1 SDKCA Soddy Daisy Knife Collectors Association March, 2017 A Message from the President President's message March, 2017 Greetings to all our club members and friends Frank Parham (423) fmparham1@gmail.com Upcoming Knife Shows At our February meeting the club voted to attend and have a table at the Spirit of Steel Knife Roadshow in Dalton, GA at the Trade and Convention Center on March 17 and 18. Club members who agreed to work the table are Jim Morgan, Ronald Franklin and Dewayne Buckner on Friday; and Mike Rhodes and David Phillips on Saturday. We would like to see all our club members and friends at this knife show, which is held once a year. There will be approximately 100 tables of knives at this show. Some of our members want the SDKCA to set up at the Shriners Gun Shows this year. Mike Rhodes has accepted the responsibility for the club knives, banner and membership application forms. Hopefully we can draw in some new members. We would like to see some type of club activity result from our attendance at these shows. Jim Morgan is doing an excellent job with our club newsletter, additionally we are saving money by sending it . Kenny Powell is handling the printing and mailing of 14 copies that are printed and hard mailed to members as opposed to it being sent electronically. This is taking to much of Kenny's time and is expensive for the club. I am asking the members who get hard copies to let Jim send the newsletter by and resolve this situation. We have tentative plans for our annual knife auction after the Dalton Knife Roadshow. Thanks to everyone, see you at our next club meeting on March 2. 4 Saint Patrick's Day in Ireland for Knife Owners In 1990 the Irish Oireachtas updated their knife laws, with the end result that carrying anything sharp or pointy is now illegal and subject to arrest. If you can prove that you had a good reason to carry it, you might be acquitted at trial. Good luck with that: it will take months and cost you tens of thousands of dollars. All of this imbecility is set forth in the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990: (1) Subject to subsections (2) and (3), where a person has with him in any public place any knife or any other article which has a blade or which is sharply pointed, he shall be guilty of an offence. (2) It shall be a defence for a person charged with an offence under subsection (1) to prove that he had good reason or lawful authority for having the article with him in a public place. (3) Without prejudice to the generality of subsection (2), it shall be a defence for a person charged with an offence under subsection (1) to prove that he had the article with him for use at work or for a recreational purpose. How many articles which have a blade or are sharply pointed can you think of? Pens, pencils, shovels, trowels, ice scrapers, chopsticks, rakes, screwdrivers, fine-nose pliers, tweezers, nail clippers, staples, scissors, toothpicks, and forks could all land you in jail in green Eire. When making your travel plans, it would be wise to remember which countries won t even let you carry a miniature Leatherman tool or Victorinox Solitaire in your pocket. Now that anything sharp or pointy is illegal, perhaps the Oiriechtas will outlaw flashlights next, because only burglars need them. Or rope? 4
