Even with cold weather and plentiful rain the first part of this year, the group has been active and now we look for warm weather just around the corner. The club workshop is being kept busy with bead making classes, silversmithing projects and lots of lapidary cutting and polishing in the back shop. A beginning wire wrapping class is beginning soon. We have field trips lined up and a rock swap coming in March. So, keep your boots and tools handy and join the fun. The club is looking at sources of high quality graphics printing for new SGMS club T-shirts. New logo shirts are good for identifying ourselves and building club spirit. 2 The RocToc March of 10 Minutes of the club meeting February 10, The club meeting was called to order by President Leedy at 7:00 with the flag salute. Our special guests, The Loyson family, were introduced. An item of concern regarding the failure to mail the Roc Toc in a timely manner was mentioned. This prevented the regular and board meeting minute review; however, they were available in the Roc Toc online. Billie E mentioned that the By-Laws are available to all club members. Mary Colbert provided the Treasurer s Report, printed on this page. Hugh Watson provided a field trip report as seen in the February RocToc. The next field trip is February 22, 2017 to the Black Butte Reservoir. Those interested will meet at 9:00AM at the shop. It was announced that the wire wrap classes are now full. Steve Puderbaugh gave a presentation on the need to be educated about fake gems and minerals. He said we should see him to discuss methods to tell the fakes" from the real stones as 90% of the current material from China fake. Alan Leedy presented the club recognition board with the following new names: William, Doc Shadish; Max Moore, and Bill Seward. Marianne Sweetwood shared some of the treasures that she purchased from the Quartzite Gem Show. She suggested that we should try to attend the show because it is an amazing event for viewing and purchasing gems and minerals. The meeting adjourned at 7:40, followed by the raffle. 3 The RocToc March of 10 SGMS Board of Directors minutes of 2/21/17 The meeting was called to order by President Leedy at 6pm. Board members present: Leedy, Sweetwood, Colbert, Evans, Foster, Gutkowski. Members present: Pat Foster, Glen Miller, Eric Sweetwood. Jeanine Johansen presented a proposal for H&R Block s Nonprofit Referral Program. The presentation was discussed and the board deemed it a conflict of interest for the club to participate based on the Conflict of Interest By Laws of the Shasta Gem and Mineral Society, Inc. Further discussion tabled until next meeting. Alan L gave board members copies of a General Meeting Revised agenda to be used during future club meetings. The wire wrap class schedule is posted at the shop and will be in the RocToc. There are openings for these classes. Alan is proposing a new club T-shirt design. Alan L is working on this and will present options for the screen print. The shirts will be printed in one color, on good quality fabric, to keep the cost down. The BOD is considering improvements to raffle item quality and to assist Gabby with the routine. Alan L, Marianne S and Glen M agreed to organize items purchased for the raffle. They will inventory, sort and organize items by month and store everything at Alan L s home. It was suggested that the quality of raffle items will be improved and the number of items for each night be limited, to maintain audience attention and limit the time spent on this activity. The importance of an improved PA system and a whiteboard to write the numbers was also given important consideration. Marianne Sweetwood moved that the Board purchase a whiteboard to use for raffles and general messages. The motion included purchase of a new PA system. These purchases are to be made by Glen Miller. The budget for the two items is $ The motion was seconded by Mary C seconded the motion and it was approved unanimously. Show enhancements and ways to improve the educational aspects of the children s program were discussed. Suggestions included: Provision for a DVD area for family viewing at the rock show, enhanced projects with lesson plans for the children, publication of the program for children in the the local newspaper s monthly activity schedule. It was also proposed that no non mineral prizes be used in the children s activities during the show. Workshop staffing was given consideration from the standpoint of enforcement safety rules. Jan G suggested that it is important that an adult be present with children at all times. The board discussed the current need to try to be proactive to support all policies of education and safety. A review of all operations with shop manager Steve Puderbaugh and the workshop stewards is considered a primary concern. 4 The RocToc March of 10 March 2017 of 10 March Birthstones Aquamarine, the birthstone gem of March, has a rich color and has long been a symbol of youth, health and hope. Its mesmerizing color ranges from pale to deep blue and are reminiscent of the sea. Aquamarine is most often light in tone and ranges from greenish blue to blue-green; the color usually is more intense in larger stones, and darker blue stones are very valuable. This gemstone is mined mainly in Brazil, but also is found in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, and Mozambique. Like emeralds, this gemstone is actually a variety of a mineral called beryl. Large stones have been found all over the world, including one stone found in Brazil that weighed over 240 pounds. Aquamarine grows in large, six-sided crystals that can be up to a foot long, making it a great gem to be cut and polished in larger carats for statement pieces. Not only is aquamarine one of the March birthstones, it s also used to celebrate 19 th wedding anniversaries. Bloodstone, the second birthstone for March is a dark-green stone flecked with vivid red spots of iron oxide. Generally found embedded in rocks or in riverbeds as pebbles, primary sources for this stone are India, Brazil, and Australia. Bloodstone is also called heliotrope, a word from the ancient Greek that means to turn the sun. Many believe it was probably named such because of ancient ideas about how minerals reflect light. In fact, some believed that the sun itself would turn red if this stone was put into water. Bloodstone is sometimes also known as another name, Blood Jasper. But really these stones are chalcedony, a crypto crystalline quartz. There are two forms of bloodstone: one is more transparent (heliotrope) with red spots while the other is more opaque (plasma) and has little or no red spots. For those looking for a good quality bloodstone, it is generally considered that a solid green color with visible veins of red is best. It also comes in many shapes and cuts including traditional cuts like emerald, oval, and cushion. Bloodstone may not have the overt beauty of aquamarine, but many prize this stone for its symbolism and other properties.

6 The RocToc March of 10 Safety Matters: Seeing the Light? by Ellery Borow, AFMS Safety Chair; Feb Newsletter If you are seeing the light, the ultra violet (UV) light that is, there may be a problem. Many of the shows I visit offer a display / exhibit / darkened booth for show patrons to see the amazing effects of ultra violet reactive minerals. These displays are awe inspiring at shows because they offer a view of minerals and rocks most folks never have the opportunity to see. While many of the UV exhibits I have seen offer sufficient safe guards for the public, some could be better at protecting the general public and club members working the display. In your exhibit are folks provided with sufficient eye protection and bare skin protection? Is sufficient attention being paid to reflective surfaces? Are the lights angled sufficiently well to illuminate the minerals and rocks and keep the UV rays out of patron s eyes? Even short term exposures to UV can have harmful effects. One of the examples I like to cite is about UV reflections. Just as we can be burned by sunlight reflecting off snow, water or sand, the same can happen on a smaller scale in a show s UV mineral booth. UV can be reflected by some mineral surfaces up onto the bare skin and unprotected eyes of show patrons and club members tending to the booth. Under most circumstances the amount of exposure is relatively minimal, except for those who remain in the booth for extended periods of time - such as the folks tending to the booth and those curious show patrons who just can t get enough of the beauty and curiosity of UV illuminated minerals. Some suggested solutions to UV overexposure include: Wear eye protection for extended viewing or working in the vicinity of UV light Wear sunscreen protection on exposed skin Minimize reflections of UV light toward viewers - reflections may come from the display material and / or the minerals themselves Angle the UV lights so no one, especially small children, can kneel down and look up into the UV lamp housing or bulbs Offer temporary protective eye-wear to patrons who wish to use it, even if for short exposure times Take periodic breaks from being under strong UV illumination. We encourage shows to offer exhibits of UV minerals and rocks because such displays always seem to be a great attraction. We also encourage sufficient protections and safeguards be utilized with such exhibits. As always, we hope you see the light, because your safety matters. SGMS plans to have an ultraviolet light mineral display for the October 2017 show. Planning for the case and the lightproof enclosure will take care to minimize viewers exposure to either direct or reflected UV light.
