THOMAS FRANCO RAJENDRA DEV) GENERAL SECRETARY Text of AISBOF Circular No.132 dated SBIOA (CHENNAI CIRCLE) SILVER JUBILEE CONFERENCE AT CODISSIA, COIMBATORE SBIOA Chennai Circle held it s Silver Jubilee Conference in their Golden Jubilee Year at CODISSIA, Coimbatore on 16 th Nov The reverberating beats and clinging sounds of the drums and cymbals of "Sendai Melam", provided a rhythmic foil to the festive atmosphere. The Conference hall had many stalls with products of organic food, handicrafts produced by SHGs, hosiery materials by Small and Medium Enterprises which presented a festive atmosphere to the conference. Around 2000 members gathered at the venue ranting slogans SBIOA(CC) Zindabad and AISBOF Zindabad. 2. The septuagenarian former General Secretary of Chennai Circle, Comrade E.A.G. Moses hoisted the flag in the midst of jubilant members and leaders of various affiliates. Com.Y.Sudarshan, General Secretary, AISBOF, Com.Samir Kr.

Srikanta Deka Presidents of Karnataka Circle, Kerala Circle, Mumbai Circle, Hyderabad Circle Delhi Circle, N.E. Circle respectively honoured the Conference with their august presence. 3. Com.M.Dharmarajan, former General Secretary of Chennai Circle inaugurated an Exhibition of rare photos, circulars and documents of yester years, providing glimpses of the glorious past of the Circle. A documentary produced by Com. M. Shanmugam, DGS of the Circle with the title "The long years of Struggles" was released by Com. K. Parthasarathy, former General Secretary and was shown in the backdrop which attempted to record the history of the Association. Former president Com.S.Saravanamuthu released a bouquet of books with varied topics such as "You Should Know" on day to day banking, "Public Sector; the Pride of our Nation", "Random thoughts for Stress free Life", "Let us lead a Healthy Life with Nature", and the revived "Officers' Forum". 4. The symphony of various cultural forms of dances, choreographed and performed by the students of the SBOA School run by the Circle Association's Educational Trust provided a traditional welcome to the guests. Com.G.Selvaraj, Regional Secretary of the Coimbatore Module and Chairman, Reception Committee welcomed the guests. 5. Com.A.Krishnan, President of SBIOA(CC) in his presidential address elaborately spoke on the policies adopted by the Bank and the Central Government from time to time and how the most enlightened managerial class trade union of reputation handled the issues. The present leadership is keeping intact the glory of the association and urged the youngsters to take up the responsibility in the trade union movement in large scale. 6. Com.Thomas Franco Rajendra Dev, General Secretary in his introductory speech saluted the founders and highlighted the importance and significance of

3 Silver Jubilee Conference which is conducted in the Golden Jubilee year of its formation. He vividly narrated the illustrious journey of the mighty organization. He touched upon the Circle Association s successful handling of various court cases. The Contributions by various General Secretaries to the development of this great organisation was promptly brought to the attention of the members in style and oratorial skill. He also stated that the Federation and Association have gone an extra mile when the Bank faced crisis. If the Management treats the Federation and Association as partner in progress, the Bank can come out of the present day problems he added. 7. Shri.P.S.Praksh Rao, CGM Chennai Circle in his inaugural address lauded the circle association for completing 50 glorious years and the many laurels achieved during the period. He said that formation of a trade union for officers is an unique achievement during that period. He acknowledged that the conference is an example of "Event Management at it's best". He explained in detail how the entry of private banks made the PSBs to transform and perform better thus providing an excellent working atmosphere as well as increased benefits for the staff. He lauded the relationship maintained by the management and association in the circle. He listed the various challenges faced by the bank as well as the hardships encountered by the staff due to the acute shortage of staff. He exhorted his colleagues to extend the talent exhibited by them in their respective roles in the bank to achieve the goals of the bank and to make Chennai Circle No.1 in many parameters. 8. Shri.S.Gurumurthy, Corporate Advisor & Commentator on Economic & Political Affairs stole the show and won the hearts of the members with his prolific speech filled with data on the scenario of financial institutions in comparison with the global banks and private banks; the role played by the PSBs in the economic development of our Nation and the policies of the various committees appointed by the RBI/Government of India which threatens PSBs. He appreciated the stupendous performance of the Public Sector Undertakings in the Country for the welfare of people especially for the benefit of poor, downtrodden and underprivileged people. He emphasised that competitions are inevitable but the support of the Government should always be for the

4 development of PSUs because these were established with the intention to help the lower/middle class people and creation of more employment for the under privileged class. With the support of the Government, PSUs contribute for substantial increase in our National Income and earn the respect and credibility at global level. He praised the Indian family system especially the Indian women for the savings culture which saved the country by insulating it from the economic tsunami the world faced in He also demolished the much hyped up foreign investment theory and it's benefits to the Indian economy. He put forth, facts and figures and explained how it did not help the economy despite the numerous concessions showered on them. He called the intelligent people to debate and become intellectuals so that they can spread the achievements and contribution of the Public Sector. It has become necessary to spread awareness among the public about the important role played by the Public Sector in shaping up the Indian Economy and protecting it from the international system, he stated. 9. Com.Y.Sudarshan, General Secretary, AISBOF & President AIBOC, in his key note address recalled his earlier visits to Coimbatore and his close association with Chennai as he was born in Chennai. He congratulated SBIOA(CC) who successfully faced the Management s onslaughts. He enlightened the audience about the sacrifices and struggles of the leaders of yester years to clinch many improvements in service conditions and various benefits for the Officers. He had also briefed the challenges ahead and cautioned that the path is not smooth. Speaking on the issues to be tackled during the bipartite settlement, clinching of five days a week, regulated working hours for officers and parity of pay and pension with Central Government employees is going to be challenges lying ahead, he said. He also cautioned against the counter demands put forth by the IBA viz. variable pay, Group Medical Insurance. He also requested the members to persuade the non participants to see reason and make them participate in the ensuing agitation programme. 10. Com.C.M. Bhaskaran, General Secretary, SBSU, Com.Samir Kr. Mukherjee, Sr. Vice President, AISBOF, Director SBI and General Secretary NE Circle; Com.M.Sreenath, Com.Sambit Mishra, Com.Ramkumar Sabapathy, Com.

5 Shankar N.Naik, Com.G.Subramanyam and Com.Ravinder Gupta General Secretaries of Kerala, Bhubaneswar, Mumbai, Karnataka, Hyderabad and Delhi Circle respectively, Com.Soumya Datta President of Bengal Circle and Com.J.C.Modi, President of SBIOA Ahmedabad Circle offered their felicitations on the eve of the conference. 11. The Social service wing of the Association donated a LED LG Colour TV and Sony DVD Player to KRISH, Coimbatore, an orphanage home taking care of mentally retarded children. 12. As part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations a Seminar titled Public Sector The Temple of India was organised on 15 th evening. Com.T.K. Rangarajan, MP, Rajya Sabha, Dr. Victor Louis Anthuwan, LIBA and Com. Thomas Franco participated in the seminar speaking on different aspects of Public Sector. The Association also inaugurated a year long project under Swatch Bharat Campaign adopting ward 77 of Coimbatore Corporation which covers a grave yard too. An initial amount of Rs. 10 lakhs has been earmarked for the same. As part of the Social service wing certificates were given to our officers who have volunteered to Donate Organ and Blood. 13. Later in the afternoon a very meaningful and proactive business session was conducted in which the delegates participated whole heartedly giving suggestions and airing their views on various issues concerning the Bank as well as the trade union movement. 14. The Conference was very well attended by large gathering, meticulously organized and implemented to perfection. The enthusiasm and the energy of the members was worth watching. The President, Com.A.Krishnan the General Secretary Com.D.T.Franco Rajender Dev and the entire team of volunteers deserves appreciation, we place on record our thanks and good wishes to newly elected team and wish them all the best in further strengthening the Federation and the Movement.
