Introduction Quarter 4 (January March 2014) has been a very successful quarter, some key highlights include: Cinema / film events Partnership working New bookings including roller skating Centre improvements New bouncy castle at Beesley Green Children s parties A sports star visit to The Rainbow Rooms New youth club at Westwood Park Garden improvements at Guild Hall in partnership with Salford Foundation Kurling matches Successful gardening course held at The Valley Community meetings and gatherings.

Beesley Green Community Centre It has been a successful quarter for Beesley with new bookings including a mum s yoga and baby play session and a dementia café. There have also been several one off events including a swish clothes swapping afternoon and roller skating! The centre has had an upgrade to the heating system, with a new state of the art controller. It monitors and maintains temperatures and will save money overall with its smart technology. On 25 th January the kurling club provided a meal after their regular weekly session for the Salford Bowel Cancer support group. Macmillan held a charity support group for people and their families that have had an organ transplant; it is hoped they will hold more at the centre. The new Saturday morning Zumba class is doing well and continues to attract more people to the session. Kerris from the American Line dancing group held a swish party in February where people came with items of clothes and swapped for someone else s clothes saving money and gaining a new wardrobe. A youth roller skating group came in during March, as they could no longer use Walkden High School. The one off booking went well and it is hoped they may stay on as a regular group. The centre submitted a bid to the APS grant for a bouncy castle and was successful! As a result a bouncy castle has been custom made for the hall at the centre. Party and event packages have been put into place and staff are in the process of being trained. The new addition should entice new customers, provide more options to customers and generate income. Worsley Intimate Theatre Company had sell out performances of their production of Educating Rita at Worsley Court House. The group use Beesley to rehearse regularly with their next production being Yes Minister. Attendances at Beesley have increased by 18% during this quarter due to new bookings and party bookings at weekends, it is hoped this will continue to increase with the introduction of the new bouncy castle. Boothstown Community Centre There have been several events this month including a christening, a friendship afternoon tea and 3 children s birthday parties. There have also been 4 new bookings including Mini Morning Movers and Little Bookworms, also in January the Youth Forum started up again after several months. Boothstown Kurling group won the community league for a second time. The group is very successful and has currently got a waiting list for new members. Tiny Tots numbers are slowly increasing with new members every week. Luncheon Club on a Wednesday has lost a few older members during the past year but now have several new volunteers in the kitchen that are looking towards the future with new ideas. Close Knit friends have received a thank you letter from St Mary s Hospital following their donation of knitted garments for their premature babies. The Saturday church group are continuing to attend the centre every Saturday afternoon.

In February a meeting was held in the community room by First Bus representatives for the public to drop in and give their views and receive information on the services in the area; the attendance was good with 48 people in total plus local councillors. The 2 Saturday morning exercise classes that are being run with Fit City Worsley are beginning to get popular and increase in attendances. City West Housing Trust held a meeting in the centre for local residents and councillors to air their views on the forthcoming plans they have with local green spaces. Volunteers from the Monday Café 55 group held a befriending afternoon on 7 th March. Tickets were sold and a light lunch, tea and coffee were served followed by entertainment from a guest singer, speakers and a raffle. Sainsbury s also donated cakes as part of the refreshments. Over 50 people enjoyed the afternoon, taking home a free bag of goodies from the Helping Hands charity. The event was followed up with training for the volunteers that will be befriending the elderly in the area. Several film shows are planned for the next quarter starting on 11 th April in partnership with the Health Team. The events will begin with cards, games and dominos followed by light lunch and a film. Also starting in April is a healthy cooking course and exercise group. Then in May Spanish lessons commence and red pepper exercise for children. Although the centre continues to be popular attendances have decreased slightly by 1% this quarter, this could be due to some of the luncheon groups losing their older members and Jive Bunnies who cancelled their Tuesday morning sessions. Clifton Community Centre All groups returned from the Christmas break with positive attendances. Slimming World started back the first week in January. The session was very busy with lots of new members hoping to feel fit and healthy in the new year. The Lets All Join Hands group held two sessions, these were well attended and everybody enjoyed the disco and cakes. The Clifton Group is doing well; they have improved attendances especially at the Friday afternoon sessions. They have also started kurling, dominos and connect four. During January and February the Clifton Art Group had a tutor for 6 weeks, they also had another session of calligraphy which is always enjoyed by everyone. The Thursday morning Little Rascals mother and toddler group has attracted several new mums and grandparents. They recently received a grant to help pay rent for the coming year. The Christian Worship Group had a wedding lesson during one of their services in February, which was followed by a curry and chilli. Children from the Red Tiger Karate group in Irlam used the centre again during the February half term holidays. Attendances at the centre have increased by 11% in comparison to the same quarter last year due to the groups attracting more members. A very busy and friendly centre

Guild Hall Community Centre The centre continues to be very popular receiving new enquiries and bookings such as red pepper and Active Lifestyles classes. The centre has also worked in partnership with Salford Foundation to make improvements to the gardens. Playgroup started back in January with a slight increase in children attending. The group has had a number of positive enquiries; hopefully this will attract more children to the positive scheme. Circuit for all returned after the Christmas break, the number of attendances is increasing from the end of and looks to continue into the next quarter. The red pepper booking has proved very successful and have asked if the booking can be extended for a further 5 weeks. Unfortunately due to the small meeting room having another booking, staff were unable to accommodate this. However it was possible to split the main hall into two rooms and they have now booked the main hall. garden is not in use by the centre. On completion of their hard work the group held a small open day, they made cakes and provided refreshments for all who attended. The centre has also had a birthday party with entertainment provided by Mr Yappadidoo who sang and made animal character balloons enjoyed by everyone. Playgroup celebrated St Patrick s Day on Monday 17 th March with all staff and children wearing green. They made biscuits iced in green painted shamrocks. Attendances continue to increase at Guild Hall due to new bookings, partnership work with Salford Foundation and the success of the groups. Lots of different activities to choose from The Active Lifestyles Team booked the small meeting room for one to one meetings with patients. CSM Training booked the small meeting room for a week long course in February for job seekers wanting to complete a FLT course. Due to this being in demand and very successful a second course was then arranged for March 2014, which was once again very popular. SCL Dance booked some additional classes during February due to the increased popularity. The Salford Foundation Project Youth Team gave the side garden a make over. This is to help encourage younger children visiting the centre to tend the plants and feed the birds. This can also be enjoyed by the neighbours when the

Rainbow Rooms Community Centre The centre has attracted new bookings and held a successful holiday programme once again this quarter, there has also been a visit from an Australian sports star! A new keep fit class started on Monday evenings. In February the dance classes held their annual presentation night; it was a great night and very well attended. The rainbow holiday club took place again during February half term with the children taking part in multi-sports at St Patrick s High School. The Broughton Trust has booked the centre for their look good, feel good and cake decorating courses, which are running Mondays and Thursdays for 10 weeks. Cascade booked the centre twice in March for open days to help women with families get back in to work; they have been very well attended. Melissa March dropped into the centre to take part in a Zumba class on her visit to the UK from Perth Western Australia. Melissa has just retired from playing professional Basketball for Perth Waves, where she led the team as captain. Melissa is from a well known sporting family back in her home country. Her dad is Geoff March who played and vicecaptained Australia in cricket and her two brothers Mitchell and Shaun also play cricket for Australia. Melissa had never taken part in a Zumba class before and said it was a great way to work out. The children s dance classes held a St Patricks Day party; they all got dressed up in the Irish colours and got into the spirit of the night with Irish dancing. The centre had all the lights replaced this January with new efficiency saving bulbs. The 360 health and safety inspection also took place this quarter. Over the last few years the centre has supported the Rwanda Aid project, the founder of this project is David Chaplin. David has been working hard with volunteers out in Rwanda helping to build schools and teach the village to look after them selves. All his hard work has paid off as he was given an O.B.E at Buckingham Palace this March. The Here and Now Mona Street Project held a 70s Night at the end of March. It was an amazing night with the local community joining in with the young adults that are in recovery, the dance floor was never empty from the beginning to the end of the night. They are planning to hold an 80 s night at the end of May. Attendances at Rainbow are down in comparison to the same quarter last year, this is due to there being more events in 2013, also Easter fell during this quarter last year therefore there would have been more attendances for the holiday clubs.

Healthy Communities Collaboration held an Orientation Event in order to establish a line of communication to the local public regards cancer awareness. The dance group everybody dance is running to capacity. It s always very well attended and enthusiasm levels are very high. The Valley Community Centre Get Set Youth Club purchased a ceiling projector, sound bar, film license and Playstation 4, which are to be installed within the centre soon. These items will upgrade the level of interest in the group and also the level of quality service offered to the young people of the area. Kurling club s social event was well attended with a special guest; a lady of 101 years old. Healthy food was served, much conversing and merriment was had by all. A few games of Bingo rounded the day off. The garden group started the new year with a few meetings in order to plan for the upcoming growing season. The level of interest is growing with regards to the community gardens, with many people on the waiting list to get plots on the site. Although the project is open to anyone to join and help out. The community centre was awarded its 5 food hygiene rating, which is very important as the centre provides food for their film show club. The film show club are planning on being better than ever this year too. There is a small charge to cover the food and coffee of 2.50, new faces are welcome. The films shown are mainly oldies, sing-a-longs and comedies. The group welcomes film choices from anyone; the best so far being Hobson Choice. Make and bake sessions are really well organised, they provide a choice of craft activities and baking. This is a session aimed at people with disabilities and is always accepting new admissions. Slimming World have provided a massive influx of new people into the centre by putting on two sessions a week, as the group was very well established before coming to the centre. The group has provided over 150 new people a week walking through the doors, which is a fantastic booking. Everyone comments on how well the place runs and what a great atmosphere the place has; it has been quite overwhelming. Green shoots training course started during the month of March, run by Salford College with a tutor from Groundworks. The course is primarily aimed at people who are out of work or people on part time hours but is also available to everyone, subject to availability. The course is designed around the pupils needs and is run in the community gardens adjacent to the community centre. The group also have use of the centre for a short while to cover refreshment breaks. The rainbow group have their weekly meeting at The Valley Community Centre now. This group is a pre-brownies girls group; take part in activities, games and singing during term time. The Kurling group suffered the sad passing of Mildred, she played kurling as often as she could despite being blind.

Mildred had a great history of helping out at The Valley over the last few decades and will be missed by many. Wardley Community Centre There have been several children s parties taking place at the centre during the last quarter. A coffee morning run by the Health Improvement Team for people who have previously used their courses started in January and runs every Thursday morning from 11am-12.30pm, It gives their clients a chance to catch up with each other and have a chat. Playgroup are still struggling with low numbers but are hopeful these will pick up in the near future. Cheerleading is a popular group with good numbers. They recently came second in a competition and will now be representing the United Kingdom in the European competition in June. The parent and toddler group is very busy with lots of young mums enjoying the mornings. Kurling is as popular as ever although they have been beaten a few times in their league matches. Art club have had a tutor in for the last few weeks and exhibited their works at Start Pendleton Gallery. The drama class is very busy and have just performed the musical Grease for their parents and friends. Swinton women s group have increased their time from one to two hours as new members are welcomed. They have a different topic each week and have regular guest speakers attending. In February a weight management group started at the centre every two weeks on a Monday evening from 6pm-8pm. This is in conjunction with the NHS and is set to run for twelve weeks. Also in the February school holidays an open access morning for children was organised. This was run on different days in several community centres. Wardley concert band are to host a charity concert at the centre in June. Attendances at Wardley continue to increase. In comparison to the same quarter last year attendances increased by 20%, this is due to a number of successful courses, successful events and new bookings. Westwood Park Community Centre Kurling have re-booked the centre as an ongoing booking. On average they are getting around 10 players per week. The session is open to adults of all abilities, which is the main reason that this booking has been a success. Henshaws have re-booked fortnightly at the centre, which is great news as it had been looking like they might have to cancel altogether due to transport issues. Members of the group now arrange their own transport and are not reliant on Ring & Ride. The Brownies group decided to sell cakes during their sessions to help raise money. This scheme was called the cheeky monkey fundraiser with the group managing to raise 25. Thanks to a successful APS bid the centre has recently started a new youth club. It

runs every Wednesday from 4pm to 5pm, entry is 1.00 and children can enjoy a wide range of activities including table tennis, board games, mini pool, arts & crafts, playstation 4 games, dance mats and its very own tuck shop. Numbers have increased each week. The centre has recently worked with the Helping Hands Project in obtaining warm bags, which have winter essentials to keep the elderly warm during the colder months. Attendances at Westwood have decreased by 13% in comparison to the same quarter last year, this is unfortunately due to losing some regular bookings, however with the establishment of the new youth club it is hoped they will increase next quarter.

Inclusive Activities Salford Community Leisure s services and activities are influenced by the demographic profile of local communities. SCL strive to provide inclusive services and activities to enable everyone to be active in their chosen leisure pursuit.
