Top one is at Santa Barbara and the lower one was on the sometimes annual Wildflower Tour. Always great to see the almost 70 year old TCs still active and roadworthy to wear out the roads. il First Class Ma David Edgar, Editor 1454 Chase Terrace El Cajon, CA The Midget Chassis June 2014 What s Inside President s Message May TCMG Meeting Welcome to new TCMG members June 14 Cherry Picking Tour Wildflower Tour Report WOW - What a Weekend April TCMG Meeting Report

What a weekend we just had in Santa Barbara with our TCMG friends! It was a great turnout with 35 people and 12 TCs taking part in the event. Those who didn t have their TCs must have been envious of those who did, given the amazing weather and great driving roads. A big thanks to everyone who helped make this event happen. The Joe Douglass Wildflower Tour was also a hit, although fewer people were willing to brave the weather on that event. The cold and brief rain didn t stop us however, and a fun time was had by all who were there. Let s hope for plenty of rain next winter so we can do it again! While we re on the subject of events, don t miss the upcoming Cherry Picking event. It s always a hit and fun for kids, too. There is something for everyone scenic country roads, picking cherries right from the trees, eating more than you pick, and finding all sorts of ways to enjoy cherries once you get them home. It has been great to see so many people and TCs coming out to meetings and events this year. Let s keep it up! See photos on the Santa Barbara tour report starting on page 10. And please correct the information on Ed & Barb Fuller in your new TCMG Directories. Gee, another inch and Gene can reach the cherries in the photo above. Plan on attending this. Fairly close by and should be an exciting event with lots of MGs to view and great driving too. For more info Also, consider while in San Diego, to attend a simple car display for a nursing home about 15 miles east of the GoF on Monday the 25th. The facility is excited to have an activity for those not able to get out much. After the display, enjoy a hosted lunch and relax at the Edgar s daughter s home nearby before returning to the GoF venue. Cars not limited to just TCs.

May 24 Wildflower Tour We had three TCs on the Wildflower Run belonging to Richard & Sandra Loe, Steve & Linda Simmons and Joe Douglass with friend Eleanor. Those in modern machines were Ron & Bobbie Simon with grandkids Leah & Danielle in tow, Larry & Kay Einhorn, and Curt & Jan Sorensen. Ron Wong & friend, Susanna, were at the start to see everyone off and followed a few miles but did not make the rest of the tour. The three TCs guided the caravan north, led by our tour leader Joe Douglass. Just after we departed, Joe had a minor breakdown near the start - a fuel line was leaking. He quickly installed a couple of hose clamps and once again we were on our way. The weather started out cold, and then it got much colder. A sudden rain hit us near Gorman as we crested the mountains, and strong icy winds blasted us the whole time we were on the north side of the hill. There was plenty of snow in the mountains in most directions. The Loes were concerned about the weather since they don t have a top for their car, but they toughed it out and didn t get too wet, nor did the Simmons who were also sans top. The only person not affected by the cold was Joe Douglass, although to be fair he did have his hood raised. With age comes wisdom, or so they say. But even out of the car he seemed completely unphased while the rest of us bundled up. We toured past some impressive groves of poppies on our way to our lunch stop. At the picnic grounds we took refuge in a small shelter, but it was still breezy and cold. Eleanor discovered that the table out in the sun, protected only by a yucca tree, was completely windless and warm. It was like some kind of oasis of warmth. Walk ten feet away and it was freezing, but warm at that table. So we all rushed to that spot and had a nice lunch, once the Loes carried a second table over to make room for everyone to sit. After lunch Joe led many of us on a nature walk to learn about different kinds of desert flowers. Afterward we toured to the California Poppy Reserves to check out the poppies there, which were impressive despite the blooms refusing to open all the way in the cold wind. I think they were smarter than us. Returning to the south side of the hill it was much warmer. All in all a nice day and good memories of a TC adventure in the desert. Steve Simmons Joe, the youngster at heart, leads the group on a hike Was on the cold side so bundling up was much in order as evidenced by Steve & Linda Simmons above and Richard & Sandra Loe below. Two shots with TC bonnets up, Steve & Joe, a rare site for both of them Ron & Bobbie Simon brought their granddaughters, Leah & Danielle for the day Enjoying a repast, one of the more popular staples of a TC event. 6 WOW - What a Weekend TCs taking the curves WOW WHAT A WEEKEND put on by Steve and Linda Simmons. Simmons Garage The Si Th It started with brunch at their beautiful home in Thousand Oaks that was superior to any brunch put on by the finest 5 star restaurant. The tables were set in their garden-like back yard. Our hotel was the Franciscan Inn and it was perfect for our little group. Linda prepared blueberry french toast, a special cinnamon coffee cake, eggs, bacon, orange juice, pineapple juice, and some other goodies I forgot along with steaming hot regular and decaf coffee. Everyone went their own way on Friday night for dinner and after a continental breakfast on Saturday we set off for John and Linda Wrights home in Solvang to see his collection of cars. John and Linda were great hosts and after enjoying their hospitality we set off to their son s winery where we had lunch and wine tasting. We had 11 TCs, and 35 members there. After brunch we set off for Santa Barbara on roads which were set up by Steve and did not involve freeways. It was a spectacular drive and of course Toni and I got lost around Santa Paula. Fortunately there was a freeway close by, and we hopped on and joined everyone in Santa Barbara. Photos by Steve & Linda Simmons & David Edgar Great parking area and the rooms were great, and they served warm chocolate and oatmeal cookies by the time we got there. A field of TCs on the Wright s front lawn. Saturday night s dinner was at a spectacular restaurant where Steve and Linda had arranged for the 30 of us to have our own room. After dinner a number of us sat around and enjoyed more cookies which the staff at our hotel were nice enough to prepare for us. Sunday after breakfast, we had the traditional car display and photo op and then it was on the way home. We can t say enough about how much we enjoyed our weekend. Many thanks to Steve and Linda for their hard work and dedication to our club. Mel & Toni Appell (More photos on following pages plus back cover) Two off th T the ffactory t S Sebring b i MGA Twin-cams at the Wright s garage.

The MG NA was a popular item to look over. Eleven TCs outside the winery, where their drivers and passengers are enjoying lunch and wine tasting. Racing the Train Lunch and wine tasting at the Standing Sun Winery Many thanks to Standing Sun Winery, owned and operated by John & Linda Wright s son, John, for a wonderful lunch venue and wine tasting. Be sure to stop by when in the Buellton area. It is just a couple blocks off the 101 Highway. While driving back to the hotel along route 101, we decided to take a detour along a small road that follows the coastline. Railroad tracks run along this road and had us wondering if a train would come by. A moment later we heard a roaring noise behind us, and low and behold there is a train coming by. We drove on, merging back onto Pacific Coast Highway, and a couple miles later passed the train while it was held up at a red stop signal. Suddenly, the race was on! Could we stay ahead of it all the way to Santa Barbara? We held our best speed down the highway, watching our six for the speeding behemoth. Suddenly there it was, gaining ground and bound to pass us at any second. As we watched it pull alongside, the conductor blew the horn and waved. That brought a smile to our faces, and just when we thought we were done waving we looked over again and there were 30 people in the top of a dome car also waving as they passed us. Still waving, Linda said we should honk our horn also, at which point I reminded her that a TC horn isn t loud enough for its own passengers to hear at this speed! We didn t think there would be a chance of catching the train again before Santa Barbara so continued onward in defeat. But wait, as we approach town 20 minutes later there is a train stopped at a station changing passengers. Could it be yes, It s the same train! With renewed determination we push forward at lightning speed (for a TC) and beat the train into town. At least we think so, since the tracks are hidden from where we pull into the hotel. But then we receive a form of confirmation. As we pull into our parking spot and shut down the engine, we hear a train horn blowing as it travels through the station a block or two away. Victory confirmed, and a badge for the side of the cockpit. Steve Simmons

Greystone Mansion Concours d Elegance Not a TCMG event but Mel & Toni Appell entered the Greystone Concours d Elegance on May 4th. There were 145 cars there and they had loads of fun. Mel & Toni Appell s MGTC Tiffany & Co. crystal awards were given in thirty categories at the event where entries are assessed per the French method of judging which emphasizes the overall impression of the given vehicle, taking into account such factors as originality, authenticity, design, styling, and elegance. More detailed descriptions are found on our website so please check there. The Saturday drive winds towards the gold rush town of Colombia and then on to Murphys only 15 miles away. The more adventurous can continue from Murphys up the gorgeous Highway 4 towards Calavaras Big Trees State Park, and Ebbetts Pass (55 miles from Murphys) but you can drive as far as you want and turn around. The scenery is California Alpine at it s very best, literally breathtaking. The quaint town of Sonora is filled with little shops, restaurants, and sights for walking about. We will be staying in the Gunn House Hotel located in the center of town. The Gunn House has a rich history and has been a landmark since antique-filled rooms have been reserved for the weekend. Each room is unique and some are even said to house some spirits of long gone Sonora natives!! The rates vary from $84 dollars for a small Queen (literally not much bigger than the bed) to $125 for the good Doctor Gunn s own master bedroom per night. Please make your reservations through the Hotel. The Gunn House Hotel 286 S. Washington St. Sonora, CA (209) Saturday night, the banquet will be catered by Christopher s Restaurant in the Sonora Inn, 5 minute walk from the Gunn House. Sunday morning, we will depart back to reality. When you make reservations, please send an to Howard Shempp at hshempp@gmail.com and let him know. Additional details will be provided as we get closer to the event. The 22 rooms will fill up, and the Sonora Inn will be used for any overflow we may experience. 9 April 22 nd Meeting Minutes As members walked into the Montrose meeting room, they passed by four MGTCs parked at the front. They were driven by the Loe s, Simmons, Edgar s and McLish. The TC Only parking signs by Don McLish were worthy and effective. The meeting started about 8pm. President Steve Simmons presided and welcomed everyone in attendance. Malcolm Kirby was the only guest of the evening. Joyce Edgar posted the Treasury Report and the club welcomed new members Hema and Janakie Ratnayake in abstencia. Our Post Office Box is now located closer to the Montrose meeting location. Four Safety Fast magazines were shared with the members. Everyone looked forward to Linda Simmons freshly baked cookies, cakes, and exceptional mild chunky salsa and corn/bean dip and other goodies. In addition was Ron Simon s good coffee. Some members helped themselves to a snack before the meeting started, others waited until the meeting adjourned. No matter the refreshments were enjoyed and appreciated by all. Steve Simmons reminded those who plan to attend the West GOF event in San Diego in August that they can register and make reservations on line. Joyce Edgar suggested a mini car show for a nursing home and maybe a drive-by her daughter s house for a snack maybe a fun thing to do. It could happen on Monday for early arrivals to the GOF. Old Business: Steve Simmons reviewed program events with program chair, Curt Sorensen. May 27 is the 60th TC MG club history anniversary. Don McLish will bring history items to the meeting. June 24 - Picnic and Meeting at the Henkels July 22 - Bill Ippolito will speak on flying and auto racing. Aug. 25 August 29th GOF West, San Diego Sept. 23 Simon Auto Museum movie night Oct Halloween Potluck Dinner Nov. 25 David Reid & Terry Schuller on under water photography and their African safari Dec.? Holiday Party at Sportsmen s Lodge, date to be determined For those attending the Wild Flower Tour, please refer to newsletter for meeting time and directions to Castaic/MacDonald s. The group will stop by Rigley Park for lunch. Bring your lunch and drinks. According to Steve Simmons the May 9th to May 11th Wine Country Weekend at Santa Barbara has 33 members signed up and 37 attending brunch. About 11 TCs plan to be driven. New Business: David Edgar contacted someone on ebay for old TC badges. There are 4 badges from the 60 s wrapped and cost about $40.00 that maybe the club can buy and use for regalia. David brought it up to the group for a vote. The members voted and approved to buy all badges. Larry Einhorn commended David Edgar on the hybrid TC caption in the newsletter. David Edgar shared modified TC steering arms parts that Richard Loe can try when rebuilding his steering and report back on how effective they were. According to Fran Thelander, George Kershaw is doing a bit better. Weekends are best times to call George due to his therapy schedule. Joe Douglass suggested that maybe a call inviting Clarence Weiss to attend a meeting celebrating TC History month will be a good idea. Don McLish suggested getting in touch with Gene and Karen Olson, as Gene is off from school during the summer. In George s absence, Gorden & June brought in raffle items. A pot of flowers, screwdriver, recipe cards from TCMG members work diligently fitting the puzzles together. Gamble house, TC mug, MG garment bag, foldable tool box, a book on cars, were prizes enjoyed by raffle winners. The meeting adjourned and everyone headed towards the refreshment table. Program: Steve and Linda Simmons presented a Jigsaw Puzzle. There were six teams in competition to solve the puzzles. The puzzle 57th Annual TCMG/ARR Conclave, San Luis Obispo, California 2013 was a lovely picture divided into 250 puzzling parts. It was a challenging puzzle enjoyed by everyone. Congratulations to the Simon/Edgar team for completing their puzzle first. They were each awarded a Starbucks gift card. It was suggested that the puzzles can be a good item to be auctioned during the December Holiday Party since we are done with them. Respectfully yours, Lucy A table full of freshly prepared snacks for us to enjoy by Linda s loving hands. More photos on page 18 Photos by Steve Simmons & David Edgar
