Our family has lived at Holiday Lake (1160 E. Ridge Drive) for six years and my wife s relatives have been property owners here since the early years of its existence. As year round residents we enjoy the seasonal changes, boating/fishing, viewing all the wildlife and meeting new neighbors and lake residents. Like others, we enjoy our golf cart rides around the lake, seeing new home construction and visiting with friends and relatives. Holiday Lake has grown tremendously in the years we ve lived here and is growing even more as others come to realize that this is a great place for their families to live and play. And with this growth come many responsibilities and important decisions that need to be addressed by Holiday Lake property owners. All property owners and the lake s Board of Directors must share in making these decisions and determining its future. Every Holiday Lake property owner should have a voice. Not just a chosen few. Never told to sit down and shut up because they were not allowed to speak. As Unit One representative, I will never tell anyone that they do not have a voice or to shut up and sit down. I will listen to everyone s suggestions, complaints and/or concerns, no matter who you are or in what unit you own property. There will be no hidden deals or agendas. For you Internet users I will create a personal web page (with blog) where property owner can communicate and correspond. I ll be accessible no matter how you want to communicateö in person, on the phone or online. My wife Elizabeth is Unit One representative and board secretary on the Holiday Lake Board of Directors and in August her 3-year term will end. She tried to create a working budget, working within that budget and being a voice for all lake residents. Was she frustrated at times? Yes. But Liz has always fought for what she thought was fair and right. I applaud her effort. As a brief backgrounder, we are Iowa natives and September marks our 41st wedding anniversary. We have one son, Keats, who is married with two children and living in Cedar Rapids. Since high school I ve been in the communications and printing fields, starting out as a writer and photographer for the high school newspaper and working at my hometown newspaper, photography and print shop. After college I was employed for over ten years at the Waterloo continued on page 4

We eventually moved back to eastern Iowa where most of our family lives. Twenty years later I took early retirement from The University of Iowa. My former office (a Division of University Relations) is a public relations, marketing and publications office for the Health Science Colleges. My responsibilities included managing the department s publications and printing, departmental budgets, university accounting and bookkeeping systems, university expediter and purchaser, personnel, created/managed databases and created/managed websites. Since retirement I ve worked part-time in The University of Iowa s College of Education. Over the years I ve attended, covered, written news reports, done interviews and participated in 100 s of city council, school board and county supervisor meetings. I ve been a member of many community and civic groups, and served on numerous local, county and university committees. For the past few years I ve been a member of the Holiday Lake Community Center Building Fund Committee. And for over two years I volunteered my services as the Holiday Lake Webmaster, photographer and editor of the lakes newsletter. If you would like to discuss the lake and/or my candidacy please give me a call at (319) , stop by the house, or send an message to the following address:. I thank everyone in advance for your vote and support. I have a Chemistry Degree from St. Ambrose University and a Masters in Education from Viterbo University in LaCrosse, WI. I had taught for 15 years before having children, stayed home raising children for 18 years and then returned to teaching for 11 years. I currently substitute teach occasionally and baby-sit grandkids. My husband Bob and I have been married for 31 years and have 4 wonderful children. Bob s family purchased the original cabin in 1966 and so I ve been coming to Holiday Lake for 31 years. We came every weekend with our kids and have developed the feeling that this is home for us a close second to our home in Des Moines. In 2003 we remodeled the cabin to make a year-round home, which we now come to on weekends all year long. (Our home was in the 2006 Tour of Homes) While our children were growing up, I served as PTA president and then treasurer at the elementary school, a 3-yr member of the School Based Council at the Middle School, and 6 years as treasurer of the High School Booster Club. I also served on the DM City PTA Board several years as a member, one year as treasurer and on the State PTA Board 2 years as a member. Besides the school involvement, Bob and I have been active members with staff at our church. We have a vested interest in Holiday Lake and I would like to serve on the Board in order to continue to improve the quality of life here. I think the Board Members should be stewards of the association, managing our yearly lot assessments so that Holiday Lake continues to be the pleasant and fun resort of which we are so proud. In addition, all land recreational vehicles must follow and obey the road rules and signs. Any vehicle that is driven or ridden after dark must have the proper lighting. Example: ATV, Golf Cart, etc. must have a headlight and taillight or reflector. The recommended age for operating ATV is 16 years old, and a safety certificate is required. The recommended age for driving a golf cart is 14 years of age. All recreational activities at the lake such as swimming, boating, and 4-wheeling, are at your own risk. Current RV stickers must be displayed (one on each side or front and back). Please respect the safety of all others, as well as yourself, as you enjoy these activities. Remember that you are not to trespass on private property. The speed limit is 25 miles per hour or less. When driving safely on the roads, take into account the sight distance, road conditions, oncoming traffic, pedestrians, and lake occupants. RED FLAG ALERT If a red flag is in place of the American Flag on the dam, this signifies that there is to be no wake due to high water. JET SKI HOURS Jet Ski hours are 8am 8pm Monday through Saturday, and 8am-2pm on Sundays and holidays. Jet skis are allowed after 8pm with no wake and before dark. RECYCLE BIN Please note: NO plastic bags, packing peanuts, or trash/garbage (example: used paper towels) in the bin. Also, glass needs to be clear, with no colored glass. If these items continue to be thrown in the recycle bin, we will have to consider discontinuing its use. Bins are available for: metal, paper, magazines, broken down cardboard, and number one and two plastic bins. Please rinse or wash out cans, plastic, and glass. By taking time to recycle, you are helping future generations. Recycle Bin: Located at the office inside the fenced in area and available during normal business hours. POP CAN FUND All money from the collection of Iowa refundable cans and bottles goes for funding the fireworks display as well as the donations taken at the gates. Please empty cans and bottles and keep in separate containers using Iowa refundable cans and bottles only. No tea or water bottles are allowed. If you wish to make a donation to the fireworks fund, please make checks payable to Holiday Lake Owners Association. About 40% of the donations for the display came from the collection of cans and bottles. Gate collections and other donations through out the year make up the difference for the great display. We would like to thank all of you who have contributed. VISIT THE COMMUNICATION BOARD Don t forget to visit the communication board located at the base of the damn. We will continue to keep you updated with new information and upcoming events. A few years ago I bought a couple of lots to camp on. I liked it out here so much that I bought a house here to live in year around. My son and his family visit often and where can you ride golf carts and quads on the roads without getting a ticket. The reason I am running is to get more involved in the community. Audrey Brickman Unit Four Unit 4 Lots 81,82,83,85 I moved to the lake over 8 years ago and will be here til I die. I am the mother of one of the cutest Chihuahuas ever born named Cinco and my old faithful Chihuahua, Moosie. I often get asked what I am doing for the weekend. My reply is that I will be staying home because Holiday Lake is where people come to enjoy life, I live here year around. I started working at Amana Refrigeration approximately 35 years ago. For 31 years I have been in a management/supervisory position in production. A very strong part of my job is working with people. During these years I have worked with many kinds of people, young and old, grumpy and happy, sad, and about every other type you can think of. Another major portion of my job is working with budgets and numerous goals on a daily basis. I am also on the team that sets the goals for the future. I am also a member of the Union/Company Partnership Team as one of the company members working with union workers to better the working relationship not only between the company and union but also with the community. I am responsible for 80+ people, their safety, quality and general production. I feel this gives me experience that would enable me to work with the other board members and owners of the lake to have the continuous improvement at the lake we would all like to see. One thing I have learned through the years, you can accomplish more if everyone is pulling in the same direction. I feel everyone would like the lake to continue being the place where we can all enjoy whether it is on the weekend, vacation time, or everyday living. Not one person will do this alone. My goal is to listen and let your voice be heard. Brian Nicholas Unit Four Unit 4 Lot 207 My family and I have been involved with Holiday Lake for several years. My wife, Amy, has been involved in the selection and setup of the playground equipment for the Park. While my two sons, Connor and Taylor, enjoy the many activities that the lake has to offer. I m currently employed at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids. My responsibilities at Rockwell Collins as a Program Manager include financial reporting, technical design and planning of programs. My background includes a Bachelor s degree in Engineering and Master s Degree in Business. As a current representative for unit 4, I have served as President and Vice President of the Holiday Lake board. During this time period, my accomplishments include: Developed a budget to pay off the obligated loan, which has been paid in full Established the Spring meeting for members to ask questions continued on page 6

6 Page 6 Page 11 Continued from page 5 Supported the Bulletin board at Powell Park for communication Improvements at the Park and Beach area with benches, tables and trees The goal for my next term would be to work with the existing and new board members to continue the improvements that have taken place over the past few years and include others such as: Continue the communications by working with the advisory committee to develop a quarterly reporting of the financials, to provide to the Lake members Establish a plan to identify future projects (i.e. Road improvements, Water/Park improvements, equipment upgrades and etc.) to provide to the Lake members Continuing the Recreational Parks and Beach improvements of playground equipment and landscaping dècor I have enjoyed being able to experience the many things the lake has to offer from the friends and neighbors to the many activities that are only available here at the lake. Charles Aiels At-Large Unit 6 Lots 149,150,152,153,179 I ve lived at Holiday Lake for the past three years (6149 Waukonda Drive, Unit 6) and I m looking forward to enjoying living many more years here and eventually becoming a year round resident. Three months after graduating from Cedar Rapids Washington High School in May of 1969, I ve been employed at Quaker Oats as a multi-crafts machinist and union member. I ve seen lots of changes during that time some good and some not so good. Over the years I ve learned and gained many skills in areas that would be a benefit to the Board and the lake itself. During those same years I gained a lot of experience and insight into working with people and how to get projects done. I have lived in the Cedar Rapids area for many years and my employment background includes working at a large auction house for a number of years in addition to managing the family farm. Even after my mother s death I kept it running until eventually the family decided to sell it. As a board member I would like to see upgrades in road repairs and setting up a road plan and following that approved plan. Maybe consider appointing a committee person from each unit that would report to the Board regarding road areas that need repair, rock, graded, plowed, etc. As a multi-crafts machinist I would be able to assist in keeping equipment downtime to a minimum plus having the knowledge and ability to repair broken equipment and machinery. Also, offering my mechanical experience in helping to keep the dredge equipment working. I m a strong supporter of conservation and enjoy the wildlife that shares the lake with us. In addition to continuing with the improvements that have already been made I would like to represent property owners in keeping Holiday Lake a special place for all to enjoy. Maureen Hunt At Large Unit 3 Lots 35,36,40,41,42,43,217 My name is Maureen Hunt. I am running for board member at large position. Pancake Breakfast on September 2nd We will hold our 5th Annual Pancake Breakfast from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the Sunday of the Labor Day weekend. This will once again be a free will donation. If you would like to be part of our crew for the day, just give Kim a call at (641) to get the shift and job of your choice. Look for more details as the Labor Day weekend approaches. Sometime ago, we had been asked what kind of a refrigerator we would like for the community center. On June 7, we took delivery of a new 25-cubic foot Maytag French Door Refrigerator. We can hardly wait to unveil it, which we hope is sooner rather than later. Thank You We want to say THANK YOU to everyone who has made donations toward the Holiday Lake Community Center project over the past 17 years. Even though we have surpassed our goal to break ground, and the building fund accounts now total $108,139, it will take additional funds and a little hard work to bring this project to a successful completion. Please continue to donate and support our fundraising efforts. Everyone on this committee, like all of you, cannot wait for the Holiday Lake Community Center to become a reality. If everything goes smoothly, and we hope it will, we would love to be able to hold this year s pancake breakfast indoors. Garbage Pick-up Reminder: All lot owners are responsible for their own garbage. You may take it with you, or contact Audas Sanitation & Recycling (Monday morning pick-up), located in Montezuma, at for details. My husband Bob and I have been full time residents of Holiday Lake for 11 years. I work in Marshalltown as an Assistant Director of Iowa School of Beauty for 26 years. We have four married children; three are members of Holiday Lake. continued on page 7

7 Page 10 Page 7 Continued from page 6 There were several complaints received about passengers throwing water balloons and the squirting of water during the Golf Cart & ATV Cruise parade around the lake. If actions of this nature continue in the future, this event may be canceled. This is a parade, only tossing of candy and other lightweight objects are permitted. We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable time during our Independence Day Festivities. Let s not have the actions of a few ruin it for everyone else. Community Center Committee Update In case you haven t been around the lake recently and have not seen the future home of the Holiday Lake Community Center, we have finally broken ground. Our goal of $100K before we would break ground was reached in the latter part of 2006 and with the wet spring we have had, it delayed our ground breaking even more. Faas Construction of Brooklyn has prepared the building site for the foundation. Arlan Faas has donated all of his time spent on this task. Isn t it wonderful to see all those loads of dirt gone from their holding area and the building site beginning to take shape? We have finalized the plans and building specifications. We are currently seeking bids from the surrounding area for building materials. Once we have all the bids in, we will then make a decision as to which way to go with construction. From our meeting with the Poweshiek County Sanitarian and septic system contractors, we have received a design that should meet the expected use of the community center along with a bid. If you have a desire to get involved with the construction of the Holiday Lake Community Center, it is not too late. We have individuals that have already volunteered their services for plumbing and electrical. This is really appreciated as this will certainly help to keep our costs down. As we progress along, we will most likely need additional volunteers. If you are interested or know of someone who might be, please contact any committee member. What fundraising events are coming upö? Annual Bake Sale was held May 26th Even without matching funds this year, we were still able to raise $1,070 by selling baked goods, apparel and more. We wish to thank our great Holiday Lake bakers, the workers, and all of you who purchased the goodies for coming through again for us. My family first became Holiday Lake members on September 9, 1962, purchasing two lots on Franklin Drive. I can remember as a child driving across land where the lake is now and up the hills to pick out our lots. Those lots are still in my family today. I have seen a lot of change over the years as the lake has grown and prospered. The roads have greatly improved and the overall appearance of our lake has become outstanding. Construction has increased at a tremendous rate. If elected, I would do my best to represent all members of Holiday Lake. I would like to keep our lake a fun place for all ages and yet keep it safe for each and everyone of us. Safety is a great issue as our population continues growing. Keeping our waters clean and controlling algae must always be one of our top priorities. Our roads must continue to improve and be maintained. My goal is to keep maintenance fees as low as possible so everyone can afford to enjoy the lake. I would do my best to work with all board members and keep in mind what is in the best interest for everyone at Holiday Lake. As a board member, I would be happy to listen to any of your concerns and issues. All members of Holiday Lake are important in the success of our lake. My dream is that my children and grandchildren will always be able to enjoy and have the great memories as I do of Holiday Lake. Dennis Jones At Large Unit 5 Lots 173,174 Wife: Charlotte; Children: Jenifer age 13, Megan age 12, and Lydia age 19. High School 12; Tech School 2; Business Management 2 I own and operate three companies: Trucking, Freight Logistics, and Animal Feed and Bedding. My family and I enjoy everything there is to offer at Holiday Lake, fishing, boating, friends and the new people we meet. This is the best place for the kids. Everyone watches out for everybody else s kids. I am very interested in helping to keep Holiday Lake a very memorable place for family, kids and friends. Holiday Lake Apparel N More Have you seen the new screen-print design for the 45th Anniversary of Holiday Lake? If not, you need to check out the new shirts. On the back of them they say Holiday Lake 45 years of Something for Everyone. We have them available in tie-dye for youth and adult, as well as solid colors for the more timid adults. Remember that Holiday Lake Apparel N More is available year round at the Maintenance Office during regular business hours. This summer, look for the sign of our mobile shop at our events and when you are out and about. There are plenty of our past designs still available. If you can t find exactly what you are looking for, we would be happy to help you place your pre-paid order. Items ordered usually arrive within a few weeks. Just call Kim at (641) , if you have questions. Please Vote! You should make sure to exercise your voting rights, regardless of where your lot(s) are located.

8 Page 8 Page 9 Independence Day was celebrated on Saturday, June 30th and Sunday, July 1st. Fireworks: Following the boat parade and after dusk, everybody enjoyed the Holiday Lake fireworks display produced by Flashing Thunder Fireworks Spectacular. A BIG thank you to everybody that volunteered to collect fireworks donations at the gates throughout the day. Through your efforts, $5, was collected at the gates. The gate donations along with the monies received from the Iowa refundable cans and bottles dropped off at the maintenance shop and other donations throughout the year pretty well covered the total cost of our fireworks display. This year s fireworks display cost $10,000. We would like to thank all of you who have contributed throughout the year in one way or another to help us bring a great fireworks display to Holiday Lake for everybody in the area to enjoy. Paddle Boat Races: Saturday morning, the paddle boat races were held at the South Dock at 10 a.m. The hosts for this year s races were Ernie & Kathy Tomlinson and Mark & Fauna Nord. There were over 100 people that participated. The ages of the race categories ranged from 7 & Under with an adult, up through, 31 & over. It appeared everybody had a really good time, even the two who flipped their paddleboat at the end of their race! We wish to thank those who donated either prizes or money toward this year s races. Boat Parade: Saturday evening, the Holiday Lake tradition of the boat parade began from the South Dock at 8 p.m. Grand Marshals for the 2007 Boat Parade were Paul and Darlene Tursi. It is so easy to remember when we first invested in our lake property at Holiday Lake. Our fourth child, Liz, was 9 months old. That daughter is now going to be 44 years old in September. With a nine month old baby and three other children ages five, nine and twelve years old, our only vacation that year was daily trips to interesting places near our Des Moines home. Our fifth day we all drove to Holiday Lake with a packed lunch and diapers. We liked what we saw. The year was 1964 and we bought a lot on Clark near where the water was to be. After camping only on weekends on our new property, Darlene decided to stay home with the three girls until Paul built a shelter with plumbing. Our oldest, Scott, at twelve-years-old was quite the builder (and still is) like his father. The two of them built cabin number one that summer. After three years, we were approached by the Hubbards, an older couple who owned the lumber company in Brooklyn who wanted to sell their lake front lot just down from our cabin. Paul and Scott got busy again, and built our present cabin. We have remained in this place over all the years since Our little log cabin at Lakeshore and Clark has been host to all five kids and hundreds of their friends (we were blessed with another son, Christopher, in 1971) over the years. Sometimes we are bursting at the seams when the children come. We now number nineteen with spouses and eight grandchildren. Mostly it is just the two of us relaxing on weekends. We still reside in Des Moines and have retired from a retail clothing business. Everyone still loves coming to gramp s cabin, especially on Holidays! Golf Cart & ATV Cruise: Sunday afternoon brought about the Carnival Games and the Golf Cart & ATV Cruise, which were held at Powell Park. The winners of the Golf Cart & ATV cruise led the parade around Holiday Lake, which began at 3 p.m. Our expression of gratitude goes to Katie Tomlinson and Jim Clayton Jr. for organizing this event and their crew of judges and carneys. Thanks go out to the following sponsors for their donations toward prizes for the cruise and carnival games: Clayton Construction of Brooklyn Holiday Lake Owners Association Carl & Katie Tomlinson Drake Realty of Brooklyn J.C. & Patty Miller Jerry & Denise Vander Sanden Signs by Fisher of Brooklyn Andy & Amy Morrow David & Dixie Wade Young s Golf Cars, Inc. of Dysart Larry & Kim Pendarvis Prizes from the Paddle Boat Races Wade s Golf & Mow of Williamsburg Jim & Jeanine Thurston Kriegel Motorsports of Tama Everybody who attended had the opportunity to vote for the People s Choice selection. It was real close in the voting, but based on the votes cast, 1st place was awarded to the golf cart entry of Natalie M., Lexis P. and Danny D. as well as the ATV entry of Lisa Hagen. The other entries that received votes for People s Choice were David Leonard, Steve Brown, Dave Heath, Dave and Lindy Ehle, Jim Thurston, Brady Fritz, and Colin Betts. A panel of judges rated each entry in either the golf cart or ATV category based on the patriotic theme, originality, and curb appeal. After much deliberation, the top five in each category were announced. Golf Cart Winners were: 1st place Dave Heath 2nd place Nancy Agnew 3rd place Steve Brown 4th place Colin Betts 5th place Diana Fritz ATV Winners were: 1st place Brady Fritz 2nd place Tyler Scott 3rd place Chelle Clayton 4th place Austin Deimerly 5th place Tom Young During the carnival games, registration for the cruise, and the judging of the decorated entries, you had the chance to guess the number of Tootsie Rolls and the number of M&Ms in each jar. The person with the closest guess won the goodie-filled jar. Bruce Vander Sanden guessed correctly the number of Tootsie Rolls at 93. Jeff Michel was the closes to the actual number of M&Ms, which were 301. If you would be interested in making a monetary donation toward the 2008 Carnival Games and Golf Cart & ATV Cruise, a donation jar has been placed at the Maintenance Office to help defray the costs.
