1 SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES (222) January/February/March 2012 I understand that I participate in today s outing entirely at my own risk. The volunteer leader will try to make the event enjoyable, informative and safe, but neither The Urban Trail Conference Inc. nor its officers and leaders can be held responsible for accident or injury. The leader may reject from the outing anyone whose preparation or conduct is inappropriate. I will comply with all applicable laws. Announcements Membership: First Year Membership only $7. A great gift idea. Thereafter, membership dues are $10 for 1 year, or $18 for 2 years. See contact information at the end of this schedule. Contact us before the last month of this schedule to be listed in the next schedule. Short walks and longer hikes are all welcome, and leaders get free membership plus an invitation to our annual dinner. Call the leader to confirm hike status, even when not indicated. Also, re-check train/bus fares and schedules, etc. for changes. Look on back of the MTA s The Map available free at NYC subway fare booths. Older copies have non- MTA travel contacts also. Volunteer group and individual opportunities for trail maintenance are available through the New York/New Jersey Trail Conference. Training and equipment are provided to care for trails on which we depend for our hiking enjoyment. Try it! Easy access to trails throughout the Metropolitan area. Sat., Jan. 7 - D&R CANAL TOWPATH. 8 to 9 miles mostly flat, at a steady pace. No slow hikers please. Hike the Delaware & Raritan Canal Towpath from Bound Brook to New Brunswick along the Raritan River. Bring lunch and beverage. Meet 9 am at NY Penn Station, New Jersey Transit ticket area. Leader: Ludwig Hendel, Call only on Friday evening Jan. 6. Joint hike. Members only. Sun., Jan. 8 - JONES BEACH AND BOARDWALK. 4 miles, leisurely walk on boardwalk and beach, looking for birds. Rain cancels. Take the LIRR from Penn Station at 9:09 am to Wantaugh (arriving 10:04 am). Please, check LIRR schedule Drivers meet at eastbound platform. Leader: Frank Bamberger, or me at fbamberger@nyc.rr.com. Joint hike. Non-members $3. Sun., Jan. 8 STATEN ISLAND WINTER HIKE / CROSS COUNTRY TOUR. 4 to 6 miles. Depending on the weather we will hike on Greenbelt trails or Staten Island streets in area to be decided. If you have cross country skis or snowshoes, call to register for a cross-country tour in a local park or golf course when there is sufficient snow cover. For the winter hike bring lunch and beverage and allow sufficient time to take 10:30 am ferry from Manhattan to Staten Island. Please use rest rooms before you get to Staten Island so we can leave promptly. Meet the leader at the train station steps in the rear of the terminal (Staten Island side). Drivers or those not coming from Manhattan may call leader for instructions. Cost: Metro Card- 2 fares. Leader: Bettye Soffer. You must call to register, between 7-9 pm. Cell phone on day of hike; Heavy rain or snow cancels. Non-members $3. Thurs., Jan FORT TRYON TO WAVE HILL. 5 miles at a moderate pace. Meet 10 am at the entrance to Ft. Tryon Park, at the end of Fort Washington Ave. Take the M4 bus to the entrance to Ft. Tryon Park or the A - train to 190 th street and the elevator up. Return via bus to the #1 train. We ll walk through Ft. Tryon and Inwood Hill Parks, and on to Wave Hill. We ll be on paved walks much of the time except for well-maintained woodland trails in Inwood Hill and later in the Bronx in Riverdale Park. Be prepared for snow or ice! Hiking boots are recommended as the trail can be muddy. A few gradual ups and downs. Bring water and lunch or buy lunch at Wave Hill. Leader: Pat Belanoff, Rain cancels. 2 Schedule of Activities (222) January/February/March 2012 Page 2 Sat., Jan LIBERTY PARK: JERSEY CITY, N.J. 9 miles. Enjoy a day at Liberty Park with its breathtaking views of NYC. A real treat. Dinner at a diner either inside or outside the park afterwards. Dress for strong sun!! Late return. Meet at turnstiles at 32 nd St. & 6 th Ave. Path Station for train to Grove Street. Fare $1.50 each way. Non-members $3. Sat., Jan CLOVE LAKE PARK- STATEN ISLAND. Approx. 2 miles mostly flat, at a slow pace. Take the 10:30 am Staten Island Ferry from Manhattan. Then take the S61 or S62 bus at the S.I. terminal, to Clove Road (& Victory Blvd). About ½ hour ride. Meet the leader 11:30 am at the bus stop. Bring lunch and beverage. Cost: MetroCard. Leader: Sal Varbero, Call to confirm between 8 &10 pm the week of the hike. Non-members $3. Wed., Jan LINCOLN CENTER CONCERT WALK. 3 to 5 miles. Easy pace walk, some ups and downs. See Upper East Side sights, Riverside Park, and chamber music concert at Juilliard. Meet the leader 10 am at 72 nd Street park just north of the subway station between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue. Join us for lunch at a local Chinese restaurant or bring own and eat nearby. Free concert will be at 1 pm. We will check out the Performing Arts Library, see a garden, a church and wind up at Columbus Circle. Drop out whenever you are tired. Approx. 4 to 6 miles, moderate pace with some ups and downs, mostly on paved streets. Walk to Wave Hill through Riverdale s Fieldston District. Free admission to Wave Hill until noon. Lunch at Wave Hill. Bring lunch and beverage or buy at snack bar (a little pricey). After exploring the garden, we will continue our visit to Fieldston, finishing at #1 stop at 242nd St. B way. Drop out points available. Take the #1 B way local to 238 th St. and meet 10:30 am in front of the Riverdale Diner across from train stop. Metrocard fares. Sun., Jan GREYSTONE TO ARDSLEY via OLD CROTON AQUEDUCT. 7 miles, steady moderately paced hike mostly on the Old Croton Aqueduct but also on several side trails in local parks that include climbs. First Untermeyer Park then to Lenoir, both are 150 ft. climbs with great view points. Afterward we go north via a series of inter-connected parks & return to the OCA, finishing in Ardsley. Snow, ice may limit route or cancel. Take the 11:20 am Hudson Line from Grand Central Terminal to Greystone (arrives 11:57 am). Drivers park near the Greystone Station. Sun., Jan RIVERSIDE PARK. A moderate, level walk from 116th St. to 66th St. followed by a nice bowl of hot soup (or whatever) at Ollie's. Meet 10:30 am inside the Broadway & 116th St. subway station, but outside of the turnstiles. Optional small contribution for Riverside Park Fund. Non-members $3. Sat., Jan NASSAU SUFFOLK TRAIL, SMITHTOWN TO SUNKEN MEADOW. 12 miles on flat terrain. Moderate pace. Bring lunch/drink. Meet in Penn Station at the LIRR waiting room on the lower level. See the mighty Nissaquoge River and pass by the Smith House which is over 300 years old. Dinner at a diner in Kings Park. Fare: $23.50 RT. LATE RETURN. Non-members $3. Sun., Jan QUEENS WATERFRONT, PART miles! brisk pace. Some drop-off points. Walk the Queens waterfront from Flushing to Bayside. Walk through Flushing, College Point, Malba, Whitestone, Fort Totten, and Bayside. Important: Bring water and lunch. Take the #7 train to the Main Street/Flushing station. Meet 9:00 am at northeast corner (by AT&T store). Leader: Bill Wrublewski, cell: Call to confirm the day before hike. Non-member $3. Sat., Feb. 4 SOUTH COUNTY TRAILWAY. 10 to 11 miles, mostly flat with one hill, at a steady pace. No slow hikers please. Hike from Hastings on Hudson to Yonkers, through Tibbetts Brook Park to Van Cortlandt Park on the former Putnam Division Railroad. Bring lunch and beverage. Meet 9 am. Leader: Ludwig Hendel, Call only on Friday evening Feb. 3. Joint hike. Members only. Sat., Feb. 4 - BRONX BOTANICAL GARDENS. No flowers but plenty of stately, snow-clad trees in this winter wonderland. Take the 10:23 am Harlem Line train from Grand Central, arriving at the Botanical Garden Station at 10:42 am. Or, take the No. 2 subway to Allerton Ave., then the No. 26 bus to the Mosholu Gate. Meet just outside the Mosholu Gate at 10:45 am. Admission to the Gardens is free on Saturdays until 11 am. If driving, park in the lot by the station ($12) or on a nearby street. No coordination of rides. Visit will end around 3 but, of course, you're free to leave at any time. Non-members $3. Sun., Feb. 5 - CLOVE LAKE PARK. 2-3 miles. Moderate paced hike around lovely lake with bridges and small waterfalls. See the largest tulip tree on Staten Island. Bring lunch and beverage. Take the 10:30 am ferry from Manhattan to Staten Island. Please use rest room facilities before you get to Staten Island so we can leave promptly. Meet the leader at the train station steps in the rear of the terminal to take the S61/62 bus to Royal Oak Rd. Drivers or those not coming from Manhattan may call leader for instructions. Thurs., Feb. 9 - NYNJTC MEETING AND WALK. 3 miles, at an easy pace. Once more the New York, New Jersey Trail Conference will convene its winter meeting at the Community Church of New York, 90 East 35 th Street in Manhattan at 7:00 pm. A continuation of last year s highly successful walk will meet at 3:00 pm on 25 th Street and 5 th Avenue by the World War 1 Eternal Light Memorial to complete the tour. You will see an old cemetery, a church building that is not a church, pass by the former residence of a great American author, as well as the birthplace of an American President. We will do a night walk in Harriman State Park at a slow pace (You can t go fast in the dark!) and treat this like a day hike in the dark with frequent stops and rests. This is an easy path in the park. In the morning we ll go into town and have breakfast at a diner, take the train back and sleep at home. If not sure what to bring me at nyhiker50@verizon.net for additional information. However, bring at least two flashlights, or spare batteries and bulbs. This will be an enjoyable night in the woods for those that can overcome their fear of the dark. This could also be done by leaving late on Friday night so you can be home on Saturday, so please check with me. Can start calling Monday night the week before the hike for details on answering machine. Leader: Mike Puder, but s preferred. Non-members $3. Sun., Feb BABYLON TO BELMONT. SLOW PACE, 5 miles. Take the 11:35 A.M. train from NY Penn Station to Babylon, arriving 12:50 pm and meet leaders at ticket office. We will do the short hike around Argylle Lake and then hike north past Southard Pond to Belmont Lake. Bring snack and water. No go in rain, snow, if greater than 1 ft of snow on the ground, or if daytime temperatures are below 25 o F. Leaders: Ken King, , nhochike@optonline.net and Phyllis Spisto, Non- members $3. Sun., Feb ANNUAL SINGLE VALENTINE'S HIKE. 10 am. Please join Seatuck Environmental Association and other hiking groups on a moderately paced hike through several types of habitats. Walk is about 5-6 easy miles, past woods, ponds, and streams. We may stop in at the Tackapausha Museum. The museum has recently (hopefully will open by Feb.) undergone a complete renovation with new exhibits. We will meet in the Gazebo on the south side of the Seaford LIRR (train comes every 1/2 hour) but check the schedule. Free parking on weekends. (If problem finding the group- Joanne's cell phone is (516) ). Bring lunch and liquid. No go if rain, snow, sleet, blizzard. Drop out point in the middle of hike. Please register with Seatuck Environmental Association, ( 631) ext. 01; Sun., Feb HASTINGS CIRCULAR. 7 miles at a moderate steady pace, on trails, entirely within inter-connected suburban parks: including Rowleys Bridge, Old Croton Aqueduct, Lenoir Preserve, Draper Park, Burke Estate, Hillside Woods, Zinnzer Park & back to the diner near the Hastings Station. Inclement weather or ground conditions may cancel. Take the 11:20 am Hudson Line from Grand Central Terminal to Hastings (arrives 11:57 am). Drivers park and meet in the northbound commuter lot. Sat., Feb PIERMONT TO NYACK. 9 miles, moderate to brisk pace via a Tallman Mountain Loop and a northward trek on the Old Erie RR bed. Terrain: level-to-mild hills, with one steeper descent. Especially cheerful in light snow, these trails culminate in an optional dinner in Nyack. Bring lunch and water. Meet before 7:45 am at 42 nd Street Port Authority Bus Station, South Wing, at the white Commuter Statues in the ticketing area. Depart 8:15 am outward to Piermont, N.Y. One Way bus 9A/gate 220, arriving Piermont at 9:17 am. Leader: Marvin Malater, Call for hike status and schedule. Joint hike. Non-members $3. Sat., Feb BYRAM RIVER GORGE. 6 miles at a moderate pace. See green hemlocks along a rushing river with possibly some white snow, a blue sky and a yellow sun in Connecticut. Bring lunch and beverage and an extra pair of socks. No smoking on trip. Meet at Grand Central Terminal, upper level information booth at 8:30 A.M. Costs: Approx. $16 round trip/ $11 seniors (½ off if coming from and returning to Fordham Road Metro-North station in the Bronx). Leader: Mayer Wiesen, Call until 10:30 pm. Joint hike with NY Hiking, Outdoors Clubs and Shorewalkers. Non-members $3. Sun., Feb MASSAPEQUA PRESERVE. SLOW PACE, 5 miles. Take the 11:35 A.M. train from NY Penn Station to Massapequa and meet leaders in parking lot on north side of tracks at east end of station. We will hike the Nassau Greenbelt trail north to Southern State and return by either paved bike path or dirt road. The trail is flat but has lots of roots sticking out and some narrow bridges. Bring snack and water. No go in rain, snow, if greater than 1 ft of snow on the ground, or if daytime temperatures are below 25 o F. If it snows take your snowshoes on this joint walk with the Seatuck Environmental Association and North Shore Land Alliance. The Land Alliance s Jane Jackson and naturalist Joanne Tow will lead an exploration of this skinny, scenic woodland. No public transportation is available. Please register with the North Shore Land Alliance, (516) ; OR Seatuck Environmental Association, (631) ext. 01; Sun., Feb ROCKEFELLER PRESERVE. A winter wonderland of snow-covered carriage paths and panoramic vistas. Around 6 miles at a moderately slow pace. Take the 10:20 am MetroNorth Hudson Line train from Grand Central, arriving in Philipse Manor at 11:12 am. This train may also be boarded 10:40 am at the Marble Hill station, one block from the 225th St. stop on the #1 subway. Out in time for the 4:10 pm train back to NYC. Sat., Mar. 3 - HENRY HUDSON TRAIL. 10 miles, flat, at a steady pace. No slow hikers please. Hike the old rail bed along Raritan Bay from Keyport to Atlantic Highlands, passing Keansburg and scenic coastal cliffs to Popamora Point. Bring lunch and beverage. Meet at Port Authority Bus Terminal, near white commuter statue at 9:30 am. Fares: $24 / half price seniors. Leader: Ludwig Hendel, Call to confirm hike status on Friday, March 2, evening only. Members only. Sun., Mar. 4-42nd STREET WALK. 2-3 miles, mostly flat. See the sights of restored theaters, Bryant Park, a statue of Lincoln, Grand Central, the Chrysler Building. Then on to the UN. Return to Grand Central for your choice of lunch. Meet at 11 am at 42nd Street & 8 th Avenue, SW corner. Leader: Bettye Soffer, between 7-9 PM to confirm hike. Rain/snow cancels. 4 Schedule of Activities (222) January/February/March 2012 Page 4 Sun., Mar. 4 - SPUYTEN DUYVIL-RIVERDALE. 6 miles, easy with some ups and downs. Follow the route of Spuyten Duyvil Creek. This is the site of the first 2 bridges connecting Manhattan to the mainland. Hike north the length of Riverdale Park, cross Riverdale and Fieldston historical district and Manhattan College campus. End at #1 subway 242 nd Street stop. Bring lunch beverage and hiking boots. Take the #1 train to Marble Hill, 225 th Street stop. Meet at McDonald s across Broadway from subway exit, at 11:00 am. Cost: Metro Card fares. Leader: Joel Pomerantz, Call before 8PM the day before to confirm hike status. Non-members $3. Sat., Mar PELHAM BAY PARK, ORCHARD BEACH, HUNTER ISLAND, Bronx. (Weather, ice, etc. will vary route). Circular hike, 4 to 6 miles, moderate pace, mixed flat on paved paths and in wooded areas where hiking shoes are recommended for rough and wet spots. Bring lunch and beverages. Meet at 11 am by the fare-booth/turnstiles at Pelham Bay Park station, last stop on the #6 local. Allow approx 1 hr from 14 th St. east. (Also, you can take the Bx12 cross-town Select Bus from 207th St. B way #1 train). Note: You will need to use your Metro card transfer to board the Bx29 bus in the morning. Day Light Saving Time Begins Sunday, March 11, at 2:00 am Sun., Mar. 11 INWOOD HILL & FORT TRYON PARKS. A walk through Inwood & Fort Tryon Parks, with a visit to the Cloisters. About 4 miles, with a few easy hills. After a stroll through Inwood Park, we will cross over into Fort Tryon Park, with its majestic outlook over the Hudson, for lunch (bring lunch and beverage). After lunch, a visit to the Cloisters (admission is "pay what you wish" - $1 is fine), then through the rest of the park, including the Heather Garden. Take A train to 207th Street and meet 10:30 am on the NE corner of 207th & Broadway. The walk should end around 3. No pets; no smoking. Call or to confirm. Leader: Bob Susser, , rsusser@aol.com. Joint hike. Non-members $3. Tues., Mar ROCKLAND LAKE AND HAVERSTRAW. About 5 ½ miles at a moderate pace. Meet at the George Washington Bus Station by 10:30 at the latest to take the 10:40 am 9A bus to Rockland Lake. We ll walk around the lake and then go down toward the river and take the river trail to Haverstraw. There we can get the 4:15 pm ferry to Ossining and then Metro-North back to the city. Mostly flat. Bring lunch and water; wear sturdy shoes. If we have time in Haverstraw, we ll walk about and see the modern sculptures. Bus $4/8; ferry $3/3.50; Metro North $1.75/3.50. Rain cancels. Sat., Mar GARRISON CIRCULAR. 10 miles at a moderate pace, with climbs. Forested rolling hills along generally unimpeded trails. Excursions on the Appalachian Trail, Curry Pond Traverse, and a return from the Arden Point River Overlook of West Point. Bring lunch and water. Meet before 8:25 am in Grand Central Terminal 42 nd Street, Information Booth in the ticketing area, for the 8:47 am train to Garrison, N.Y. arriving 9:45 am. (Check Metro-North for fare). Sun., Mar SCARBORO TO TARRYTOWN VIA OCA & ROCKWOOD HALL PARK. 8 miles, moderate steady pace mostly on trails. Scenic late winter hike using the Old Croton Aqueduct with a lunch stop on an overlook in Rockwood Hall Park. Then back on the OCA & finishing in Tarrytown. Snow and ice may shorten hike. Take the 11:20 am Hudson Line from Grand Central Terminal to Scarboro. Drivers park in Tarrytown & join us on the 12:10 am to Scarboro. We hike back to Tarrytown; coffee & food available near finishing point. SLOW PACE, 5 miles. Take the 10:25 am (check schedule) LIRR train from Penn Station to Oyster Bay; train arrives 11:46 am. Meet leaders outside ticket office at Oyster Bay; short car shuttle to Planting Fields. Easy walk through woods, grounds, and gardens and greenhouses of this glorious Gold Coast era estate, some hills on woodland trails. Buy return ticket from Hicksville since only one train every 2 hours from Oyster Bay to Penn Station. No go in rain or snow. A long fairly gradual uphill at the beginning, downhill at the end, but otherwise mostly gently rolling hills with no scrambling. Around 7 miles at a moderate pace. Call or me beforehand (preferably) to make sure that the hike is on, and if you need or can offer a ride from NYC. Take the 9:51 am Metro North Hudson Line to Garrison (arriving Garrison 11:05 am). Or, take the 9:40 am local at the Marble Hill station (a short distance from the 225th St. stop of the #1 subway) changing at Croton-Harmon for the express. Please sit in the 1st or 2nd open car of the train, and please use the restrooms on the train. Out around 4. No children; no pets; no smoking. Leader: Bob Susser, ; rsusser@aol.com. Members only. Joint hike. Sat., Mar CHINATOWN, EAST MEETS WEST. 3 miles, easy pace, city walk. Learn some history and changes in the expanding place called Chinatown. See some landmarks, ancient graveyard and architecture specific to area. Meet NE corner of Canal St. and Broadway at 12 noon and have lunch at a nearby restaurant, or bring your own to eat at a nearby park. Dress for season. Many trains go to Canal St. and B'way. Take A, C, E train to 6th Ave and Canal, then walk east to B'way. Leader: Susan B., Deep snow, hard rain, temp below 32, very icy or windy conditions making it dangerous walking will cancel. Visit a famous graveyard where two signers of the Declaration of Independence are buried and see the site of the first capitol of the United States and many other historic sites. We will assemble at 11:00 am at the foot of the escalators in the South Ferry Terminal. For further information please call after 8:00 pm. Joint with other clubs. Non-member $3. Thurs., Mar STONE BARNS AND ROCKEFELLER PRESERVE. 6 miles at a moderate pace. Some ups and downs. We ll walk around Rockefeller Preserve and then go over to Stone Barns where we ll have lunch or you can buy something at their café. Meet at Grand Central Station by the information booth to take the 9:20 train to Philipse Manor, arriving at 10:12. Check schedule for any possible changes.
