Chapter Director s Spiel Well, we are finally and fully into the summer riding season. We ve had a few chapter rides, and many members have had taken the opportunity for a fun time with their friends, which is what it is all about. We are looking forward to a great season together with our fellow members. We just hope that all of you are careful with your riding, be safe out there, watch out for those distracted drivers, and since it seems that we are going to have a hotter than normal summer, please be sure to keep hydrated while riding, we want everyone to go out, have a great time, AND get home safe and sound. I know that by the time you receive this newsletter, the 2017 July 4 th Independence Day will have past, but we still wanted to say that we hope you took a moment, in the midst of all your fun, celebration, possible cook-out, and maybe shooting off some fireworks, to consider what it all means, how lucky we are to be living in this wonderful country. Well, we ve been your Chapter Directors now for ½ year, and we would like really appreciate receiving some feedback from you. Are we doing the things you want us to do? Are we guiding the chapter in the direction you would prefer? Do you have any suggestions/ideas for things you d like to see going on in the chapter? As I ve said repeatedly, this is YOUR chapter, and we want to do our best to make sure you are happy with your participation and your membership, and with what the chapter is doing. Please let us know, if we don t hear from you, we have no idea if we re doing what you want, or possibly going off on a tangent. We ve got a couple rides coming up that it would really help in our planning to know approximately how many members were considering going. One is a weekend overnighter, meaning we will need to look into lodging options. We would really appreciate if you would us and let us know for each of the rides, whether you are or are not considering participating, thank you. The rides are: July 15 th, to the Applewood Farm, and getting in some mini-golf and for those interested, even trying to Zip-line; July 25 th, our 3 rd Tuesday dinner ride to RJ s Courtyard in Alcoa (it helps to have an idea how many will be going so I can let the restaurant know, so they can be prepared and we don t end up with a long wait); July 29-30, the weekend ride to the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY; and August 5 th to Canoe the Caney. Details for those rides are being researched now and will be provided later. If you have any other suggestions or comments for what you would like the chapter to be doing, please let us, or any Team member know. Thanks and we look forward to some great times, together, on the road. Brian & Loretta Richards, TN-M Chapter Directors Assistant Chapter Director Hi, hope you re getting some chances to get out and ride. Come join us on a ride, and we d enjoy seeing you at our gathering. Please be careful when you re out riding. Ride Safe! James Whitener, TN-M Assistant Chapter Director From our Chapter Educator Due to Bill s cancer, he and Fran have rightly been totally focused on his health, dealing with the doctors and hospitals, etc., so obviously we did not expect them to even be thinking or worrying about submitting a Rider Education article for the newsletter. We send our hopes and prayers to them both, and hope they are able to join us again in the near future. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Jul 2017, Page 2 of 16

I saw an article in the TN-A2 newsletter submitted by THEIR Chapter Educator, Bob Mack, and got his permission to reprint it here as I think it is very relevant information for all of us to have. Bob told me he got most of the information from articles by Ken Condon of Motorcyclist Magazine, so we d like to attribute it to him. How Much Traction Does Your Motorcycle Have? The Critical Connection Between Your Bike and the Road Simply put, traction is the friction between your tires and the road surface. Several factors determine how much traction is available, including surface condition, the tires ability to grip the road, and the amount of load or pressure pressing the tires onto the surface. Managing that small patch of friction, and knowing what factors help and hinder traction, will allow you to develop traction intelligence that helps you predict whether there is enough grip for whatever maneuver you want to attempt. Tires are the critical connection between your bike and the road, and so keeping in mind that tire construction, compound, condition, and operating temperature directly affect traction potential gives you an immediate leg up. To attain the greatest traction potential a tire must reach its ideal operating temperature range. Street tires are designed to provide good grip over a wide range of temperatures and to get up to temperature quickly. Race tires have a very narrow usable range and higher operating temperature requirements that take longer to reach, making race rubber a lousy choice for most street situations. Correct inflation pressure controls tire flex to attain and maintain the optimal heat range for the greatest durability and performance over a wide range of conditions. This is important because traction quality and quantity is also constantly changing with variations in the road surface. Roads with a coarse texture offer more dimples and voids for the rubber to squeeze into, whereas very smooth surfaces, such as a steel construction plate, have very little roughness for tires to grip. Moisture and debris affects surfaces differently too. Wet pavement, for example, has reduced traction, but there is usually enough grip provided you brake, turn, and accelerate smoothly. Gravel or sand typically requires much more care. To stay on two (or three) wheels you must become very good at identifying surfaces that may not provide sufficient grip. For example, look for variations in surface color or texture. A slick glossy surface reflects light differently than a grippy textured surface. Some hazards are easy to spot, but a light sprinkle of sand or some fluid spills can be almost impossible to see until it s too late. One trick to prevent getting caught out by hidden hazards is to predict that a hazard is likely to exist, like gravel near a construction site. If you must ride over a surface hazard, be sure to keep the bike as upright as possible and avoid braking, turning, or accelerating. Traction also varies by the amount of weight pressing each tire onto the surface. Basically, the more force there is pressing a tire onto the road the more traction you have on that tire. Tire load changes with every action you take; handlebar inputs from swerving and cornering cause lateral shifts in load, while accelerating causes weight to shift onto the rear tire, and braking causes load to pitch forward. The thing to remember is that one tire loaded means the other tire is unloaded. A front tire skimming the pavement on extreme acceleration has no grip for turning or braking. Likewise, the rear tire will skid easily as the load pitches forward under hard deceleration. Being traction smart is the first step in developing a traction sense where your nerves and brain work together to recognize whether traction is sufficient or you re near the edge. The sense of traction is transmitted through the handlebars, seat or foot-pegs, with good grip feeling stable and poor grip feeling vague. Even if your senses indicate that traction is adequate, practicing smooth application of the brake, throttle, and steering inputs will help to avoid abrupt load spikes that squander available grip, as well as better prepare you to feel when traction is high and when it s low. 4 Chapter 2017 Couple of the Year Hi All; June was another good riding month for Renee & I. On June 10 th I led 4 bikes to the Cruise-In at the Lenoir City First Baptist Church where we were able to meet up with 3 more bikes and had a great time. We parked right next to the Ice Cream tent. Imagine that! This was their biggest car show ever, about 300 cars, motorcycles, and remote control airplanes and growing each year. On June 17 th we went on the Chapter ride to Lamberts Café (Home of the Throwed Rolls) in Sikeston, Missouri. We all caught at least one roll and had a great meal. Then we managed to go find Ice Cream. We had 6 bikes with 8 Chapter M members for a really good weekend ride till we were almost Home. We ran into rain about Lebanon and finally had to stop near Cookeville because it was raining so hard. See the photos to see how Renee improvised plastic bags for rubber booties and just had to have the matching hat. A few miles down the road, Marlene Kinney had a rear flat tire and handled it like a pro. She was able to get her bike off the road and safely to a stop before panicking. We are all so proud of her for doing such a great job recognizing and dealing with her first flat. All-in-all it was a great weekend. Our June Dinner Ride took us to Hot Rod s 50 s Diner in Maryville. There were 9 members attending and 5 of us were able to ride. WARNING-- parking is not bike friendly! It was a very nice evening but a little warm for eating outside but there was no room inside when we arrived. As usual the food was good and plentiful and the company was great. We are looking forward to a fun July. Check out the ride calendar in this issue and let s ride. Ride Safe Mel & Renee McInerney, TN-M 2017 Couple of the Year Jul 2017, Page 4 of 16

TN District Director s Message for July 2017 Here it is already July and we are in the middle of riding season. Man time flies when you are having fun. Reading the chapter newsletters we see people riding and having a good time on their bikes. Whether it is a dinner ride, or weekend ride, or visiting other chapters Tennessee GWRRA members are out riding and having fun. We saw several Tennessee GWRRA members attending the Georgia District Rally last weekend in Dalton Georgia. We had a very good time there visiting friends and playing games. Thanks to Dennis and Anne Greer for winning the Directors challenge for Tennessee. July message from your District Directors Gary & Patti The Virginia Rally is coming up this July 4th week, actually 5,6,7 in Roanoke, Va. After that is the West Virginia District Rally in Elkins West Virginia. A new location for them. After West Virginia we have the Kentucky Blast in Cave City, Ky. Then Wing Ding in Grapevine Texas. North Carolina is the next event after Wing Ding. Mentioning Wing Ding Tennessee has been given their work assignment this year and it looks like we will be working security and greeting folks. Not sure of the day yet. Hope those attending will help us out again this year. Wings Across Tennessee will be a few days after Wing Ding. This is always a great ride for a great cause. Jul 2017, Page 6 of 16

Congratulations to Rick and Liz Broadway on becoming the new District Directors for Kentucky. They took over July 1. Go to the Kentucky Blast and wish them well. Troy and Vickie tell me that visitation is going great in Middle/West Tennessee. They had a over flow crowd at their last gathering. We see East Tennessee doing better on visitation and chasing plaques. Chapters T, F, and C have been hot after the plaques. A-2 also got in on the chase. Where are the plaques? Well, chapter TN-T has the COY Plaque, the Tennessee Plaque, and the Region N Wandering Plaque. Chapter Z has the Middle/West Tennessee plaque. Now you know where they are go get them. Chapter T took advantage of the $5.00 off Wing Ding registration offered by national with 5 people sending in registrations. They are in the running for some prizes at Wing Ding. Way to go chapter T. By them doing this they got the district in the running for some prizes also, even better chapter T. Hope we win something. What can I say about Spring Fling. Patti and I met with Pete Smith today and got everything signed and ready for next year. The main event, vendors, hospitality, training, COY meet and greet, bike show, light show, and masters breakfast will be at Country Cascades. The Opening ceremony will be at Country. The Talent show and Closing ceremonies will be at Ramada. We will have a dinner and show at the new Dolly Parton mountain adventures show. We will put out more details in upcoming newsletters and e mails. Patti and I are confident this is going to be one of our best Spring Flings with you help it will be. Patti has started working on Winter Event. She will be working with our staff in the next few months. In the mean time ride safe and have fun. Gary & Patti Hamilton TN Senior District Directors Gold Wing Road Riders Association Special note: We have booked a block of rooms for Wing Ding in Grapevine, Texas at the Comfort Inn, 301 Capital St. Grapevine. Submitted by Brian Richards On June 17 th, 6 bikes, 8 chapter members headed out to Sikeston, MO just to get something to eat! You know us Gold Wingers, Ride to Eat & Eat to Ride! We had a really nice ride out, got to our motel, got checked in and got refreshed a little, and left to get to the Lambert s café for a great meal. It was our first time there, so we personally didn t really know what to expect, but Mel had commented when we had gotten to the motel that the sooner we got to Lambert s the better as there was going to be a looooooong line. Well, sure enough, it was crowded and there was a BUNCH of people sitting around outside on the porch. Thank goodness Lambert s has installed a whole strip of big fans with water sprayers so shoot out a cooling mist over everyone, which was definitely needed as it was HOT! We checked in and were given a piece of paper with our number on it, 197, well we knew we were in for a wait when we heard the next number called out over the PA system, 80 something. Oh boy. I didn t really pay much attention (I didn t really want to know), how long it actually was, but we eventually got called and seated. It was quite a large place, and we were at a corner table in the back section. When we got our food, I was surprised at the size of the portions, there was a lot to eat. And while waiting, of course we HAD to raise our hands to get a roll thrown to us. And nobody missed their catch, which was good, and speaking of good, those were some GOOD rolls! And on the subject of the portion sizes, Loretta said she wasn t really hungry, so she thought she would do okay just ordering a Chef s Salad. Just look at the pictures below of all of us sitting around with our food, and pay close attention to that salad that Loretta got. Needless to say, she most definitely did NOT even put a decent-sized dent in it. And we didn t bother asking for a to-go box, being on the bikes and in a motel, it wouldn t make much sense.

We DID, unfortunately, get into some rain on the way home, after a stop for lunch and the decision to modify our route to head more south as everything nasty looked more north of us from what we could see and what showed on radar. We avoided some for a while, but eventually it caught up with us anyway, around Lebanon, TN. A little before Kingston we finally got out of it, which turned out to be extremely lucky for us. Randy & Marlene were each riding their own bikes, Randy was our ride leader for the ride home, Marlene was following Randy and I was following her. We were traveling on I-40E, just around the Kingston exit when I could see smoke coming from Marlene s back tire (if it had still been raining, with the splash up from the road, I never would have seen anything going on), I hollered over the CB for Marlene to pull over immediately. She did, and she did a fantastic job of getting on the shoulder and coming to a quick stop. As she was almost stopped, I could see the back-end of the bike wobbling back-and-forth, but she did great at controlling it and coming to a SAFE stop. All of us in the group were SO relieved that she did such a wonderful job and it all turned out fine with no accidents. We tried to plug the hole, but none of our pumps would pump the tire back up, we figured that in the wobbling, the tire must have lost the bead. Randy tried calling Rescue, but nothing came of that, being Father s Day weekend, they reported that any tow companies they were actually able to get in contact with, didn t have a roll-on vehicle. Randy then called his son, who came with his truck and a flat-bed trailer. We were able to get Marlene s bike up on the trailer and strapped down securely, and off they went taking it home, and the rest of us headed home from there on whatever routes were best for our destinations. Thank goodness what could have been a real disaster came out so well in the end. We want to thank everyone in the group for the assistance and support, once again the GWRRA camaraderie came shining through Jul 2017, Page 8 of 16

Visitations Submitted by Brian Richards Loretta and I for very many years have made a habit of visiting other chapters, while we were in VA, then up in OH, and now here in TN. We ve visited every TN chapter at least twice, not counting the farthest away, TN- W2 near Memphis, it is more like 3-4 times. Our latest visits were a planned joint venture. The Clarksville chapter, TN-Q and the Nashville chapter, TN-A have their gatherings scheduled in such a way that some months they are back-to-back, TN-Q has theirs the last Monday of the month and TN-A has theirs the last Tuesday of the month. Well, June worked out that they were again back-to-back. Loretta s brother and sisterin-law live in Clarksville, so we made arrangements, rode up to visit them Monday afternoon, left for the TN-Q gathering, and returned back to spend the night with our family. We did more family visiting during the day on Tuesday, then left and rode to the TN-A gathering. After it was over we hit the road to ride home, got home just a tad after midnight, but it was a pleasant evening weather-wise, so all-in-all it was a nice couple of days. We plan to do other chapter visitations, as we enjoy visiting with our other TN District friends, seeing how other chapters do things, maybe get some ideas, etc., and we would love to have some of you ride along with us. If you think you would like to join us on a visitation, let us know, and we will keep you informed of when we plan one, so you can decide if you want to join us. 11 For sale, 2006 Harley Street Glide, one owner, 34,000 miles, $10,500. For more details call Ray Cardwell A little humor to brighten your day Where did that saying come from? In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem... how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a Monkey with 16 round indentations. However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make Brass Monkeys. Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey. Thus, it was quite literally, Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey. (All this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn t you?) Why are zero scores in tennis called love? BECAUSE in France, where tennis became popular, the round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called l oeuf, which is French for the egg. When tennis was introduced in the US, Americans (naturally), mispronounced it love. Why do ships and aircraft use mayday as their call for help? BECAUSE this comes from the French word m aidez - meaning help me - and is pronounced, approximately, mayday. Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called passing the buck? BECAUSE in card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing, he would pass the buck to the next player. Why are people in the public eye said to be in the limelight? BECAUSE invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, a performer in the limelight was the Centre of attention. Why is someone who is feeling great on cloud nine? BECAUSE types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud. If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares. Jul 2017, Page 11 of 16
