Big Sir -John Freel Little Sir Jake Solomon Secretary - Jim Breitmayer Ass t Sect y - Mike Kelly Treasurer - Paul Schofield Ass t Treas.- Chris Lewis A SIR PUBLICATION Luncheon Meeting: MARIN COUNTRY CLUB, NOVATO Fourth Tuesday of the month Happy Hour at 11:00 am, as always Editor/Publisher - Ron Kosciusko Attendance Committee Cashier - Glen Ohm Directors: Tom Brady Tom Culhane Tim Leveque Lou Painter Alan Thomas Doug Twitchell State President - Bobbie Hairston Region 10 Director - Jim Filippo Area 6 Governor - Bob Dimond MARIN COUNTY DECEMBER 2015 VOL. XLII NO. 12 OUR 42ND YEAR BIG SIR S MESSAGE As I hope you know, the November luncheon was our last at the Marin Country Club at least for a while. We are relocating to McGinnis Golf Club. Three other Marin branches already hold their luncheons at McGinnis and the reports are very good. The location in the Terra Linda area should be equally accessible to members from both North and South Marin. The food will be equally good, and both food and wine will be a little less costly than at MCC. I m looking forward to the change and hope you are too. Our new recruitment committee for 2016 is already off and running. They have great ideas and a sound action plan. So let s support their efforts. We introduced three new members in November, but we need many more. And once again, thank you all for making my stint as Big SIR so enjoyable. John Freel, Big Sir Reminder: There is no luncheon in December; that we have the Holiday party on December 10 th in lieu of the regular lunch. Also, the January luncheon will be at McInnis Golf Club on the 4 th Tuesday, January 26 th. Page 1
2 OCTOBER SPEAKER REVIEW As Director of the Department of Cultural and Visitor Services for the County of Marin, Gabriella Calicchio certainly has a lot on her plate, but she describes her job as "the best job in Marin County." "Cultural Services" is basically an umbrella term for various events and venues that Gabriella oversees, including the Marin County Fair, "Marin Center Presents," the Community Rental Facility, and the iconic (and soon to be, we hope, a World Heritage Site) Frank Lloyd Wright Marin County Civic Center. To many of us, perhaps, this is just a collection of buildings that rent out space for special events, but Gabriella has a much broader vision. She sees it as an opportunity "to raise the profile of the arts in the community," and she doesn't hesitate to let us know that Marin County is "second only to Los Angeles when it comes to arts organizations." The Marin County Fair, from June 30 to July 4, 2016, held at the Civic Center Fairgrounds since 1971, "is the most visible thing we do," says Gabriella, "but we do much more." the Marin County Fair, will celebrate its 75th anniversary. She stresses its importance as a "celebration of the accomplishments of ordinary people." For twenty-seven years, "Marin Center Presents" has been offering "celebrated entertainment from around the world from music, dance, theater and more." The Redwood Foyer features "rotating exhibitions of visual artworks by Marin artists and beyond." The new Exhibit Hall Gallery features work by local artists, "showcasing the diversity and creativity of talent in Marin County." (There's a photo show going on right now that you might want to see.) Reaching out to young people is important to Gabriella, and that accounts for the recent Soul Street Dance program which offered master classes on stage and sold out quickly. Those with a literary turn of mind enjoyed Armistead Maupin's recent reading and book signing. Theater buffs were treated to Brian Copeland's performances, and the musically inclined will thrill to the sounds of the Ten Tenors on Nov. 27. Gabriella explains that the programming attempts to engage both children and adults, and "our goal is to create opportunities to transform our patrons from observers to active engaged participants." Community partners help to sponsor and fund the Fair, but, as you might guess, more money is needed to support everything the county would like to do. We've got the facilities, Gabriella emphasizes: the Veterans' Memorial Auditorium, the Exhibit Hall, the Showcase Theater, the Fairgrounds, a Community Rental Program, the Civic Center. The Marin Cultural Association was recently established to "increase participation, advance collaboration and optimize resources for culture in Marin County. Funds raised will help upgrade the facilities, increase community outreach, establish Marin Center as a center for arts and culture in Marin County." There's a lot to coordinate, a lot to do, and Gabriella realizes that it's a "broad mission." Trying to figure out how to serve the community summarizes her take on her job, and partnering with diverse agencies and organizations is one important solution. Serving Marin's senior population is one of her priorities; another is focusing on "developing imaginative capacities in young learners." My take on Gabriella's take is that we are lucky to have such a dynamic and perceptive person at the helm. Thanks, Gabriella, for your insightful presentation.
