Reducing Road Trauma RoadSafe Gippsland Community Road Safety Council Annual Report
Number of Fatalities and Serious Injuries RoadSafe Gippsland Community Road Safety Council Gippsland Road Safety Strategy The Gippsland Road Safety Strategy , was developed to provide a strategic approach to reducing road trauma in Gippsland and the broader Victorian Community. Victoria Police, Department of Justice, TAC and VicRoads provide local enforcement, education and the physical environment that supports regional road safety priorities. These efforts are supported by a multi-action approach to improving road safety at the local level by the development and implementation of community road safety programs and initiatives. This strategy also provides the framework for Regional Management Forum membership to partner and promote road safety through community networks. During the life of this strategy, a target to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries as a result of crashes on our roads by 10% is set in support of the Victorian Road Safety Strategy target. Annual evaluations are undertaken to assess Gippsland s progress in meeting this target and the targets established for regional priorities. 500 Gippsland Fatalities & Serious Injuries Year Gippsland Fatalities & Serious Injuries Average Fatalities & Serious Injuries ( ) Strategy Target
Road Toll: Chairperson s Report Time to look back at where we ve come from, so we can focus on the work to be done to achieve a safer community. When we look at the road statistics for our area for the past 12 months and compare them to the year before it shows there is still work to be done. Our mission is to reduce road trauma. This means that if a crash occurs on our roads we aim for the chance of an injury or death to be reduced. In 2014 the Gippsland region saw just fewer than 349 people seriously injured on our roads. This was up compared to people required hospitalisation for more than 14 days, compared to 43 in Unfortunately there were 29 fatalities recorded on our roads in 2014, which was the same as 2013.
Chairperson s Report Programs: This year RoadSafe Gippsland has delivered; 36 Looking After Our Mates sessions to businesses, schools and sporting clubs. 2 Hypothetical Presentations to year 11 & 12 secondary school students. Bike Ed Challenges continue to be popular with primary school pupils with 6 Municipal challenges and a Regional Final staged. We again ran 2 Child Restraint Fitting Days, showing many carers, parents and grandparents the safest way to transport their young children around in their cars. Our speed observation signs continued to be used on our highways and residential streets as a constant reminder to drivers to be aware of their speed. They have also been used by some of our partners in advising their workers of on-site speeds as well as messages being displayed warning motorists of potential dangers ahead. Our mobile billboards, banner sites and static signs are on constant watch over our major highways. Our partnership with local media outlets continues to strengthen with RoadSafe regularly called upon to make comment on local road safety issues. Our TV and radio commercials continue to get airplay and raise road safety awareness. We ve backed up our profile with electronic media with local newspapers and social media. The future is still bright with plenty of scope for improvement in the education of the road users of our area, which in turn will reduce the trauma on our roads.
Chairperson s Report The Future: Our focus should be on delivering intelligence based programs that meet the needs of our local community and their road safety issues. We need to remember, it s not a case of RoadSafe having to doing everything, but working with local partners to assist them in working towards reducing road trauma. These partnerships, both new and old, must remain our priority. Thanks: In closing, I would like to thank and acknowledge all of our partners and sponsors who have assisted us in the educational work we ve done. These people and organisations are mentioned in our full annual report. Thank you to our executive committee for all the hard work they have contributed behind the scenes. Vice President Grant Phillips, Secretary Jeff Amos & Treasurer -Sandy Kam. Thank you also to our Vic Roads liaison, Alana Reiss, who has again proved to be invaluable in assisting our group with her knowledge and passion. The partnerships we have developed and maintained over the past year are instrumental in helping us to function and operate in the way we do. To the managers and employers, the companies, departments and staff of all the organisations we deal with, thank you for your assistance and for being a part of this group. Finally thank you to my wife Toni for giving me the time and support to put into this extremely worthwhile endeavour.
Chairperson s Report In Closing; Thank you for giving me the opportunity and privilege of being the President of this wonderful organisation and group of like-minded people. RoadSafe Gippsland should be proud of the achievements of the past year. We need to let all and sundry know we are a part of Gippsland and here to serve our community, addressing issues affecting Gippslanders. I wish the incoming committee great success in reducing road trauma in the forthcoming years. Andrew Milbourne RoadSafe Gippsland President

Bike Ed Program The Bike Ed Regional Final was held in October and was a very close competition. As usual the standard was high and a credit to the coaches in the schools on their Bike Education Programs. We also conducted the 6th Annual Special Schools Road Safety Event at the GDF SUEZ Traffic School in Morwell. The day was a great success with good representation from various Gippsland Special Schools from right across Gippsland. Funding for the Bike Ed Challenges was provided by VicRoads and prizes for competitors were generously donated by Wheelheat Cycles from Wonthaggi and Wonthaggi Complete Garden Care proprietor John McCurdy. Without the generosity of our supporters, these important events would not be possible.
Media & Communications Program Radio, television and newspaper advertising and interviews continued to be delivered across Gippsland. Thank you to everyone that assisted with this program.
Motorcycle Program The Motorcycle Safety Trailer has been displayed at a number of events across Gippsland, including the Phillip Island Moto GP and World Superbikes. Thank you to everyone who assisted in transporting and manning this display. If you wish to utilise the display, please contact Alana Riess on (03) to make a booking. The Working Party has continued to work on the Crash Cluster Project with VicRoads and Victoria Police and recently commenced work on trail bikes initiatives. Motorcycle awareness week was completed prior to the MotoGP in October The campaign included high profile news stories, radio advertising, distribution of brochures, use of road side banners, billboards and variable messages signs, as well as the use of the Motorcycle Safety Trailer. Thank you to the members of the Working Party for their dedication and passion for Motorcycle Safety.
Roadside Banner & Billboard Program The roadside banner and billboard program continued to be administered well by SES units and local councils across the region. Stormy weather conditions and vandalism have had an impact on some of our banners and frames. Works have been delivered and will continue into the new financial year to repair and replace as many banners and frames as possible. Thank you to the members and contractors who have made arrangements for all of these repairs to occur. The sponsorship with McDonalds expired at the end of Negotiations for future sponsorship options are underway with the McDonalds marketing department and local licensees.
Young Road Users Program Hypothetical sessions continued to be delivered across Gippsland, with the following schools hosting a session during : St Paul s Anglican Grammar Yarram Secondary College The sessions continue to receive very positive feedback from teachers and students. Thank you to our Hypothetical Facilitators: Andrew Milbourne Dwayne Morrison Brendan Horrocks Kevin McLaren Thank you to the numerous panel members who assisted with the abovementioned sessions.
Young Road Users Program By law all people travelling in a motor vehicle must travel in a restraint that is properly adjusted and fastened. To protect children in a crash, restraints must be: the right size for the child properly adjusted and fastened correctly fitted to the vehicle 2 Child Restraint Checking Days were held in partnership with Autobarn Traralgon and Wellington Shire Council in Sale. Many members of the community took advantage of the free service and the restraint checking staff were kept busy providing advice and adjustments to twisted belts, gated buckles and straps height. Thank you to Chris Clark and Sheryl McHugh for their work for organising these days.
