NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND PAGE 7 Cherry Torte Source [The Neapolitan Recipe Collection, Terence Scully (trans.)]: Torta de Cerase. Tolle cesrase rosse ho piu negre che si possa trovare, he poi caverai fora quello suo osso he pista le cerase in uno mortaro; poi piglia rose rosse he batile - dico, solo le foglie - cum uno cultello molto bene tute; poi habi uno poco de caso fresco he veghio cum specie a discretione, he canella he bono zenzaro cum poco pipero he zucaro, he miscolarai tute queste cose insieme, agiongendoli.vi. ova; et farai una crosta de pasta sopra la padella he cum meza libra de butiro, he ponella ha a cocere, dandoli el foco temperato; he quando he cotta, pone del zucaro he aqua rosata. Ingredients: 1 pound cherries 1 pound ricotta cheese 1/2 cup sugar 3 eggs 1/2 tsp. ginger 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/8 cup rose petals 1 pinch black pepper 1 Tbsp. rose water Directions: Grind cherries - if canned cherries are used then drain them before and after grinding, and be careful not to puree them. Note that the flavor of the pie is altered drastically by using dried cherries, giving the finished product a much stronger "raisin-spice" flavor. Mix ground cherries, ricotta, sugar, and eggs. Add ginger, cinnamon, pepper, and rose petals. Mix well and pour into unbaked pie crust. Cover with top crust and bake at 350 F until top crust is golden brown. Just before serving, make a small hole in the top crust and pour in rosewater. This recipe is from 15th Century Naples, and is obviously vegetarian.

NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND PAGE 8 You know you re a SCAdian when... (AS PERCEIVED BY THE POPULACE OF THE EAST)...a friend says "You really must go with me to the next event...the women are gorgeous and all as blind as bats!"...you have 200 yards of fabric, and another 200 yards of trim, and you don't sew....you take note of the descriptions of the artwork from the 1300s looking for color ideas....your roommate asks you to bring her sword to a wedding reception for the arch, and when you can't find it, you bring your own....you are reading a book with pictures of art from the 1300s and you study them for garb ideas....you forget to bring your hammer to help a friend with remodeling, because after all you aren't bringing your forge....watching a documentary on ancient Egypt, the "scientist" is talking about things found, and points to several small "sticks" saying, "We don't know what those are", and the SCAdian shouts out, "Bobbin lace bobbins, obviously!"...and they were....you are reading a book with picture of art from the 1300s and you study them for garb ideas.

NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND PAGE 9 Submissions of the Populace HERE YOU WILL FIND ANY A&S, FARFULS, PICTURES OR ARTICLES SUBMITTED BY THE POPULACE OF THE CROWN BARONY OF THE BRIDGE TALES FROM THE BLACK DOLPHIN BY SIGNORA ANNA DAUZZANO DI SIRACUSA PART 2 I stood there in front of the dilapidated, dry-docked vessel with a disgusted look on my face. My uncle looked, well, he looked incredibly satisfied with his arms crossed over his chest as he grinned, also gazing toward the ship. So. He began, Where do you want to start? Tio, I answered, This thing isn't fit to support rats. The hull was in terrible condition, with large patches of dry rot and holes throughout. The sails were rolled and frayed, and one of the masts was completely gone. The boat, as far as I knew, had been out of commission now for most of my life in Naples. I felt insulted. Anna, the hardest part is over. You see, the ship is already built, you just need to patch it up...a bit...get your crew and get it sailing. Wouldn't it be less expensive to simply build a new ship, Tio? I asked. Maybe, but that's not what I'm asking you to do. He never stopped smiling, Oh! Look at the size of that beast! He pointed at a large rat that had come from one of the holes in the hull and scurried down one of the ropes, and I winced. Something wrong, my darling? No. I replied wryly. Nothing at all wrong, Tio. Good. I m giving you until sundown to come up with a business plan. You can ask your brothers for assistance, but I don t expect them to be very helpful. My uncle looked remarkably proud of himself, I

NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND PAGE 10 need to head back to the warehouses to check on today s inventory. I trust you to look after yourself as usual. He was gone before I turned to protest, and I stood there, sighing, and sneering up at the rotting corpse of a has-been ship. Maximo snuck up behind me when I wasn t looking, and startled me as he began to speak. You know, I was jealous. He grinned as I nearly fell over with his words, Was. Fortunately, I have no reason to be now. I d rather be married than deal with this! I d rather you be married so I wouldn t have to deal with you, either. Forever charming. I sneered, and looked back at the boat, So, what should I do? What do you mean, what should you do? Max glared at me, Have you paid no attention since we ve lived here? Get the shipwrights here and see if they can patch the damned thing! Honestly, Anna, if women had brains, they might just be deadly! A laugh came from behind us, and Max turned to a brick being tossed toward his head. He ducked in time, fortunately, and the stone fell into the water with heavy splash. You again! I shouted, I thought I told you before to stay off of my family s docks! We had a regular group of foppish hooligans that often came around to cause problems when my uncle wasn t surveying the ships, and they especially liked to pick brawls with my brothers. Their fathers were some of the more prominent men of Naples, namely the Spanish lords that controlled the city, and they often felt that they were above the law as far as pushing around the working folk while being overdressed and overcompensated with their long swords at their sides. We don t listen to Sicilians. One of the men said in Spanish, and Max rolled his eyes. You take our taxes, you should listen. He replied in kind. My father thanks you for your money. The Spaniard replied, and rubbed his hand down the front of his black embroidered doublet. Expensive garment. I smiled, I know, as that is my uncle s velvet. It s of silk from Constantinople, if I remember correctly. Do you like it? I have several gowns of it, myself.

NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND PAGE 11 Shut up, girl. Another man said, Know your place! Fine. I said, and pulled the dagger from the sheath on the back of my brother s belt. Whose trousers do I have to cut off, this time? Anna! Max jumped back once I had his weapon in hand, Not again! I ll take my sleeves off, this time! No! He drew his long blade, and handed it to me, Have some manners, for the Lord s sake. Is it a bad idea to give a girl a sharp pointy thing? Is a boat really just a hole in the water you throw money into? Are Anna and Maximo about to become paella? Stay tuned to Notes from Underground for the next installment of Tales from the Black Dolphin!

NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND PAGE 12 Baronial Court Report BELOW YOU WILL FIND THE BARONIAL COURT REPORT AS PRESENTED BY LORD JAKE DE TWELFOAKS, OUR BARONIAL HERALD, FROM BLACK ROSE BALL At the Court of his Excellency, Baron Eloi Abelard did bear witness to: This awarding of Bridge's new youth service award, "The Kid" to Aethelthryth of House Lockwood. It was also made known as Aethelthryth is daughter to the Prince and Princess of Tir Mara, she may also be called Lady of the Northern Shores. At this time Lady Catherine O'brien and Lady Sorcha inghean ui Ruarc were called forth to pay their annual taxes. Lady Catherine first turned her attention to his Highness and presented gifts of tokens to be bestowed as their Highnesses deemed fit along with a wood-burned crafted box in which to carry them. Her taxes due to his Excellency were then paid in the form of hand-woven cords in blue and gold thread from which such tokens may be hung and displayed. Lady Sorcha next came forth and made payment with a scroll of proposed blazons for badges to be worn by recipients of certain Baronial awards. They are: The Kid: Azure, a goat statant argent perched atop a bezant The Alcantara: Azure, in chief a keystone argent, and in base a doubly-arched bridge Or The Horatius: Azure, in chief a round shield argent, and in base a sword and spear in saltire Or The Lotus: Azure, in chief a lotus blossom argent, and in base an open book, Or After this payment was made, Baron Eloi had called forth the Smoking Bridge Guild of Libation Brewers. It was now that Eloi offered to patronize the Guild as often and in any way he coulds. That is to say, he would be a Patron in support of the Guild, and invited all in attendance to join him in spreading the word and works of these fine folk. Baron Steffan ap Kennydd was then brought forward to make payment to his student Lady Adelaide Wanderer in front of witnesses so none might claim him to be lax in making such payment. The traditional payment of two blue candles was well received by Lady Adelaide, however Prince Kenric did make a point to mention that Picture courtesy of Baron Sarant the Myopic. Calligraphy and illumination by Lady Sorcha, wording by Ulrich Reinhart. he had not received payment of candles in some time. Master Steffan reminded his Highness that such time is approximately as long as his Highness has been a peer of the realm in his own right

NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND PAGE 13 Ingeborg Waldersdottir was next invited to be given a Lotus of Bridge in return for the gift of music she brings with her to our events whenever she attends. Lady Eilidh Froach and Lord Aedan Mac Tigernain were asked to come before his Excellency's court. It was here that they were given their Freedom of the Bridge as should have had happened nigh on two years prior, but Lady Eidlidh and Lord Aedan had pressing engagements at the time and left before such presents could be made, This closed the Court until later in the evening when it was reopened. This was done so that Lady Anna Dauzzano da Siracusa could be brought before all and be presented with the Burdened Tyger scroll which was awarded to her at Clan War AS XLVI. At this time Lady Anna did also see fit to pay the Barony's share of her ship's profits unto his Excellency. Payment was made in the form of jewelry and gold and silver bars which his Excellency did share with the populace. The children in attendance later showed appreciation for this generosity by using said jewelry and gold and silver bars to craft a portrait of Baron Eloi. Picture courtesy of Lord Jake de Twelfoaks. The final court business before dancing resumed was the calling forth of Mina dipasquale so she could be presented with the Award of Arms scroll awarded to her at the Coronation of Lucan and Jana, April 2 AS XLV, and formally introduced for the first time as Lady Mina dipasquale.

NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND PAGE 14 Baronial Meeting Notes HERE YOU WILL FIND A SUM-UP OF EACH OFFICER OF BRIDGE S REPORT AT THE PREVIOUS MEETING HELD ON FEBRUARY 12TH, 2012 Meeting started at 7:42 Baron: not present. play nice together, don t be idiots Seneschal: New Business: I would like to make a motion for us to buy 2 handbooks so that each Chatelaine has one to share. Magister should have one too. Aine is donating one so there will be 3. Motion passed to buy 2 known world handbooks. Aine is sending to the the revised Forward into the past to Chatelaine as well. Pete can t read his own notes...maurin: Black Rose Ball went very well. I think it was the best use of the black rose regalia. They were the most helpful site people Maurin has ever worked with. I think it was a pretty successful event. We broke even! If anyone is looking to put in a bid for black rose ball I d start looking into halls NOW, most places start booking a year in advance. Otherwise we ll end up at URI. The band doesn t want to do Black Rose Ball next year :( the individual players may do it but not the band as a whole. There were a large group of newbies from Mutton and Meadm a renaissance festival, that were there and were well welcomed and are planning on attending dance classes at the novice schola near them. Voted Aine Deputy Senenshal. Voted Adelaide as Deputy Webmistress and she would also like to relinquish her position as MoAS as soon as we have a replacement. B.U.N. is officially gone. BridgeChat and NFU is the official mode of communication for Bridge. Old Business: Tents: we gotta buy stuff for tents? Yes we do. A few issues with that, we re going to need to buy some lumber and rip the lumber. I believe Ussel volunteered his workshop. Has anyone done any price research at all? Coiaou suggested douglas pine. could be 100/150 dollars. Need ropes too. figure inches per ropes. Need stakes. Carl said he d make the stakes. Really we need the whole set up package. need pins for the tops of the polls. Couaiu will research the costs not to exceed $300 without permission. Herald: had court at BRB. Awarded Marion Balders daughter a Lotus of Bridge, Aiden and Ildee got their (??). We have heraldry for the new bridge badges. Chronicler asked for a court report. Said he would send one over. Chronicler: submit sumbit sumbit!!! that is all. The populace would like to keep You Know You re a SCAdian when... and possibly try to find more fun things for everyone to participate in. Webmaster: Website has been recently updated with all the new officers and contact info.

NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND PAGE 15 Exchequer: We have money...we HAD money! I have the latest bank statement. Give or take the outstanding withdrawals and deposits we have $ in the bank. Does that include black rose profits or not? It came in even so yes. I will not be at the next baronial meeting but I will inform Caelia of anything so she can report. Financial Policy is in the works...courses on how to run troll is also in the works... Archivist: Things are archived. Magister: We had a GS demo and it went well. The Mohr Library Demo will be on May 5th, like last year it s going to be big and fun. Tom and I have been talking of having workshops/lectures prior to the event (weeks before) to lead up to the event. I need a discretionary budget to work with...no one really has a budget, the barony has one and vote on it as we go. There s no reason we shouldn t be able to pay for flyers or handouts. Ulric suggested both the chatelaines and magisters work together. Are demos considered fund raisers? you can request a donation and if you didn t then you didn t. Adelaide said that if you don t charge some nominal fee they [the places we are going] don t take you seriously. We have this handy dandy free demo worksheet we made and at the bottom it says donations are requested not required. If we are making up flyers or spending money on the demo we should probably ask for a donation for materials so that we re not spending and then loosing money on it. If we re doing a lecture I would assume [they] can make copies of handouts and do the advertising. It wouldn t be our responsibility. Keep track when you do school demos they have a budget for these kinds of things so we should get it from them. There are no rules but we will never turn down a donation. As long as you can float the money to originally pay we will reimburse you. Thank you all for so being easy. FARFUL!!!! We have a sign up sheet here for anyone who would like to sign up to teach at Mohr Library. Chancellor Minor: Position is vacant. Please apply to your Local Seneschal if you are interested in the position. Chatelaine: NEW PERSON WAS AT THE MEETING! Reina is out of town so I agreed to give report. Reina and I are going to meet next week to go over gold key, we want to see the condition of everything. Elizabeth has a big box of stuff to donate. We are looking for loaner feast gear too to add to what we have. Clothilde has some tankards to donate. Pete has some things to donate as well. We need to mark them though. We are figuring out how to do that too. Maybe napkins? Loretta said she can make them. I will get some muslin and rip it up for you. I am asking around to see if anyone has any children s garb to donate for girl scout demos to try on? And last but not least, we are trying to work on something to hang the garb up and out of the totes so that when we have an event people can see it all. They have to be portable and able to be taken up and put back down. Clothilde, For the discussion, I have worked with racks, I would go for the bed bath and beyond ones because they re durable and go up and go back down easily. Cost around 60ish give or take...we motioned for the Chatelaines to spend money on clothing racks. Couldn t hurt to put a donations welcome bucket for gold key? Pete

NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND PAGE 16 doesn't think so because we already have a donation bucket at troll and we don t want give us money all over the place. Knight Marshall: not present, still looking for a site for thursday heavy list. Thrown Weapons report: We do not have a range as of today. I took the liberty as discussed to get weapons for the barony to get spear heads, they re short and they go into both hard and soft targets. I m supposed to be getting together with Fargus to have targets built and he has specifications on how that works. We still need to order the actual axes and knives to get started and once we do I d like to start practices in my back yard. Ralph also suggested another site which isn t used 99% of the year at St.Mary s Feast Society. Mina suggested talking to Radagast. I have plenty of space in my back yard as long as you don t throw them at the chickens!! Mistress of A&S: we ve got a lot going on, been doing a lot of crafts and such lately. We had silk painting Sunday and we had a lot of fun and learned what not to do next time...if anyone has anything they d like to do or learn let her know. Chirgeon: in communication with the Northern Region about what reports are due and such. She has been warranted. Mistress of the List: not present. Keeper of the Cutumal: not present. Bids for Events: Adelaide intended to make a bid for a German Free Market in place of Tavern. A Market evert with a la carte money for food and drinking. Still having fighting, fencing, thrown weapons and archery but also with merchant tables. There will encouragement for BARTERING chotchkees instead of just paying with money. Upcoming Events: Knowne World Heraldic Symposium. We have about 10 reservations! Still taking reservations until very late in May, fee is $35. Need a head count for food and a copy of proceedings. Maurin hans t gotten a single article for the proceedings. Apparently a lot of people are saying we re going we just haven t pre-reg d yet! Meeting Adjourned at 8:42PM Next baronial meeting is April 1st at 2:00PM at Wishford Hall.
