The plan for the meeting was to work on the art panels that will be erected in a public area in Alva. No report was sent in about the meeting but I understand that they had a very productive meeting. They finished welding up the remaining panels and are making arrangements to get them painted. Sometime in the future they will be put up in a public area in Alva. If you have any more information concerning this project, please send it in to the editor. SOUTH/CENTRAL MEETING The November meeting hosted by Bill and Diana Davis was well attended. The day started out cool and breezy but that didn t stop several from firing up the forges and heating up metal. We had several new members and a couple visitors that were very interested in the forging. There were about 40 or so attending the meeting. At noon everyone enjoyed some smoked meat with baked beans and hot bread with several kinds of deserts. CALENDAR OF EVENTS NE Regional meeting- (Dec ) Hosted by Curtis Allen. No trade item. Bring your forges and come enjoy the day. Lunch provided. S/C Regional meeting- (Dec ) hosted by Larry Morefield in Medicine Park, Ok. The trade item is a Christmas ornament. NW Regional meeting- (Dec ) Hosted by John and Ruth Burns. Lunch provided. No trade item. Come and enjoy the day of fellowship and entertainment that John has provided. Look for Map in the back of this newsletter. *Unless someone hosts a meeting, the NW regional meetings will be held at Fairview. Please Do Not asks to hold a meeting on another regions date. If you need a different date, choose a weekend not set aside for another region. This does not apply for classes or workshops Editor After lunch the board members and all interested members gathered around the tables and held a critique session of the conference. The conversations centered on what went right with this year s conference and what changes are needed for next years. It was decided to have the conference at the Perry location again next year and the date will be October with setup being on Friday 13 th. December

4 Other decisions, like demonstrators and chairperson were left open for now but will need to be finalized ASAP so that information can be gotten out to the public. Jerry Cathy showing new member Cheryl Montgomery some forging tips. Gerald Franklin had gotten to visiting and had to get his fire going again. The trade item was a spoon and we had some really nice examples. I didn t get an exact count but I think that 8 or 9 members participated in the trade items this time. Around 3:30 or 4:00 everyone called it a day and packed up their forges and headed for home. Bill and I would like to thank everyone for coming especially those that came from Tulsa, Grove, Perry and points North and East. Diana an excellent noon meal. There were several forges going al day and quite a bit of teaching and mentoring at each one. We even had a pretty good tailgate sales area. I think Rex Scrudder learned not to use the back of Jerry Cathy s trailer for a workbench. Along with Jerry s tailgate sales items in the trailer, it was not long before we had most of Rex s tools marked with soapstone as being for sale too. I really could have used that nice $5 rounding hammer. On Saturday afternoon the Saltfork Board met to discuss the 2005 Conference, set the date/place for the 2006 Conference and to discuss what we need to do to improve (raise the educational bar) the 2006 Conference content. Mark you Calendars now; the Saltfork 2006 Annual Conference will be the weekend of October 14 and 15. We really aren t superstitious, so our set up day will be that Friday the 13 th of October. The conference site will again be the Noble County Fairgrounds in Perry, Ok. Several other club items were discussed. One of the major topics was how to bring more folks from outside the blacksmithing community (Saltfork members) to our Gallery and Auction of Artistic Iron Work. We are thinking of a Spring/Summer event possibly in the Brick Town area or Oklahoma City. We may be able to get some help with this from The Arts Group (TAG) or another art group. More about this later. I hope to see many of you at the December 3 rd Christmas meeting at John Burn s. Jim C. SHOP TIP OF THE MONTH If your cutting plate is shorter than the metal being cut, you may have problems getting a straight cut. Make a narrow plate for the heel of your anvil. The metal is easier to cut if it lays flat Notes from Jim C. Thanks very much to Diana and Bill Davis for hosting the November Saltfork meeting. We had a good crowd including several new members and Thanks Jim C. for that Tip December

5 DEMO FOR THE VETERANS By Gerald Franklin On November 2, I did a demo at the Lawton/Fort Sill Veterans Center in Lawton, OK. This was a unique event for me since it was not necessarily a public event, but was held at the facility specifically for the residents of the center. In case you are not familiar with this Veterans Center, it is relatively new and houses about 200 veterans under the care of the Veterans Administration. Many of them have health conditions that will not allow them to travel to a demo outside the facility. I set up on one of the patio areas convenient to one of the major entrances so that the residents could come and go at will. The demo items were very simple but quick, as the idea was to expose the folks to a variety of forge techniques in a short time. We started with a simple S-Hook and then progressed to a series of leaves from 3/8 round stock. Leaves were finished in different fashions to show that smiths have a variety of ways to make similar, but different appearing items from the same stock. I left a few of the leaves that were finished into key fobs with the recreation staff to be used as Bingo prizes in the future. I invited the staff to bring some residents to our South/Central meeting in March Hopefully it will work out that some of the vets can come to that meeting, so plan to come to the Franklin place with your portable forges for a good gathering on March 18, December
