6 6RE The Pine Cone January 25, 2019 Random thoughts as we confront the unfathomable mysteries of 2019 mate toxic sport. Yes, it is wrong to bully. Yes, women should be treated with respect. I don t need my (former) shaving gel to tell me that. Vendor carts: Elections have consequences. In 2014 Jerry Brown won Monterey County 69.4 percent to 30.6 percent. I m sure the vendor cart measure was aimed at California s larger cities, but the quality of progressivism is not strained. It falleth like the gentle rain from heaven on the quaint and the Scenic Views By JERRY GERVASE un-quaint. The law was intended to help low-income residents to climb the ladder of success. None of the original 13 licenses in went to immigrants. I don t get it. And something else I don t understand how will cart service work? Will you order at the cart s counter, pay, and then find a place to eat your food? You know, the way you do at McDonald s? Pine Cone letter writers decried the fact that vendor carts would be detrimental to s uniqueness. Newsflash that uniqueness silently slipped away years ago. Just ask the bohemian artisans who were displaced by the new building on Dolores and Fifth. Theybe, it s Cold Outside: California State Senator and Judiciary Committee chair Hannah-Beth Jackson, a Democrat from Santa Barbara, announced this week that gender neutral pronouns will be used during committee hearings. Jackson said that as the chair, she will now be known as they, to TOXIC MASCULINITY: This concept is completely lost on me, and Gillette lost me as a customer with their television commercial condemning males as bullies. The commercial is not offensive so much as it is stupid. Everywhere I turn I see nerds glued to the screens of some kind of electronic device. This may be the least masculine generation of males I have ever seen. If our country faced a national emergency and government asked them to enlist in the armed services, they d have ask Alexa or Siri what to do. Also, the commercial doesn t mention toxic femininity. Cyber and verbal bulling is common among females. The Egard Watch Company has released a commercial countering the Gillette Ad. A Video features footage of men in various situations from fighting fires to hugging their children while the company s founder, Ilan Srulovicz, narrates. The footage and narration are accompanied by sobering statistics relating to men. Men account for 93 percent of workplace fatalities. (Bureau of Labor Statistics) Men comprise over 97 percent of war fatalities. (U.S. Department of Defense) 79 percent of all homicide victims are male. (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) Nearly half of fathers without any visitation rights still financially support their children. (U.S. Census Bureau) Men account for 80 percent of all suicide victims. (World Health Organization) 75 percent of single homeless people are men. (National Coalition for the Homeless) Perhaps the execs at Gillette should look in the mirror to remind themselves of their sponsorship of boxing the ultikeep in line with the spirit of gender neutrality for the rules of this committee. In 2017 California became the first state in the union to officially recognize a third gender option, paving the way for non-gender binary to be included on most official state documents. The act allows California residents to select an option x or non-binary option on drivers licenses, birth certificates, marriage licenses, and other-state issued documents. State senator Scott Wiener, who introduced the bill, thanked Governor Brown for signing it into law, claiming the legislation now allows California residents to be who they are. Sorry Senator, it s not who they are, it s who they want us to think they are. In other state news, Governor Gavin Newsom s wife, Jennifer, announced she chooses to be known as First Partner, rather than First Lady of California. Mrs. Newsom and Senators Jackson and Wiener are engaging in Newspeak from Orwell s Imagine this: After services at Our Partner Queen of Heaven church we went to see that great musical My Fair Partner, while listening to Frank Sinatra s swinging version of The Partner is a Tramp on the car radio. Please make room in the hand basket because the state is definitely going to hell in one. When the wind blows, the power goes off: Many of us lost power during the recent heavy rains. Why is our power grid so fragile? I once lived in Tornado Alley in Western Michigan. We would ride our the twisters in our basement watching weather news on television, while keeping our kids distracted by making popcorn in our electric popcorn maker.
