2 2 PANHANDLE BACK COUNTRY HORSEMAN MARCH 2008 Panhandle Back Country Horsemen February 16, 2008 Meeting Minutes Meeting was called to order by President April Linscott at 7:31 pm. Secretary Debbie Samovar read the January meeting minutes and they were approved with changes. Guest present were Denise Fletcher and Carol Wood (both joined). Secretary Debbie Samovar read the treasure s report from Sharon Bruce. We have a balance of $2, in checking, $2, in savings, $6, in a CD and $14, in another CD, for a total cash asset of $25, Bills to be paid were: Debbie Samovar - $23.85 for newsletter printing, $24.60 for postage, $10.00 for Convention Registration / Raffle Flyers, $2.50 for Membership Forms and $8.49 for Feb meeting refreshments. Dee Sverdsten made a motion to pay the bills, seconded by Angie Bissell, motion passed. OLD BUSINESS CONVENTION / OUTDOOR SHOW - Debbie Samovar reported that the ribbons for the photo contests had been ordered and that she was working on getting prices for the banners. Also registration forms are available. If you mail it in before March 15 th, the cost is $45; otherwise it s $55 at the door. The form also has info on who to contact for RV sites and a link for hotel info. April Linscott reported that we still could use a few more volunteers for the bucket raffle. Debbie Samovar had a horseshoe candle holder that Bob Williams made to donate to the bucket raffle. The weather vain that Bob made will be used for the live auction. Prizes for the buck-o-matic still need to be determined. Perry Saathoff informed the group that you don t have to go to the convention to volunteer to assist with the bucket raffle. You can just show up, work a couple of hours and then go around the trade show and not worry about getting an RV site or hotel room. NEW BUSINESS FUND RAISING COMMITTEE Karen Kimball reported that she, Robert Wuest, and Gene Bruce met and discussed several things and open up to the club for input. We could have a packing clinic with Dutch oven cooking in the spring. Another thought is putting on a trail challenge, a timed event with obstacles, and would take a little longer to put together, possible September, with Farragut Park being the site. We would try to get sponsors and set this up to have spectators. The goal being to get our name out there and draw a crowd. Debbie Samovar reported that she put on a Triathlon in San Diego, getting mountain bikers, hikers and equestrians together, pair participants and sending each out on different trails. The team with the best combined time won $150 bucks, split 3-ways. The event made $1000 after prizes and BBQ, and help generate positive feelings for the equestrian community among the other groups. Other ideas would be to: Find a more aggressive way to make funds in addition to our CD s, such as Mutual Funds. So we could use anyone in the club with some financial savvy to step up and investigate this for us. Steak rides are also popular. We have the Linscott ride, but it is for club members only and we would need a trail boss to take this on. It would require getting pre-registration/payment to get an accurate head count, as this event can get costly to put on. At the end of the year, rather than doing a gift exchange, have one item per family that is then auctioned off. Items could be baked goods, tack, house décor, etc. Karen Kimball Paint club generates upwards to $ doing this with just families participating. Set up a monthly raffle where items are donated by club members or donated by feed/tack stores. The when you come to the meetings you can buy tickets ($1.00 each or 6/$5) and win whatever might be on the table that meeting. The saddle club that Debbie Samovar belonged to sometimes brought in $100 with just 15 people attending. This is easy to do, just requires someone to commit to coming to the meetings, collecting the items and selling the tickets. Bob Williams asked how much money we generated from the picture painted by April s mother. Amount not known, Sharon Bruce might know. Additionally, Judy said she would be willing to do another painting for us. Lea Williams reported that she s part of a new Mustang club that is just forming and they have no money. So she is ing every tack store, western wear, manufacturers, etc, asking them to donate. So far she s gotten Cowboy Magic to donate a case of product, a subscription to the John Lyon s magazine, a saddle pad from Clint Anderson. She s asking for anything from a saddle to a hoof pick, a jacket or a pair of socks, anything. Bob Williams made a motion that we investigate the trail challenge, seconded by Alan Harper. Bob said that he would help with the physical part of putting the obstacles together. Karen Kimball said we should get a committee formed as soon as possible to design the obstacles, work out the details with Farragut Park and get sponsors. Marion Crumb volunteered to be on the committee. Need to think up big sponsors, such as Les Schwab. EVENTS COMMITTEE Terry Sverdsten asked if we could combine the trailer brake inspection with the chain saw certification. Byron Miller confirmed that George would do the certification. The place will be at Terry s, and use Debbie Samovar s 78 trailer and set a time for March or April. See calendar for list of events. Additionally, as part of what we do for the club, we need a volunteer to head the Education Programs. There is an agenda of presentations to put on at the meetings. There is Leave No Trace, Horse Safety, Defensive Horsemanship, and Bob Marshall Wilderness CD. This is an easy job to do, just need to organize the material and present it at the meetings. LIGHTHOUSE GRANT PROJECT Last year we did the hitch rails at Marie Creek. This year we re thinking of planning something for the Wahoo Trail, a trail that we ve worked on many times before, but there is nothing at the trail head. Maybe putting in feed bunks, hitch rails, high lines. The FS has cleared the area for parking, so now we need to establish it as a stock use only camp. Tracy Gravelle has been working with us on this. ANNUAL AUDIT - Perry & Genia Saathoff reviewed Sharon Bruce s books and found them to be in perfect order. We have around $25, and the club is doing well. With the financial environment the way it is, and CD rates dropping, we should look for places to put some of our money. Bob Williams made a motion to adjourn, Perry Saathoff seconded, meeting adjourned at 8:20 P.M. There were 19 in attendance. Bob Williams did a demonstration on Knot Tying and said that we could find these knots in an old Boy Scout Handbook. Respectfully submitted by, Deborah Samovar Secretary

5 MARCH 2008 PANHANDLE BACK COUNTRY HORSEMAN 5 Prepare Your Horse Trailer for Travel Season by: Edited Press Release, Reprinted from Horse.com, February Article # Before the start of the summer travel season, it is critically important for horse owners to perform basic yet essential maintenance on their trailers. This will be time well spent because it will ensure that trailers will be in optimal shape to provide safe passage for precious cargo during the upcoming season. "A good roadside assistance program is something all horse owners should have but hope they will never have to use," said Mark Cole, managing member for USRider, a national provider of roadside emergency assistance for horse owners. "To that end, our mission is to continually educate horse owners about trailering safety." To provide a reliable and accessible source of information about trailering safety, USRider maintains an Equine Trailer Safety Area on its web site. "We have carefully developed this area to be a resource with helpful and practical topics--all free and available to members and non-members alike," added Cole. "Our Web site is designed so visitors can print out information as a handy reference. We also post safety bulletins as new information develops." Some of available resources include a list of items every horse trailer should have on board, short trip and long trip precautions, and trailer inspection procedures. Here are some tips to prepare your trailer for the upcoming travel season: Remove and inspect all wheels and hubs or brake drums. Inspect suspension for wear. Check tightness of hanger bolt, shackle bolt, and U-bolt nuts per recommended torque values. Check brake linings, brake drums, and armature faces for excessive wear or scoring. Check brake magnetic coil with an ohmmeter. The magnetic coil should check 3.2 ohms (+/- 0.3ohms). If shorted or out of tolerance, replace. Lubricate all brake moving parts, using a high temperature brake lubricant. Remove any rust from braking surface and armature surface of drums. Inspect oil or grease seals for wear or nicks. Replace if necessary. Inspect and grease wheel bearings. In addition to these recommendations, horse owners are advised to check all trailer tires, (including spares) for signs of dry rot, correct air pressure, faulty air valves, uneven tire wear, overall tire wear, and damage. Use a high-quality air pressure gauge to inspect tire pressure before each trip. Always replace tires if worn or damaged. In addition, tires should be replaced every three to five years regardless of mileage. When replacing tires, always replace the valve stems. USRider recommended that only high quality tires specifically designed and rated for trailers be used--never use retread or automobile tires on a horse trailer. It is also important to service the wheel bearings every 12,000 miles or annually (regardless of mileage) due to moisture build-up. Keep a spare set of wheel bearings in your trailer in case of premature failure. Be sure to inspect trailer wiring and lighting; inspect door latches and grease the doors; inspect the floor (be sure to remove any rubber mats so the entire floor can be examined); and inspect and lubricate mechanical moving parts, such as the hitch and suspension parts. If the trailer has been sitting for a while, check for wasp nests, spider webs, and any other creatures that might have taken up residence. Cole also reminded equestrians to check the contents of their equine and human first aid kits. Those hauling horses are also encouraged to program emergency contact information into their cell phones under the listing designation "ICE," which stands for In Case of Emergency. This can aid emergency workers in identifying victims and determining who needs to be notified in case of an accident. Horse owners should also ensure that their emergency contact information is stored in their tow vehicle. To facilitate this, USRider has developed an In Case of Emergency form and posted it online for horse owners to print out. Simply fill in the blanks and store copies in the tow vehicle as well as in the trailer. Additional recommendations, including a Power of Attorney form, are posted on the USRider Web site.
