2 Chapter Director s Spiel We hope everyone had a FUN, and even more importantly SAFE, 4 th of July holiday, and had a chance to stop at least a moment and ponder the significance of what it all stands for, our freedom, our way of life! And most of all, the sacrifices made by many, to give us those freedoms. Well, we think things are going fairly well this riding season, at least so far, other than these periods we re getting of such intense heat (we hope, if you are doing any riding in that heat, that you are using all the smart methods to keep cool and stay hydrated, it is so important). We ve had a few activities, with some good participation, and the comments received have been favorable, the members are having fun! We hope to continue that trend, and have more fun, exciting things to do together. If you have any ideas of something you think might be fun and would fit on a day that is open on the chapter calendar, let me know, we re always open to new ideas, and it might be something that would really interest a bunch of your fellow members. Thinking of activities, we DID have a special weekend event planned for August 18-19, to tour the Mammoth Caves in Kentucky. Frank Balzer, who had made the initial suggestion, did some further research on the tours of the cave system, to see how it would work for us members, and what he found out was there was a LOT of walking involved, some in areas that are, shall we say, less than optimum. It was discussed at our last chapter gathering, and the overall consensus was it didn t sound like such a great idea after all, and it was suggested to cancel the ride, which is what we did. Just as an aside, we had also thought, as a side trip during the ride, that we could stop in to the KY rally, going on that same weekend in Cave City, which is right in that same area, so you might want to think about going up there anyway, to attend the rally. If you think you d like to do that, maybe as part of a chapter ride, let me know, and we can see what we can plan. One activity on the calendar that is still planned is the weekend ride August to Lake Lure, Chimney Rock, and see the water falls around Hendersonville, NC. We will leave early on Saturday, the 11 th and travel mostly secondary, scenic, fun riding roads, stopping for lunch at the Spring Creek Café in Hot Springs, and getting to our lodging at the Days Inn in Hendersonville somewhere around 1:30pm. (I have several rooms reserved in my name at the Days Inn, so if you plan on going, please let me know so I can mark a room down for you, I will have to cancel the unused rooms the Friday before we leave on Saturday the 11 th so I don t get charged for them.) After we all get checked in, and drop off our luggage or whatever into our rooms, we ll leave the Days Inn and ride to the Chimney Rock Park, do the tour there, and on the way back to the motel, stop at a really nice BBQ place along the river that we found the last time we did this trip, for dinner. Sunday morning we ll check out and head on back home, checking out several waterfalls around the area, along the way. We plan to stop at the Dairy Queen in Cherokee for lunch, should get there in the mid-afternoon, depending on how long we stop and how much time we spend at the different waterfalls. From the Dairy Queen we ll continue towards home, with the planned route, after bypassing Gatlinburg, getting to the cut-off to US-321 in Pigeon Forge, where members can split off to however they want to go to get the rest of the way home. We also want to extend an invitation to any of our fellow chapters to join us, if you re interested, please contact me. As we get into August, don t forget Wing Ding is Aug 29-Sep 01 right here in Knoxville at the Convention Center, with the special Official Welcome Party at the Appalachian Museum Tuesday evening, Aug 28 (you can pick up your registration packets, IF you are pre-registered). Sure hope you plan on checking it out, as GWRRA says, it is the world s largest Family Reunion, so come join all your family and have a good time. If you haven t registered to attend already, further below in this newsletter is additional information. Please be safe as you do any rides, we want you around for a long time. Hope to see you soon, Brian & Loretta Richards, TN-M Chapter Directors August 2018, Page 2 of 14

3 Assistant Chapter Director Hi, hope you re getting ready for a new year for fun with your fellow chapter friends. Make sure you, your gear, and especially your ride, are all at their peak performance level and ready to get out there and have fun. Please be careful if you get a chance to get out there and ride. Ride Safe! James Whitener, TN-M Assistant Chapter Director Chapter 2018 Couple of the Year Hello everyone. Well, July has come and almost gone. This summer is rapidly passing. We have still not been able to ride or participate in the rides. It sure has not been a good riding season for us since George had to take out time for physical body repair. He is still taking therapy for his knee which is coming along good. Doctor said about one year it takes for complete healing. In the process of recuperating from the knee he managed to strain his back and has been taking therapy for it. In the meantime, we are praying his body will soon be healed and we will be back riding. We are planning to go to Wing Ding. Hope we have a good turn out from Chapter M. Heard we had a good turn-out for the dinner meeting at Countryside Restaurant. We so appreciate you attending and so glad you had a good time. We THANK YOU Brian for follow up with the restaurant on Tuesday. See you at the meeting. Patti Balzer, but she didn t have her chapter shirt on, darn, so the money rolls over to next month 50 / Joe Neeley & Robert Russell Chapter M Out Having FUN! TN-M Ride to the Green Tomato, July 14 th Brian Richards We had a fantastic ride on Saturday, Jul 14 th, to the Green Tomato in Mooresburg. We had 12 members in all that had a really nice day, for a fun ride, good food, and great friends. Loretta and I led the ride, unfortunately riding in our quadra-cycle (aka 4-wheeler). (We both are really missing joining on our chapter rides on our Gold Wing, but at least we have a vehicle we can use to participate when possible.) We left the Walmart and headed on US-11 to Watt Rd to Pellissippi Parkway to Oakridge to Karns Valley to Emory to Maynardville Pike to a break stop in Maynardville at a Shell/convenience store. We left from there and continued on Maynardville Pike to Tazewell and cut over to 25E and followed it to cut over onto 11W for a short jog to the Green Tomato Grill. There was quite a variety of food consumed. You would NOT believe the size of the hamburger that Robert Russel and Renee McInerney both ordered, and I can tell you, NEITHER of them finished it, thank goodness for take-home boxes! After some good eating, we got back on the road, and headed back west on 11W with a planned stop in Rutledge for ice cream, which fizzled out as the place I remembered wasn t there anymore, but we soldiered on and I remembered a place just as you are coming into Blaine on 11W, where we stopped, most of us enjoyed some good ice cream, and after that, everyone just headed back home by the best route they could. There were a whole bunch of comments made about what a great ride it was, we saw some fantastic scenery along the way, the weather was rather decent to us, and not a bunch of traffic to contend with. All told, it was a good day. Hopefully you will be able to join us on a future ride and share in the fun and camaraderie.

5 A quick stop at a convenience store on the way, for a quick butt break and refresher TN-M ROMEOS Ride, July 18 Brian Richards After making sure that Loretta had everything I thought she might need, for a short, couple of hours alone, I left home to ride to the Cracker Barrel to participate in the July ROMEOS ride. Well, I met up with Ken Gray there, and just a minute or two after I pulled in next to Ken s parked bike, Joe Neeley rode up and parked next to me. Ken came off the porch and met up with us, told us that Chris was doing fairly well after her out-patient surgery for her heart the previous day, which was good to hear. Ken and I both had reasons to keep the ride fairly short, me to get back home to Loretta and Ken to get home to Chris and to get ready for a trip out of state they were leaving on the next day. Ken had figured out a nice, but short route to take us on, which was great planning on his part and very much appreciated. We left the Cracker Barrel with Ken leading, and off we went. He took us on several roads that I know that I haven t been on before, and it was a really nice ride, saw some nice scenery, rode on a few fun roads, although one that had a section that WOULD have been fun, but we didn t get the full enjoyment of it, being stuck behind a truck loaded down with logs and running pretty slow, oh well. After doing a big circle from Lenoir City, first on 321, to 95 to 58 and on to roads I lost track of, I know we went around Harriman, and eventually arrived in Clinton. We split up there, Ken and Joe to continue back in their best direction to get home, and me going on through Clinton and winding my way back to Corryton. All-in-all it was a really nice day, and a really nice ride. We hope that if you have the opportunity, you might consider joining us on an upcoming ROMEOS ride, they are on the Wednesday of the week following our chapter s monthly gathering (I would normally say the 3 rd Wednesday, but that doesn t always work out, for example, in August, because August starts on a Wednesday, the 3 rd Wednesday is the day after our chapter gathering on the 2 nd Tuesday). The ride leaves the Cracker Barrel in front of the Fort Loudon Medical Center at 9:30am August 2018, Page 5 of 14

6 TN-M July 24 th Dinner to Countryside in Vonore Brian Richards We had a really good-sized group have a nice meal at the Countryside restaurant in Vonore, selected for us by Vida Maples Vida, you did a good job! We had 18 show up to the restaurant, and thank goodness we had a back room, there was a lot of laughter and camaraderie, a good time was had by all, and it sure got noisy! We were glad to see Marge Wunderlich and Burl McCammon join us, Marge says she is managing one day at a time, which makes sense, and Burl says he is recuperating nicely from his back surgery, a little sore, understandably, but he says it feels like his constant back problem is finally taken care of, thank goodness. We had some good food, everyone seemed to be happy with their choices. Boy, Mel had ordered their meatloaf, and I swear it looked like they gave him half the loaf! What a big pile of meatloaf he had sitting on his plate, he ended up taking what looked like half of it home.
