DOCKS You may dock your watercraft to a dock or in a cove for a two hour time period while going to eat etc., but under no circumstance is your watercraft to be left there overnight. RECYCLE BIN Please note: NO plastic bags, packing peanuts, or trash/garbage (example: used paper towels) in the bin. Also, glass needs to be clear, with no colored glass. If these items continue to be thrown in the recycle bin, we will have to consider discontinuing its use. Bins are available for: metal, paper, magazines, broken down cardboard, and number one and two plastic bins. Please rinse or wash out cans, plastic, and glass. By taking time to recycle, you are helping future generations. Recycle Bin: Located at the office inside the fenced in area and available during normal business hours. POP CAN FUND All money from the collection of Iowa refundable cans and bottles goes for funding the fireworks display as well as the donations taken at the gates. Please empty cans and bottles and keep in separate containers using Iowa refundable cans and bottles only. No tea or water bottles are allowed. If you wish to make a donation to the fireworks fund, please make checks payable to Holiday Lake Owners Association. About 40% of the donations for the display came from the collection of cans and bottles. Gate collections and other donations through out the year make up the difference for the great display. We would like to thank all of you who have contributed. NEW COMMUNICATION BOARD Visit the new communication board located at the base of the dam. We will continue to keep you updated with new information and upcoming event. BROOKLYN BUILDING CENTER Make The Right Choice! QUALITY BUILDING MATERIALS Lumber Cabinets Doors Hardware Countertops Windows Plumbing Paint Siding Electrical Vinyl Decking Roofing BROOKLYN BUILDING CENTER 229 West Front Brooklyn, IA Phone: Fax: Page 3 Community Center Committee Update In our report at the Annual Meeting in August, we were just short of our goal to break ground by $7,600. Since then, between our fundraising efforts and your generous donations, we have surpassed that goal. The building fund account now totals $109,500. We figured that with inflation and the ever rising cost of materials, it would take at least $100K to get a facility that is enclosed with basic services. However, to get it finished and furnished as well as a little landscaping, it will take additional funds and a little hard work. Your continued donations are appreciated in order for the Community Center project of 17 years to be successfully completed. We are hoping to begin soon with the building site preparation. There is a lot of excavating and fill dirt to be moved before the foundation can be done. We have been working with our resident architect to tweak the floor plans so that we will have an accurate materials list to request bids from the surrounding area. We have also met with the Poweshiek County Sanitarian and contractors to discuss and design a septic system that will be adequate for the needs of the Community Center. We have individuals who have volunteered their services for the septic, leveling and packing of fill dirt, plumbing, and electrical. This is really appreciated as this will certainly help to keep our costs down. As progress continues, we will eventually need additional volunteers. If you are interested, or know of someone who might be, you may sign up at the Maintenance Office or contact any committee member. We will continue fund raising efforts by holding the Annual Bake Sale and Pancake Breakfast as well as selling Holiday Lake Apparel N More. Annual Bake Sale on May 26th We will start the Annual Bake Sale at 8 a.m. and plan to go until 2 p.m. or until everything is gone. If you are interested in providing baked items or working the day of the sale, please call the Maintenance Office. We will be calling for bakers beginning in May. Pancake Breakfast on September 2nd We will hold our 5th Annual Pancake Breakfast from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. This will once again be a free will donation. Look for more details as the Labor Day weekend approaches. Holiday Lake Apparel N More Is available year round at the Maintenance Office during regular business hours or look for the mobile shop at our events and during holidays. We are inquiring about doing a special design for the Holiday Lake 45th Anniversary. If you re looking for a specific size or color, and we don t have it, we would be happy to take your pre-paid order. Call Kim at if you have questions. THANK YOU to everyone who has helped with the fundraising efforts. We look forward to seeing everyone back this spring. The Holiday Lake Community Center Building Committee. The Holiday Lake Board of Directors will take whatever steps necessary to enforce the collection of fees that are delinquent. Emergency Response Committee: Holiday Lake Board of Directors is looking for full time residents to be on an Emergency Response Committee. These people would assist in directing ambulance or fire departments to emergency locations. If you are interested, please contact the office during normal business hours. Security In response to an overwhelming number of security concerns voiced during the past year, the board has decided to increase security at Holiday Lake. We have hired a professional security firm to be located at the lake entrances on major holidays and randomly throughout the summer. (the gates will be left open at all other times) During the times the entrances are being monitored, everyone will be stopped and asked to display their 2007 sticker. This includes vehicles and land & watercraft. (refer to land & watercraft registration 2007 for a detailed list) Please communicate these security spot checks with your family and friends who plan to visit. We recommend obtaining a guest pass in advance of their visit or plan to meet them at an entrance site that particular day. The board appreciates the concerns you have voiced regarding security, and we hope that these additional measures are a welcome to all Holiday Lake Lot Owners. We hope that these changes will reduce the number of unauthorized individuals from entering our lake and will help protect our properties. We all have the same goal which is to keep Holiday Lake a wonderful and safe place to live and play. Although our security patrol does routine checks during all hours of the day and night, we still ask for your assistance in monitoring the lake areas for any suspicious or mischievous behavior. If you see anything, please call one of the following: Poweshiek County Sheriffs Office (641) Holiday Lake Security Mark Baugh (641) If you have an emergency, please have someone meet the equipment at the entrance which is closest to you (if possible). This can save them time in trying to locate you. 911 signs can be ordered and picked up at the lake office. The cost is only $23.00, and these are very helpful to emergency personnel, friends, and family. Sirens are activated when there is severe weather moving into our area. We are notified by one or several agencies including: Poweshiek Co. Sheriffs Dept.-National Weather Service-Emergency Management Service-NOAA Radio. We have two sirens that will be activated when we are notified of a SEVERE THUN- DERSTORM WARNING or a TORNADO WARNING only. WATCHES will not activate the SIRENS. The sirens are for the safety of everyone, so please do not go outside to see what is happening. Go to the lowest point of your home such as a basement or under a stairway for your protection. If you do not have a basement, go to a closet or bathroom, and try to stay away from windows. Kneel down on the floor, and cover your head with either a blanket or pillows to protect yourself from injury. One siren is located on North Lakeshore by the boat ramp, and the other is on Holiday Lane at the turn around. If anyone is interested in becoming a storm watch spotter, please give us a call. Coordinator: M.R. Casey Clark (641) Asst. Coordinator: Joleen Beatty (641) Also, keep a flashlight, portable radio, and extra batteries on hand and in a place which is easy access in case of an emergency. Thank you and be safe, M.R. Casey Clark. Please Note: Sirens are for outside use only. If you want something for inside, they can be purchased at any radio outlet. Ask for NOAA Radio for inside. 7 Page 10 Page 7 Your Quality of Life. Your Iowa. Iowa s farmers are working everyday to protect the land, air and water quality for our future generations. Roads The Holiday Lake Board of Directors is asking that lot owners chip and seal their roads. After you have signed up and paid Manatts for the chip and seal, your road will be prepared in order to get it ready for the chip and seal. Any area that has not been chip and sealed and is breaking up after Manatt s is done will be torn up and returned to gravel. Just for a cost comparison, Benton County Dust Control is $900 for 400 feet. Shorelines Shorelines are a concern for Holiday Lake due to constant soil erosion. The Holiday Lake Board of Directors is asking homeowners to check their shorelines to see if there is sufficient protection against soil erosion. Some examples of proper shoreline protection are large rocks, landscape blocks, railroad ties, sand beaches, etc. After August 1, 2007 shorelines will be checked and a letter will be sent out to people who failed to have sufficient protection. If you are unsure if your shoreline is acceptable, please contact your unit representative or the office. The Holiday Lake Watershed Project is rolling along. We are proceeding with plans to install a basin just south of lots on Franklin Drive on John Banzhaf s property. John has been very helpful in working with the Poweshiek County conservation office and the Holiday Lake Assoc. to do what is best for the lake and the overall best environmental impact for the land. Due to funding regulations and requirements, the Holiday Lake Association was not able to put a basin on its own lots that would qualify for any funding assistance. Therefore, with Mr. Banzhaf s permission, we are able to design a much more efficient structure and spend our money more effectively. I hope everyone appreciates this. Thanks also goes out to the Watershed Improvement Review Board who has agreed to provide funds to assist with the conservation efforts in the Holiday Lake watershed area. Funding is also coming from the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP). EQIP is a voluntary conservation program of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) that promotes environmental quality. This program is available to private landowners and offers financial and technical assistance to install or implement structural and management practices on eligible land. We are also trying to get a basin project going on lots east of Fleur Drive to better control the water which is draining down the east side of the road. This fall we would like to meet with lot owners who are interested in installing a rain garden on their property. J.S., Poweshiek Co. 8 Page 8 What is a rain garden?a rain garden is a garden in a drainage area that is landscaped with perennial flowers and native vegetation that help soak up rainwater. It is located to capture runoff from roofs, parking lots, and streets. A rain garden is designed to fill with a few inches of water after a rain and then filter the water into the ground, rather than letting the water run off to a storm drain or ditch. A rain garden is a great way to naturally control runoff. To learn more please attend the Rain Garden Educational meeting on Saturday May 12 at 10:00 a.m. at the Powell Park. (before the spring meeting) Water Testing: Bruce Bauer has been assigned to take standing water assessments for: ph, Nitrite-N, Nitrate-N, Dissolved Oxygen, Phosphate and Chloride. To see results, log onto iowater.net or refer to the bulletin board located at the bottom of the dam. Select: Data Base, online data base, view data, you can select by county (Poweshiek) or by site number: Andy s; Beach and Boat Launch area; Duck Park; Unit 1 Lot 60; Unit 2 Lot 359; Unit 3 Lot 217; Unit 4 Lot 207. Dish Soap Dawn dish soap has many purposes. It can be used to neutralize gas and oil if it overflows when filling your boat. Also, if you use it in a hose hand sprayer on your lawn, it keeps the bugs away. Another tip for eliminating bugs is to put some water in a white dinner plate and add a couple of drops of Lemon Fresh Joy dish detergent. Set the dish on your porch, patio, or other outdoor area. For unknown reasons, the mosquitoes flock to it and drop dead shortly thereafter. Other helpful hints that everyone can help with include the following: keep yards mowed and remove any objects that collect and hold standing water such as tires, paddle boats and tarps. LAND RECREATIONAL VEHICLES Reminder: Orange flags are required and are to be mounted on the vehicle which extends not less than one foot above the top of the vehicle. In addition, all land recreational vehicles must follow and obey the road rules and signs. Any vehicle that is driven or ridden after dark must have the proper lighting. Example: ATV, Golf Cart, etc. must have a headlight and taillight or reflector. The recommended age for operating ATV is 16 years old, and a safety certificate is required. The recommended age for driving a golf cart is 14 years of age. All recreational activities at the lake such as swimming, boating, and 4-wheeling, are at your own risk. Current RV stickers must be displayed (one on each side or front and back). Please respect the safety of all others, as well as yourself, as you enjoy these activities. Remember that you are not to trespass on private property. The speed limit is 25 miles per hour or less. When driving safely on the roads, take into account the sight distance, road conditions, oncoming traffic, pedestrians, and lake occupants.
