In The Breeze In The B August 2013 Official Newsletter of the Bluebonnet MX-5 Miata Club Still Free! Are YOU going with us to Alpine this year? This will be the third year we head for West Texas to escape our South Texas heat over the Labor Day weekend. If you missed the first two years, you really missed something special. Our first year, we had to don coats and warm up by the fire in the courtyard of the infamous Antelope Lodge. There won t be anymore Antelope Lodge, but the temperatures in the Alpine-Fort Davis area are usually degrees cooler than here in San Antonio. The art work you see on this page represents our t-shirt design created by Judi Privett for this year. Similar to last year, but modified a bit, you will want to get yours this year as this year is the last year HFTM will be an annual event! HFTM IV will be in 2015! This years t-shirts will be sky blue in color and go on sale tonight! Price is $16.50 each or two for $30. Priced the same as last year, place your order now! The weekend s itinerary is on the website and hopefully no more changes will be made. The dinner on Sunday evening is the only dinner that a head count is required. So, if you re going, please let me know ASAP so I can give the numbers to our hosts in Lajitas! Thanks to the help of Dave Hamilton and Joe Knight, plans have been made to offer up lots of new adventures as well as the favorites from past years. On the day we go to Lajitas, we ll be making about four separate stops that you'll want to get those cameras out for some really cool stops. Our host hotel is the Hampton Inn in Alpine. If you haven t made your reservations, call them and ask for the special Bluebonnet price. Centrally located, Alpine will be our hub for all our activities. Other things available are a trip to Balmoreah, the McDonald Observatory, the famous Marfa Lights, Prada Marfa, Playboy Marfa and of course, the Balloon Bash! I hope you ll join us, I think it s one of the most fun trips we take on a semi regular basis all year. You ll be glad you did. Below are a few memories from past years:

AUGUST 2013 Velocity Read PAGE 3 Yes, I know, it s hot and muggy. Too hot for most of us to enjoy top down driving even! And this summer has already been a busy one! And August holds no less than four more runs or events. I remain excited because I know at the end of August we ll all be heading for the cooler climes of our own West Texas mountains! I ll admit, it s my favorite run of the year because it comes at such a time that we re all ready to cool off! As I said August will also be full with a Sundaes on Monday and a new run, both hosted by Mark Hungerman. And let s not forget George Briscoe s Bat Cave Run. I m contemplating another You Cruise, You Lose run as well. I m hoping more of you get motivated to join the Tejas club at the Statewide Round Up held in November. The biggest Miata event of the year, San Marcos is the headquarters for this years Round Up. The real jewel of that event will be the option to drive the Harris Hill track near San Marcos. If you haven t ever driven on a real road track, you ll certainly not want to miss that. Normally a charge, at the Statewide, it ll be free! Get to really know your car by driving the Harris Hill track. If driving that track doesn t appeal to you, you may want to go on one of the runs being offered over the weekend. Or, volunteer to help out with the many other activities like the funcana. I plan on helping out with that event as it s one of the most fun things there is. Keep cool this summer and I ll see you on the roads! Zoom Zoom! George Lucas, Editor The Tejas Miata Club Proudly Presents 2013 Texas Miata Round Up In San Marcos, Texas October 31st-November 3rd Comfort Suites in San Marcos is the host hotel with a contracted rate of $99.00 per night. Mention Miata Round Up when making your reservation to get the discount. For more details and full event line up, go to
PAGE 4 AUGUST 2013 SHORT RUN (Hills and Dales) led by Paul Faulkner on This could be called acute run or a cute little run; however you wish to call it. We met at Security Bank and Trust behind the Chevron on Hwy 87 [Comfort]. That was a great place to meet and we even had a shaded front porch. Nine cars came to fill the parking lot and we grouped for a romp around Comfort, through downtown Center point, and on to the countryside of Ranch Road 480. We cruised between the hills and dells as a slow waltz where the donkies roam. Elm Pass Rd. was halfway: old road and new pavement which equals NICE. The rhythm of the road was all good and made me feel like Cloud 9, Cloud 9 Rd., that is. There was a hiccup with a short duration OTM roadblock. Someone reported that was called TRASH in Arkansas. We zoomed by in Bandera noting by signs that July 27 was Ranch Rodeo weekend. Bet that ground will be full of equines soon. Of course more to love of the day was a fabulous stop at the Apple Store for a something- apple, as turnover or cold apple ice cream. They must have known we were coming because they had enough apple turnovers ready for all of us. YUM!!!! Then a stint on Hwy 16 led us toward Kerrville. We wound up and down the Texas mountain behind a SLOW OTM, very painful. We were the Miatas on parade, it seemed. Note two places worthy of looking up on the internet just for area knowledge: Koyote Ranch and Escondida. From there we turned on Hwy 173 and went by Jack and Candy Holbrook s place. We buzzed them from the highway, Miata style. We were in phone contact and waved. I thought I saw a hand waving in the distance. Best to them! We then went directly to Camp Verde for a stopped treat and end of the run. It was a fun day to just let your hair down. Best! J AND P
AUGUST 2013 PAGE 5 Lunar Zoomers Summer Fun While this month s Lunar Zoomer dinner location had no food to offer, bring your own brown bag was the order of the evening. Besides, when you meet at a historic venue like Cool Crest Miniature Golf, who needs food? On a balmy summer evening, a dozen of us met to enjoy the newly reopened Cool Crest. After a long period of closure, Cool Crest recently reopened to rave reviews and we weren t disappointed at the course was beautifully reconditioned with ponds, waterfalls and 36 holes of very difficult miniature golf hazards! Everyone had a great time and we all look forward to returning when the weather cools down a bit!
PAGE 6 AUGUST 2013 Determined to have a summer picnic, I got permission from Betty Fields to go forward with picnic plans as she was tied up with other things. So, that s exactly what I did. After securing our old spot in Landa Park, I began to make arrangements for food and was fortunate enough to get lots of volunteers to help me with the preparations. Dave Hamilton graciously offered to lead the group to the park. Winding through some hill country roads, I was excited to see 22 Miatas full of hungry people arrive at the park right on time. Thanks, Dave! Now, I m admitting right off that there probably wouldn t have been anything to eat if it hadn t been for Rohm Thompson. He arrived early to help, and he calmly watched me fumble with the charcoal in the park s BBQ grill. I emphasized calmly because Rohm is very diplomatic when offering advice. I backed off and watched him build a fire in about 10 minutes. I think I spent 30 minutes with no luck at all. I got my come-uppin s regarding building a fire. Thanks, Rohm! Thanks also to everyone that showed up early, especially Marcia Carlow, who prepared the condiments of lettuce, pickles and onions. Others also showed up with food, but I regret to say, I never saw who brought what. In fact, I barely got anything to eat as I was consumed with getting the food to the table. Thanks to everyone that brought food. A special thanks goes to Pat O Docharty and Kate from his Baskin-Robbins store as he provided ice cream for one of our desserts. What could be better than ice cream on a hot summer day? Also thanks to whomever brought the games of bag toss and washer toss. I brought the croquet, but it was too hot to play that. I think everyone had fun playing the other games though.
