1 The Flypaper Promoting Sport Aviation in Central Illinois for More Than 50 years Chapter Program: Oshkosh De-Brief Tool of the Month Video Go Vikings? Project Reports Flying Reports Refreshments! Tool Crib Report Upcoming Safety Seminar Synergy s Open House Chapter Housekeeping Inside this issue: Oshkosh De-brief Topic of August Meeting At this Thursdays monthly Chapter Don O Neall meeting, we ll take some time to find out about YOUR Oshkosh experience this year. We were well represented at the event, with many Chapter members spending several days enjoying AirVenture. More specifically, we d like to accomplish three things 1. Find out what you found of interest. August, 2013 If you have photos you d like to share, please get experiences even greater as a result of this event. Stinson Donated to Chapter 2 OSHKOSH 2-4 Fuel Prices 5 2. Are there any lessons that we might use in the continued building of our Chapter or sport aviation? 3. What should we plan to do for next year s event? them to me, or Keith Doornbos prior to the meeting, so we can include them in the presentation. Let s use our collective brainpower to help each other make our aviation See you Thursday, August 15th, at 7:00 at the Chapter Hangar facility, F-15, at the Central Illinois Regional Airport. Vice president s Column Photos of AirVenture 2013 Ben s Engine is HERE! Calendar 6 Thousands of attendees had the same reaction Disney s new movie, Planes is a big hit! The estimated crowd of 15,000 people saw the Planes a Big Hit at Oshkosh first pubic premiere of the movie, which features an Air Tractor named appropriately, Dusty that wants to be a racer. The careful attention to aviation detail was an often remarked comment by attendees. Watch for it in the local theatres go see it, and be a kid again!!

2 Page 2 The Flypaper Donald and Donna Haley Donate Stinson Project to Chapter By Jack Holland Chapter 129 thanks Donald and Donna Haley for their generous donation of their 1949 Stinson project. The Halley s have had the project for nearly 20 years. Donnie always thought he would find time to restore the aircraft. However, when you fly for a living and wrench on airplanes for a living, your personal projects easily get pushed back. Donnie has accepted a new job in Savannah Ga. starting Aug. 5, 2013 and decided not to the move the project. They decided to donate the project to our Chapter. With the help of two friends and the Haley s I took a truck and trailer to their home is Astoria and loaded most everything. I couldn t get everything loaded, what wouldn t fit Donnie loaded in his truck. We brought it all to my hanger at McLean and unloaded. We then took pictures and put it on Barnstormers. The project sold in four days. The buyer is Kyle Stoutenborough from Spencer IA. Kyle has a Stinson and now has lots of parts to keep his aircraft on the air. Thanks to the Haley s we have $5000 to bolster our bank account and put to good use. AirVenture 2013 Setting a New Standard Chapter Minutes, con t from page 4 It is hard to find any fault with this year s AirVenture. Perhaps the beginning days were a bit too cool, but the rest of the week enjoyed fair skies and mild temperatures. The attendance was on a par with previous years, in spite of the near total absence of the military, due to the misguided Sequestration cuts. The premiere of the Disney movie, Planes was a high hit, with an estimated 15,000 people in attendance. The previous record attendance was about 6,000. The movie was well done, with accurate depictions of aviation, wrapped up in an animated setting featuring an Air Tractor named appropriately, Dusty. Two night shows were held at the event, and they pleased record evening crowds. Safety, always a focus of the event, was excellent with no serious accidents reported. And, there were plenty of new things to see. Perhaps one of the most vivid was the WWII fighter on display that had just been recov- past even had about 50 planes along both sides of the runway. The suggestion was made to look into the possibility of Voice Over I.P. (VOIP) as an alternative for the current telephone line. A discussion will be held at the next meeting as to how to proceed with the current telephone situation. New Business: Lary Hatfield and Jack Holland will be part of the nominating committee for the nomination of 2014 Chapter Officers. They agreed to provide a list of candidates for the October Chapter meeting and elections will be held at the November Chapter meeting. Rich Anderson announced that Synergy Flight Center will host an Aviation Open House on August 24 th. They would like to have a static display of aircraft for the general public. The will also host activities for children. They are currently in the process of putting together the details. Chapter 129 will host a table with Chapter information as well as Young Eagle information. Lary Hatfield will work with Synergy to coordinate Chapter activities at the event. At the next Chapter meeting, there will be a discussion of hangar maintenance. The goal will be to create a welcoming space for both members and guests. 5 Vice-president s Column by Don O Neall $ Fuel $ Page 5 Here is the situation: You are attending some type of informal social gathering and someone says I hear they are closing the tower at the airport. How will the airplanes land if they don t have a tower? You look around and it becomes apparent that you are the OPITR (The only pilot in the room). Do you (A), Quietly put your head down and slip over to the punch bowl for a refill because you figure they just don t understand aviation, (B), since someone else brought it up use the opportunity to let everyone know you are a pilot and begin to tell stories about your flying experiences and tales of daring as you fly above the clouds, or (C), step forward and proudly announce that you are a pilot and explain the reality of the situation in terms that all can understand? Being the OPITR is a privilege, but may also carry certain responsibilities with it. Especially if you are a member of the EAA. As a member of EAA, you are an ambassador at large representing the whole of the aviation community. Will the general public form opinions about aviation based on what they see in you, a member of EAA? I had the privilege of attending AirVenture for a couple of days. AirVenture, as you all know, is the showcase of general aviation. I have been following the changes at the top in the EAA national leadership and can report that I am well pleased with what I have observed first hand. I had an opportunity to meet Jack Pelton, EAA interim president, in an informal setting one evening and watched him in action the next day in a very structured setting as he conducted the annual meeting of the EAA, and later that same day in a presentation ceremony. In all cases, Jack represented himself and the EAA in an exemplary fashion. He appears to me to be a very genuine and sincere person, that conducts business in an open and transparent manner, even when he is not the OPITR. He has the respect of his peers. My impression is that Jack is an ambassador for aviation that will cause good things to happen for us all. One of the points that was very clear is that at the national level EAA recognizes that our membership will certainly begin to decline quit rapidly if we don t start bringing in new members. So what is the point? The point is that as members, we are all ambassadors, and we have the responsibility to speak well of aviation and the positive effects it has on our community, to express our gratitude for the privilege of being a pilot or aviation enthusiast, to talk about the heritage of aviation in the past the your hopes for the future, to listen to others about their concerns or questions about aviation and offer answers or address their concerns, and off course, invite your friends and neighbors to attend some of our activities. Or even better, bring them with you and introduce them to the rest of us. Who knows, one day they may like to become a pilot in our room. Don O Neall, VP EAA Chapter 129 Bloomington, IL BMI-Image $6.69 Pontiac $6.25 Champaign $6.90 Peoria $6.26 Lincoln $5.65 ss Decatur $6.74 Pekin $5.60 Lacon $5.95 ss As of 8/10/2013 Source-Airnav.com Tool of the Month The Tool of the Month for August is???...uh.its a mystery!! Toolmaster Jack Holland says it ll be a surprise on Thursday night when he puts it up for raffle!! Regardless of what it is, it only costs a buck how can you go wrong? Ben s Highlander Super STOL Engine has Arrived!! Just before Oshkosh, Ben Schneider received a most welcomed package it was his brand-new Rotax 912 engine. It will fit the Highlander Super STOL he s building. If you recall, Ben had previously acquired a used engine, but he decided to go with a new unit. He sold the used one, and acquired a brand-new zero time engine. Part of the fun was getting the power plant to Central Illinois but that was solved when the vendor said he could deliver the engine on his way to Oshkosh. Ben elected not to go with the newly released fuel injected engine, but stayed with the conventional carbureted unit. With Ben s rapid progress on covering and painting, it won t be long before he ll no longer have to make engine noises himself he can let the Rotax do it!!
