He is interested in starting a monthly meeting in Lucerne, Clearlake Oaks and Spring Valley. Each area would have a representative and attend all the meetings and then report back to their area. Sounds like a great idea and a great way for Jim to be involved with the needs of his district. Please plan on attending. A Word about Our Safety After the most recent storms, a pine tree fell down and blocked Spring Valley Road for some time. If you should happen to see the possibility of a repeat if this occurrence, please alert authorities! Be sure to be aware of your surroundings at all times! 4 Our President s Message Hello Neighbors, Hope all are well and happy and keeping your New Year's resolutions. This month will be the last event that this board does except for the March breakfast. It seems the community has spoken and does not want to have a St. Patrick's day celebration either. Feb. 14th will be our Valentines breakfast with berry crepes as the special. Feb. 20 will be our Murder Mystery Dinner. RSVP if you want to attend that. Feb. we will be asking for a nominating committee to try and get SVLPOA members who want to sit on the board for next year. Pres, Vice Pres, and Treas. must be property owners and Secretary and Building Coordinator can be renters. You must be a member by Feb. 18th in order to vote at the Mar. 17th meeting. Win Carey will be taking over the newsletter. Our Feb. 18th general meeting we will be having Jim Steele as a guest speaker. The meeting starts at 6:30 pm so come listen to what he has to say about our district. Hope to see you at the Feb. 14th breakfast when you can also pay SVLPOA membership dues and get your ticket for the murder mystery dinner. Gayle Christian, President MURDER MYSTERY DINNER Feb. 20 will be the date for our "Murder on Bourbon Street" mystery dinner. It is set at "Fat Tuesdays" pub in New Orleans just before Mardi Gras. You will receive information when you arrive and throughout the evening with clues to help you solve this crime. Our suspects will be in costume and will be talking with guests. Ask them questions to try and figure out which one of them committed this shocking murder. We will be having Jambalaya along with some wonderful Cajun appetizers, sides and desserts. Also, fried chicken for those who like it on the milder side. Tickets are $10.00 each for dinner and the show. Bar opens at 4:30. Appetizers and clues will start at 5:00. 5 CAMPGROUND NEWS by Joe Welz, Campground Committee Our greenbelt and what is known as Helen Mitcham Park campground is 200 to 300 acres and follows along Wolf Creek and the North fork of Cache Creek. What is u-knee-ic about this area is that it has been left to grow naturally for about 50 years, and has developed some beautiful areas displaying some ancient species of Valley Oak, red willow, and black cottonwood. Many forms of life call Spring Valley home and, as good stewards of the land, we the people of Spring Valley should care for this land - always planning for the future and never forgetting the past. People have been living along these creeks for about 13,000 years. We should all respect our home and our greenbelt. Lately there has been some dumping going on in this area. Cabinets from inside a camper or trailer were left by the dam, and some broken concrete was left in the campground. Both these items would be a $5 charge at the dump. Also, there is someone on an ATV misbehaving. Please stay on the existing trails. Then there are the mud bogging trucks covered in mud driving on our paved roads. The areas where they are mud bogging are destroyed, trenches are dug, and the areas become impassible because one or two people want to play this game. We all are paying to fix what they destroy. Finally, the lock on the campground gate was broken, and replaced. It was broken again. Seems "funny" that a new lock would break that fast. Oh, well. Til next time, Joe G. Welz Lake Recovery News by Win Cary, Lake Recovery Committee HOORAY!! After many years of hard work by Mark Currier, the Special District staff, and the Lake Recovery volunteers, all permits have been issued to start work on the Spring Valley Lake project. During the rainy season the Lake Recovery volunteers will be working on cutting trees and brush, and burning excess vegetation. The people living along Wolf Creek in the lake area can expect sawing noise and clean-up crews behind their homes. All fires will be permitted as required, and will be controlled burns. To volunteer to help with this work, please call Mark Currier at Mark Currier and Mark Dellinger of Special Districts will meet with Mr. Van Pelt by the end of January to go over hydrology and engineering plans and compose a contract for gravel removal between Lake County and Mr. Van Pelt. The trucks will be moving through our community this summer, for sure! Page 5

6 Fires, Floods and Mud Slides Oh My by Peggy O Day, CSA2 Safety Chair Seasons change as do circumstances, you can rake up your leaves before the rain washes them into the culverts and creates a small lake in your front yard or back yard. It s a lot harder when you have your boots and raincoat on out in the rain digging through the running water trying to remove the leaves, twigs and debris before it overfills the ditch and runs into your garage. Oh My. If you own or rent property next to a ditch or stream, please do your part by removing debris and vegetation growing on the stream bottom. Vegetation growing on the stream banks should be left because it reduces erosion by holding the soil in place with its roots. As the seasons change, take pride in your home whether you own it or rent it, it s your home. This is a good practice to include your family; some the benefits are communication, exercise and knowledge of the weather patterns and seasons. Flooding is hazardous: The force of moving water or waves can destroy a building. Slow moving flood waters can knock people over or float a car. Even standing water can float a building, collapse basement walls, or buckle a concrete floor. Water-soaked contents, such as carpeting, clothing, upholstered furniture, and mattresses may have to be thrown away after a flood. Some items, such as photographs and heirlooms, may never be restored to their original condition. Floodwaters are not clean: floods carry mud, farm chemicals, road oil, and other noxious substances that cause health hazards. The impact of a flood, cleaning up, making repairs, and the personal losses can cause great stress to you, your family, and your finances. If your neighbor can t physically get outside to clean out their ditch contribute your skills and awareness as this will protect your home as well as your community. Here s to another resident giving back and making our community a better place one season at a time. RAND PAUL: It's none of our business why the chicken crossed the road. NANCY PELOSI: We will have to wait until the chicken crosses the road to see what it says. CARLY FIORINA: Hillary Clinton lied about why the chicken crossed the road. BRIAN WILLIAMS: I crossed the road with the chicken. BEN CARSON: This isn't brain surgery. So why did the chicken cross the road? SARAH PALIN: The chicken crossed the road because, gosh-darn it, he's a maverick! BARACK OBAMA: Let me be perfectly clear, if the chickens like their eggs they can keep their eggs. No chicken will be required to cross the road to surrender her eggs. Period. HILLARY CLINTON: What difference at this point does it make why the chicken crossed the road? GEORGE W. BUSH: We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road or not. The chicken is either with us or against us. There is no middle ground here. BILL CLINTON: I did not cross the road with that chicken. AL GORE: I invented the chicken. AL SHARPTON: Why are all the chickens white? DR. PHIL: The problem we have here is that this chicken won't realize that he must first deal with the problem on this side of the road before it goes after the problem on the other side of the road. What we need to do is help him realize how stupid he is acting by not taking on his current problems before adding any new problems. OPRAH: I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why he wants to cross the road so badly. So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I'm going to give this chicken a NEW CAR so that he can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens. ANDERSON COOPER: We have reason to believe there is a chicken, but we have not yet been allowed to have access to the other side of the road. ERNEST HEMINGWAY: To die in the rain, alone. GRANDPA: In my day we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Somebody told us the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough for us.
