Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum Rebuilding Maine History SHEEPSCOT STATION, PO BOX 242, ALNA, ME May / June 2016 Track workers descend the steep grade from Top of the Mountain toward their new worksite. Kudos to all of the volunteers who showed up and made the 2016 Spring Work Weekend another in the long history of successful and productive WW&F events. The work that was accomplished over three days (and the prelude) was just amazing. I had the pleasure of working with a great crew at the north end that laid 600 feet of track down the Mountain. Everyone worked hard, safely, and with great focus. I had a lot of details to coordinate to reach our track-laying goals, and the crew made my job much easier and a lot of fun. Thank you all! I had high hopes that we would make our 600-foot goal, and on Saturday I knew we had hit our stride. I had no doubt we d make it if the weather held and, sure enough, we got the last rails spiked and lined just as it started to rain on Sunday afternoon. It was also fun to watch the progress in the North Yard. Every time we came back for lunch or supper, we could see the yard looking better and better. By the end of the Spring Work Weekend Dana Deering weekend it looked fantastic! Rick s Magnificent Seven did an excellent job! I appreciate the old hands more than you can know, and I also want to thank the young fellows like Bryce, Dan, Joseph, and the young man whose name escapes me but whose grandfather works at Conway Scenic. You are the future of the WW&F, and I hope we are teaching you what you need to know so we can couple your enthusiasm to our experience and can haul the WW&F train into the future. I also want to recognize the two ladies who pitched right in and worked alongside the boys and put up with our attempts at humor. (We thought we were funny...) Thanks for taking such good care of the tie marking chalk and for making sure the bolts and spikes were waiting for us when we needed them. I had a great time, and it was good to see our friends from all over. Thank you all! Visit us at: join a discussion at Like us on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter.

Annual Meeting The 27 th annual meeting of the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum was held on Saturday, May 7 th, at the Percival House. Director candidates Roger Whitney, Dave Buczkowski, and Linda Zollers were re-elected. President s Report (Steve Zuppa) Steve Zuppa reported that the past year has been wonderfully successful. Historic locomotive Number 9 was restored to service. We received a shingle mill and may receive a sawmill. We ve been successful in our outreach efforts including Trip Advisor, Facebook, and Twitter. We ve completed construction of a car barn that will allow us to store all of our equipment under cover. We had a very successful Fall Work Weekend. Maine Narrow Gauge Railway and Museum donated a Bridgton & Harrison boxcar, number 67. During a wedding party held at the Museum, the guests constructed a replica of the Whitefield section house. We now use it for the original purpose, storing hand cars and other section maintenance equipment. Our Fall Family Festival was well attended, but was eclipsed by Victorian Christmas, which had a record attendance of There were two train sets run using three locomotives, and unlike other years there were never more than 20 people in line. Our newsletter featured its first color photo. We met our fundraising goal. Our dairy car exhibited in downtown Wiscasset achieved sufficient notice that it is now shown in Maine DOT plans for traffic revisions in that area. With the assistance of member loans, we purchased one and a half track-miles from the Kettle Moraine railroad. Ties will come from a New Hampshire guardrail post removal project. We have found defects in the boiler for Number 10 that will require a rebuild. We have launched the 21 Campaign to rebuild the boiler for Number 10 and then build a new boiler for a new locomotive, Number 11. We have sent out RFPs to concrete contractors to construct a 48-foot queen-post-truss turntable that will be a replica of that originally located in Wiscasset. Number 9 (Jason Lamontagne) Jason Lamontagne reported on Number 9, initially giving a two-word word answer, It s running. He went on to give some details about the boiler jacket, noted that the cab and tank were installed at the Fall Work Weekend, and that a test run occurred on December 5 th. This was followed by a few days of debugging, and then the locomotive was placed in service on Victorian Christmas. This date was chosen because it is such a popular event. The locomotive was subsequently used for Easter Eggspress and two photo charters in addition to the Spring Work Weekend. A rededication of this locomotive will occur at the Annual Picnic on the second Saturday of August. We have extended invitations to prominent political figures and representatives from the other railroads upon which this locomotive ran Financial Report (James Patten) Membership: Membership rose during the year. At the end of the year we had 1054 members, which is 30 more than the previous year. Dues and donations were well above budget, but ticket sales were not, due to Number 9 coming online later than forecast. While ticket sales were not above budget, they were the best in years. Ridership levels nearly matched that of 2007, the year of the National Narrow Gauge Convention in Portland. Operating Expenses: We ended up over budget on operating expenses, in part due to radio advertising, some increased insurance expenses, and general maintenance. However, coal expense was below budget. Annual Fund: For last year s Annual Fund drive we asked for $60,000. This goal was reached in early November, which was just two months after the letter went out. The drive now stands at just under $73,000. Mortgages: At year-end, we held two mortgages: one for the Percival House and one for the Clark Property. The Percival loan now has $93, to be paid back, and the Clark loan has $80,000 to be paid back. However, thanks to an offer too good to refuse, we borrowed money for the recent rail purchase, adding approximately another $45,000 to our debt load (the final bills haven t yet come in for that). Our ratio of debt to the book value of our unrestricted assets at year end is now around 12%, still comfortably below the 20% ratio we are allowed by the bylaws. Once again, thank you all for your financial support of the Museum! Your donations, especially in late Spring, are a vital part of our operation. Please invite your friends, family, and neighbors out this summer to take a ride on the railroad. 3
Editor s Note: The article below was adapted from a printed and on-line brochure describing the 21 Campaign. Like the quick Car 67 Campaign we conducted over the winter, we are hopeful to attract new donors and members through this effort. Donors to our Annual Fall Fundraiser should not feel pressured or obligated to participate in the 21 Campaign. Instead, we hope to reach out to our many on-line friends and followers as we embark on this exciting next phase for the WW&F Railway Museum. The WW&F Introduces the 21 Campaign As reported in the March/April 2016 WW&F Newsletter, an examination of Number 10 s boiler revealed welding flaws sufficiently serious that the boiler is not safe to operate in its current condition. An effort to repair this boiler runs the risk of finding more flaws, and building a new boiler is the best way to eliminate the unknown variables. As noted in the newsletter, the Board of Directors chose this action at their March 2016 meeting. Although this unexpected news could smother some of our enthusiasm for other dreams and plans, we now have another opportunity for our multi-talented group of members and friends to assist with the rebuilding of Number 10 s boiler as we did previously when building Number 9 s boiler. So all those who are inclined to not only contribute financially, but also hone their tooling and shop skills in cooperation with Boothbay Railway Village (the builders of Number 9 s boiler) can experience this unique work first hand and greatly reduce our out-of-pocket costs. As an added bonus, construction of a new boiler for Number 10 will build expertise and enthusiasm that can provide the starting point for a large, challenging, and unique opportunity, which is to construct a boiler for Number 11. Number 11 will be a reconstruction of WW&F Number 7, which was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1907 and destroyed by fire in This project has generated so much enthusiasm that some drawings, patterns, and parts have already been produced. To set these boiler projects in motion, the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway, with roots reaching back to 1854 but alive and kicking in the 21st Century, announces its 21 Campaign. The number 21 represents our commitment to both restoring Number 10 to service and building Number 11. This campaign s goals are to raise funds to construct boilers for locomotives Number 10 and Number 11 and to build enthusiasm and interest among our supporters and volunteers. All 21 Campaign proceeds will go toward Number 10 until it steams again. The most important element for the success in the 21 Campaign is financial support, especially from on-line friends and followers! Our goal is to raise a total of $130,000 during this campaign. Getting involved can be as straightforward as making a small donation. Benefits you receive in thanks for your donation are found below. You can make a donation to the 21 Campaign today by visiting Alternately, you could send a check to the Museum at the address located at the top of this newsletter. Under $ Our thanks for helping to make the 21 Campaign a success! $ Above, plus our booklet detailing locomotives 10 and 11, and a one year WW&F membership $ Above, plus an archival quality print of Eric Schade s line drawing of locomotive 10, and an invitation to participate in a photo charter with Number 9 and Number 10 operating $ Our thanks, booklet, membership, print, and private car charter on a regular operating day $ Our thanks, booklet, membership, print, and charter of the railway (8 hour limit/non-regular day) One can become a Sustaining Donor with the 21 Campaign by making a monthly contribution of $21.00 (less than the cost of a cup of coffee each weekday), and see Number 10 and Number 11 in steam sooner rather than later. As a sustaining donor you will receive a monthly 21 Campaign enewsletter with links to exclusive videos documenting and explaining our progress. Signing up is easy. Use the donate button at and select make this recurring to donate each month. Volunteer with the 21 Campaign by coming to the WW&F and taking an active role in the construction process. Alternatively, share this exciting project with friends or local businesses or make a presentation to a local historical society; the possibilities are endless. The more people that learn about this project, the more successful and exciting it will become. 5 Putting an Historic Riveter to Work On Monday May 16 th, we tested our newly-restored 1880s vintage Allen Portable Pneumatic Riveter. The riveter was tested by reattaching the original boiler and smokebox of WW&F Number 9, an 1891 Portland Company Forney that the Museum returned to operation with a new boiler several years ago. Number 9 s original boiler and newlyreattached smokebox will eventually become part of a new display at the Museum. The riveter test was characteristic of its application, as it will be used in the construction of new boilers for locomotives Numbers 10 and 11 as part of our 21 Campaign. The riveter was donated to the Museum several years ago by Jim Heuber of Mack Brothers Boiler and Sheet Iron Works in Syracuse, NY. Mack Brothers was the original owner of the riveter, and it had been in their possession for four generations. It is amazing to be the custodian of such an incredible, interesting, and useful piece of history! Enjoy the YouTube video Testing the Deep Throat Riveter, courtesy of Museum volunteer Eric Schade, to see the riveter in action! Stephen Piwowarski After restoration by Brendan Barry, Phil Bleauvelt, Alan Downey, Allen Ewert, Wayne Laepple, Steve Piwowarski, Kerry Surles, and others, the riveter was ready for work. Jason Lamontagne moves the riveter into position. 5
While one Spring Work Weekend crew worked at the north end of the railway, another crew worked at the north end of the carbarn yard. Restoration work continues on Bridgton & Harrison boxcar 67, donated by Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad and Museum (see Jan/Feb 2016 WW&F Newsletter). After undercarriage work is complete, the overhead crane in this bay will be used to flip the chassis upright. Photo by James Patten 6
WW&F Railway Museum Summer 2016 Calendar July 9: Ice Cream Social August 13-14: Annual Picnic In-Kind Donations Second Half of Addendum The listing of in-kind donations in the March/April 2016 WW&F Newsletter inadvertently omitted Larry Bader s donation of a Hunter 1930s ceiling fan. Jason Lamontagne feels it will work out well in the Engine House. Yard Sale for the Archives During the Annual Picnic on August 13 th and 14 th, the Museum will be holding a yard sale for the purchase of a printer and scanner for organizing the WW&F archives. Full progress at completing this important work is hampered until the printer and scanner are available. Please bring standard yard sale items, but please do not bring appliances, computers, or televisions; clothing should be clean and without stains or tears. Storage space is available at the Museum if you wish to bring items over beforehand.
