Since 2002, the Skate Exchange has been giving out FREE gently used skates to the community. Throughout the year, people drop off their gently used skates at select locations across the City of Greater Sudbury. When winter comes around, these gently used skates are given out, on a first-come first served basis, during organized Skate Exchange events. If you wish, you can donate a pair of skates at the event however you do not have to donate in order to pick up a pair. As all of the skates are donated, the quantity and size available may vary throughout the Skate Exchange season. Why organize a skate exchange? The Skate Exchange promotes access to, and encourages free or low cost opportunities for, winter physical activity. How do I participate in a skate exchange? Come see us at the Skate Exchange trailer located near the ice pad by the Dowling Leisure Centre, on Saturday, January 25th. Let the Skate Exchange organizers and volunteer hosts know what size you need and if you want hockey or figure skates. You can then try them and see if they fit properly. Who can receive a FREE pair of gently used skates? Anybody! Children, adults (limited availability of adult-sized skates), community groups picking up skates for their members, schools, etc., can pick up a free pair of skates. When and where is the skate exchange? Saturday, January 25, 2014 from 9AM-1PM at the ice pad beside the Dowling Leisure Centre. Page 4 Page 9

5 The Story of Onaping Falls Robert P. Trott Chapter 20 History Book Now was the time to put it all together; Hardy Lower Townsite, Hardy Upper Townsite and Cartier Subdivision. One name was needed to weld it into one unit. Application was made to the Postal Service to open a post office Hardy. Up to now all mail came through Levack post Office. A letter from the authorities advised the Company that they would not establish a postal address named Hardy because it was too similar to postal addresses already allocated such as Hardy Landing, Hartly, Hartling, etc. A quick meeting resulted and the name Onaping was presented. This name was accepted by officials and from that time on, it all came together and the Town of Onaping was born. One other change of original plans was to take place at about this time. Possibly because of the use of Indian Names for lakes and rivers in the District, the first thoughts on street names was to use Indian words. A dictionary of Cree language was purchased and studied but the confusion of the different spellings of the same word and the inability to all agree on its pronunciation quickly dispensed with that idea, and the names of past and present company officials were used along with the names of local trees except Wickwas Street which was the only Indian name accepted. Map makers would have to revise their work and new maps from now on would have to show the Town of Onaping beginning January 1 st, On that date, the Improvement District of Onaping was incorporated as a municipality in the Province of Ontario by Order of the Ontario Municipal Board; a giant step from the planning of a new satellite town just a few years ago to its recognition as a vibrant community. Obviously many people helped to steer this new permanent town in adulthood. People like Dick Gill, Harold North, Don Lochead, Gordon Allen, H.J. Fraser, R. Wainwright, R.M. Oliver and coordinator Earle Jarvis must all of sensed a feeling of deep pride on this day. The swearing-in ritual, and the first meeting of the Board was held in the Toronto office of J.W.P. Cater, Minister of Municipal Affairs on February 8 th, Board of Trustees were: Chairman, E.G. Earl Jarvis; Vice Chairman, M.J. Mike Poupore; Member, T.V. Tom Flaherty Harold Bondett was later appointed Secretary-Treasurer. It was to a full, busy, first year of office. The Board of Trustees were also the Township School Area Board for Onaping. The Board of Health consisted of Chairman, E.G. Jarvis with T.V. Flaherty and Dr. H.G. Jalkotzy as members, and Harold Bondett, Secretary. A court of Revision had to be formed. The original members were, Chairman, J.J. Asselstine with members, Ralph Crawford and Norman Cooper. A Trench Inspector had to be appointed Harold Bondett received that honour; and so it went on to assemble all the small cogs that together form the machinery called a Municipality. Warren B. Rhude was Fire Chief and A.P. Regimbal, Police Sergeant. It is interesting to note, that the Community Club members at that time, Mrs. Steward, Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Thomson and Mrs. Ogle were, even in those days, had complaints about the teenage dances. Editor s note: Sentence structure and grammar and some spellings have not been corrected in order to keep the integrity of the text] BBQ If your group or organization would like to borrow the OFCAN portable BBQ for your event just let us know!
