Bring a Friend Program I would like to tell you about a brand new program the board has authorized to help spur interest and membership into the club. It's called Bring-a-Friend. Just bring a friend to any general meeting and their first drink is on the club... hey, not bad... The meetings are short but packed with info plus there is a lot of socializing too. The food is inexpensive so have dinner. BUT wait, there's more...the president is motivated & will add to that, he will also buy a drink for the member who brings a friend. December General Meeting: The board has voted to cancel the December 21st General Membership meeting. December is time for other things, so Good Tidings and Joy to all. 5 Talk. by Jim Shaw, Director What s New..The snow is falling and almost all our destination ski resorts are enjoying a tremendous amount of early snow. Whistler opened on November 5th to record numbers of skiers. Summit County and Vail received over two feet of snow this week ensuring a Thanksgiving opening for the front range Colorado resorts. The Wasatch Range east of Salt City also got some of the white stuff. We expect Telluride, Brianhead, and the Tahoe area to receive some significant snowfall as the jet stream moves south with the onset of winter. If you have not yet signed up for your selected distant trips, you need to do so now. As of November 15th, 72% of our available ski spots have been taken, with most of the remaining space being on the Brianhead trip and on Mammoth. All other trips are either full or very close to full. I spoke with Gary George and he might be able to expand his space to accommodate some additional skiers on the Salt, but this trip is at capacity now. Cyndy Bills has the same situation on her Tahoe trip. Telluride, Summit County/Vail, and Whistler are very close to capacity. By the time you read this column in December, most of our trip captains will need to expand their trip counts to accommodate you. Thus, you may encounter a waitlist situation if you haven t taken action and signed up yet. Remember, a nominal deposit will hold your space and remember that you can deduct 3% off your final payment if you choose to make all your payments with cash or check. Non- Distant s..although most of our members are thinking ski season, we are already 25% full on the Powell Houseboat trip for Labor Day, We have six people signed up and deposited and can only take 24 due to the maximum boat capacities. If you are thinking about going to Powell, I would suggest sending in a nominal $50 deposit to the ski club PO Box to ensure you will be able to go, or at least give Dave or myself a call to express your interest. This one will fill early and cannot be expanded..the arrangements are coming together nicely for the Truckee River Rafting, Napa Wine Tour, and the Canyon De Chelley/Monument Valley/Grand Canyon Excursion. Because of increased fuel costs, airfares and charter buses are coming in a bit higher than forecasted for these trips, which may slightly increase targeted pricing. We are working hard at negotiating with our vendors to keep these trip costs in line for the membership. As an example, decent hotel space in Napa is running about $169 to $209 per night. Through good negotiation, we were able to secure space at the River Terrace Inn for just over $100 per night. Upcoming Possibilities..I have been approached by a couple of members that have expressed interest in leading a couple of very different international trips. It seems we have some scuba divers within our membership and a Fall, 2006 trip to the Netherlands Antilles, just off the coast of Venezuela, is under consideration. These are the Dutch Islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao. This trip will also be geared toward nondivers, or those that want to learn to dive. The islands are below the hurricane belt and have excellent weather year round. Curacao also has some of the best duty free shopping in the Caribbean. Also under consideration for Fall, 2006 is a trip to Costa Rica. This has become a hot (no pun intended) destination in recent months and has a very stable, pro-american government with a highly educated, English-speaking population. In addition, the country boasts excellent diving, eco-tourism, and shopping. If anyone has any feedback regarding these two potential additions to our trip schedule, please me at jl.shaw@att.net.
