and a catch-up. This is really a big part of the enjoyment of shows of this type and this one in particular. After a tasty lunch from the Rotary tent the awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd for each class are given followed by special awards such as best in Show. So at about 1.45pm we gathered around the trophy tent to hear the results. Jaguars did well on the day with a non JDCQ V 12 E Type DHC owned by George McCallum taking out 1st place in British Sports Class. The engine in Georges car was spectacular, an overall gorgeous car. Second place went to Tony Herald (yes me) with his 1984 XJ-S Coupe, a very satisfying result. Best British Saloon went to another non JDCQ Jaguar, a beautiful red Mk2 owned by John and Lea Warren, second place was awarded to Sunshine Coast JDCQ member Peter Morgan with his excellent white Mk2. In the special awards, Mat Noble (non JDCQ) received an encouragement award for his under restoration, green XK120. So Jaguar s honour was upheld once more. After the award presentation there is always a bit of a rush to leave to beat the traffic. Ironically this creates a traffic jam in and around the park anyway so Lindsay and I stayed back to pack up and left when the bulk of the traffic had cleared. Once again an excellent day in beautiful weather and a hard to beat setting. The organisation by the Noosa Beach Classic Car Club crew was spot on and they should be congratulated for delivering yet another great car show. It is also good to know that a large part of the takings for the day will be donated to worthy causes in the Sunshine Coast area. If you couldn t make it this year you missed a wonderful day, so ensure you put it on your list for next year, see you there. Tony Herald s award winning XJ-S. Queensland Jaguar Driver November - December 2016 Web Edition. Tony Morgan, 2nd place, Best British Sedan. 37 Tony Herald, 2nd place, Best British Sports.

The idea is to gather together XJC and Daimler Coupes for a relaxed tour with The National Jaguar Rally in Port Stephens as our destination. Full or partial participation in the National Rally is an option, with participation in the Jaguar Display Day on Saturday 25 October a must. The tour is essentially a hop on and hop off style event, simply allowing you to do as much or as little as you wish of the tour with a minimal amount of structure and organisation.
