Your Committee for 2015/2016 3

Stable Talk John and Christine Lipanovich Ph or A new year, with some committee changes, is now underway. The Tuakau Shed Run was the first event of the New Year and despite a rainy start, later to clear, attracted over 50 cars. Tony will keep us updated on all future events and I m sure you agree he has developed a very good system. It is time to start making some long term plans if you intend to have your car judged at our show in September. REMEMBER helpful hints in preparing your car are available on the nzmustang.com website under technical. A plug, also, for the run Christine and I are organising early August. Named The Lost Out West Run. The run will include questions and finish at a yet to be finalised venue with various prizes up for grabs. s from Tony will provide more info in the next few weeks. Together with the Fish and Chip run to Snells Beach there should be something for everyone in the coming weeks. See you there. John 4

President s Report for A.G.M. I am not sure where the year has gone to. This time last year I had just stepped off of a flight from the States to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of Mustang to be elected as your president. Now that year has gone. Last year a new look committee was elected and I do hope that as members you have enjoyed the calendar of events that have been organised. I know that the new committee took on board suggestions made by you and they have worked very hard to deliver an interesting and varied programme. I would like to thank all of the committee for their hard work and for producing some top notch events. I would also like to thank members who have stuck up their hand to be involved in organising and running events and this includes the ladies who have helped Daphne with the suppers. Whenever we have had a BBQ there has been no shortage of what can I do to help and would you like me to do this. To Diana and Craig who have organised events but have also run the monthly raffle and lucky number draw. Thanks and we look forward to you continuing in this role. I know you enjoy the people part of interacting with this great group of people. This past year due to membership numbers reaching over 300, communication of events is very important and I would like to thank Tony Powell for the time he has put into keeping everyone up to speed through the system. Almost everyone is on now and our members appear to be opening more than the expected norm of these. Hopefully as members get more used to getting an from the club we will be able to reach more of you. 5

During the year we have organised quite a number of events, some are the tried and tested, while others have been new. Feedback is always appreciated as it helps plan for the future. Not all events will be a total success, but from the numbers attending we believe we have been successful. The year started with the traditional fish n chip run to Kaiaua and while the weather was wet, we had a record turnout. The annual quiz night was well attended and new champions were crowned. We were involved at the CRC Speedshow on the Meguiars stand to celebrate 50 years of Mustang. Thanks to those who allowed their cars to be displayed. We took a trip to Hamilton for the Henry Ford Memorial Day and weather was perfect. We have started some regular breakfast meetings with informal runs afterwards. Some of these have included a shed run and picnic while others have been just a drive after coffee. We have had visits off site to CARS in Pukekohe and Meguiars in East Tamaki. The annual Car Show was held at Te Pai again and while numbers were slightly down we tried a new layout which looked great. We also have to thank our sponsors for their support of the annual show. The prize giving was a similar format as past years, but a different venue. This year we produced a new trophy and personalised them by having the members name engraved. From the car show gate takings we made a donation to Special Olympics NZ of just over $1,000. The annual Poker run was well attended with over 100 people. The Tulip run was another big success. We have also supported our neighbouring clubs with their events. The Franklin Lights run and diner at the White Lady was well received again despite the weather. The Xmas BBQ was held at a new location and while the weather threatened, it stayed fine. This was a great day for the families including children and grand children. Convention was in Christchurch and we were well represented. Canterbury put on a fantastic 4 days incorporating the 50 th anniversary. We have had some interesting speakers come to club night including James Everett and John de Vere Ellery. Members have made their cars available to help with special occasions for the public, whether it was a wedding, anniversary, birthday or bucket list item. For some who took a ride their own life has been dealt a rough hand of cards through illness. To receive letters of thanks and appreciation for the small amount of time it takes to help someone is something to experience. 6

Concours 2015 was another huge effort of man power but the organisers were impressed again with our management and manning of the day. Again our teams competed hard coming away with 2 nd and 3rd spots. This event has earned us $8,000 and so helps with the running of various events. This was followed by a thank you BBQ at our house and it was great to see the front yard and driveway full of beautiful Mustangs. The Vintage Speedway event saw a new group of want to be racers attend and they had a ball. We had another good attendance at the All Ford Day at Smales Farm. The annual Galaxy of Cars was a bit of a last minute event but still well attended with proceeds going to a worthwhile cause. We also attended a Targa event where we drove the circuit and then displayed the cars. The weekend away tour went to Waitangi this time and even though it was the weekend of a cyclone, it was a great time away. It was an opportunity to involve our Northland members. When you start to look at all the club has organised, you have to be amazed that this is all put together by volunteers who are passionate about Mustang s but also get a buzz in putting together something which others enjoy, so don t be shy in telling them what a great time you had on an event. The quality of magazine put together by John and Chris Lipanovich is one of the best car club magazines probably in all of NZ. They do a professional job so keep supporting them with articles and member profiles. This year we have started building more of a relationship with Ford NZ and the Auckland dealers. This is probably due to the release of the 2015 right hand drive Mustang due here at the end of the year, but getting them on board again will benefit us and them. They have been very impressed with our magazine and how as a club we run things, professional yet still with the aim of having fun. I do hope as we get closer to the launch of the new car we can work more together on some events. Whatever happens at tonight s AGM, I have really enjoyed this past year. I would like to say in closing a big, big thank you to Jackie who has supported me in this role...ian 7

Below is a copy of the thank you letter that came through for Ian Langley after Leonie contacted the club to take her husband Ray for a ride in a Mustang. Hi Tony Rays Dream Comes True Well I would like to say what a couple of lovely hours my husband had for his ride in Ian s beautiful car. It was such a surprise I think he was actually speechless!! They had a great time and could not ask for a better day on Sunday to drive around the waterfront and cruise back through Coatesville to come back home. Ian is such a lovely man and by the time Ray got home he was almost convinced to wanting to buy one. That is another story. We have some lovely photos and I know my husband will remember it for a long time. Thank you so much again for your help and I would recommend Ian to any body what more can you say about the car absolute stunner. Well take care and good luck. Regards Leonie 10

Scott Family Profile Hi AMOC members, we are the Scott family, Craig, Jo & Sloan (our 3yr old daughter). We have been AMOC members for about 4 years. We have recently sold our black 2005 GT Premium Convertible to purchase our new Mustang, a 2011 Shelby GT500 which we have now owned a couple of months. A little history: The Shelby was purchased new by Trevor & Wendy Pointon (also AM- OC members), they purchased it from Gurley Leep Ford in Indiana 4 years ago. Specs: It's a 2011 Shelby GT500 SVT which has the 820a performance package with alloy engine. Aftermarket mods include suspension, supercharger, pulley upgrades, induction throttle body etc. We appreciate the public voting for the Shelby at the All Ford Day at Smales Farm in April where it won People's Choice Award (& we'd like to share the award with Trevor & Wendy). 13

Tuakau Shed Run On awakening at some silly hour on Sunday Morning I was only to be greeted by a very wet day. So I had thought to myself that the numbers of cars attending may have been down. The 10am meeting point at Bombay Truck Shop went well, with approximately 55 Mustangs turning out - one was even from Whangarei (new shape.) After a quick photo shoot and briefing by myself, we were on our way...down the old Great South Road where we reassembled. The queue from down the front looked amazing. A call from Tail End Charlie (Wayne Lack) and we carried on around the corner to Shed Number 1. Five different sheds were looked through and to me the highlight was the Hugh Hefner Car and the home build car - the Imac Chrysler and then onto the last shed where there was an old rusty pickup truck. There was an amazing amount of interest shown and 1½ hours later after the presentation from Ian we set off to Shed Number 2 Off we set through the main street of Tuakau, a quick left then right and we were there. This large shed too was filled with very interesting model cars. Model T Ford, Model A Fords, Jaguars and an Austin 7. One Austin 7 owner has owned it since he was 18 years old (very special car) and there was also plenty of memorabilia and a loaded fridge!!after a quick thank you and presentation from Ian the Pressy we were on our way to the Tuakau Cossy Club. On arrival I was very disappointed with the whole signing in bit and I have been advised that the club will be working on a better system for the future runs. The restaurant filled very quickly and kept the 4 chefs busy filling everyones orders. 14

In conclusion I would like to thank everyone for their attendance and I hope you had an enjoyable day and many thanks to Tony Powell, Wayne Lack and Photographer John. Your help was very appreciated. Considering the weather it just goes to show that our club certainly does not lack any SPIRIT!!...See you all soon.warren & Shirley Hamlin 1. 15

Anzac Weekend Club Competition between Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato Whangamata was the venue for the Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty inter club trophy competition and get together. Christine and I were charged with organising activities at Whangamata and enlisted the services of Whangamata Club Manager Gavin Anton. Gavin would look after the hospitality aspect of the day while we would devise a series of competitions in an endeavour to bring the trophy back to Auckland. We travelled to Whanga on the Friday night and participated in the Anzac parade on the Saturday. The weather cleared in time for the parade but the showers returned and things were not looking good for the Sunday. Much to our delight the sun came out to play on Sunday and the sixty three Mustangs made a great sight in the club carpark. Most cars arrived by 11.30am and after socialising in the car park everyone made their way into the club for the most important business of the trophy competition...continued on p.21 18

After having met a few of those Waikato and Bay of Plenty boys we were glad at having chosen a more, shall we say, Metrosexual format for the competition. First was a test (sourced off the internet) of timing, balance and teamwork. Having found this on the internet and doubting its complexities Christine enlisted some neighbours help in a trial run. It was difficult! Eight members from each club, two were to act as judges of another club, leaving six to extend a forefinger under the hula hoop while standing in a circle around it. They then had to get it to the floor as quickly as possible without anyones finger losing contact. Auckland were fantastic, straight down and earning the top of 10 points. Waikato and Bay of Pleanty had to go again with Bay of Plenty taking the second spot. The next task required one male from each club having to sew a button on a vest to fit an existing button hole. Waikato won this (judged by a bar staff member) with our own Ken Smith a very courageous second. What was supposed to be the final test entailed two men and one woman from each club. One man, in our case, Barry McCrystal, sat in a chair while the other, Ian Waters, with the advice of Jacqui set about applying make-up. 21

This again was judged by a bar staff member, with Waikato winning by the narrowest of margins. Auckland second and Bay Of Plenty third. After the three events we had a tie with Auckland and Waikato tied on 26 and Bay of Plenty (who will host next year) in third. It all came down to the quoits. After two rounds Ashley Sim thrust himself into AMOC hero status with a final round of 4 quoits to seal the victory for Auckland. The New Years Honours list could have a surprise this year! With the trophy safely in Ians hands, it was time for lunch. 22

The Catering Staff at the club did a great job with the $20 buffet, good quality and variety and even a dessert. Towards the end of lunch the final prize giving took place with Jacqui Waters taking out the best accessory with a rather unique piece of head wear and Paul Stops from Bay of Plenty scooping the mens shirt prize. Club Manager Gavin had checked out the car park and picked his car of the day and two runner ups. Mike Adams and Bob Anderson from Waikato were the two runner ups and received MTA vouchers with Dave Aucamp s black beauty selected as car of the day. Dave received a gift pack, voucher and an engraved trophy supplied and presented by Gavin. A big thank you to Gavin and the staff of the Whangamata club and all who came and participated in the fun and spirit of the days events. We are certainly looking forward to next year to see what Bay of plenty can come up with. John and Christine 23

History of a Life AMOC Member This profile is about one of AMOC s Life members and his wife. Shaun and Barbara Jackson. Ever since Shaun can remember he has always liked cars. Shaun likes to fit accessories to their cars to make them look sporty. The photos in this article will prove that. Shaun and Barbara have lived in Tuakau most of their lives. Shaun since he was 10 years old and Barb since she was 4. They are both the same age, only six months or so between them. Shaun has known Barb since they were at school. He was very good friends with Barb s brother. Hmmm. Shaun s first car was an early model Mini 850cc engine (what power). Yes, there is a list of them. His next car, a 1970 MK1 Ford Escort Van. (Well he got that right. The Ford part.) It had 1300cc engine (a bit more power). Can you see where this is going. He added mag wheels, flared guards, GT dash and carpet in the back. (His Shaggin Wagon he called it.) Barb was never interested in cars. Anyway Barb went overseas for about a year in His next car was a 1975 Holden Torana which of course he kitted out. Put a worked 186ci in it and turned it into a replica SLR5000. Barb came back from overseas, cracked the whip and they were married in 1988 only being 20 years old. Barb didn't get her drivers licence until she was 30. They sold the Torana and bought another great car. A 1982 SLX six cylinder Holden Commodore (lovely cars aren t they) Don t you just love Holdens. 26

One day Shaun Barb and her mom were going to help Barb s sister to move house. They were in the SLX Commodore. Shaun said he had a stop to make on the way first. A Car Dealers Yard. Hmmm (the plan was hatched). Shaun looked at cars for so long that Barb and her mum left him there and continued on to Barb s sisters place. Shaun was left alone in the Dealers yard. Yummy! Anyway after druelling around in amongst the toys for most of the day their next car (well what did you expect) was a 1985 Holden Calais, 5.0 V8. No joke. This was a nice car, leather interior etc. In 1990 the National Mustang Convention was in Auckland on Labour Weekend. Shaun and Barb went to the car show, along with Shaun s parents, Jim and Jan (They owned a 69 Mach 1). All joined AMOC as members there and then. At that stage Shaun and Barb already owned a Mustang, a 1970 hardtop. Shaun obtained this car 2 months prior. Shaun got this car off his mom. Well I ll tell you how this came about. Shaun I ll use Shauns name because this was all Shaun. He asked Jan (his mum) if she would swap the 1970 hardtop for their Holden Calais. Well the answer was no! Well that wasn't the end of it, as you well know. After days and weeks of asking, asking asking, then it turned to begging and begging Jan finally got fed up with him and gave in and threw the keys at him. Well by Jingers there was Shaun with a big smile on his face and keys to their first Mustang. Now the Story starts! They sold it after a year a bought a 1970 Sportroof, through Jeka Enterprises in Plunket Avenue Manukau. The car was in bits. It had been Panelbeaten and primed ready for paint. Shaun stripped the interior, sent it to a mechanic to take the engine out and then to a paint shop to be painted red. After 2 years they sold it. Whats new! Well heres something. At the 2015 AMOC AGM in May this year, a new member joined. When it was asked if there are any new members and if they would stand up and introduce themselves and what car they have a new member stood up and the car that he has is Shauns old 1970 red sportsroof. Their next car was a Fox Body, 1983 GTHO T5 Hatchback. They bought this car of Murray Urguhart who was an AMOC member at the time and past President. By the time Shaun did his special car show treatment on it and added a few accessories it was No1 in its class (82-93 GT) in NZ for the 11½ years they owned this car. There wasn't much wrong with it to start with. 27

In that same period they bought a `1987 hatch which they kept for 2 years. In 2001 they went to the Canterbury convention in Christchurch in the 87 hatch. This car was fuel injected. After leaving Auckland with a full tank of fuel and topping up at Bulls it took $30. This tank got them to Christchurch saw them buying a 96 GT which needed to be converted to right hand drive. Before that happened they bought a 94 GT which had already been converted. The 96 sat for a while then hey sold the 94 to pay for the conversion to the 96GT. But before that happened another 94 GT owner knocked on their door. This car was still left hand drive and did not need to be converted. It was black, accessories were added of course, tail lights, mags, a wide silver stripe down the centre of the car from front to back, engine bay dress up kit and detailed with a magnifying glass. They sold the 96 GT as it was. They owned the black 94 GT for 5 years. It was no 1 in its class for those 5 years they owned it Again they bought a 2005 GT imported. This is the car they own at the present. When I saw the 2005 GT at the AMOC Annual Car Show I wasn't surprised. I asked Shaun if he was going to pile accessories on this one too. Shaun said yeah nah, probably not. Hmmm. Well when I went to there place to interview them for the article for the Pony Express I looked at the 2005 and said Yeah Nah my foot. I looked at Shaun and he said You can say that every Mustang we own gets the car show treatment by Shaun. The accessories they have added include different tail lights, exhaust on order, sill scuff plates with lights inside them that come on when you open the doors, lights under the doors that come on as well and and hes cut a hole, yes in the bonnet and put a shaker on the engine. Hmmm gives me ideas. As was stated they joined in October Not long after Shaun was judging at AMOC Car Shows, under the wing of Bill Woods who was President in the years. He judged for as many years as I can remember, not only at AMOC Car Shows but also at National Conventions all over NZ. Even Shaun and I paired up a couple of times judging at conventions. Plus the last 4 or 5 years Shaun and Barb have been a judging team. Shaun has been a convenor of Judges for that many years and neither of us can remember when he hasn't been a convenor or judging. Has has been an advisor to the judging team, been on the AMOC Annual Car Show organising Committee countless times. They have both been on the organising committee when AMOC hosted the National Convention. 28

Shaun first served on the AMOC Management Committee in 93-94, again in 96-97, he was Vice President, stood down for a while. Back on again in for a year. Shaun was awarded Life Membership on 4th May 2012 at the AGM - well deserved - and he still hasn't finished. Then again back on the Committee in He was also a member Rep for about 10 years. Barb!! Havent forgotten about you. Barb served on several AMOC Sub Committees over the years as well as the same ones with Shaun, AMOC & Convention. She was Secretary on the Management Committee from years. They are not involved on any committees at present. Who knows, they could be again at some stage. Listed below are trophies and awards they have won over the years with their many cars. 19 National Convention Awards 23 AMOC Annual Car Show Awards 3 Drag Racing Awards 4 All Ford Day and Other Car Show Awards 2 Intermarque Concours de Elegance Awards A total of 51 Awards at present. Well that s about it from me on Shaun and Barbara Jackson. Enjoy reading. Neville Barton Club Historian 29
