1 The official newsletter of the published five times a year Volume 20 Issue 3 Summer 2012 Parades SW 4th of July Parade July 4, 10:00 am Paul Hieb contact Arlington 4th of July- Parade 4:00 pm staging 5:00 pm parade Harold Eastbury contact Lopez Island Caravan July 21, 2012 Details on page 3 John Deere Day Washington Tractor Lynden Saturday, July 7 8:00 am to 2:00 pm Barnett Implement Mount Vernon Parts Guys part 2 In the Winter edition of the Cascade Two Cylinder Club Newsletter we covered Dave Moores and Mike Taylor. Now we want to continue with their colleagues Steve Cruze and Lyle Archer. Steve Cruze Like the other parts guys at Barnett's, Steve is a local guy growing up in Burlington. He got his start with Holley's Auto Parts working for two years before moving on to Coastline Ford Tractor in Everett. He remembers the old computer card system and the paperback books for locating those parts! Steve started with Barnett Implement in the Snohomish store on October 15, 1996 in the golf and turf division. After 8 years, he moved to the Mount Vernon store. Steve doesn t have any farm background but really enjoys working with the old stuff. Give him a chance and he really enjoys researching the parts sources! The Cascade Two Cylinder Club members really appreciate the Barnett parts guys for coming up with an alternate parts source if Deere strikes out. That s good service! Steve says that the computer has worked into all aspects of the job and the newest technology involves the gps systems. This means more knowledge, more classes on how to deal with these systems. Steve wants to be a part of that. What can the collector do to help with locating those two cylinder parts. Model number is great and a lot of the collectors seem to have the old Deere parts catalogs. Besides the fun of research, Steve enjoys the family atmosphere at Barnett Implement. What makes Steve a special parts guy? Well he has lots of patience. Steve, you and the other parts men are appreciated for those qualities. Lyle Archer Lyle has been working as a John Deere parts man for 31 years. He says he started on April 1, 1981 and wonders about the significance of that April 1 day! He got his first job at age 18 with Gearhart Ford in downtown Mount Vernon. He next worked for Leitner Auto Electric which was known later as LAE. After 4 years and 4 months in the US Navy, Lyle got a job in the parts department with NC Machinery. He worked there for 13 years moving from parts man to parts manager. After some company downsizing, Lyle left and worked briefly for Skagit Gardens building greenhouses. Missing the parts business, Lyle got a job with Cascade Tractor in Everett. After a few months in Everett, Jerry Rindal called from Barnett s Implement and then Lyle was working at the Barnett s Implement Snohomish store. That parts job involved agriculture parts, industrial, lawn and garden and eventually turf. Around May 1990 Lyle was given the opportunity to transfer to the Mount Vernon Barnett Implement store where he has worked ever since in the lawn and garden parts department. Lyle didn t grow up on a farm but his parents rented a house from a crop farmer. He remembers as a child the (Continued on page 4)
2 Page 2 Internet Users! Check out our web site club.org for pictures of club members in local events! Need Magnetic Tractor Signs? C as President s Message The shop tour went very well and everyone enjoyed Jack Hilde s shop and trucks. On to plow day, it took three Saturdays to get a good day, but it was worth the wait. It was a beautiful day with 16 tractors plowing about 90 acres with a great lunch. Thanks to all who helped. We had 10 tractors at the Farmers Day parade on June 2 in Lynden. Three more parades coming up, June 16 Berry Dairy Day in Burlington and the 4th of July in Sedro-Woolley and Arlington. Our summer caravan is July 21 to Lopez Island. More in this newsletter about time and cost. Make sure you have lights, good brakes and a slow moving sign on the back of your tractor and at least a 10 mph tractor. See you at the next parade! Paul Hieb, President Call Greg Greenfield $25 Minne Vander Hoek. Under the guidance of Loren Dahl, a work day was conducted with Alan Brinson, Ray Riggles, Phil Smoots, Les Faber, Van Osborne, and Paul Hieb. The horse mower was cleaned and surface rust conditioned with a metal preservative. Morrie Robinson says that preserving the old look (patina) with out scratching the metal promotes the value of the antique. The mower will be displayed in the museum at the P.S.A.T.&M.A. show grounds near Lynden. Loren has also completed a John Deere horse cultivator to be on display. John Deere model 40 and cultivator Separating the Chaff from the Grain Plow Day 2012! Got er done on May 12 at the Gail Thulen farm off the La Conner Whitney road. It was a beautiful, sunny Skagit Valley day with the ground just dry enough to plow. Check our website Cascadetwocylinderclub.org for pictures. Dain hay mower! The Club scored with a donation of a real antique Dain horse hay mower donated by club member Pedal tractor donation Tom Jensen has donated a classic John Deere pedal tractor which will be detailed and raffled at the P.S.A.T.&M.S.show in Lynden this summer. This is a great fund raiser for the Club so buy tickets! John Deere pedal tractors are highly valued collectables. John Deere Day! Washington Tractor aka North Washington Implement, Lynden is holding the annual John Deere Day Saturday, July 7. Owner Jim Hale has invited classic Deeres from our Club. Tractors should be on display from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Help support them! Burlington Berry Dairy Day parade Yes it rained but 17 classic Deere and owners braved the weather! Good Burlington crowd. Check the club website cascadetwocylinderclub.org for photos.

Lyle would like to own a Deere tractor someday but hasn t had the need or opportunity. Lyle s life is really the parts department and his family. The computer age first entered Lyle s life in Technology can be overwhelming but it is part of our life. In Lyle s time working with Deere, he has noticed that the corporate Deere doesn t seem to care for the people in the dealership as they once did! It s too bad but maybe things will turn around. They make a great product! Some of the more enjoyable features of the job is helping people with their needs and working with a great group of people. This seems to be a common theme with the employees at Barnett Implement. The lawn and garden parts folks don t have too much opportunity working with the classic two cylinder crowd much but if you have lawnmower needs the model number and serial number really help. Lyle really enjoys working with the customers and it is rewarding when he can take an angry person and make them happy! Lyle says that people want to know when he is going to retire to which he replies, It s a life sentence! Like most people he says that he might retire someday when he gets a few more bills paid off and he can find that fishing pole! Lyle says that he and his wife Dee believe that God put us here to help each other and others. ajohnson Meeting Minutes General Meeting April 21, 2012 Washington Tractor Lynden, WA Meeting called to order at 10:12 AM by Paul Hieb, President.
