2 MINUTES OF THE GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING April 4, 2019 President John Pendergast called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Past President John Munoz. Secretary Judy Pendergast announced Roll Call: All were present. There were 33 members present, 2 new members, Jerry and Nancy Myers and 2 young guests, children of Karl and Stephanie Ferazzi. President Pendergast called for a motion to accept the minutes of the March meeting. Don Derr made the motion. It was seconded by Ed Burke. Motion passed. President Pendergast welcomed our new members and guests. He reported that several changes have been made to the activities list for 2019 and would be discussed later. He thanked Giovanni of Dean s Place for providing us the new meeting place. It was agreed by the membership that it is great as is the food and the staff. Treasurer Mike Hanley gave the report for March. President Pendergast called for a motion to accept the Treasurer s report. Motion was made by Anthony Adsit, seconded by Harry Ransom and passed. Executive Vice President John Munoz sent around a sign-up sheet for volunteers for the BOG being held in Las Vegas February 27, 28 and 29, He asked for any interest in a Valley of Fire Tour for the BOG and drivers. It was suggested that a tour of Red Rock might be better since it is closer and might attract more members to drive their cars and the BOG guests. He also talked about a possible tour of the Gaudin Ford Collection for that event. He sent around a sign-up sheet for the Las Ventanas Car Show April 13, Activities VP Tom Rowlett said that if anyone is still planning on attending the Kingman Fun Run they should contact him. Though interest is pretty slight within the club, Tom will still be going, along with a few others. Stephanie Ferazzi discussed the Kiwanis Color Run and Car Show April 27, 2019 and handed out flyers with all of the information. Registration fee is $20. Jeanie Prouty talked about the Teen Challenge Car Show April 13, Ten people have already signed up. She suggested that we meet at the Police Station at Alta and MLK at 1:15 PM and go as a group to the car show. The registration fee is $25 payable upon arrival. John Pendergast stated that Richie Clyne has agreed to open his collection to our club on May 11, He also reported that the Dinner Social will be held June 15, Also, the picnic will be held August 25, This is a Sunday instead of Saturday as that is the only day the pavilion was available. Tom Rowlett has already made the reservation. Mike and Linda Hanley have agreed to host the event. John also inquired about interest in another tour of the Test Site. A sign-up sheet was passed around because early background checks are required before anyone is allowed to go on the tour. More information about getting that background check will be forthcoming. And interest seemed to be high according to the sign-up sheet results. Membership VP Danny Barnett told about the possibility of 2 new members signing up. Sunshine Chair Carla Adsit brought a get-well card for Richie Clyne so we could all sign it. Western Region Director Dion Stams said that the talked about merge of our region with another region has been tabled. He talked about a 1-Day Tour he attended in Phoenix which was hosted by that other region s new director. 2

3 New Business: Bruce Spangrud announced that he took first place at the Teen Challenge in Riverside, Ca where 300 cars were registered. Danny Barnett talked about the Great American Race and the lunch the public is invited to attend in Victorville, CA at the Rout 66 Museum on June 22, The event is being sponsored by Hemmings Motor News. Danny suggested that a trip to the Railroad Museum in Barstow might be achieved at that time as well. The 50/50 drawing was won by Ray Waber, who gave his winnings back to the club. Thank you Ray. The next meeting will be May 2, Anthony Adsit made a motion to adjourn and Bruce Spangrud seconded the motion. Motion passed. Meeting adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Judy Pendergast, Secretary President s Letter I d Like to start by thanking all the members that showed up to the meeting and enjoyed the great food and hospitality. if you haven t made it over to Dean s Place on S. Dean Martin Dr. please do so. As you will see in the activities list there have been some date changes and corrections. The Club Picnic has been moved to August 25 th due to availability. Thank you, Mike and Linda Hanley for volunteering to host the picnic. This will be a fun time and a break from the summer heat. Last year we had a great turn out even though it was a last-minute change of venue. The weather at Lee Canyon was sunny and in the mid 70 s. So, mark your calendar. We were really surprised at how many people signed up for the Nevada Test Site Tour. For those of you who haven t been on this tour it is really something to see. The tour starts at the Atomic Testing Museum where we board a charter bus with a guide that is generally someone who is retired from the site or military, that will tell you about what went on out there, back in the day to what it s being used for today. Then we will head out to Mercury and be told the do s and don ts. They make sure we have no cameras. Then we will proceed over the hill in to the testing range. You will really see history and have answers to all the things you saw in Black and White footage. It s something for everybody to see. There s minimal walking and you can pack a lunch or grab something at the cafeteria. If you re interested please let me know and I will make sure you have the necessary paper work to fill out so they make sure you re not a spy (backround check). We liked it so much that we will make the trip again. On April 13 th we will be at Las Ventanas; it s an open show we invite all car clubs to participate in. This year there will be BBQ and entertainment. After the show we will be convoying to the Teen challenge car show in downtown Las Vegas. The Board of Governors meeting is less than a year away and we are looking for more volunteers to help with a Red Rock Canyon tour. We would like to get as many vintage cars as we can to drive our guests around Red Rock. So, don t be shy. If you have any ideas or thoughts about possible tours let us know. This is your chapter. 4 HIGH ROLLERS BOARD MEETING MARCH 26, 2019 The first quarterly board meeting was held Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at the Hush Puppy Restaurant. Present were: President John Pendergast, Vice President John Munoz, Secretary Judy Pendergast, Treasurer Mike Hanley, Membership VP Danny Barnett and Publications VP Fosco Picchi. Quorum met. Also present were Assistant Treasurer Barbara Baudoin and member at large Joe Baudoin. Treasurer Mike Hanley announced that 5 CD s will be coming due in May and June. It was decided to cash out the smallest CD and transfer the money to the general checking account as funds will be needed soon to hold the venue for the 2020 BOG. The other 4 will be rolled over at a higher rate of interest than is currently in place. This will require the in-bank presence of the Treasurer, the Assistant Treasurer and the President. Mike also stated that the 2018 Income Tax Return will be completed this week at a cost of $ Vice President John Munoz stated that he will have a new budget prepared by the next board meeting. Publications VP Fosco Picchi talked about having business cards printed for handouts. John Munoz inquired about having a newsletter segment titled My First Car. Activities was the main event of the meeting: President John Pendergast said that driving long distances to car shows was a concern as our club is a touring club and sitting in a parking lot all the time was just not cutting it. He also requested some changes to the calendar of events. The current event for May is the Kingman Fun Run which has only received a few interested members. Other possible events were suggested. It was decided that John Pendergast will call Richie Clyne to try to make arrangements to see his Duesenberg and/or fire engine collections. The second choice will be a trip to Overton for lunch at Sugars and a side tour of the Lost City Museum. The Dinner Social will be moved to June 15, 2019 and the Mt. Charleston picnic will be moved to August 17, The BOG meeting (February 27 29, 2020) was discussed to get the ball rolling; The Silverton Hotel and Casino has been selected to be our main venue having the best price offered. Aftermeeting events were also discussed, with one being a tour to Valley of Fire with local members driving their cars with our guests as passengers. Judy Pendergast and Barbara Baudoin volunteered to handle the pre-registration. Harry Ransom will be asked to handle the goody bags. President John Pendergast adjourned the meeting at 9 PM. 7 Editor s Note This month s Car of the Month is Joe and Barbara Boudoin s 1960 Chevrolet Impala. A sweet ride with plenty of both Show and Go. My personal opinion is that 1960 was the best looking Chevy...EVER! But I ll admit, I m not impartial. My very first car was a 60 Chevy. A bare bones six cylinder Biscayne with a three speed column shift. I was 13. I found the car behind Bert s Auto Repair in Milford Massachusetts and I paid $25 for it. Quite a price on a paperboy s budget. It had no brakes, and was rusted beyond street use...but it ran! And didn t it have gorgeous lines! I learned a lot from that car. From fixing the brakes and replacing the clutch. From building a track for it in the back woods and driving it in all weather conditions. My stepfather, refused to touch it. But he would advise me on how to diagnose and fix problems, and lend me his tools. He always insisted that I learn to do the work myself. My first repair...fixing the brakes...introduced me to WD40, ViceGrips, and learning to position my hand so that I didn t strip the skin from my knuckles. Talking to old car enthusiasts of my generation, I ve learned that my adventures were not unique. There were lots of us out there running old cars in the woods, It was good fun. Today, most kids don t have a place like that to play. And any parents that would let them work under a car supported only by two bumper jacks would be charged with child endangerment. But surprisingly we all survived. We all were ready to drive when we turned 16...and we all grew up to be car guys. Moving to Las Vegas from New England, I traded my Snap-Ons for a checkbook. I admit it. I ve gone soft. But when I first spotted the Baudoin s 60 Chevy, I felt a wave of emotion come over me. For one brief moment I was transported back in time. I was a lanky 13 year old back at Bert s... marveling at shear beauty. Fosco 7

8 This car was originally Suntan Copper, with a factory 4-speed, a 283 cid engine, power brakes and power steering. It was reassembled with a 409 cid engine and 456 gears.

8 Car of the Month Joe & Barbara Baudoin s 1960 Chevrolet Impala I saw this vehicle sitting in the back lot of a business, up against the back fence for years. It had been picked apart...and one day it was gone. Later I found out that this car was put back together for someone for there 40th birthday in It was like the car he d had in High School. 8 This car was originally Suntan Copper, with a factory 4-speed, a 283 cid engine, power brakes and power steering. It was reassembled with a 409 cid engine and 456 gears. It sat in a climate controlled garage with 7 Ferraris for almost 10 years, and was never driven. The owner of the car decided to sell it and my friend of 60 years, who worked for him, told me that the car was for sale. That is when I found out it was the car I saw up against the fence in the back lot.

9 I bought the car, which did not run. My friend and I put it on a trailer and took it to it s new home...mine. I bought the car in 1997 and the first thing I did to get it running was two new carburetors, and rebuilt the entire brake system. I have invested $26,000...which does not include the cost of the car...from front to back fixing everything starting with a new radiator to re-wiring the tail lights. This past October was the first time the car had been out of town or on the highway. I drove the car from Las Vegas to Beatty for the Beatty Days Celebration. My biggest regret with the car is I had to give up the 4-speed transmission. My knees are so bad I could no longer work the clutch. I love the car and did not want to sell it, so I had a 700R4 transmission with a 370 posi rear installed. Now it is a pleasure to drive and I can stop on an incline and go again without killing the engine. Joe 9

13 Finished with your Bulb Horn? John Munoz suggests you stick it in the magazine rack at your doctor or dentist s office. How often have you been sitting in a waiting room and found absolutely nothing that interests you in the magazine rack? He s your chance to brighten up someone s day...and maybe inspire them to join our club! My First Car At our March Board Meeting, John Munoz had the suggestion that the Newsletter include a feature: My First Car - where High Rollers members could share there memories of that special moment. So how about it? me...or hand me a note. What was your first car? Tell us what your first car was. If you feel like it...say a little something you liked (or hated) about it. Or if you re a bit more ambitions, write a paragraph or two. If you have an old snapshot...with or without you in it...send it along. Teen Challenge Car Show Saturday April 13 2:00-6:00 The 4th Annual Teen Challenge car show will take place on Saturday, April 13, from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at 720 South 9th Street.

For those participating in the show, it is suggested to arrive between 12:30 an 1:30 PM. All vehicles will enter 9th Street from Bonneville.

14 Teen Challenge Car Show Saturday April 13 2:00-6:00 The 4th Annual Teen Challenge car show will take place on Saturday, April 13, from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at 720 South 9th Street. This location is in front of the Las Vegas Men s Center. The registration fee is $25 per vehicle, however, if we are at least a group of ten, then the registration fee would be $20 per vehicle. For those participating in the show, it is suggested to arrive between 12:30 an 1:30 PM. All vehicles will enter 9th Street from Bonneville. Event participants will be on hand to direct vehicles from Bonneville onto 9th Street. Our car club can park as a group. The 4th Annual Teen Challenge car show is open to cars, trucks, and motorcycles. There will be multiple trophies, music, and concessions available. You can help support a non-profit that is making a difference in Las Vegas. Teen Challenge battles addiction, gang involvement, etc. Overcoming any addiction is never easy; but through making right choices and perseverance, it can be done. Teen Challenge is a place to go for that help. Due to the morning Las Ventanas event, we will leave our departing area at 1:15 P.M., which should get us to Teen Challenge by 1:20 P.M. The following is where we will meet to proceed to Teen Challenge. We will meet at 400 South Martin Luther King (MLK) Boulevard, which is the police headquarters complex. We will meet in the far west parking lot of the complex. This is next to Alta Drive. You will see my (Jeanie Prouty s) 1973 VW Thing parked there. The following are suggestions to 400 South MLK. If you are coming from the northwest area, you could use I-95 to Rancho Road, take Rancho Road south to Alta. There are two right-turning lanes from I-95 to South Rancho Road. Take Rancho to Alta. Alta will be the second traffic light after you turn onto Rancho Road. Turn left on Alta to 400 MLK. If you are coming from south/southeast, you could take I-15 to Sahara Avenue. Turn left/west on to Sahara. Once on Sahara, you will need to turn right onto Rancho Road which is the second traffic light, once on Sahara Avenue. Turn right onto Rancho, all the way to Alta. Enroute to Alta you will cross Oakey, Charleston, Palomino. The next traffic light is Alta. Turn right to 400 South MLK. If you are coming from the northeast, there will be various ways to proceed, depending on any construction. If you are leaving Las Ventanas directly to Teen Challenge, take West Charleston east all the way to Rancho Road. Turn left on Rancho to Alta.
