In The Breeze Special ND Launch Edition Issue! August 2015 Official Newsletter of the Bluebonnet MX-5 Miata Club Still Free! Every Time Your Dealer Calls ND s From Heaven If Old Blue eyes were alive today, he just might be singing that to some of our members as no less than five of our members were notified their much awaited ND MX-5 s were in! What made it even sweeter for these folks is that most of the dealers had little or no idea when they would arrive! I m wondering how that could be! Believe it or not, the first to get their hands on this snappy new offering from Mazda was our own Dorothy Woods. Living in Midland now, David and Dorothy picked up their Launch Edition this past Saturday. Dorothy was like a child at Christmas time and who could blame her? The wait was killing everyone, even those of us that didn t order one! And next (to my knowledge), Paul Wilson, one of our dual Bluebonnet/Tejas members took delivery of his new LE today. I stopped by North Park this morning at 10:30 because I was curious about when they were getting their Launch Editions. Brian Willeford replied, George, I wish I knew, my contact in Houston says he has no idea where they are. Hmmm.strange. ONE HOUR later, he texts me a picture of three LE s on a truck that just rolled into the dealership. Geez...talk about the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing! So, I did what any good newsletter editor would do, I scrambled over there to see them! They were off the truck and in the holding lot as seen below. So, I decided to stop by after work and I was given an up close and personal tour of Pat Franklin s new car! She and David Hamilton will be getting theirs tomorrow morning, or, as you read this., this morning! And this afternoon.? I get a text that Don and Judi Privett were on their way to their dealer to get theirs! Wowza! ND s from heaven indeed! So, finally the wait is over. I know all of the hub bub has been nerve wracking for these happy owners, but I m sure the wait was worth it. Congratulations to all of you and we re all looking forward to seeing them tonight!!! Dorothy Woods takes delivery of her new ride in Midland last Saturday! Okay, now, what does this do? The truck finally arrives at North Park Mazda with five shiny Launch Editions! I got a sneak peek at Pat Franklin s new car at North Park Mazda. It s gorgeous! And doesn t Paul Wilson look proud in his new LE! Now there is a girl that loves her new car! Goodnight, Dorothy.

AUGUST 2015 PAGE 3 Velocity Read As I sit down this summer Sunday evening, I just pasted our president s message and was again assured we have a good man at the helm. An accomplished writer, he has skills aplenty! Good work, Mark. Okay, is it hot enough for you all? Well, as hot as it is weather-wise, it s not as hot as the news of Dorothy and David Woods, members living in Midland, getting the first Launch Edition ND this past Saturday. North Park still has no news on when they ll be getting Pat Franklin s and the Hamilton s LE s. We ll just have to wait! Dorothy was in communication with many of us Saturday via text messages, complete with photos, all day and we were all very excited for her. More about her and her new car is front page material in this edition! As Mark so eloquently explained about the dog days of summer, the good news is we re almost over that period of weather! While there are two runs in August, those will be closely followed by our run out to New Mexico. I m excited and thrilled with the growing list of attendees! We ll have folks from Houston, Dallas, Tyler and Victoria as well as the usual suspects of our membership! And I m also happy to report almost all monies needed for t-shirts and food has been collected! Thanks to everyone! I can t begin to thank so many that are pitching in this year on the HFTM 5 trip. My heart swells with pride that so many have helped me with collecting money, goody bags, things for those bags, printed material, trip planning, others helping me lead runs out there...the list goes on and on! Thanks a million times! If I may state one important reminder about our meet up location, Haby s in Castroville. Each morning they do a land office business and that Thursday morning will be no exception. Please...do NOT park in the lot the bakery occupies. Just before that is another lot that belongs to them at which we can line up. And while I m at it, there will be two groups leaving Haby s. The first, led by Mark Hungerman will be what I m calling the Express Group. They ll be making the same pit stops, but after the Pecos River Bridge stop, they won t be making the usual points of interest stops that I prefer to stop to visit. Yes, I ll be leading a second group, the Meanderer s, for those that think it s all about the journey, not the destination. I know many of you will have itchy britches and will line up behind Mark and that s just fine. We ll all get to Alpine (our first night s stop) about the same time when it s all said and done. I know a certain young lady that may be asking to ride in the first group...ahem...she knows who she is. Oh, well. Zoom Zoom! George Lucas, Editor President s Message It s the Dog Days of summer, in a major way. Dog Days is the name for the most sultry period of summer, from about July 3 to Aug. 11. Named in early times by observers in countries bordering the Mediterranean, the period was reckoned as extending from 20 days before to 20 days after the conjunction of Sirius (the dog star) and the sun. It s the period of least rain in the Northern hemisphere, meaning it s HOT. That means for your health and safety, it s very important for you to drink plenty of water and use sufficient sun block when you go on a run. It s also no coincidence that we have two runs in August that end after the sun goes down, the Bat cave run and the Twilight run. It gives us a bit of a break from the heat. Another break from the Heat will come in a little over a month when George leads us on our FIFTH annual Head for the Mountains romp out west, to some different mountains this year. The first day driving out to Alpine, will seem fairly normal, besides being Thursday instead of Friday. Day two is when we go down the rabbit hole like Alice, to an all new undiscovered driving playground. New Mexico is known as the Land of Enchantment, and I think you ll find it well named when all is said and done. Mark

PAGE 4 AUGUST 2015 Our Chisholm Trail Winery run lived up to its promise of something old, something new. We met in Comfort with fourteen cars going on the run, seven driven by long-time club members (something old) and seven driven by new or soon-to-join members (something new). The newbies said they appreciated the great roads and our seasoned members were amazed by roads they had not yet driven. We enjoyed some new twisties, very little traffic, nice scenery, wildlife sightings and loose livestock. I appreciated the size of the group as it was easy to keep us all together throughout the run. Many thanks to Mark who volunteered to sweep. We began the run by driving some new roads just east of Kerrville then onto a new back road toward Fredericksburg. Long-time club members as well as Kerrville locals had never been on the roads before. Having made our usual pit stop at the old Stripes gas station in Fredericksburg, we off again to the Longhorn Café in Harper. After an hour of new twisties we reached the restaurant. Not recognizing Harper, Dave was lost and asked for a bearing to some place he would recognize. I think he was thankful for having a GPS. The restaurant was ready for us and we were seated and served immediately. I don t think they are used to car clubs or groups of 22 people arriving at noon. Everyone was surprised at the variety of meals on the menu. Mark even ordered breakfast which they serve all day and Dave ordered a hamburger, go figure! The restaurant staff enjoyed checking out all the Miatas in the parking lot. After lunch we drove to the Chisholm Trail winery which is the western-most one on the 290 Wine Trail. One couple had been there years before (guess who) and were pleasantly surprised by the changes. For everyone else it was a new experience. We all enjoyed the tasting but missed the wood-fired pizza treat as the chef was absent off for the day. The honky-tonk atmosphere and the relaxed surroundings made for a pleasant afternoon. As we were leaving the skies opened up and we saw the first rains of the day. We were blessed with great weather for the run and everyone went topless including Mark who had some minor issue getting his top down. My next run, in October, to the Regency Bridge will also cover many new roads and may be the northern-most Saturday run the club has made. Hope to see you there. Ed Smith

PAGE 10 AUGUST 2015 Many of you are wondering how we re going to New Mexico, what we plan on doing on the way out, and more importantly what will we be doing when we get there! I think you won t be disappointed as we have lots of interesting places we re going and great roads too!. I say this hoping you understand we ve done all this planning from here in San Antonio. I will tell you, we had help from some great people there in the Cloudcroft-Alamogordo area giving us valuable input on these things. Below you see the route we ll be taking and on our website has a link to the detailed itinerary with pit stops on our website in the lower right hand corner of the home page. You still have time to decide whether or not you want a HFTM 5 t-shirt. They ll be white in color with the above logo on the back and for the first time, a ladies V-neck version is being offered. Prices for all is $16.50 each or two for $30. I m collecting the money for the shirts. If you still need to pay for the banquet dinner, Marilyn McCullen is collecting that. And lastly, if you are going out with us on Thursday, September 3rd, we have rooms available at our favorite digs, the Hampton Inn in Alpine for Thursday night. You will need to call them for reservations under Bluebonnet Miata Head for the Mountains. Call them directly at (432) and ask for Jennifer. If you have further questions or concerns, feel free to call me, George Lucas, at New Mexico here we come! Save the date! September 3rd*-4th through the 7th, Labor Day Weekend! New Mexico, here we come! Don t miss it! *Most are leaving on Thursday, the 3rd, however, if you want to make the trip in one day you can leave on the 4th.

AUGUST 2015 Photograpy by Chicky LeClair PAGE 11 What a great trip to Ft Davis and the Big Bend area ecently. Got up real early on Saturday to shoot the Milky Way but the low level clouds didn't cooperate. On my way back to Ft Davis, the sunrise made me stop and setup off the side of the road. Some morning fog was floating over the fields to add a little more character. Info: Nikon D7100, Tokina 11mm, ISO 100, f/9, 15 sec; 2/14/15, 7:00am. Miata Crazies At one time I wrote an article of how to align your behavior on a scale of where you were as a Miata enthusiast. You were either a casual looker or an enthusiastic observer. Then as you enjoyed your Miata more, you were drawn to the group and actually were filled with joy to be at a meeting and also to let the wind blow through your hair on a romp in the back roads. It is subtle and unknowing when you realize you are a true Miataphyte. You leap to your car, check the internet for the next event, gather with the group and hug your friends. You are now showing the die hard traits of someone who is hooked. But the next step will overcome you certainly soon. You now have two or three or perhaps have achieved four Miatas and you do not even know how you can drive but one at a time!! The club is working on that twelve step program for that too. And we have been through all those steps. We even have gone into withdrawal when we sell one. Now we are down to ONE Miata and it is not even a NEW one. But it will do for now. What makes us so proud is that each of our two sons owns his very own Miata. See in the pictures. John has a 94 Black NA and a 91 Silverstone NA and then he bought one to fix up and sell 95 Montego Blue NA. One he owns is for spare parts. Jay bought a much mistreated one 91 Red NA, but liked the economy part of the ride. He then sold it because he now was given from Mom and Dad, the 93 Red NA refurbished by Jack s Paint Place. It is with pure pleasure we have produced two more Miata enthusiasts who enjoy the ride as much as we. And we know there are others in the club who have produced such extended happiness as well. I think the kids now-a-days are getting smarter, so we should only share the fun that we of our age, are having. This is soooo much better than bowling or playing Canasta. Best, Judy and Paul Faulkner
