We had some wonderful highs last year, with so many new Sisters joining us, and many fun events and interesting cultural programs. We have much to be grateful for.

The anticipation and planning our Sisters, Christine, Barbara, Cathy and Cary, to make this special for each of you.

We have much to be grateful for. We were all looking forward to our Annual Christmas Luncheon, with 38 in attendance..and then the Lilac Wildfire broke out just two days before our event. Everything changed. The anticipation and planning our Sisters, Christine, Barbara, Cathy and Cary, to make this special for each of you.twelve Sisters having to evacuate their homes and our sweet Sister Diane, losing her home in the fire. Each of us carries that sadness with us. So here we are, gathering together at our January meeting. I encourage each of you to come, as we together bond with stories of loss, survival and hope, in creating plans for our Sisterhood s future. We will have a meeting, selecting delegates for our upcoming Daughters of Norway Convention and plans for the Scandinavian Heritage Day in the Desert (February 17 th ). For our January cultural program, Julie Watts will be giving a program on The Hygge Manifesto, in place of her trip to Iceland, which she will give in March. 2 Continued from p. 1 Luncheon. With Julie s Danish heritage, we will be sharing how the Danes are so happy compared to other countries. Although, this year the Norwegians had earned that title. Simply stated, it is about gratitude and savoring the simple pleasures in life, in its pursuit of everyday happiness. Among the books on Scandinavian crafts are Hardanger Basics and Beyond, Mary Thomas s Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches, Rosemaling: the Beautiful Norwegian Art & Design Collection #2, and Straw Art Companion: Instructions, Projects and History. There are Cookbooks: Authentic Norwegian Cooking and Cream & Bread are but two of the titles. Non-fiction reads include Defiant Courage: Norway s Longest WWII Escape and Silent Patriot: Norway s Highly Decorated WWII Soldier and Secret Agent. Fiction titles include four from the American Girls Collection, and several series by Lauraine Snelling: four from the Daughters of Blessing series, three from Home to Blessing, six from Red River of the North, and one from Song of Blessing. Among the Mystery titles are two by Jo Nesbø Cockroaches and The Redbreast ; and Detective Inspector Huss by Helene Tursten. I will be sending out an updated list of the library holdings next week. This is the title of an article in May s Westways magazine: A movement to end traffic fatalities is catching on in America, by Doug Lansky. I was unable to find the article online, but found this website which tells about this Swedish approach to road safety: (a Swedish government website) see below. In the World Roundup by Jason Urbanus in the November/December 2017 issue of Archaeology magazine, was the following - Germany: Today, Norwegiancaught cod is a commodity shipped around the world. Apparently, it was popular some 1,000 years ago, too, when Viking traders transported freeze-dried cod around Europe. DNA testing of fish remains from the Viking Age ( ) site of Haithabu indicates that they belonged to an Arctic population known to have lived exclusively off the coast of northern Norway, 1,000 miles away. This find predates the earliest known archaeological or historical evidence for the export of dried cod by several hundred years. 4

Flåm, Norway by Phyllis Audiss Our ship sailed up the Sognefjord on our way to the town of Flåm. This was the starting point for our trip on the Flamsbama railway that goes to Myrdal, 20.

We traveled through the world s deepest fjord and then up the mountain, with views of rivers, waterfalls, and the tiny towns along the way.

The 20k track goes through 20 tunnels (some excavated by hand). There was a stop at one of the tunnels for the Kjosfossen (Fos Waterfall).

5 Flåm, Norway by Phyllis Audiss Our ship sailed up the Sognefjord on our way to the town of Flåm. This was the starting point for our trip on the Flamsbama railway that goes to Myrdal, kilometers (12.5 miles) up a steep mountain side meters (2833 feet) high. The entire trip from Flåm to Myrdal takes approximately two hours. We traveled through the world s deepest fjord and then up the mountain, with views of rivers, waterfalls, and the tiny towns along the way. It was a major challenge for railway engineers to build the track from the Myrdal Plateau down the steep mountain to the bottom of the Flåm Valley. This track was laid between 1936 and The 20k track goes through 20 tunnels (some excavated by hand). There was a stop at one of the tunnels for the Kjosfossen (Fos Waterfall). We were warned to watch out for our husbands as there was a Huldra reported to be in this area. A Huldra is an elusive and seductive creature of the forest. In Scandinavian mythology, it is a woman who is stunningly beautiful, with long hair; though from behind she is hollow like the trunk of an old tree trunk and has an animal s tail. The Huldra use their seductive charm to lure young men into their caves where they are kept as slaves, lovers, or worse. If she can get married in a church, her tail falls off and she becomes human. I wanted to see the Huldra, so got off the train to look for her. The waterfall was beautiful, but the spray was so strong that we were worried about our cameras getting wet. We were completely soaked, so didn t stay long. And worse, we didn t see a Huldra. About one kilometer from Myrdal, at Vatnahalsen, we stopped at the hotel. They offered us coffee and waffles at this stop. We were there for about one hour, long enough to have our snack, shop (I purchased a hat), and wander around the grounds. It was extremely cold and could see patches of snow on the ground. When we stopped at Kjosfossen again on the way back, I gave it another try. And there she was, dancing in the rocks at the side of the waterfall. It was worth the wet to get a quick shot of her. Back to Flåm, there were stores, cafés, and a museum. A quick trip through the museum and a look through the stores, and we were ready to return to the ship. The railway between Flåm and Myrdal is considered one of the world s top railway routes. And the little village of Flåm (which means little place between steep mountains) is very picturesque. It has become a hub for travelers wanting to experience the fjords, mountains, and waterfalls of Norway. 6
