2 Burgiemen Capitol City Car Show I went to my first Burgiemen Car Show in Sacramento on Saturday, June 23 rd. I had heard great things about this show so decided to go. I wasn t preregistered so I called the number on the registration form. He told me they were sold out but show up with your group and I should get in. Hmmm. OK. I found out that Tom and Gina, Steve and Dawna were leaving Vacaville at 6 AM (!) to go and I could cruise with them. Jeff Singley was going too as a non-registered entry. Cool! Then I learned John and Debbie were leaving Vallejo at like 4 AM to make sure they got a good spot (and to beat Vern). WOW! That s really early for this old retired guy. I shared that info with Gina and she said they d leave Vacaville at 5:30 AM (to make sure Jeff and I got in). So, up at 4 AM, leave Benicia with Jeff at 4:45 to meet the group in Vacaville at 5:30. Man, the sun s not even up! We meet at Starbucks, quick pit stop, and off we go. Tom is the leader in his custom patina truck. With no speedometer it took a bit to get a good speed but he did it and we were at the event around 6:15 or so. Didn t open until 7 so we had plenty of time to watch cars start showing up. There were probably only 50 or so cars in line ahead of us. We saw Mike and Ana drive by with their orange coupe. Then Terry came by in his custom 41? Coupe. Cool! Haven t seen Terry since the Dixon Chillin and Grillin 2 years ago. They were about 20 cars behind us so we made arrangements to come in together at the entrance. John & Debbie were at the front. I think they were 2 nd or 3 rd in line. They opened the park a bit late, had to wait until the portta potties were set up. Once it opened they got us in quickly and parked as a group (except John and Debbie; they were already in their favorite spot). We were looking for Terry since he was only a few cars behind us when we entered. We waited and waited. No Terry. Finally I started walking back through the incoming cars to find him. His car had died about 500 feet from the entrance. Some fuel/electrical failure. He had already brought his trailer around but needed help pushing it on. Ana had found him first and called me. I called Jeff and the others to come help. So we got him loaded up and he decided to take it home. I took his registration and got his dash plaque. I ll have to get it to him. If you recall, Saturday was really, really hot. I think Benicia and Vallejo were at 103F, Vacaville hit 108F. We were pretty concerned about the heat in Sacramento. Turns out we were on the river with lots of shade. There was a nice breeze on the water. I don t think it even got to 95 there. The show it self was awesome. Riverwalk park is beautiful. The Burgiemen had a huge cooking station that went all day. Started with a full breakfast feast; scrambled eggs, sausage, tortillas etc. Toward the end of the breakfast period they transitioned to lunch. Another full spread; hamburgers, hot dogs, tri tip, ribs, corn, potato salad, beans etc. Cold drinks too! WOW! And DOUBLE WOW! They had more raffle prizes than I could count, including a wheelbarrow FULL of booze and another wheelbarrow FULL of wine. Great prizes. I didn t win any but several Boyz members did. We had a great spot close to the river. We had several pop ups tied together for more shade but there were a lot of trees for shade too. Tom brought a blow up wading pool so we had our own foot soaking pool. Awesome! We were quite popular with passerbys. This might be the new standard. Tom also brought frozen Jack cicles. Yum! They ended with awards around 1:30 (nice and early!). Mike and Ana won for Outstanding. It cleared out pretty quickly so we took pictures of our individual cars with the river as a backdrop. We were out by around 2 PM. That s a good ending time! On the way home Tom and Gina invited us to stop by their lovely home in Vacaville for a pit stop. Good timing as traffic had come to a standstill just as we got to Vacaville. I got out of the car and UGH! It was 108F! Thank goodness for AC. So we went in for a quick stop and refreshments. Then we saw the pool. And the DUCK. Let s just say we had a good time cooling off and wrestling the duck. Jeff found a new friend. :) Thanks Tom and Gina for a perfect end to a great day! I think this was probably the best one-day show I ve ever been to. I hope we get another group together for next year. Joe Gracie

3 Yard art for sale, see/call Steve Lane The Pinole Car Show is back and looking good. You may recall that the 2016 show was the 25 th and final show sponsored by the Northern California Cruisers Classic Car Club. This was always a good show held in downtown Pinole. They closed San Pablo Ave to park cars there for the show. The show extended into Fernandez Park with cars and vendors on the grass and baseball field. The Boyz always had a few cars attend, usually led by Vern Kornbrust. John Harris and I grew up in Pinole so we were always there. It was a great venue and I usually met up with old high school acquaintances. The sponsoring club announced in 2016 that they were done. Too much work for too few members. That was a sad day. Earlier this year, Sequoia Real Estate (a local downtown realtor) took on the task to bring the show back. With help of several volunteers from local clubs the show was a great success. It had the layout and feel of the old show! It was a tad smaller than past shows (still had over 300 cars) but the word will spread. Live music was provided by our own Bob Webb and his band, Under the Radar. They sounded better than ever with new members. Thanks Bob! There were several vendors as expected. The Pinole Police Dept was there in force to keep us rowdy folks in line and to show off their new toys. They are now the proud owners of a surplus military armored Rescue vehicle! I instantly felt safer! They were also cruising the show in Zero electric motorcycles. Eerily quiet. The Boyz cars that came were Mike and Ana Gosney with their beautiful 58 Chevy, John Harris with his 69 Camaro convertible, and my 69 Camaro coupe. We were parked on San Pablo Ave. I heard indirectly there was another Boyz car that came later and parked on the ball field but I didn t see who it was. None of the Boyz won an award but the club was mentioned as an active supporter of the event. It was good to have this show return. I hope the Boyz show up with more cars next year. Joe Gracie

4 Vallejo Admirals Show Congratulations to Dan Cordeiro for his win with his 32 Highboy at the Admirals Car Show. Small show with 10 cars representing BUTH. Cars and Coffee 16 Cars, 3 of which were not Boyz cars, made it to Cars & Coffee in Vallejo. This little event is the first Sunday after our club meeting. The club officials mentioned rotating this event to different locations, example: American Canyon near Walmart. Now I m gonna get beat up about this, but I don t see us getting any more cars, let alone people, by moving it monthly since we barely get 10 club cars at our home location. If we want this to grow we need to advertise on social media or websites that list club events. Also It will need to be one day (I.E. 3 rd Sunday) and one location. This would be easier for club members and non club members to remember and might increase our participation. People in the Club are all for setting up events, we should do this or we should do that, so we do, but most don t show up. Same with 3 rd Thursday at PepBoys - 10 to 15 cars show if we re lucky. If you don t like the area and have ideas then let s hear them. 115 members and barely 10% show. This is great exposure for a great club with great ideas and good people. Get involved, go to the events, show some support for your club, but if you don t get involved, then why are you in a car club?

5 John Thomas 1956 Ford Ranchwagon I purchased the car from Don Murray in 2011 for the grand total of $5,000. At that time, it had the 292 Y block with a 3 speed on the column. There was a hole in the drivers side floor board big enough to fall through. The seat had no cushion under your rear, it was springs with an old blanket folded over a few times. The first up grade was the floor boards, which Matt Surett worked his magic on and then some new carpet went in. A year or so later, I decided I needed more padding on my arse, so I took the seats down to Able s for a rebuild. The front seat had to have all new foam installed, while the back seat was good enough to just recover and go. After that the trans decided it was going to give up the ghost. Coming through the toll plaza I lost a gear or two, luckilyi had enough gear to get me home. Found out why when we changed out the trans and discovered no one had put gear oil in it for a few years! Now we get to the motor. The 292 was getting old, lifters sounded like they were coming out of the valve covers. At 50 they made more noise than the exhaust. Someone I know had the brilliant idea to take a good 302 out of his 32 roadster and put in a 347 stroker. So not wanting to waste a good 302, plans began to transpire. Located a Ford AOD & had it rebuilt. Found motor mounts that fit and proceeded to install the 302 and AOD in the wagon. The motor fit like it was meant to be there, and we had to move the rear trans support back about 1 inch. Put in a LoKar cable floor shifter. While that was happening, things got a bit carried away. Next thing you knew we dropped the front and rear, and power steering was added. Somewhere in the middle of all this fun, we decided it needed to have some more character and we caught it on fire. It did quite a bit of damage under the hood, under the dash and blistered the hood. After months of cleaning and repairing the damage, we finally got it in good running shape. It then went on the Boyz cruise in 2014, which was a blast even thought the wagon had its share of problems. Nothing that stopped us from continuing and enjoying the trip. Even got an average of 22 miles to the gallon. Then in 2016 it went to Unlimited Collision on Lemon St. It stayed there for about a year and a half. I was very happy with the fact that it had very little rust. When it finally got painted, I walked in and freaked. My Wimbleton white was more of a white white. WRONG! They had to repaint it to Wimbleton. First thing was the hush matt, from one end to the other. Which allowed me to find all the loose body mounts that were suppose to be done. All in all it was about another six to nine months of fun getting things finished. Its first outing was to the Boyz Waterfront show. I am most pleased to say it was well accepted by my peers. To the pointi even won in a class that had a lot of beautiful cars in it. Thank you guys for appreciating my car. At the beginning of this year I decided it was time for air conditioning. So while at the GoodGuys in August I stopped at the Vintage Air booth and ordered what we needed to do the install. As we already had a March pulley setup for a 302 we decided it was the way to go as we already had a compressor and wouldn t need to buy one. The fun part was getting ready to put the pulley set up on. I can only say they are not meant for an early 302. Things finally got done. Many thanks to Tom for charging the system, twice. Then came the finishing touch in May the Saturday before the Benicia Car show, my pin striper came over and striped the hood and tailgate. Which is the reason I moved the license plate to the bumper. Finally in May of this year it found its way to the upholstery shop to get the interior finished. The guys at Valley Sun Roof did an awesome job. They would call me every other day to come and check out what had been done. The car was kept inside and covered with blankets to protect the paint. So for the most part, the car is finished except for fuel injection. Can t wait for the Boyz cruise in September. I always said I would join the club when the car was done. I did. Thank you John Thomas
