3 Medical News This is a reprint due to an oversight Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) DVT is the thrombus (clot) development, usually in the lower deep veins of the body - & usually the legs - which can have serious medical implications when the clot breaks free and migrates to the heart and thence to the lungs. Most cases occur post operatively due partly to the recumbent position and lack of muscle action to squeeze the blood flow on its return journey. DVT's can also occur on prolonged aeroplane or road travel without fairly simple precautions.. Make sure you are well hydrated before, during & after travel & be sensible with alcohol consumption.. The wearing of compression stockings on the legs - anti embolis stockings may assist.. Regular exercising of the legs during travel, doing simple exercises accessible on the Internet are important.. Some travel doctors recommend low dose aspirin before, during & after travel as a blood thinner; however this preventative measure has become controversial in recent times. For urgent unplanned travel heparin can be easily self administered by the traveler. The bottom line is always consult your General Medical Practitioner well before travel, as they are your best guide. 4 The Snabels Experience Part 1 What a great time we have had over the last six weeks. Abe and I arrived in Ireland, hired a car and drove almost all around the country. We met some really funny Irish people, but they were so nice and helpful, giving us tips where to go and to go to the hotels and cafes of their friends. Some were bad choices but most fantastic. It was suggested we go to the Cliffs of Mohan and take a ferry ride, it was quite a windy day, but so worth the drenching we got. The sights were way above what we expected. After every place we visited being our favourite we caught up with the rest of our group in Dublin and then flew to Spain. The airports are are our most dreaded time. In Perth we go to gate 1 or 2, here we go to, J 308 on the 2nd floor. Spain was not what I expected, on an hour s drive from the dreaded airport there were kilometres after kilometres of high rise dilapidated units. No matter how humble our homes, be very thankful for what we have. Madrid was so hot and humid we stayed in the hotel until our flight the next day taking us to Seville where we joined both Margaret and Lil for our cruise. 142 passengers were on our boat, most of them French who were not impressed having 24 Australians on board. We sailed at night and spent some really fun times on day trips, flamenco dancers failed to impress. Horse and flamenco dancers fared little better, but apparently the wine handed out after the show almost made it worthwhile. A little town with about 3 million people was shoppers' heaven. In the city of Cadiz, both Lil and I have lifted the profit for the shoe salesmen. The sights along the river were beautiful, tiny little houses spotted around the country side, and many old ruins, and the big country estates, and the millions of olive tree growing were more like I expected. From there we were back at the airport to Barcelona, we did enjoy it here, went on the cable car across the harbour into a mountain fort, hundreds of years old, and so well maintained. The beaches had nice brown sand and large rocks on the shore. The whole beach was covered in sun bathers lying on every inch of beach the eye could see. We are now in one of the nicest places I have ever seen. Croatia, is so green and clean, the air is so fresh and pure all those with sniffles have been cured. So far we have had a coach driver get lost in Zagreb. He drove around to every hotel until he found ours then parked on a tram line on the wrong side of a one way street and started unloading our bags. Yesterday we went for a one and a half hour hike in the lakes area. After 4 hours, and one of our group being stretched out with 2 sprained ankles, the guide figured out we were lost. We had walked up and down about one million stone steps, loads of uneven wooden planks, through water, and finally up a goat track to a little tram that took us to our coach. In all five people were taken out in the bus, that was sent for the lady with sprained ankles. She now has both feet wrapped in elastic bandages and is using a walking stick to walk about 10 meters before needing to rest. It was dark when we arrived back at the nights accommodation. We are laughing now but not so much at the time. Next update will be from MAKARSKA. This place must surely be just one step from heaven.

5 Part 2 Makaska is a truly lovely friendly place. The beaches are a clear blue and very inviting, to get into the ocean, you need reef shoes, the rocks are all along the beach but in the water some are as sharp as needles. Walking to the clothing markets were our main source of exercise, followed by a nice cold beer. We all did our own sightseeing. So much coming and going took place, but we usually met up about 6.00 p.m. for drinks. As you can imagine cold drinks featured in daily must have. A taxi was hired by some to go into Bosnia, and others went up mountains, while some just enjoyed watching the world go by. Next stop was Split. This is a huge town with the town centre closed to all traffic. Our coach deposited us at the no go sign, it was fun to watch the hotel people come to collect all our luggage. Bags and people were everywhere. And we still had our dumb guide with us. I think she wanted another tip, but by now we had all had enough of her. Next morning the porters had to take all the luggage down to our boat. I think they were pleased to see the back of us. We are now on our boat, the Fantazija. It has only 20 cabins and we are the only group on her. We leave port each morning and sail until about eleven o clock when we throw out the anchor and wait for permission to land. Yesterday we were not allowed in until 8.30 at night. Some passengers were taken in on a rubber ducky but could not get back on board until we had landed; others swam in the beautiful cool ocean. When we do land up to 6 other boats tie up to each other, and passengers from these boats walk through all the others to get onto the shore. Today we are boat number one. Our damaged fellow passengers are healing, and Lil can finally walk, though still with a walking stick. Abe had to attend the Doc s this morning, and is now confined to bed for 2 days. So guess who has the credit card. Part three probably after we get home, Fran Final episode next month ************** How does a man plan for the future? He buys two cartons of beer instead of one

6 Morning Coffee at the Redcliff on the Murray A very pleasant morning was had by all. It was a little wet under foot but the heaters were on and the coffee and scones hot THE GOOD OLD DAYS ********* How often do we recount to our youth about "the good old days" when there were decent sensible programs on the radio, and remind them what radio was TV without pictures". 7 ****** This happened to an Englishman in France who was totally drunk. The French policeman stops his car and asks the gentleman if he has been drinking. With great difficulty, the Englishman admits that he has been drinking all day, that his daughter got married in the morning to a Frenchman, and that he drank champagne and a few bottles of wine at the reception and quite a few glasses of single malt thereafter. Quite upset, the policeman proceeds to alco-test (breath test) him and asks the Englishman if he knows, that under French Law, why he is going to be arrested. The Englishman answers with humour: No sir, I do not! But while we're asking questions, do you know that this is a British car and my wife is driving... on the other side???
