2 Electricity y 50th Anniversary Snowy Mountains Scheme 50th Anniversary Snowy Mountains Scheme 50th Anniversary Snowy Mountains Scheme from water w This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, a plan to harness power from the Snowy River to provide both irrigation and electricity. The Snowy Mountains Scheme is one of Australia s greatest engineering projects. It is made up of seven power stations, a pumping station, 16 major dams, 1 kilometres of mountain tunnels and 80 kilometres of aqueducts which collect and divert water. Work on the Scheme was difficult and dangerous, and 121 men were killed during the 25 years it took to complete, from 1949 to Men from more than 30 countries worked on the Scheme, which is considered to be the birthplace of multiculturalism in Australia. The stamps feature workers constructing various parts of the Scheme, with the Snowy Mountains shown across the top of each design. Issue date: 12 August 50th Anniversary Snowy Mountains Scheme These stamps feature coastal wildlife from Fraser Island, the world s largest sand island, and one of Australia s outstanding World Heritage sites. The Humpback Whales shown on the 70c stamp are famous for their singing and aerobatics. Between August and October each year they travel to the warm waters of Fraser Island to give birth to their calves before returning to the Antarctic. The two 90c stamps show the coast of Fraser Island along with a Brahminy Kite in flight. 70c Humpback Whales 90c Loggerhead Turtles on the $1.05 stamp make their nests on Fraser Island. The $1.20 stamp features the White-bellied Sea-Eagle which is often seen along the coastline of Fraser Island. Each stamp shows one of the beautiful shells which can be found on the coast of Fraser Island. This stamp issue features the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games emblem with two of Australia s best-known landmarks, the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Issue date: 14 September TM SOCOG Fraser Island is named after Eliza Frazer, who lived on the island for a while after being shipwrecked there in 1836.

3 Christmas on c 40 Does Father Christmas live at the North Pole? These stamps suggest that he might actually live on with red crabs as his helpers! The 40c stamp shows him snoozing in a hammock while the crabs shine his boots and fan him with a palm leaf. The stamp sees him sharing his Christmas dinner with Abbott s Boobies, Christmas Frigatebirds, a Red Crab and a Skink. On the 95c stamp, Father Christmas s sleigh is pulled by a pair of Abbott s Boobies. Christmas still seems far away, but these stamps are issued in September so they can be used for items sent overseas by surface mail. Students from illustrated how their favourite festivals are celebrated on the island. These are the prize-winning designs. island christmas 85c Tan Diana age 8 Favourite HUNGRY GHOST FESTIVAL (85C) DIANA TAN, AGE 8 People provide offerings of food, toy money and paper clothes to make peace with the ghosts of strangers during the Hungry Ghost Festival. The ceremony finishes when the priest tosses buns and lollies to the hungry ghosts. Favourite HARI RAYA HAJI ($1.20) ANWAR RAMLAN, AGE 10 Hari Raya Haji marks the end of the annual pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca. During this festival, Muslims invite their friends and relatives to their homes to enjoy a traditional feast.. $1 o Anwar Ramlan age 10 ARTS FESTIVAL DRAGON (dragon) JASON FONG, AGE 10 The Community Arts Festival is part of a weeklong festival to celebrate s formation as an Australian territory. The week includes a street parade, arts workshops, a sports day, raft races, feasting and fun. EASTER (crab) SITI ZANARIAH ZAINAL, AGE 11 This stamp shows one of the red crabs for which is famous. The first day cover shows Territory Day by Tang Huoy Wei, age 12. I think the cartoon on the back of issue no.56 was very funny with Zucchinis in Bikinis. You ve probably guessed that it has something to do with my nose! No, not the SIZE of my nose! My name is Erik and I am turning nine this year on the 5th of June. I collect stamps sometimes. My Grandmother and Auntie normally send me stamps on my birthday. This year I am moving to a different country but I m not sure where. I play the clarinet and can play the Dutch, German and Thai national anthems and The Cup of Life. I am trying to play the Australian national anthem. From Erik I like your clarinet, Eric. With all those anthems, you could open the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games!
