Coordinator Earl Hobbs earlrh58@yahoo.com Volume 21 Issue 5 News from the CD May 2017 Hard to believe that May is here. As I write this it is pouring rain, mid-40s and more like a late fall day, 20 degrees below normal. But we all know better things are coming and that Spring will be here, if only for a day, and we are back on our wheels. Chapter IL-Z2 News Jim and Barb Kopchok Chapter Directors We actually have a couple possible events for this month, starting with our meeting on May 7 th. Remember, we meet one week EARLIER due to Mothers Day. After this meeting, with weather permitting, we will have a ride. One option is the Motorcycle Sunday event in Aurora. Some vendors and food at Phillips Park followed by a 60 mile organized ride. However, based on the day this could be changed by our esteemed Ride Coordinator, Don Shore. A couple events which are not formal Chapter events are also on the calendar. May is Niehaus Customer Appreciation Days. Many riders enjoy a day or overnight ride and the festivities that surround this event. At the end of May Chapter G2 has their Memorial Day weekend ride. For more information on the details surrounding this ride (heading to Pontiac, IL), contact Ed Daujotis (goldwingusa@gmail.com), Chapter Director. Anyone also interested, G2 has a ride to Niagara Falls coming up at the beginning of June. Anyone looking for a mid-week event, on June 14 th, riders from all over will depart from Holiday Inn, Willowbrook to head out on the Mother Road Ride and Rally. Might be fun to see them on their way. Looking a little further ahead, June 17 th is the Freedom Run, commemorating Mid-East Conflict veterans. Typically the ride would end in Marseilles, IL, but I understand some changes may be in store this year. Thousands of bikes participate and it is an exciting time. On June the Illinois District is hosting their Summer Rally in Pontiac, Il. See our web site for more information and registration. 5 Volume 21 Issue 5 Page 5 Chapter Educator LABELS Do you know that everything that we own has a warning label attached to it. And even if you do, it is nearly impossible to determine if a product represents a true hazard or are they a bunch of words just there to prevent a lawsuit. A paper published in the Harvard Business Review concluded that the U.S. warning label system Fails at distinguishing between large and small risks. Clearly the idea behind warning labels is an important one. Consumers need to be informed of possible risk before buying or using a product. First, I would tell you, Warning: Do not read this article if you are sleeping. I found some very interesting labels while looking around. Not intended for highway use found on a wheel barrel. Remove child before folding found on a baby stroller. Do not put hands under deck or try to pick up while running found on a lawn mower. Keep securely fastened on your head when your ride. Otherwise, if you are involved in a crash, it is likely to fly off your head found on a helmet. What we need is a system that allows people to distinguish between a modest risk or an explicit warning. Clearly the idea behind warning labels is an important one. Consumers need to be informed of possible risks before buying or using a product. We as customers just glaze over when we look at all these warnings. The reason that I brought this subject to your attention is that we come across a lot of dumb warnings. But there are many good reasons to read these labels before you proceed with using the product. Even if you think you can handle any mishaps that can occur. Who knows, you can either have a good laugh or learn something new. But there is a reason that those stickers are there. Someone thinks there is a hazard. Do not be a victim of your own, for not paying attention to the labels. Enjoy the weather and safe riding!!! Dennis Murphy Chapter Educator

6 Page 6 May 2017 Chapter IL-Z2 News Ride Coordinator Well our first official ride of the year is in the books. We had a good turnout and ended up with 8 people at the Broken Oar for lunch after a nice ride. After our May meeting, weather permitting of course, we re going to head out towards Aurora with a destination of Philips Park where we ll find Auroras 17th annual Motorcycle Sunday event. At the rally they have live music, food, vendors, bike contest, and a bike blessing. At 1pm they have a 60 mile ride for anyone that wants to participate. Don't forget - make sure you mark your calendars and book your rooms, June is our weekend trip to the Nauvoo area of Illinois, and in July is our week long adventure trip which is leaving on Saturday July 29th and returning on Sunday August 6th. More details in the coming months. Make your hotel reservations early to get our special pricing on the rooms. Hotels for both of these rides have been setup, so give them a call to ensure your spot. 8 Page 8 May 2017 Chapter IL-Z2 News 2017 Annual Fun Run April 1 st - October 31 st It s time once again for the MAP Annual Fun Run. Our theme for this year will be State Parks or Historic Sites and Monuments. I have compiled a list from all the submissions that have been received. While we won t have as many this year as last year, I did try to accommodate everyone who participates. I have also added several bonus sites as not many chapters submitted entries for a bonus site. As in the past, you will need to visit the individual sites and have a picture of you visiting the site. You can also do this as a chapter and include the chapter picture. Your Chapter Director will then need to verify everyone from their respective chapter who did participate. For every five sites that you visit, along with your pictures. You will be able to draw a hand of five cards. If you visit a BONUS site, and send a picture with you in it, you will be allowed to draw an additional bonus card. All hands will be $5 a hand, plus an additional $1 for the bonus draw. Unlike last year, there will be NO restrictions when visiting a bonus site. Payment needs to be from your chapters checking account and made payable to: ILLINOIS DISTRICT MAP. NO CASH or personal checks will be accepted. Multiple pictures can be printed on one sheet. If you want to send in pictures during the contest early, we will be posting pictures on the website. You will need to have all of your pictures, a copy of your checked list, and paperwork for drawn cards sent to us by December 15, Note: The list for the sites and paperwork for drawn cards are located on the website. After all of the information is received by the cutoff date, each card in the deck will be randomly drawn and assigned a point value. Also, a separate drawing will be done for the bonus sites and those will be assigned a bonus value. The total of these points will be given to the hand and the three highest totals will be the winners. If none of your six cards are a bonus number, you will receive a minimum value for the bonus draw. There will also be an award for the chapter that has the most participants in the contest. Pictures are required to be eligible for the awards. The winners will be announced at Winter Warm Up in (Bikes do not have to be in the picture) So, let s get riding and have some fun! 11 Volume 21 Issue 5 Page 11 Communications Options for our Chapter We now have several different ways to communicate within our Chapter. It s always a challenge to keep everyone informed and up-to-date as we all have busy schedules, travel, can t always make the meetings, and so on. The Chapter Newsletter remains a staple for our monthly written document. It is typically mailed out several days before our scheduled meeting, and almost immediately is also available for download via our website. Unfortunately, the newsletter needs to be written a week or more before the meeting in order to allow time for production and printing, and so things may change or need to be updated. Hard copy versions of the newsletter are available to anyone who needs one, just let us know. The meeting itself is important way for us to share information not to mention a lot more fun, but again, not everyone can always make the meeting and may still want to engage with us in our rides and other activities. Our website ( is probably the central means for everyone to stay abreast of the latest information. Articles from our newsletter are published in the Chapter IL-Z2 News & Articles section. You can search/view these without the need to open the entire newsletter. Further, you can subscribe to these articles by following three easy steps, shown below. Whenever an article is added or modified you will be sent an notification. You can always unsubscribe. Newsletters are available for download, links to helpful sites, our updated Ride/Event Calendar and more. STEP! Click on menu for Chapter IL-Z2 News and Articles STEP 2 Enter your address (e.g. myname@gmail.com) Continued on next page

12 Page 12 STEP 3 Confirm your May 2017 Chapter ILZ2 News (Continued from previous page) STEP 4 Receive Confirmation in your Another method is to use Facebook. Many people do not use or like Facebook but we have almost 35 members of the GWRRA IL-Z2 Facebook group. This group is private and if you choose to join, Tony will approve your full participation. You can then see posts and some active communication chats between members, questions being answered and some impromptu rides or other being established. I personally wasn t a big Facebook fan until I saw how valuable this is. For example, at our recent dinner, due to some cancellations, Doug found we had some extra room. He put this on Facebook so any last minute dinner goers or their guests would feel welcome and it worked! Another Facebook option is the new Facebook page (not the same as the group) that was recently created. This is more for publishing information about our Chapter and what is going on so that we might be able to connect with non-members and encourage new participation. This Facebook page is at We have posting on different topics and even will post events as reminders for currently scheduled activity. If you should have any questions on how to sign up or use Facebook please just ask, as we have several members who are very good using this application. In all cases, we are trying our best to keep you informed about what is going on in your Chapter. If you should have any questions or concerns, please let us know. Jim Kopchok Chapter Director
