1 LGRV RANCH HAND NEWS APRIL 2013 EDITORIAL One of the most important duties of individuals belonging to any group, municipality, state, country, etc. is to have a say in what is going on in your immediate world or environment. There are many adages about group behavior and survival, but four of the best and maybe most important are: 1. Keep the group agreeable to the group. 2. Use the resources of the group. 3. Let the group know the group. 4. Let the group take care of the group. In the first adage you accomplish this by having a get together, pot luck dinner, walking the Park in the morning or evening and stopping at your neighbors place to making sure they are OK. Saying Howdy and waving are great ways to break the ice especially if things are not going to well between you and your neighbor. We were all put here to take care of each other and if your neighbor is agreeable with you, then they will also look after you. Step two is a real no brainer. It goes along with the saying There is no one as smart as all of us. So if there is a project going on and you have been through that exercise before, offer your experience and help. Not all help has to be physical to the point of exhausting someone. Little things like vacuuming the clubhouse or washing windows is a big help, baking or making sandwiches. I get by with a little help from my friends. Thirdly we find out about our neighbors life experiences by listening to them or writing about someone for all to share. Just sitting down with someone and asking what they did before retiring or where they are from can be an enriching experience. Ken Follett is one of the greatest historical fiction authors of our time. He does research for his novels by not just reading but sitting down with people and listening to their history and family genealogy and lore. Start your own book by talking with a neighbor. Lastly, make a point of noticing what is going on around you. Too many times we never see the forest for the trees. We need to invest in the care of US, because for some this is the only family they have left. It takes a RV Ranch to take care of a RV Ranch. We can take someone who does not feel well a meal, offer to pick up their mail or go to the store for them. It s called Pay it forward. Tomorrow may be your day of need.

2 The bottom line for all of this is that we need to invest in our community, help each other, come to the meetings and participate and most importantly we need to vote. By voting we each have a say and we keep our community going forward. LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE The LGRVR Landscape Committee met Tuesday March 12, 2013 to discuss our 2013 landscaping. We will finish out the back garden area with Austin stone border (we may have a donation for this, we hope!). We will be replacing annual plants with perennials where necessary. The front of the clubhouse around the mailbox and picnic shed area will have the mulch removed and replaced with washed stone to match stone already along the road and bar ditch. Existing mulch will all be moved to the back garden for now. The garden area behind the clubhouse will have additional plants added to extend the garden to the back door. Ken will be weed spraying this next week. Our work day is coming up next month and we will have landscape projects listed. Plants are being transplanted from homeowner lots to our common gardens with additional plants being added from existing funds and the upcoming fundraiser (Thanks Cindy Fox!). If necessary, the landscape committee will plan an additional spring fundraiser. We discussed future irrigation projects to include possible rain barrel collection along with other options. Please do not plant in common areas without talking with one of the members of the landscape committee. It is rumored that Ken cannot tell plants from weeds and may spray weed killer on what you plant!!! ANNUAL ELECTIONS AND WORK DAY Mark your calendars for April 20, At 7:00 AM doughnuts and coffee will be offered at the clubhouse. Then at 8:00 AM the meeting will be called to order for voting to begin. The meeting will then be recessed and Clean-UP Day will commence. Voting will close at 11:30 AM with counting of the votes to begin immediately by the Nominating Committee (Ken Collins, Penny Repp, and Darla McGee). Clean-Up Day will cease between 11:30 AM and 12:00 noon. Our box lunch dinners will be served from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM with donations going to benefit the funding of our new flat screen TV. Be sure to buy an extra box lunch for supper. The meeting will reconvene at 12:00 noon with the results of the voting announced and the swearing in of the Board of Directors of the POA. ELECTION COMMITEE David Harrison has decided not to run as POA President for another term due to recent health problems. Our prayers go out to David; get better soon. Nominations end the last day of March. Please contact Ken Collins if you would be interested in running as President of the POA Board. LGRVR has two VP's along with other capable officers to enable the President to travel and enjoy our RV lifestyle. Do not be hesitant because of the time commitment. Delegate and enjoy living here! 3 HOT TIP Looking for a great deal on a TV, kitchen appliances, tools or a refrigerator? You need to go visit NEXT DOOR MERCHANTS. They are located off Fall Creek Highway on the right just before you get to the De Cordova light. The store is at the end of all those warehouse looking buildings on the left hand side (5107 Fall Creek Highway). You have probably noticed their sign next to the road but figured it was a second hand place. You are in for a great surprise. They had a Samsung 32 LED TV for $ and a 32 LCD for $ The place is very clean and they have top quality name brand items. Owned by Gary and Toya Unger, they buy at auctions and clearance items from Sears and other major companies at pennies on the dollar. Many are brand new still in the box items and some are refurbs or slightly used. Everything is marked plainly if other than new. They also offer a warranty on everything they sell even if it is a demo. Check it out. They may have just that item you are looking for and save you a bunch of cash at the same time. DAY TRIP IDEAS DAVID S STOVE SHOP in Weatherford is a true treasure land of everything you can only imagine. Located on the service road of I-20 and Mikus Road (FM 5) at mile marker 415, it looks like an old hardware store. They are also a John Deere dealer, sell windmills for your yard, smokers, fire pits and enough yard art to decorate the city of Fort Worth. Now that s just outside. Inside you can find Loge cast iron cook ware (some of the pieces you will not find anywhere else), wood burning cook stoves, fireplace tools and equipment, wood and pellet burning heat stoves, fire place equipment, log racks, chimes, and on and on and on. If you have never been there, you need to allow several hours to look around. Open: Tuesday through Friday 9 AM - 6 PM Saturday 9 AM - 3 PM Closed: Sunday and Monday On Saturdays they have meat samples that they pass out that is cooked on their smokers and using the spices they carry. This is in the room at the very back of the store. Then there is the room that has all of the antique junk you never knew existed like ice tongs, meat scales, old silver ware, display cases, items that came from old general stores. You can literally find everything needed for a house or cabin (including the doors) right here. There is also a really great Deli in the far back that offers up some of the finest sandwiches you can imagine. Oh, and they bake all their bread and rolls right there. You need to save room for some of their handmade pies and cakes or fried pies. The desserts change from week to week depending on what the chef decides on for the day. If you are still hungry when you finish then go in towards town and stop at the Mesquite Pit. The food is awesome. They have a mesquite smoked shrimp plate that is to die for as well as their steak fish dishes AND their chicken fried steak. This is a great family place with a warm and homey feeling. Bon appetite y all!! CLEAN-UP DAY PROJECTS

4 The following are some of the major projects that need to be accomplished on Clean-UP Day. When you decide which project you would like to help with please, contact Ken Collins, Cindy Fox, Jan Martinie, Carole Frey or Jerry Ketchum. We will also try to have a sign up list at the clubhouse. 1. Vacuum, mop, clean and dust the clubhouse (Spring Clean) 2. Power-wash the outside of the clubhouse, picnic tables, pool furniture and pool deck. 3. Rake the leaves and cleanup the picnic park and kid s play area. 4. Clean the drainage ditch at entrance of all leaves, sticks, etc. and mow all of the area outside the fence. 5. If needed, mow the picnic park area. 6. Repair the hole in the roof of the old smoker shed and move one of the picnic tables underneath. 7. If the gravel has arrived spread from mail boxes to shed, re-level and raise the stones by the mail boxes. We want to try and drain the water away from this area if possible. 8. Transplant donated plants from Carole Frey s property. GUERIN SATURDAY FESTS Every Saturday from now through June 8, 2013 Guerin s Nursery will have their Saturday Fests. From 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM different local restaurants will be offering some of their menu choices offered at their restaurants for sale at the nursery. Many will also have drinks and offer discount coupons redeemable in their restaurants. Some Saturdays will also offer live entertainment and different guest speakers that will offer a program on various gardening and landscaping venues. There will be special sales each Saturday and Sunday too. So check this month s calendar below and come on out and enjoy the fun. APRIL 6 th D Vine Wine and Joe s Italian Restaurant (Different Italian Subs) 13 th Little Bear BBQ 20 th Barking Rock Winery and Agave Tamale Company (Hot Handmade Tamales & you can buy extra to take home. The ones you take home will be frozen). 27 th Pearl Street Station (Rib Boats & Dublin Bottling Works soft drinks) RECREATION COMMITTEE Our pancake breakfast will be on April 13 th and we will start serving breakfast at 8:00 am. We can use any cash donations for the pancake fixin's, i.e. fruit (strawberries and blueberries), bacon, and syrup, or anything else you would like to have. We would like to have all the donations in by April 11th, so we can get all the food together Friday evening. Don't forget the next week on April 20 th we will be making box lunches for clean-up day. We could use any donations for the food as well. All proceeds for these lunches will be put into a fund for our Flat Screen TV for the clubhouse. On Wednesday, March 27th at 7:00 pm in the clubhouse we will have a meeting for everyone interested in helping with the Pancake Breakfast and the Box lunch event. We also plan on putting together some other parties for the Spring and Summer months. We encourage everyone to come and help put together some great ideas for community events. Mark your calendars for May 3rd at 7:00 pm we will be bringing back one of our more popular events! Desert night! All you need to do is show up with your favorite desert. Bring a few $ for our surprise event!

ARC COMMITTEE An application has to be approved by the Architectural Review Committee before any improvements or changes are made to any lot. Applications and instructions can be found on lgrvr.com or in a folder on the bulletin board in the clubhouse. Any ARC member can answer your questions.
