There was a British Car Show, given by the Austin Healey Club at the Frank Liske Park, in Concord, N.C. on Sunday June 13 t h It was the day that this unbearable heat wave started that lasted 18 days. I walked around that park among the cars and felt like I was going to pass out. The night before was the June PKWS meeting at Don and Mary Ann Penix s house? I was milling around after the meeting and Carol Mathis said something about rescuing some fish and did anyone want some goldfish? Well, I jumped right on this offer. I told her we would be out near her that next day so we made arrangements. After the car show, which we left earlier than expected due to heat, we drove to Carol and Leo s. A real nice treat was seeing one of my old fish swimming with the big boys. THE BEGINNING OF THE KOI FIXATION. Sometime around 1998 I met Terri Havey, a former PKWS member, who had a small watergarden with a few goldfish and a koi.

I grew up just off the Mississippi River in Minnesota, was terrified of the water but was always intrigued by the fish my daddy brought home. Russell and I have had little aquariums since we met. THE BEGINNING OF THE KOI FIXATION. Sometime around 1998 I met Terri Havey, a former PKWS member, who had a small watergarden with a few goldfish and a koi. A year of so later she enlarged her pond and I got to watch. She introduced me to another friend who had about 20 koi in her pond. In 2005 the friend moved and needed somewhere for her koi to go. In a really sweet voice I asked Russell to build us (me) a pond so Trudi s koi would not die. Memorial Day 2005 we broke ground on our front pond, which is about 8,000 gallons with a 25 winding stream. For five years the only kind of filtration we had was a skimmer, which was no filtration. We started off with about 13 koi from my friend. Russell did a tree job for Allen Lee, our treasurer, and he told us about Brady Brandwood/Lotusland Koi Farm and PKWS. Over all we must have done something right by nature because the next spring we had plenty of babies to watch grow. It was April of this year that Russell, with much information from a lot of people, made our filtration system. It consists of 2 bottom drains, which Les Mize helped us put in, going to a 10,000 gph in-line Monsoon pump, going to 4-55 gal rubber drums hooked together with 3 pvc which pumps back into our 25 stream. Now we just need to beautify our filtration area. GOD sure blessed us in our ignorance with our koi pond. Two years after we started our backyard pool area we, of course, had to have another pond so we could enjoy the koi from the pool. As soon as the pool people were finished digging the hole for the pool, Russell showed me how to dig a hole with the tractor, and I dug a hole for the backyard koi pond. The backyard pond is about 3,000 gallons and approximately 2 ½ deep. A Savio skimmer feeds the larger waterfall and a FlluidArt bead filtration with a turbo vortex system feeds the smaller waterfall. Les Mize and Tracy McCorkle were instrumental in putting in the bead filtration system in the back yard. They helped us put it where I wanted it and then a month or so later Russell and I had to move it because it would not keep its prime. Les tried to tell me this but I was too stubborn to listen. Imagine that. Many plants, a foot bridge, a pergola, and a small pier later, I think (Russell hopes) we are done. Con td Page 3

3 July 2010 page Pond Tour The 2010 PKWS pond tour will we held Saturday July 24th from 9am till 5pm. Cost is $10 per person and children under 12 are free. This year we have eight ponds across the region. The tour will begin at the home of Terry and Mary Ellen McClain Heritage Place, Charlotte, NC This year the tour will feature the ponds of the Long, Lee, McClain, Penix, Stead, Reiter, Huntley, and Theroux families. See Mary Ellen McClain s comments on tour below. We also have a preformed goldfish pond with 3 goldfish, and we have 2 preformed water lily and water iris ponds. They are all beautiful. We enjoy many quiet evenings at the front pond which is very serene and peaceful. And many late nights at the back pond in the pool. Come spend some time with us and our fish. Now the mask disappeared before Carol adopted him; but she still keeps his name, and he seemed very happy in his new home. Carol and Leo took Terry and me down to the adoption or rescue center where there were some koi and goldfish in perfectly crystal clear water. The container was one of those old ink containers. Leo scooped out 6 nice 3-4 inch goldfish for us. He then provided a bag and oxygen and rubber banned the bag and sent us on our way. All the gold fish are doing fine in my above ground formed plastic pond. I cannot wait for babies! On July 1, 2010, I received alarming news. The AKCA has given notice they will no longer have liability insurance for special events. The carrier dropped AKCA coverage effective 6/30/10 as a result of a claim. They will continue to provide coverage for our socials and meetings. However, to obtain coverage for tours, shows, and other events, it was astronomically expensive. AKCA has informed the individual clubs to obtain their own liability coverage for single special events. Therefore, we are currently looking for liability coverage for our pond tour scheduled for July 24, If we cannot obtain coverage, we may be forced to cancel the tour. We have been given a contact name to help us locate some insurance. I will report our findings. Our club will need to address our future insurance needs for koi shows, pond tours and special events. FUN POND FACT Both Koi and Goldfish are egg scatterers. This means they distribute their eggs wildly around the pond and due to the tiny size of the eggs you might not know they have spawned. Try gently running your hand along the liner just below the water line. Often you can feel the everso tiny bumps that are the eggs adhering to the liner. Checking the roots of your Water Hyacinths or other floating plants might also reveal a bunch of eggs hidden there.
