The Build Hawaii Awards program is open to all GCA general contractors and specialty contractors for projects completed in The program is designed after the Associated General Contractors of America Build America Awards. The Build Hawaii Awards has always showcased the best of construction in Hawaii and each year the best of the best construction projects compete for this prestigious award. Based on the submissions received, a panel of judges has reviewed each entry and determined a score for how each of the projects met the eight outlined criteria. All the judge s scores have been tabulated to determine a winner in each of the categories. ACK had to juggle vertical construction of the buildings while sitework was still in progress. RENOVATION / REMODELING dck pacific construction, LLC INDUSTRIAL Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Renovation After suffering extensive damage from the October, 2006 earthquake, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel undertook major repair and renovation work including gutting and renovating all 156 rooms in the main tower. After significant value engineering, Hawaiian Dredging began specialized demolition to expose areas for extensive epoxy injection in the concrete structure. Additional scope of work included rock wall reconstruction, modernization of the restaurant, a new fitness center, and upgrading 102 rooms in the beach wing. The Queen s Medical Center Electrical Upgrade Plant The new four story reinforced concrete plant houses four new 2.5 megawatt generators. The new plant gives the Queen s Medical Center the capability to operate on generator power in the event of any disaster situation. Located on a site between the existing hospital utility plant and a 9 story parking structure, the site dimensions measured 92 feet by 20.6-feet. Nan, Inc. MUNICIPAL and UTILITIES CONSTRUCTION Kiewit Pacific Co. HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION $1 to $10 Million Hawaii County Building Renovation Phase II The Hawaii County Building served as the heart of Hilo for nearly 50 years. It was an icon of Hilo architecture and over the years the building became in need of a renovation. Understanding the importance of resurrecting this symbolic structure, Nan, Inc. completed the highly anticipated renovation incorporating 21st century features, while maintaining the original fabric of the building. Kapule Highway Resurfacing, Kauai The Kapule Highway resurfacing project was a $7.1 million dollar project to reconstruct a one mile stretch of Kapule Highway. Kiewit implement a comprehensive Traffic Management Plan and kept two lanes open during construction. The project was finished ahead of schedule and with a flawless safety record. Over 263 days and 11,000 man hours without a single recordable incident.

Scope of work also included new drainage features, traffic signal installation, bridges, and utility relocations. The Ultra-Thin White (UTW) topping overlay product was used for a longer life span, and was the largest UTW installation in the United States at the time. Hale Koa Ilima Tower Renovations The Hale Koa Ilima Tower Renovation Contract included partial demolition of guestrooms and functional spaces, modification to partition layouts, construction of a new service bar at the Banyan Tree Showroom, renovation of the Hotel s main kitchen, upgrading mechanical systems, upgrading electrical systems and installation of new architectural finishes. ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRUCTION Repair Wharf S-19 This renovated wharf facility provides a critical tugboat berthing and service platform. Work included structural concrete repairs and replacement of existing fender system using concrete and composite piles. Healy partnered with the Navy to ensure the facility was fully operational five months ahead of schedule. Healy s professionalism and cooperative efforts resulted in an outstanding performance evaluation from the Navy. Central Maui Landfill, Phase V-A Disposal Cell & Related Improvements Cell V-A included 87,540 cubic yards of excavation and 67,500 cubic yards of embankment, a 2-foot layer of low permeability clay, an impermeable geo membrane, a geotextile, a 1 foot of drain rock (leachate), and an additional 2 feet of soil cover, a 1,110-foot long, 30-foot high trash containment fence.
